Media Hoaxes: No, Trump does not owe $200 million to Bank of China (UPDATE: Politico issues statement noting other reporting errors)

Politico viral report that Trump owes ‘Tens of Millions to Bank of China’ turns out to be Fake News, the loan in question was sold off by Bank of China in 2012. But that didn’t stop celebrities, politicians, Biden and Democrat operatives, and others, from sharing the story tens of thousands of times.

*Please scroll to the bottom for an update to this story*

Earlier this month, the Trump campaign released a hard-hitting ad criticizing Joe and Hunter Biden’s China ties. It’s an ad that set the stage for the US-China relationship as *the* major campaign issue in the months to come, thanks in large part to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

The Biden campaign tried to counter the ad with one of its own, but it backfired spectacularly after his own side accused the presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee of “xenophobic” attacks on China much in the same way Biden himself used the line on Trump after he implemented China travel restrictions in late January.

So with attacks from both campaigns against each other on China ramping up, how has the mainstream media reacted?

By siding with Biden, of course, which is exactly what Politico did on Friday with a supposed blockbuster piece that Democrats immediately painted as nullifying Trump’s China attacks on Biden.

In an article originally titled “Trump owes tens of millions to the Bank of China — and the loan is due soon,” they set the stage in the opening paragraphs:

Donald Trump is warning “China will own the United States” if Joe Biden is elected president.

But Trump himself is tens of millions of dollars in debt to China: In 2012, his real estate partner refinanced one of Trump’s most prized New York buildings for almost $1 billion. The debt includes $211 million from the state-owned Bank of China — its first loan of this kind in the U.S. — which matures in the middle of what could be Trump’s second term, financial records show.

Here’s how the piece looked when it first went live:

https://web.archive.org/web/20200424133727/https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/24/trump-biden-china-debt-205475

Politico made it very clear from the framing that they were going to more or less gift Joe Biden with an in-kind campaign contribution by way of a bombshell counter-piece to Trump’s China attacks against him.

But as it turns out, the loan was sold by Bank of China—in 2012. In an updated version of the hit piece, here’s what Politico added:

After the first version of this article was published, the Bank of China issued a statement Friday evening stating that it sold its debt on the building weeks after the 2012 loan on the property. Vornado Realty Trust owns 70 percent of the building.

“On November 7, 2012 several financial institutions including the Bank of China participated in a commercial mortgage loan of $950 million to Vornado Realty Trust,” said Peter Reisman, managing director and chief communications officer of Bank of China U.S.A. “Within 22 days, the loan was securitized and sold into the [commercial mortgage-backed securities] market, as is a common practice in the industry. Bank of China has not had any ownership interest in that loan since late November 2012.”

The headline has also been updated to simply read “Trump owed tens of millions to Bank of China.”

And this line, “But Trump himself is tens of millions of dollars in debt to China,” has been changed to this: “But Trump himself has taken on debt from China.”

They also added a few more paragraphs in an effort to try and rescue the central point of their reporting, but it didn’t work.

Breitbart News was ahead of the game on this story, debunking the most sensational claims well before Politico updated their piece.

As you might imagine, the left—from Biden campaign staffers to former Obama officials, to journalists, to liberal/NeverTrump columnists to left-wing celebrities—latched on to this story as being the smoking gun that would sink Trump’s presidency.

In spite of how the thrust of the Politico piece has been thoroughly debunked, don’t look for many if any of these people to delete their tweets. Because history has shown us time and time again that the left and their allies in the mainstream press make it a standard practice to deploy the “fake but accurate” defense when their attacks on Republicans backfire.

UPDATE – 4/28/2020:

Late Monday night, Politico issued a separate statement on their original report, further acknowledging their original error on reporting Trump “owes” the Bank of China millions. They also admitted to another error – but blamed it on a “mistake in the public record”:

There remained an unresolved discrepancy. A 2017 document filed by the loan servicer, Wells Fargo, with the New York Department of Finance listed Bank of China as having a financial interest in the building, 1290 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. That record, known as a UCC3, indicated that Bank of China had a “secured” interest in the building’s fixtures in case of default on the loan. The 2017 document is valid until 2022, when the loan comes due.

POLITICO attempted to reach other parties to the refinancing throughout the weekend and Monday. Wells Fargo on Monday confirmed the Bank of China’s statement that it had been listed as a creditor on the building in error. Bank of China said Wells Fargo is taking steps to correct the record with an updated filing.

Consequently, the story was updated a second time on Monday evening to take account of the apparent mistake in the public record.

In other words, their original blockbuster report has completely collapsed.

And all of those tweets from Democrats and journalists that I referenced on Sunday? Not a single one of them has been deleted. Because fake but accurate and all.

So Trump owed the Bank of China $200M, for about three weeks, eight years ago — back when he was BFF with the Clintons, and long before he even seriously thought of running for president. Yeah, I can see that’s a real serious conflict.

And no, Jennifer Rubin, that’s not why we have a foreign emoluments clause:

1. It doesn’t apply to the president, or to any elected official.

2. A loan is not an emolument. An emolument is a payment for services rendered.

The domestic emoluments clause does apply to the president, and only to the president. But it only bars him from receiving emoluments — i.e. compensation for his services — from any state, or (other than his salary) from the USA. He’s free to take side jobs from anyone else, and he’s free to take gifts from anyone.

Amazing how fast the lies spread, like they were tipped off (unlikely) or just mindlessly respew anything anti-Trump that the media spews out.

The Media Mantra
Lie to millions
Apologize to dozens (maybe)
Claim neutrality

Which is why we discount anything they say or print.

Stepping back for a moment: do most of us realize the situation we’re in? Effectively, the United States is under martial law because of a flu outbreak.

The left has engineered this to use to impoverish the country and steal the election with bogus paper ballots.

Does the PAID treason by the media, hollywood, colleges and the democrat party finally outrage everyone?

The Left always projects what they have already done and are still doing onto their victims.

So this tells us that the Media is in hock to the Communist Chinese for Hundreds of Millions of Dollars.

A very simple test will tell you if the news about Trump is false:

Does it make Trump look bad?

Then it’s false. Every time.

Milhouse in reply to Barry. | April 26, 2020 at 8:22 pm

Not true. Trump is a very flawed person, and lots of true things make him look bad. Which is why it’s all the crazier that they’re not satisfied with those, and keep inventing false things to attack him with.

clintack in reply to Milhouse. | April 26, 2020 at 9:12 pm

Totally right. And yet, the vast majority of the negative stories in the press turn out to be lies, or at least a really strained interpretation of reality. They *could* attack him for real things, but they choose to lie instead.

They just can’t help themselves. In 2016, it wasn’t enough to point out a long history of crude womanizing and bombastic self-promotion. They had to pretend that they had him on tape confessing to assaulting women and that he’d said that all Mexicans are rapists — when we could hear the tapes for ourselves.

Barry in reply to Milhouse. | April 26, 2020 at 11:33 pm

      Absolutely True, 100%.

But you, a neverTrumper, are as flawed as our media.

Name a true negative Trump story that anyone other than the left and neverTrumpers gave a crap about that has been in the news the last couple years.

We’ll wait patiently while hell freezes over.

Barry, that is unfair. Milhouse is not only not a NeverTrumper but has said on numerous occasions that he intends to vote for Trump in November. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater, eh?

NeverTrumper that has said numerous times he wishes Trump gone and Pence as his replacement.

All you need do is read the load of horse puckey below to understand.

They are skating down below now.

Milhouse in reply to Barry. | April 27, 2020 at 1:07 am

The past doesn’t disappear just because it’s old. Just as the cattle futures scandal alone should have disqualified Hillary Clinton from ever holding any public office, the Trump University scam should have done the same for Trump.

So should his racist attack on the judge, his inexcusable insinuation that Ted Cruz’s father was involved in JFK’s assassination, his attack on Cruz’s wife, his attempt to take that lady in Atlantic City’s house, his history of cheating so many suppliers and contractors that anyone aware of it would have to be nuts to do business with him, and so much more.

On top of that, until he decided to run for president he was a liberal Democrat, and there’s no reason to believe he had a sudden true conversion. So far he’s found it in his interests to act like a conservative, and the way the Dems have gone totally insane about him it looks like that will remain the case for at least a good few years, maybe even for the rest of his presidency. That’s enough to get me to vote for him, if only to watch the lefty heads explode. But his underlying instincts are still what they were.

          DanJ1 in reply to Milhouse. | April 27, 2020 at 8:01 am

Just imagine where the country would be if Hillary had won. Hillary would just now be reacting to the new strain of flu since the press would have pegged it as China’s problem and no big deal. But mostly, we would have a solid Liberal/Leftist Supreme Court and the Federal courts would be packed with Progressive judges for generations. A list of judicial overreaches would take a whole column, but let’s just mention one – 2nd Amendment.
          .
I for one have absolutely no problem with Trump’s, shall we say, shortcomings.

Barry in reply to Barry. | April 27, 2020 at 9:11 am

While down below, skaters are skating on the ice in hell, let’s review:

“Just as the cattle futures scandal alone should have disqualified Hillary Clinton from ever holding any public office, the Trump University scam should have done the same for Trump.”

So Milhouse the neverTrumper is comparing Trump University to Hillary Clinton’s scam in the cattle futures. Of course, left out of this is the fact that most of those that went to Trump University were happy with it. It wasn’t a scam cooked up by Trump, it was a scam cooked up by the political opposition to discredit Trump for an imperfect attempt at providing a means of learning the real estate market and how to profit from it.
It has nothing to do with corrupt Clinton’s cattle futures scam.

Milhouse has to include it to create his endorsement of this fake news.

“So should his racist attack on the judge,…”

Your opinion only. As we argued at the time, nothing racist about it. The “judge” was using his office and judgements in a political fashion. The judge is corrupt.

        “his attack on Cruz’s wife”

Trump attacked back. Cruz pac gave money to the pac that published false and misleading info about Melania Trump, including pictures. Don’t start a fight you don’t want. There was zero information about Cruz’s wife that was untrue.

“his attempt to take that lady in Atlantic City’s house”

That of course was the state of New Jersey. Trump has no imminent domain powers.

“his history of cheating so many suppliers and contractors that anyone aware of it would have to be nuts to do business with him, and so much more.”

More fake news. Trump is a builder, a big one. ANY builder that is in business long enough and big enough will have problems with shoddy sub contractors and suppliers. It’s a guarantee. You deal with that by not paying until they fix the problem. EVERY large builder does this. Milhouse knows nothing about that business and just repeats the scurrilous accusations.

Further, notice these people are almost always unnamed. As soon as you name them we can dig into the story and find out the truth. So, name them Milhouse. You can’t. You just repeat the prog/neverTrump canards, the fake news.

Oh, and what is “so much more”? Give it to us.

“On top of that, until he decided to run for president he was a liberal Democrat,”

Another neverTrump canard. He was never a liberal democrat as any perusal of his many writings/interviews would show going back decades. I said it when he was a candidate – he will be the most effective conservative president since Eisenhower, including Reagan. And he has been exactly that.

The proof is in the pudding, not your fatuous neverTrump wording.

“But his underlying instincts are still what they were.”

Yea, damn good ones. Period. Only a neverTrumper could think otherwise.

So you brought up all the leftwing commie BS propaganda spread by progs and neverTrumpers from the campaign stage, and not one new thing since the election occurred.

So. I was 100% accurate in my assessment.

And hell froze over and the ice skaters are having fun.

Omg, Barry, of course, Milhouse is right on this stuff. But, so what? Trump turned out to be a great president, and I am eager to vote for him in November (rather than against Hillary, as I did in 2016).

Well, in normal times, not the post-Obama world, this would have been and should have been disqualifying. I researched Trump U, and it was a disgrace. No, it’s not related to the Clinton scam, but that wasn’t Milhouse’s point.

Milhouse has to include it to create his endorsement of this fake news.

“So should his racist attack on the judge,…”

Your opinion only. As we argued at the time, nothing racist about it. The “judge” was using his office and judgements in a political fashion. The judge is corrupt.

Yes, agreed, this is bs, Trump is not a racist, and this was completely overblown at the time, and I’m surprised such weak tea is being offered up by anyone.

          “his attack on Cruz’s wife”

Trump attacked back. Cruz pac gave money to the pac that published false and misleading info about Melania Trump, including pictures. Don’t start a fight you don’t want. There was zero information about Cruz’s wife that was untrue.

There is no way to make Trump’s attack on Cruz’s wife’s looks good. Move on.

“his attempt to take that lady in Atlantic City’s house”

That of course was the state of New Jersey. Trump has no imminent domain powers.

Trump attempted to use his money, power, and influence to influence local government and take that woman’s house via eminent domain. This is well-documented and very real (and it was very wrong of him and shows that he thinks government should intervene for private business interests–NEVER the purpose of eminent domain).

Again, this is also well-documented. Trump has consistently failed to pay suppliers, consistently hired illegals, and consistently flouted all sorts of regulations and laws regarding both. This is just true. You can rationalize it, but it’s still true.

What we have to weigh, and what you, I, and Milhouse have weighed, is whether these past actions make him a bad president. They do not, in my book, because he has been an amazing president and will continue to be in his second term. Supporting him with the full facts and knowledge of his past actions is far more powerful than pretending he’s something he’s not. No one rises to the level of president without a track record of mistakes and problems. No “perfect” person would want the freaking job! LOL

Well, yes, he was and still is. He just knows his base and relents in most cases where he intuitively supports government intrusion. He supported big government and big government corruption for decades; he was pro-choice; he was (and as recently as 2018 still was) in favor of gun restrictions and blanket background checks, etc.; he restricted the sale of flavored vape juices; he refuses to even consider much needed cuts to the “big three”–social security, medicare, and medicaid; he’s a BIG spender (and was before coronavirus); he’s not even remotely interested in the national debt; and on and on. He donated consistently to Democrats, including non-New Yorkers like Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and both Clintons while rarely contributing to Republicans.

But again, so what? What he has proven to be, though, is indeed the most conservative president perhaps since Reagan (himself once a liberal democrat). That is what matters; how he actually leads and what he actually does while in office, and I have no complaints (well, kind of the budget is a problem, but for now, there are more pressing issues).

I don’t think it’s a good idea to demand mindless Trump support that completely obliterates his known, documented actions and statements. What’s to be gained from that? All that does is alienate potential Trump voters because they feel attacked for pointing out actual facts (and yes, these are really real facts, not spin or fake news; look it all up). We aren’t unhinged loons demanding loyalty to a shiny, perfect dear leader, right? Who does that?

Barry in reply to Barry. | April 29, 2020 at 12:34 am

“Omg, Barry, of course, Milhouse is right on this stuff.”

Nope. Not even close. He’s wrong and if you agree with it then you’re wrong.

” I researched Trump U, and it was a disgrace. No, it’s not related to the Clinton scam, but that wasn’t Milhouse’s point.”

Let’s start with the obvious, “but that wasn’t Milhouse’s point”. Well, yea, his point was that the Trump U was akin to Clinton’s cattle futures and therefore disqualifying. One, it wasn’t akin to the clinton phony and illegal cattle futures, and Two – had nothing to do with anything Trump.

Your research was a failure if it didn’t find that the vast majority of those that paid for the course were satisfied with it. As I said it was an imperfect attempt to supply a real estate education. It failed some people but not even close to most people.

But here is the important part – It was not designed as a scam. period. End of story.

“There is no way to make Trump’s attack on Cruz’s wife’s looks good. Move on.”

Well of course you want to move on, just as you did at the time it occurred. Cruz started it and Trump finished it. It’s campaign crap, that’s all. I didn’t claim it looked good.

“Trump attempted to use his money, power, and influence to influence local government and take that woman’s house via eminent domain. This is well-documented and very real (and it was very wrong of him and shows that he thinks government should intervene for private business interests–NEVER the purpose of eminent domain).”

You read the half of the story that makes you feel good. Research a bit more. Do I consider it wrong that Trump wanted that property? No, of course not. Is it wrong to try and steal it? Yes, of course. Is it wrong to use Imminent Domain to acquire it? In my opinion, yes. In the opinion of the Supreme Court, no. But it was and remains the state on New Jersey that was after the property. That is a fact. Every damn developer in any city expects help from the government in acquiring the properties for projects. Look at EVERY stadium project. Right, wrong, it is what it is. Trump is no different than any other developer.

“Again, this is also well-documented. Trump has consistently failed to pay suppliers, consistently hired illegals, and consistently flouted all sorts of regulations and laws regarding both. This is just true. You can rationalize it, but it’s still true.”

I’ll just note it is so “well-documented” that you provide zero, again zero, documentation of such. You provide the documentation and I’ll do the research. I’ve likely already done it as I looked into several “examples” given during the campaign.

To be clear, once more, every, and I mean EVERY big developer has subcontractor issues and they refuse to pay until the problem is solved. Every big developer has the same set of issues with subcontractors and illegals. Trump doesn’t micro manage each job, he has foreman and supervisors doing that work. They make the decisions at the subcontractor / supplier level. How many of those people that worked for Trump have you heard bad mouthing Trump? Any? I know how that business works. My oldest son is in the business at ownership level doing multi million dollar projects. They are now up to about 50m a year. They hire subcontractors all over the country, at least east of the Rockies.

This is perhaps one of the silliest arguments made, almost always just repeating what someone said, never any specifics. They are made by people that know the average person has no understanding of how big projects are produced.

“Well, yes, he was and still is.”

Just blatant outright BS. As I advised you during your anti-Trump days, go read the books, go read the statements. He is not a conservative. Good, they never ever conserve a damn thing. Conservatives have been holding hands with the left for decades now. What he is is very simple, an American that wants America to work for everybody.

He is exactly as I said he would be, you should remember – I said he would be the most effective conservative since Eisenhower, and he has been, 100%.

Mark Levin agrees with me. He has said it himself, the most conservative since Eisenhower.

Now, let’s remember where this started. I said:

“A very simple test will tell you if the news about Trump is false:

Does it make Trump look bad?

          Then it’s false. Every time.”

And Milhouse, a neverTrumper if there ever was one, took exception to that. And when challenged, all he can bring up are the tired old canards from the campaign. Not one item that has been in the news since the election. And now you, nothing new either. You simply rehash tired old campaign crap created by neverTrumpers and progs.

So, “OMG”, what I said was true.

I have nothing more to say, Barry. Not because you are “right” or you “win,” but because talking to you about this is utterly, demonstratively pointless. Milhouse is still right (and definitely not a #NeverTrumper),and you are still wrong. But I would spend my time more wisely watching paint dry than attempting to show you otherwise.

You have settled into some sort of delusional land that clearly makes you so happy you feel the need to spit venom on a near-constant basis. What joy is this you feel? What righteousness makes you so pleasant and happy? Heh, just joshing. We can all see that you are kind of bitter and mean these days, not at all happy and confident in your stance.

Nothing wrong with delusions, of course, but you can’t logic or fact anyone out of them, so I’m not going to try any further than I already have. \We’ll have to agree to disagree (can you still do that and not go absolutely insane? I think, hope, and believe that you can.).

Barry in reply to Barry. | April 29, 2020 at 12:19 pm

“I have nothing more to say, Barry.”

Of course not. You and Milhouse make accusations and never back them up. Words are the provenance of the progs, Milhouse is and you’re not, but you’re using that tactic.

So just to be clear, since the election you can’t even list one thing that the MSM trotted out to make Trump look bad and it was true?

You can’t find one contractor that claims Trump didn’t pay him so I can research the reason for you?

All you have is the campaign crap that oozes out from very pore of every side?

          That’s it?

          The delusions are all yours.

Barry in reply to Barry. | April 29, 2020 at 12:23 pm

“You have settled into some sort of delusional land that clearly makes you so happy you feel the need to spit venom on a near-constant basis. ”

Let’s get something clear, Milhouse responded to a comment I made that was not directed at him. You feel the need to be his savior, just like you did with that POS Ragspierre, who turned on you.

Then you turn to the ad hominem attacks trying to make the case those that disagree with you have some mental issue.

          Yea, there are delusions alright.

      A VERY flawed person?

      What a weird statement.

The man made himself a zillionaire, he raised GREAT children, he loves our country, he’s ALWAYS positive, he’s generous to a fault, he’s got a great sense of humor, his ex-wives adore him…

The guy is as close you get to perfection as any man.

Meanwhile diane feinstien has made millions in her dealings with china. So have the clintons and algore. The list of politicians, government officials, people in academia and the entertainment industry who have taken chinese money is long, but our msm doenst do investigative journalism on fellow lefties.

The left has engineered this to use to impoverish the country and steal the election with bogus paper ballots.

Communist China and george soros have bribed much of our country rather well.

Isn’t the media constantly telling us China is no threat and we should not worry about them? If that’s true, why should I think Trump was compromised by this deal?

Our current media is practicing “yellow” journalism in more than one way

I think you are posting this sort of thing (links, full text, etc. from other sites) for some reason known only to yourself. I’m not sure what that reason is, though.

In this case: globalist billionaires support globalist billionaire globalist dreams of global domination? Well, yeah, that’s what they do, right? Let’s see how this plays out, though, because it’s not at all clear globalists win this round.

The infantile, vile Dhimmi-crats can’t make up their minds — one minute, China is “good,;” the next minute, China is “bad.”

We saw the same song-and-dance with Russia. The Dhimmis can never decide where they stand with respect to bad international actors, because, their morality and their policy positions are as capricious and ever-fickle as the winds.

lord–how many of those who post here have the juice to borrow $200m from ANYONE, let alone a soverign government?

the dems/fascists/nevertrumpers have been looking diligently for years to find something on trump and
the best they can do is spin some minor nonsense similar to what millhouse has often posted with which to bash the president

come on–before his election, trump was playing for years in the rarefied air of international real estate development and was very successful–as you’d expect,
there are probably lots of folks the world over that are jealous/envious of his success–those who’ve been less accomplished/less successful than trump–the whiners, those with all the excuses

those folks are, for the most part, the ones TR referred to as forever sitting on the sidelines, perpetually criticizing the man in the arena

trump is a warrior and we are lucky to have him

You two should get a room, editor memory holer.

Tomato, tomato.

Big surprise.”

The Democrat party and the dinosaur media, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat party, continues to beclown themselves, without shame.
