Texas Gov. Abbott Signs Election Integrity Bill After Enough Democrats Return
The Texas state Democrats theatrical production on voting rights came to an end on Tuesday.
Gov. Greg Abbott signed SB 1 into law, an election integrity bill to make it harder to cheat.
“One thing that all Texans can agree [on] and that is that we must have trust and confidence in our elections,” stated Abbott. “The bill that I’m about to sign helps to achieve that goal. The law does however make it harder for fraudulent votes to be cast.”
In July, the Texas Democrats fled to D.C. to deny Republicans the quorum needed to vote on the bill. They packed themselves into private planes and charter buses, which led to COVID outbreaks. Then people scorched them for asking people to send them care packages.
They even filed a lawsuit against Abbott for causing them “distress” from being away from their families. The pictures they posted said otherwise.
Three of the Democrats returned a few weeks ago. Stacey detailed the temper tantrums thrown by the Democrats who refused to return. It’s pretty funny.
Anyway, the bill passed, and Abbott signed it in Tyler, TX.
So why would the Democrats hate SB 1 so much? I honestly have no idea:
- No more 24-voting. Polls must be open a minimum of nine hours between 6 AM and 9 PM.
- No more drive-thru voting. You can only vote in your car if you have a disability.
- Video surveillance systems will record all vote-counting activities. There will also be a livestream of those activities in counties with more than 100,000 people.
- Electronic devices used to count votes with have tracking software.
- Partisan poll watchers can “observe election activity inside polling places and vote-counting centers as well as during curbside voting that takes place inside a vehicle.”
- It’s “a crime to deny access to a poll watcher.”
- The vote-by-mail application and envelope with the ballot require a driver’s license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number.
- Those who help people fill out ballots “must fill out a document listing their name, address, relationship to the voter, and whether they’re being paid by a candidate or political committee.”
- If you drive three or more people to the polls you must fill out a similar document.
- The secretary of state will work with the Department of Public Safety to compare voter registration rolls to identify “individuals who told the department they were not citizens while obtaining or renewing their driver’s license or ID card after registering to vote.”
In fact, it looks like SB 1 left out the problematic provisions. I could see why Democrats or anyone would have a problem with these:
- “One would have created a process to make it easier to overturn election results based on claims of voter fraud.”
- “The other provision banned Sunday morning voting, which was popular among Black churches’ ‘Souls to the Polls’ events during early voting in the 2020 presidential election.”
