‘Traumatized’: D.C. Third Graders Say School Forced Them to Reenact Holocaust

One child is “struggling emotionally after being told to pretend to choke and die in a gas chamber.”

D.C. Public Schools started an investigation into Watkins Elementary School after third-graders said a teacher forced them to reenact the Holocaust.

I want to puke. No one should ever go through this, especially children in third grade:

In a letter sent to parents at Watkins Elementary School in Southeast, the principal says according reports he received, the re-enactment included “students being asked to portray participants from the Holocaust like Adolf Hitler, digging ditches to serve as mass graves, and simulated shootings. It was also alleged that the staff member leading the lesson also made anti-Semitic statements.”

Parents told FOX 5 DC how it affected the children, especially the child forced to portray Hitler:

“My husband picked up our child after school and there was a lot of sobbing and crying and distress,” the mother said.

She said her child was still struggling emotionally after being told to pretend to choke and die in a gas chamber and watching students simulate digging their own graves.

She said she’s also had conversations with other parents about how their kids are doing.

“They are traumatized. One parent said that their child was worried the teacher in question was hiding at their house. Children are having nightmares and generally having a very hard time,” she said.

She said the child who was told to play Hitler is “not doing well at all.”

The librarian insisted the lesson did not happen, saying “somebody’s misquoting what happened in the library.” but did not confirm or deny she talked about the Holocaust with them.

This is almost unimaginable, that school should be cleaned out of personal. Way to much for any kids in school.

This is the worst way to teach anyone about the Holocaust

Desensitizing kids to killing & death, and preparing them to eventually deal with “anti-vaxxers” who are a “danger” to society.

Although I question the usefulness of this lesson, I am perplexed at 3rd graders being traumatized by this

I remember vividly that a great deal of our group play consisted playing War or cops and robbers or cowboys and indians, and we all enjoyed dying graphically or killing each other with great resourcefulness. Death, torture and murder was a given in our bloodthirsty childhood world.

We crawled under our desks at school to shelter from the Bomb and somehow managed to grow up unscarred.

I am perplexed.

    It’s how kids are being conditioned now–be triggered and freaked out at all times. They are not going to do well in adulthood. And I’m going to be growing old when they are running things Not a happy prospect.

    You have got to be kidding me. You are perplexed? No, just lacking any experience w/ 3rd graders or anyone empathic. Hopefully you will stay far away from young children.

    Am I the only one curious as to how the teachers selected which kids were to be Nazis and which prisoners? And then trained them for the roles?

    Or why someone thought this was an appropriate topic for 3rd graders who would be lucky to be able to point to Europe on a map in the first place?

    This isn’t history, geography or social studies. This is disgusting counter-culture indoctrination.

      Why not the the 1994 Rwandan Genocide instead? 800,000 dead via clubs and spears in 100 days. African neighbors, friends and even family members brutally murdered with clubs, machetes and spears because of inter tribal hatred stirred up by rabble rousing extremists.

    The 3rd Graders of today don’t have the freedom to wander blocks from home. Most have never even heard of an air raid drill unless they watch old movies with their grandparents. My first elementary school had large windows in the classrooms, so we went onto the hallway for air raid drills, just like tornado drills.

    Are you kidding? Ever walk through the Holocaust Museum in D.C.? I was in my fifties and was so sickened by it I had to leave.

    Cowboys and Indians was completely different. We shot at each other but how many of us actually pretended to die? Hardly ever, and even if we did, we were pretending to die to fool everyone and then we jumped up and played some more. Kids today aren’t allowed to play like that. Heck, they can’t even play Red Rover!

Definitely NOT how you teach about the Holocaust (something I taught at the college level). WTF is wrong with these teachers?!

Why don’t they just invite a Holocaust survivor to come to their class and tell them about his/her memories? “Reenacting” is a bit distorting and artificial. Let’s reinact the Kennedy assassinations, the MLK assassination, or Nero fiddling while Rome burned. I want to make a papier-mâché grassy knoll!

    Having Holocaust survivors tell a class about their memories and/or interviewing a family member who is a survivor was part of my children’s education. However, the more important lesson of the Holocaust is not the left wing theological notion of “where was God”, but rather where was man?

They are 8 years old.

How could the possibly process this mentally and emotionally ?

“we all enjoyed dying graphically or killing each other with great resourcefulness. ” There’s a huge difference between children making up a game by themselves and children being told to engage in role play, with the roles assigned

On the bright side, fewer of them will now want to grow up to be actors.

Is bizarre.

I question the accuracy of this report. I can’t believe that any teacher or librarian, not even the wokest of the woke, would abuse children in this fashion. It was traumatic for me to watch Schindler’s List. No teacher or librarian could possibly want to inflict much worse trauma on elementary school children.

If the report turns out to be true, there should be criminal charges as well as firings.

    I can full on believe it. I’ve seen teachers do insane things and think it was okay and be genuinely outraged when called to task about it.

    That film made me cry too but at the age of 8 I was at school in Germany with war graves and holocaust memorials scattered about the landscape. At 13 I was at a school in which disabled people had been murdered by the Nazis.

    It’s part of history, not child abuse. I’ll support the suggestion it’s shit teaching, but it’s not abusive and it shouldn’t cause trauma.

      So did I. And the article it’s attached to (2015) shows this isn’t her first time screwing up:

      a tenured Atlantic City school librarian, who was convicted of fraud, then accepted into the pretrial intervention program, must still forfeit her job in the district.

      In a convoluted case, Kimberlynn Jurkowski, of Hamilton Township, was convicted Oct. 23, 2013, of defrauding the Hamilton Township school district of nearly $24,000 in a tutoring scam. The district had paid for tutoring for Jurkowski’s two children, but when the tutoring stopped, she and the tutor continued to bill the district for six more months.

      The Atlantic City school district notified Jurkowski on Oct. 30, 2013, that as a result of the conviction, her employment was terminated effective of the conviction date…

      And somehow she managed to squirm right back into the system.
      I’m shocked, I tell you, simply shocked.

I was a little surprised that they weren’t teaching them to deny it ever happened.

Being on the sharp end of the stick for the world we live in, I tend to expose my kid to more dangers, evils, and ugliness than other parents, but c’mon let them have a childhood.

For reference- the Elizabeth Smart audio book will be material my daughter gets the summer before 6th grade. I’d like to wait, but I know there’s shit birds just as evil as her kidnappers (and worse) roaming around the homeless camps in the town we live in.

apparently her teaching license in nj was revoked as a result of some tutoring scam she was involved in to bilk the school district out of the cost of tutoring services that were never performed–her license was revoked in 2017 for a period of three years

Soon they’re going to be forced to act out the rape of boys by Catholic priests.

    Better yet: to act out the molesting of students in PUBLIC SCHOOLS by faculty and staff. Dr. Carol Shakeshaft, Hofstra University, wrote the report commissioned by U.S. Dept. of Education, which showed 200,000 incidents of this in PUBLIC SCHOOLS during a TEN-YEAR period–c. 2000-2010. Contrast that, in your mind, with about 50,000 incidents of Catholic priests over a FIFTY-YEAR period. Hate much? Your Congressman can provide the report at your request.

A classic piece of reportage about the Washington DC local government appeared in the WSJ in November, 1993, under the byline of a relatively unknown muckraker named Tucker Carlson. It was called “Washington’s Inept Police Force.” You won’t find it anywhere on the Internet, though you’ll find it appearing in many footnotes to other documents that are. (I kept a copy, embedded in amber.)

Often it seemed that police officials weren’t interested in what an applicant had done before signing up for a gun and badge. Like other cities, Washington seals the criminal records of juvenile offenders once they become adults. Apparently the policy is not to eliminate people with criminal juvenile pasts.

To find out more, I called the recruiting office and spoke with Investigator Debbie Reid. I explained that I wanted to join the force, but was worried that my “extensive juvenile criminal record” would me that impossible. “No”, she assured me, “that alone will not keep you from coming aboard.” I then told her that, truth be told, my juvenile record was pretty bad. In fact, I said, I had spent considerable time in jail for an armed-robbery conviction. Surely that would disqualify me. Not necessarily, she said. “It depends on what your disposition was at the time.”

As word of the department’s new and inclusive hiring procedures leaked out, thousands took advantage. “A lot of people who were in the drug rackets joined the police department,” says former Washington cop Montague Holmes. “Some of them went straight when they joined the department, and some of them didn’t.”

Washington, it seems, is just chock full of second chances for dodgy people like Kimberlynn Jurkowski, or Marion Barry.

For squares like Uber driver Mohammad Anwar, not so much.

Like most Jew Hating crimes, this one is based in mental illness. In this case, it’s a combo of sadistic plus sociopathic disorders. Just what we need in DC.

This “librarian” is a child molester and an abominable criminal, the defining features of the typical Democrat.
