At least three people, including a gunman, were reported killed and several others injured in an attack outside the main Synagogue and other locations in Austria’s capital Vienna. According to Vienna-based Krone Zeitung, one of the attackers blew himself up and others accomplices are on the run in what appears to be a coordinated terrorist attack.

“There are reports of a terror attack or a shooting spree near Schwedenplatze on Monday evening in Vienna. Multiple shots were fired and one of the assailant is reported to have blown himself using a suicide vest.” Krone Zeitung reported. “Several attackers are on the run. The police have told residents to avoid the nearby area.”

According to initial reports the active shooters were still at large in the city. Vienna police confirmed “six different shooting locations” amid ongoing manhunt.

Austrian authorities reported a ‘large-scale’ manhunt in central Vienna following the attack. “The private security for the Israeli community in Austria has advised all Jews resident to stay at home,” the newspaper added.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Twitter vowed “decisive action against the perpetrators of this repulsive terrorist attack.”

Austrian Army moved into the city as part of the counter-terrorism operation. “The Federal Army is taking over the task of securing buildings [an apparent reference to government buildings and foreign embassies] and thereby assisting the Vienna Police,” Austrian Defense Ministry spokesman Michael Bauer tweeted. Military Special Forces were also on standby, he added.

Associated Press  reported the terror attacks:

Austrian police said Monday that several people were injured and officers were out in force following gunfire in the capital Vienna.

Oskar Deutsch, the head of the Jewish community in Vienna, said the shooting took place in the street where the city’s main synagogue is located but that it wasn’t clear whether the house of worship had been targeted.

The synagogue was already closed at the time of the shooting, Deutsch tweeted.

Austrian news agency APA quoted the country’s Interior Ministry as saying that one attacker has been killed and another could be on the run.

Police said the operation in the center of the city was ongoing and urged people to avoid all open spaces and public transport.

“There are several injured persons,” police tweeted. “We are on site with all available forces. Please avoid all public squares in the city.”

Today’s incident comes amid several Islamic terrorist attacks in France, which began with the beheading of a Parisian school teacher on October 16. On Thursday, a jihadi beheaded a 70-year woman and two other worshipers inside a church in the French city of Nice. The attack was followed by the shooting of a priest on Saturday outside a Greek Orthodox church in Lyon, southern France.

(Author’s note: The initial death toll of seven was revised to three by major Austrian news outlets)

who could have seen this coming?

Authorities are mystified about the terrorists’ motivation. Could they be far-right activists? Proud Boys? Gosh, it’s a real head-scratcher.

European countries have two choices: (1) learn to live with it, or (2) expel them.

Headlines:
“Causes of anger against Austrians may be numerous”
“We must fight against Islamophobia”
“The only remedy for these tragic events is to increase our diversity.”

When a “religion” (actually Islam is an ideology disguised as a religion) literally calls for death and harm to Jews and Christians, in the Quran, the whole argument about “freedom of religion” is turned on its head. If there was a religion that called for death to all Leftists, I assure you there would suddenly be an awakening on the Left that looked more seriously at religions.

    How very true.

Islam is actually less malevolent towards Jews and Christians than to members of all other religions: Jews and Christians, as “people of the book” are allowed 3 choices: convert to Islam, submit to Muslim overlordship, or death. All other religions are allowed only conversion or death. I’m sure that Hindus and Buddhists can tell us a great deal about Islam.

Religion is a subset of ideology. All religions are ideologies. And there is no question whatsoever that, whatever else Islam is, it is a religion. And the framers of our constitution specifically said they intended it to be included in the freedom of religion that they wanted for the USA. Of course that freedom of religion never included a free license to break generally applicable laws with impunity.

      Incorrect….
religion is the branch of knowledge that deals with the methodology of worship and the praise of God.

ideology deals with the system of ideas at the basis of an economic or political theory.

“Worship or praise”?! What about obedience? That is what God wants above all. And that is all that Islam is about.

Ideology has no necessary connection to either politics or economics.

Your knowledge of definitions is not great and understanding of religion even less so…sorry but you are clearly out of your bailiwick

The savages are in the house. Good luck kicking them out now.

Just yesterday the AP and CBS were assuring us that Muslim terrorists only behead and stab infidels when secular blasphemers like the French drive them to desperation. So that’s changed? It’s so hard to keep up.

Most of the reports I see describe an attack “outside” or “near” a synagogue, rather than an attack “on” a synagogue:

https://twitter.com/robbiehawkins__/status/1323389843762778112

Chief Rabbi in Vienna Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister, who witnessed the attack, tells @TomSwarbrick1 on @LBC that the gunmen shot “at least a hundred rounds”.
He doubts whether it was an attack on the synagogue, “they were attacking the guests of these bars and pubs”.

No, he believes what his eyes tell him. Whereas you seem to believe only what you want to believe, facts be damned. Moron.

Reports I’ve seen say there were at least two separate attacks, both outside synagogues, but since the days are short, and Austria is about to enter a lockdown, the synagogues had all already held evening services and had closed.

It may even be coincidence that they happened to be near the synagogues, but I think it more likely that they had originally planned to attack the synagogues but when they saw that they were closed and empty they chose new targets of opportunity.

We’ve seen that before. When the neo-Nazi terrorist couldn’t get into the Halle synagogue last Yom Kippur, he shot some gentile bystanders instead. And when Omar Matteen decided at the last minute that Disney World was too well defended, he picked a nightclub to attack instead, not even knowing that it was gay.

Ah shucks, if there was only some way to identify who does what, where and why.

These are W’s people of Peace. W’s legacy has come home to roost, worldwide. Just like Chief Justice Roberts, everyone is now so tolerant.

Now, we have Homeland Haters and new government agencies to violate Americans… but, about all else, Islam remains what it is, doing what it does.

Nowhere in Europe is safe, or safer than a “radical” with a sharp knife and discerning wisdom. For all of that, at least they have strict gun laws.

The symbolism of Vienna being a target should be clear to everybody. The Siege of Vienna, the last major Islamic military campaign in Europe, begins anew.

The Religion of Peace, at it again.

I’d love to know by what rational one of the perpetrators is included among the “victims” of an attack. The victims are the innocents. Unlike the unsuspecting, he took his own life in his hands. Portraying him as a casualty grants him a dignity that he does not deserve.
