Author Salman Rushdie Attacked, Stabbed in the Neck Before Lecture in New York

There’s been a bounty on Rushdie in Iran since 1988.

I’ll update this post as more information comes out.

***UPDATE 7:08 PM: It looks like Rushdie is not doing well

Someone attacked author Salman Rushdie on stage before he was set to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution:

Salman Rushdie, the author whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.

An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The 75-year-old author was pushed or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.

Rushdie was quickly surrounded by a small group of people who held up his legs, presumably to send more blood to his chest.

Rushdie has been an enemy of Iran since 1988:

Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous. A year later, Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.

Iran has also offered over $3 million in reward for anyone who kills Rushdie.

“Just witnessed the horrific assassination attempt on #SalmanRushdie’s life. He was stabbed multiple times before attacker was subdued by security,” author Carl Levan tweeted shortly after the stabbing. “Some intrepid members of audience went on stage. What courage will be expected of us next to defend even the smallest freedoms?”

Iran’s government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini’s decree, but anti-Rushdie sentiment lingered. In 2012, a semi-official Iranian religious foundation raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million.

Rushdie dismissed that threat at the time, saying there was “no evidence” of people being interested in the reward.

Are we sure it wasn’t Fauci attempting to administer a booster shot?

JackinSilverSpring | August 12, 2022 at 12:26 pm

I am sure that whoever stabbed Rushdie will be set free on his own recognizance until the trial date. That of course assumes there will be a trial. The prosecutor could always plea it down to a misdemeanor.

Stabbing in the neck is a quintessential Muzzie thing.

Muslims are not compatable with western culture, they will eventually become a much bigger problem. As a matter of policy they should be banned from settling here. Islam is innately subversive.

Even if this was by a Shiite fanatic how the hell does that translate to all Shiites let alone all Muslims?

By the way we have no dam idea about motives, people are being attacked in NY around the clock, it was inevitable that it would eventually be a famous person.

        Motives? Don’t gaslight me, Danny.
This didn’t happen on the street. It happened on the friggin’ stage.

This bigoted attack on Muslims brought to you by a man who even as George W Bush backs war on terror 2.0 (against us you idiot) can’t let go of Bush’ crusade.

Good thing that Rushdie or his entourage were forbidden to have guns by the state of New York. Someone innocent might have gotten hurt.

Is there any change of dropping one nuke on Iran to send them a clearer message?

If Joe Biden wants to go down in history as the first president to be impeached and convicted with not a single vote against impeachment in congress or for acquittal in the senate yes.

Unprovoked mass murder has always been considered wrong, and today we consider massacres with provocation wrong.

By the way what the devil are you doing in a pro-life party? We are a pro-life party that sees life as sacred; and believes we are all made in the image of god. If you want to stop dropping nukes what the devil are you doing in this party?

Dam auto correct, chance.

Religion of peace.. once again

Another assassination attempt. Second in 2 weeks.

Did Rushdie make a remark about Jada’s lack of hair? Doesn’t Will Smith have anything better to do than attack other celebrities?

Same guy stabbed Jussie Smollet in the neck earlier that day. Fortunately, he dodged, so it looks a lot like a razor nick.

“Iran’s government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini’s decree”

Yeah, no. It hasn’t distanced itself from the 1989 Fatwa against Rushdie. In fact, an Iranian official reconfirmed that the fatwa remained valid in the 2010 – 2012 timeframe. About the same time as that “semi-official” Iranian religious foundation (really? A semi-official religious foundation in Iran?) raised the bounty.

The “distancing” is claimed by Western governments who (as Lenin put it) would sell rope to their own hangman. Western government officials desperately want to do business in Iran. So Iran let’s them think what they want.

We’re told things by Western leaders about the nature of Islam based upon wishful thinking all the time. They are constitutionally incapable of telling the truth about that religion. Funny how when it turned out that it was actually a Sunni Muslim who was killing Shia Muslim men (allegedly because his daughter married a Shia man) the authorities deemed it a “interpersonal dispute.”

Really? Interpersonal? Sunnis have been killing Shias ever since The Battle of the Camel in 656. Sunnis don’t consider Shias Muslim at all (and vice versa), so as far as the father is concerned his daughter married a non-Muslim.

Per Sharia law Muslim men can marry non-Muslims as long as they’re Christians or Jews (but numerous fatwas from authorities such as Al Azhar University demand these men hate their wives in their hearts unless and until they become Muslims; there’s a recipe for a happy marriage). But Muslim women must marry Muslim men.

Interpersonal. Yeah, right.

Nothing the cowards in the Western political establishment as well as the MFM tell us about Islam is true. They are afraid of so much about Islam on so many different levels; this is the world’s largest case of Stockholm Syndrome. The hostages taking the side of their hostage takers.

But then they have the same general fear of the truth that Dracula has of the crucifix.

You have to be deaf and blind to assume it was an assassination and not a thug instead of awaiting a real investigation.

Could have been an assassin, could just as easily be part of the hundredfold increase in crime in NY NY.

Just look at the attacks on orthodox Jews; if any of those look like Iranians point it out they look like home grown NYers to me (especially when you remember Iranians are actually white, Iranian literally translates to “Aryan”).

Not saying this isn’t political but I am saying citation needed.

If this happened in Tokyo or Geneva yes definitely political but it happened in a crime ridden hell hole.

    Danny,

This one is a stretch. When someone has an international hit out on them I think it’s perfectly fine to begin with presuming any attack was related to that and it wasn’t random.

“You have to be deaf and blind to assume it was an assassination and not a thug instead of awaiting a real investigation.”

Jeepers Christmas, Danny. What are you snorting?

“An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced.”

Pretty sure it wasn’t to get his watch, phone, and Social Security check.

The problem is NY isn’t just full of thugs who want a fancy watch, it is also filled with maniacs because like most states NY emptied the mental asylums.

If this had been in a place that values its citizens enough to keep crime low, punish criminals, commit maniacs who are a threat to themselves and others and actually cared about the state of its citizenry yes I would say we know the motive.

But come on it is NY NY.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of the endless horde of maniacs who should be in an asylum who the leftists let out because it is so compassionate to have insane people barking everywhere.

It might have been a Shiite fanatic, could just as easily have been a home grown New Yorker.

Even if it was a Shiite that is no more of an indictment against Muslims than the Mexican Drug Cartels who kidnap young women and girls to make slave prostitutes is an indictment of all Christians.

What we need is a real investigation to see why this happened.

I also didn’t see any part about him yelling Allah Akbar which is what most of the Jihadis do as they go for martyrdom.

No, NOT NY NY. Far southwest corner of the state. At the long-established serious & sincere Chautauqua Institution, on the lovely & peaceful Chautauqua Lake, near the small city of Jamestown N.Y.

And apparently enough jihadi material was found on this dangerous creep’s social media accounts to establish a motive.

You are right, I saw the first news about the mans name and identity and what was found about his beliefs after I posted that but when I see a crime in NY a political motive from the culprit is the last thing I think, and it is also the least likely scenario (although that is what it was in this case).

Danny: There are already reports available documenting the perp’s radical Islamic views.

Back in the day when the fatwa was more prominent, I thought I’d see what it was all about. So I toddled on down to the public library and checked the book out and read it. Fabulous read, entertaining in that weird edgy 90’s way, but after that, I was even more baffled as to why they were so up in arms about it. Well i didn’t know squat about Islam at the time, other than they were a ‘protected minority’ according to everyone but everyone, so it didn’t start sinking in until 9/11. Just another totalitarian, completely unAmerican, freedom-denying regime so naturally, liberals thought it was their long-lost brother. Like communism. Man that was a long time ago, but we as a society have learned less than nothing. Sad. Really sad

One incident I hope I’m not misremembering was that the narrator was on a plane that was blown out of the sky by radical Islamic terrorists. Just wow.

Fatwa is forever.

Paraphrasing Pamela Heller; Given a choice to support savages or civilized. Pick civilized.

Just found new news; this was definitely political the attacker wasn’t even a NYer but a NJ man with sympathies to the Iranian government.

Unfortunately just as there are evil Christians there are evil Muslims. I was unfortunately wrong in this case, it wasn’t the typical NY experience.

So for the first time in decades there actually was a terror attack that lacked FBI involvement.

Christopher Wray will be furious his agents didn’t help out he is trying to lay the case for war on terror 2.0.

#FJB <-- Disco Stu_ in reply to Danny. | August 13, 2022 at 6:28 am

No doubt some evil Christians have existed and exist still. However, in the great worldwide Evil vs. Evil competition, I suggest we examine the comparable leadership-directed body counts over the past 50 years.

Or 500 years. It’s not going to be close.

What you have asked would take a term paper to answer, even for just 50 years (although we have done a lot of evil in the last 20 years not even in the name of Christianity but in the name of “Democracy”). The Fall of Yugoslavia saw an actual genocide, Rwanda also saw a genocide, do you want to compare those genocides to the Darfur genocide?

Genocide is genocide it is the same crime.

I don’t think Islam is the true religion (I would be a Muslim if I thought so) and I do not share middle eastern or the values of Indonesia or Pakistan, but I do think we have a responsibility not to behave exactly the way the FBI does towards us, and to repent of when we endorsed that behavior by the FBI.

Muslims share a vast majority of your values.

        pst314 in reply to Danny. | August 13, 2022 at 3:19 pm

Danny: You are making a foolish and false equivalence: The core scriptures of Islam teach conquest and subjugation of non-Muslims.
As someone quipped years ago, “Jesus told his followers to preach to the whole world. Muhammad told his followers to make war on the whole world.”

Mary I don’t know if you read Bari Weiss’ substack Common Sense but she has an insightful article on this topic also.
