Herschel Walker, the Heisman Trophy winning, former NFL player and Trump-supporting conservative, is running for U.S. Senate in Georgia as a Republican.
Walker will face off against far-left Democrat Raphael Warnock.
Greg Bluestein reports at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Breaking: Herschel Walker is running for U.S. Senate in GeorgiaFormer University of Georgia football star Herschel Walker launched a campaign Tuesday for the U.S. Senate with former President Donald Trump’s support, bringing both his celebrity and his untested political background to the premier 2022 contest.Walker becomes the most prominent Republican to line up against Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock in next year’s race, ending intense speculation that he’ll move from his home in Texas to Georgia to run for the office.Walker didn’t immediately comment, though a formal announcement is expected within days. He filed paperwork Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission establishing his candidacy, a move that came shortly after he registered to vote in Georgia. He entered the race after months of pleas from Trump, who predicted the former running back would be as “unstoppable” as a candidate as he was on the field. “Run Herschel, run!” he said in March.Walker’s lofty name recognition, combined with Trump’s seal of approval, makes the first-time candidate the instant Republican front-runner — and sets up a potential general election between two Black candidates in one of the nation’s top political battlegrounds.
You may recall Walker’s speech at the 2020 Republican National Convention:
The left is already sharpening their claws for Walker, as evidenced by this piece from Politico:
Walker was accused by his ex-wife of being “physically abusive” and displaying “extremely threatening behavior.” According to the Associated Press, Walker has also exaggerated the success of his chicken distribution business, Renaissance Man Food Services, and clashed with business partners. Walker openly discussed his mental health challenges by penning a 2008 book, “Breaking Free,” in which he disclosed he had multiple personalities that he was able to overcome due to therapy and his Christian faith.“He’s a dynamic guy, really charismatic,” said one Georgia Republican who met with Walker and discussed his potential campaign before deciding it wasn’t the right fit. “There are lots of questions about his past. He doesn’t want to really talk about it, and I’m not sure he knows that he’s going to have to talk about it anyway.”Meanwhile, state elections officials earlier this month began investigating Walker’s current wife, Julie Blanchard, for voting in Georgia’s 2020 elections even though her residency appeared to be in Texas, where the two have lived for years, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
This is to be expected. Democrats and their media allies are going to pull out every stop to make sure the GOP doesn’t retake control of the Senate. And as we all know, there is no one the left hates more than a black Republican.
I see a few Georgia Trump rallies in his future.
