UMass Lowell Nursing Dean Reportedly Fired After Saying ‘Everyone’s Life Matters’ in Email
“The university ended the employment of Dr. Neal-Boylan on June 19 after 10 months in her role as dean of the Solomont School of Nursing. As with all such decisions, it was made in the best interest of the university and its students.”
The cancel culture that is rampant on American college campuses right now has just claimed another victim. A nursing dean at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, has reportedly been fired after saying in an email that “everyone’s life matters.”
Where does this end?
Addison Smith reports at Campus Reform:
EXCLUSIVE: Dean fired after saying ‘EVERYONE’S LIFE MATTERS’ in email
University of Massachusetts-Lowell Dean of Nursing Leslie Neal-Boylan issued an email on June 2 to the Solomont School of Nursing in light of the recent anti-racism demonstrations across the country, sources told Campus Reform. In the message, Neal-Boylan told students that “everyone’s life matters.” Days later, Neal-Boylan was out of a job.
The sources shared with Campus Reform the email over which Neal-Boylan was allegedly fired.
“I am writing to express my concern and condemnation of the recent (and past) acts of violence against people of color,” Neal-Boylan wrote in the email. “Recent events recall a tragic history of racism and bias that continue to thrive in this country. I despair for our future as a nation if we do not stand up against violence against anyone,” she added.
“Dear SSON Community,” the email provided to Campus Reform begins. “I am writing to express my concern and condemnation of the recent (and past) acts of violence against people of color. Recent events recall a tragic history of racism and bias that continue to thrive in this country. I despair for our future as a nation if we do not stand up against violence against anyone. BLACK LIVES MATTER, but also, EVERYONE’S LIFE MATTERS.”
“No one should have to live in fear that they will be targeted for how they look or what they believe,” the provided email continues.
A student who received this email posted the copy on Twitter with a message stating that it was upsetting:
An upsetting statement made by the Dean of Nusing at UMass Lowell, including the statement ‘all lives matter’ was uncalled for and shows the narrow minded people in lead positions. A sad day to be a nursing student at UML. Dean Leslie Neal-Boylan your words will not be forgotten. pic.twitter.com/a9rTd4NGVP

The school responded:
Haley – Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The university hears you and we believe black lives matter. See the letter the chancellor sent out Monday. https://t.co/WIrxOSC8o9

Professor Jonathan Turley of George Washington University has commented on this at his blog:
University spokesperson Christine Gillette issued a statement to the site Campus Reform Wednesday that stated “The university ended the employment of Dr. Neal-Boylan on June 19 after 10 months in her role as dean of the Solomont School of Nursing. As with all such decisions, it was made in the best interest of the university and its students.”
What is particularly concerning is a June 19 letter referenced on the site that was allegedly written by Neal-Boylan and sent to Provost Julie Nash. The letter states “It is important to point out that no one ever gave me an opportunity to share my views of how the college and school were interacting nor explain myself regarding the BLM email. My meeting with you, [Dean] Shortie [McKinney], and Lauren Turner was clearly not intended to give me an opportunity to defend my actions. I was condemned without trial.”
The statement from the university does not state what specifically is “in the best interest of the university and its students.” However, the failure to specifically state the grounds and the process used to reach the decision is alarming.
In one of the most disturbing aspects of this case, as noted by Professor Turley, if you go to the university’s web page about Dean Leslie Neal Boylan, it is blank. She has already been erased:
Professor Turley reached out to the school for comment and received a vague response:
I contacted the University to confirm (1) whether Dr. Neil-Boylan was fired for her statement about “everyone’s life matters” and (2) whether she was given an opportunity to hear the complaints against her and to contest the allegations.
The university responded with this statement:
“Leslie Neal-Boylan’s employment at UMass Lowell ended on June 19, after she was informed she would no longer serve as dean of the Solomont School of Nursing. She had been in that role for 10 months. Although a tenured full faculty member, she declined to join the nursing faculty. As with all such employment decisions, it was made in the best interests of the university and its students. Although we are not able to discuss specifics of a personnel matter, it would be incorrect to assume any statement by Dr. Neal-Boylan was the cause of that decision.”
This suggests that there were other reasons for the termination but, if the letter posted from Dr. Neal-Boylan is accurate, she was not aware of what those reasons might be. If she is unaware of those allegations, this would be a rather Orwellian position where the university protects her privacy by refusing to confirm the basis for her termination even to herself.
Amazingly, other than Campus Reform and Professor Turley, this situation has received virtually no other media attention.

Evidently saying ‘All Lives Matter’ is now considered, on its face, ‘racist hate speech’.
The Dems blew a dog whistle a month or so ago and their activists everywhere — in the media, corporations, government run schools, ‘nonprofit’ foundations, etc — are responding. This strategy and these tactics were planned years ago.
Sometimes it is necessary to do distasteful things, use distasteful tactics to achieve a greater good. We are now in that situation.
We are looking at a Marxist-Islamist alliance which has significant control of social platforms, government agencies (swamp) and major media, all of which are using layers of disreputable tactics to gain control.
It is time to pull out all the stops.

UMASS-GRAVE’s Nazi action did not end Racism.
Things That Didn’t End Racism
If All Lives Matter is racist, only Black Lives Matter permitted, then White lives do not matter and can not be discussed. That is racist.
Will folk who say Black Lives Matter be sacked for racial supremacy?
Umm, it’s not that all lives don’t matter, but that (apparently) some lives matter more than others.
Sort of like the way all the animals were equal on Orwell’s Animal Farm, but some were “more equal.”
Perhaps there’s a PhD available to a student who can diagram the definitive hierarchy of life-mattering, as interpreted by the latest intersectional theories of oppression?
Passivity is fatal to us. Our goal is to make the enemy passive. -Mao Zedong

Folks, we are at war. And a HUGE part of the problem is the GOP.
Apparently the entire faculty and staff at UMASS Lowell agrees with her demotion as I am not aware of any objection being expressed by them, at least publicly. Or perhaps UMASS Lowell has an almost across the board group of cowards hiding behind desks and closed doors with their mouths taped and keyboards broken. Parents, is that bunch who you want to send your young adults to for an education toward the world?
If someone complains about it they’ll prolly loose their job …
It does do the job, doesn’t it.
The only way it stops is to go to every one of the freaks who support the crap. Dox them, write to their employers and get a circle of friends writing like the left does.
That harvard girl that was going to stab the next person that told her All Live Matters lost her job because of she got written up.
This one should be complained about also.

Very delegitimizing- enormously flattens the structural violence against Black Americans. Further, describing trans and gender diverse patients as having a “way of life” of “nontraditional gender preferences” is very concerning and retrograde. This should not be nursing in 2020.
I read 1984 as a teenager, which was a >long< time ago. I downloaded it last week along with Animal Farm and I'm reading it again. I completed Animal Farm in a day and presently I'm about halfway through 1984. This is very much like the process Orwell described when every single sign of someone who disappeared ("vaporised") was completely erased. It's as if they never existed.
"He who controls the present controls the past. He who controls the past controls the future." Frighteningly, it looks like George Orwell was a prophet. God help us.
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. IGNORANCE is strength.
Pretty soon, they will cancel 1984 for mentioning slavery (and for outing their handbook).
Didn’t Orwell use COMMUNIST Russia as his “inspiration?”
To some extent yes, although I saw not long ago that he looked at the direction Britain was going after World War 2 and took it to what he thought was a logical end with some futuristic technology thrown in. After fighting two world wars and being weakened to the point that it couldn’t keep the Empire from falling apart, socialism was the nation’s way of compensation.
Animal Farm was inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution and the first couple of decades the Communists were in power. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Just ask the pigs and the dogs.
Not so much Russia itself as communism in general. Orwell was anti-communist from the left. He saw communists as objectively right-wing. Read Homage to Catalonia.
For 1984? No, he used his own service to the crown in a foreign outpost, where niceties like the rat cage were actually employed. His model for MiniTrue was the BBC. 1984 was heavily autobiographical.
Comparing today with Orwell’s 1984 is to verify that Orwell was an optimist .
What the BLM crazies want is more like the Future world of Farnums Freehold.
RAH was right about so many trends it is almost depressing. Almost. I’m hoping to live long enough to see some of the more positive “predictions” come to fruition; based on the Future History Chart Woody Smith (aka Lazarus Long, etc.) is alive and well right now. Since I missed the chance to meet the Master himself I’m hoping that Deety and Hazel will pop by with Miss Gay Deceiver and take me to Tertius to meet that whole family!
After 22 years in the service I’m pretty sure I could collect a Viking’s Honor Guard of Black Hats to escort me into Valhalla.
Here’s something from haley#BLACKLIVESMATTER twitter feed: https://twitter.com/HUNCHO4KT/status/1267841183990124544
Apparently, ruining the life of a “racist” gives a high that’s better than drugs or sex.
I’m sure some of the guards at Auschwitz felt the same way.
It’s interesting how many of these “guards” are Gen Z white women who report “racists” back to the BLM big wigs or to someone of some sort of power.
It is called psychological flow.
Sometimes I think the only way this country can survive is if we put all the hard leftists onto a barge and propel it out into the middle of the ocean.
Too risky unless you open the scuttle.
Add illegals and all known Antifa, and make it shark infested waters.
Make that a Navy firing area; the one off San Clemente Island would be perfect. But why to you want to poison poor, helpless sharks with that spoiled meat?
Along with their “diversity” offices, the schools will now have a “hate speech” office which reviews everything you write before it is sent out.
If you don’t obey the “hate speech” office’s directives, automatic termination.
And if certain people get political control, automatic imprisonment.
“Along with their ‘diversity’ offices, the schools will now have a ‘hate speech office which reviews everything you write before it is sent out.”
I disagree. There is no benefit to reviewing it before it is sent out. The most effective approach is to allow it to be published so that then the punishment for the wrongthink is public and all can see what happens to those with the wrongthink.
It actually would be nice to have some writing guidelines, a little heads-up about what to watch out for.
The Elements of Woke Style
The problem is that the requirements change almost daily, along with the ebb and flow of power struggles within the revolutionary left.
And that is done consciously and delibrately as a form of attack.
So make it a web site, which you can consult every time you write something, to find out the current guidelines.
Like in the early days of Magic: The Gathering, when the rules kept changing and you had to go to the Wizards of the Coast web site to check on the latest rulings.
Wait, I know how we can do it! Let’s create a mailing list where we can circulate the latest directives from Party HQ.
We can call it, hmm lemme think, “JournoList”.
By E B Black, I presume you believe.
Revisionist literature, you see.
No, then they would have to document all the Catch-22s, which would not be in their interest. Put no black faces on your product box, racist. Feature a black face on your product box, racist. See?
There is reason to think that many problems will severe economic problems, and that those problems may help shrink or eliminate many useless departments.
A Death Spiral sucks all the departments not real workforce related into a deep depth of no return.
This is viewpoint discrimination.
It is also religious discrimination, since Christians believe that all humans bear the imago Dei and hence all lives matter.
I don’t know if the Dean is a Christian, but if so, filing a charge of discrimination with the EEOC is a possibility.
Truth be told, no one is defending the truth of what matters.
Free Speech is a Civil Right.
The phrase is meaningless in the first place. Matters for what. A real use (not when the word is on holiday) is specific about what it matters for.
What you do matters, e.g.
The school administration caved into pressure from a nursing student who has the maturity of a child. The dean’s email correctly expressed the goals of the medical field. I am absolutely floored. The school’s administration should be terminated.
They should be tried, convicted, and then exiled.
A Massachusetts state school? Puh-leeze. They’ll more likely award her the Order of Lenin.
You know the end times are a-comin’ when not even a hyphenated last name deters the wrath of the woke mob.
So what does “tenure” even mean now?
It has meant nothing for decades now except at the biggest richest universities.
Dr. Neal-Boylan is a fool. The most important thing one learns in life is you do not try to pet angry, snarling wild animal which is slavering outside your door. You either leave the door closed and hide in the house, or you lock and load , step outside the door and end the danger presented by the wild animal.
The doctor made the classic mistake of trying to assuage the hunger of the beast by partially identifying with its stated position. Unfortunately, if you are not a mind controlled, KoolAid drinker and identify totally with the party line, you are a dangerous heretic and must be destroyed.
I hope the doctor was smarty enough to negotiate a huge golden parachute. She should get a good attorney and sue the bas***ds.
OK. So I guess that nursing students aren’t allowed to be taught that “everyone’s life matters.” There are some whose lives matter, and others who can be left to die.
Now they need to go on and tell these nurses exactly whose lives don’t matter, so they will know which patients they should ignore and let them die in the hospital.
The University’s new motto is:
“Just Abort Them All.”
Exactly right, in a logical, systematically coherent time and place, OP2.
I’d think you’d agree, however, such intellectually honest instruction, consistent with its current, practical adventures, will be found exempt.
The Left is unaccountable to principle or policy, if anything at all.
Boards of Trustees and relevant legislatures: the lunch isn’t free, and you know that well.
What’s scary is that the Woke Bitchess appears to be a psychology student. Yeah, she’s going to improve the average mental health of America.
Whites are busy fighting COVID and worrying about out futures. Blacks and their Marxist allies are busy infecting our culture with rot and making the future not worth salvaging.
On a more.serious note, why have the rioters not burnt that univetsity down yet?
I am certain they can legitamitly say they did not fire her. What they did was demote her to a position they knew would cause her to resign.
The university’s claim that the dismissal wasn’t due to her use of that phrase would be more believable if they would come out and say that they agree, “Everyone’s Life Matters”.
But somehow I doubt they’d be willing to do so, since it would mean joining her in the tumbrel.
The lesson here for business owners… only take on *racist* customers; the woke crowd will cost you 10x more than you will ever profit from serving them.
*racist* = you don’t give 2 shits about the color of skin.
Saying All Lives Matter is like not responding affirmative to the Hail Hitler salute in 1939 Germany… if you don’t answer the salute correctly, they will come after you and destroy you.
I’m n not American, so I really ask to know. Aren’t any laws against this? Discrimination, 1st Amendment or something?
Time to sue. It may be novel, but it is necessary. Academics have certain freedoms of expression that are a given for the left. Turnabout is fair play.
“Although a tenured full faculty member, she declined to join the nursing faculty.”
So she could have kept her employment and just lost her deanship, like Hsu at Michigan.
I am not sure. Nor am I sure about the outcome of a suit or a contractual remedy I am unaware of. But I have read numerous cases of left wing professors re-instated after contestation of their dismissal, and it is time for more rational people to attempt the same. And, no, I did not down arrow you.
The chancellor has been told what to do as this makes no sense on the surface. Who is giving the orders?
She needs to SUE them individually and UMass ,,,, cripple them Financially. This BS must STOP ,,, its Insanity !!!
The problem is this country is that black lives have no power. There needs to be black representation that can improve the lives of black people. Start in the cities and work to get black people elected as mayor. In a few years it would be possible to have a black governor. After many years of hard work you may be able to elect a congressman or senator. And then if everyone works together really hard, using everything at your disposal, dead people voting, double voting, bringing bags of ballots in the trunks of cars, eventually, in twenty or thirty years it might be possible to have a black president. Then things will change. Blacks will get into college, they will rise to the top in every profession and there will be blacks in county government, blacks in state and federal government, blacks in the post office, black school teachers and principals, black college professors and deans and, black police chiefs, and black this and black that and there will be no need to riot or protest anymore. (sarc)
Then black lives will matter. It will be the main thing, the only thing that matters; and then if anyone is stupid enough to say, “All lives matter” they will be fired.
“…then if anyone is stupid enough to say, “All lives matter” they will be fired.”
Or repeatedly stabbed, and given an enraged moralistic dress down as they stand over you and watch you “bleed out.”
It is increasing difficult to have meaningful discussions with the black community when every time you turn around, they are categorically calling all whites racists and blames their pitfalls and challenges to the white communities oppressive behavior. They need to quit blaming others for their challenges and start looking into the mirror addressing the following critical issues. Black on black killing, single parenthood raising, propensity for higher percentage of crime rates, lower prioritization of education, and higher drug use. It is always easier to blame others before addressing the critical factors that make you a better person. Quit playing the pity and race cards and begin improving your selves and conditions.
These are the inevitable consequences when a nation forgets who and what it is and when some of its citizens reject the values that built and sustained it. But tearing things down, including history, does not help others rise. No life is improved, no family stabilized. I hate the probable fact that the real issue is we have a segment of our society that feels destroying other people’s lives when they face adversity is justified.
“Out of many, one” is our national motto. We seem to be practicing it today about as much as the unofficial one, “In God we trust.”
She is a public employee, and firing her for expressing political opinions is wrongful termination in Massachusetts.
She should sue, she will win.
I don’t think so, because (at least according to them) they only removed her deanship, and it was her choice to leave their employment altogether rather than join the nursing faculty.
And a deanship is the sort of public-facing job that a state employer can decide an employee is no longer able to perform because a statement has become generally known.
These people are really devious. Smart and evil.
And her non-faculty election? Does the MA statute address this?
Anyway, your point might be signalling an entirely different aim and goal of the dean than what readers are being led to believe is strictly philosophical and pedagogical on her part.
Point: Are her non-faculty election and her postulated demotion apparently without a faculty option consistent with MA law; is her entire employment status
The dean may just be doing some groundbreaking exploration in employment-law, rather than any internecine nature-of-nursing contending
(in case one of the meanings and legacies of Columbus’s adventures still matters).
She could be actually testing that law for reasons not yet clear to any and all following her career.
So it’s false that all lives matter and it’s certainly false that no lives matter. BLM should just drop the pretense and change their name to “Only Black Lives Matter”.
Step out from the shadows, you marxist cowards.
The only is silent, that is actually what they mean.
I have been a Nurse for 25 years and I will say this.
If any Nurse, regardless of the job they hold as a nurse, who doesn’t believe “All Lives Matter” doesn’t deserve to and should not be allowed to practice. Because eventually not believing that All Lives Matter will affect the care they give.
A la mode de the film Goodbye, Columbus
Goodbye. “Land of the free, and
home of the brave”.
Correcting all the misinstruction in the academy over the last half-century or more’s gonna be a real
bit–, going forward. And obviously, it needs getting done.
Hopefully, when we the people finally decide, a citizen-oriented, civics-geared cirruculum is long overdue and set our minds and public policy to fixing it, it will not be
too little, too late.
Evidently, it’s already very, very late.
Should this renaissance in American secondary education ever take its first breath at life, then UML-SSON’ s current action will be seen historically as not having kicked Dean Neal-Boylan out, but up!
The dean certainly tried to educate the mob at her school; therefore, she hardly failed her students and herself. In fact, I find, she reminded them of the best principle nursing has to offer humankind; the uncompromised, equal right to access high quality healthcare.
As her insistence on equality was roundly rejected, there will have to be either a reckoning for this egregious UML-SSON failure to lead and instruct correctly, or our social fabric will soon begin to disintegrate.
Sue the living daylights out of UMass and its political hack overseer, Marty Meehan.
Personally I would say file suit. Get to discovery so that the school can be forced to say out loud that ‘ black lives matter’ above ‘all lives matter’. Then let the Dept of Education take a deep dive and determine whether this clearly racist stance precludes eligibility for not only direct federal money but student’s ability to utilize Pell grants, federal student loans, GI bill etc at the school.
And someone should give Haley an emotional beat down to show her that she surely doesn’t matter. Piece of excrement. Who is raising these monsters?
I’m glad I’m not young. All this bs really won’t effect me . Only those behind me.
That’s a lot of peoples’ feelings.
The problem is they’re gunning for us NOW.
I figured that the people who will benefit the most from these riots are the lawyers hired to sue for wrongful dismissal.
Not so sure about that. These students will be nurses soon enough, and they now know whose lives don’t matter.
I predict by making this public statement that I will be hired as the new Dean of UMass:
“Nobody’s life matters. Death to everyone.”
Thank you for your support, now die.
