‘Peaceful Protesters’ in Portland Set Fire to County Government Building
But I thought everyone would calm down when the federal agents left the federal courthouse in Portland!
The latest riot in Portland proves it has everything to do with mayhem and nothing about black lives, systematic racism, or police brutality.
Rioters attacked the Multnomah Building, which has offices for the local sheriff, but mostly “houses offices for county departments that provide social services that have no connection to the police.”
The rioters once again hurt those they supposedly riot for:
Tuesday night’s fire damaged important county resources that have nothing to do with policing, officials said, including the county’s Office of Community Involvement, which aims to engage historically marginalized communities in local political decisions about social services and the distribution of public resources.“The lobby where the first same-sex marriage in Oregon took place, and where millions of pieces of personal protective equipment are being distributed to help our community battle covid-19, was damaged,” Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury said in a statement.
The first gay marriage in Oregon took place in the Office of Community Involvement. The fire damaged personal protective equipment meant for people battling the coronavirus.
The crowd of almost 200 people “started fires in dumpsters” outside of the building. They then smashed windows with rocks “and tossed burning material inside.”
That was not enough because “some people squirted lighter fluid inside the building and tried igniting the accelerant.” The fire eventually set off the sprinkler system.”

Sheriff Reese said destruction is serving no one.”A line is crossed when peaceful protests become violent, the unprovoked actions by those who engaged in criminal behavior last night is reprehensible, the damage and destruction, profane and hateful graffiti and setting fire to public buildings is simply violence,” said Reese.Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell weighed in with a statement, writing in part, “Breaking windows, using accelerants to ensure a fire catches and damaging property are not solutions, but further demonstrate the intent to engage in anarchy at the expense of the entire community. To effect change, we must work to build and not destroy.”Mayor Ted Wheeler wrote in part, “I continue to support and encourage demonstrations calling for racial justice and police reform. I condemn the criminal destruction that occurred last night at the Multnomah County Building. This type of destruction makes the community less safe.”
