Yale Psychiatrist Who Has Repeatedly Called Trump Mentally Unfit Refuses to Diagnose Biden
“I do not diagnose without examination and do not speak about public figures in general, unless there is evidence of such profound danger to public health”
Yale psychiatrist Bandy Lee has repeatedly called Trump mentally unfit for office, despite the fact that she has never even met him. This has been widely condemned as an ethical violation of her profession.
As concerns grow about Joe Biden’s mental health, Lee is now refusing to apply the same standard to the former Vice President.
As Professor Jacobson pointed out, watching Biden has become sad. It is obvious to anyone who watches clips of Biden campaigning, that he is not as sharp as he used to be.
Bandy Lee suddenly thinks diagnosing someone from afar is inappropriate.
Nancy LeTourneau writes at the Washington Monthly:
Brandy X. Lee, one of the mental health professionals who has been very vocal about Trump’s unfitness for office, explained why a declination to diagnose Biden is in keeping with professional standards.
I do not diagnose without examination and do not speak about public figures in general, unless there is evidence of such profound danger to public health and well-being because of serious signs of mental instability in a public servant, that it would be a public disservice not to share the knowledge and training that I have. Biden has not risen to this threshold…
I never spoke up about a president or a presidential candidate either before or after Donald Trump, and neither have thousands of mental health professionals who have come forth with similar concerns in ways that are unprecedented in U.S. history, for any president of any party. I only speak up when there is a medical need of such great magnitude as to risk the survival of the human species. This is definitively Donald Trump, not Biden. Nor is it Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, or any other false equivalences people wish to create for political purposes.
As recently as three days ago, Lee was repeating her claims about Trump.
Igor Derysh wrote at Salon:
Yale psychiatrist: Trump is “putting lives at risk” with coronavirus; Pence is “enabling” him
President Trump’s preoccupation with his own image amid the spread of the coronavirus is “putting lives at risk” and Vice President Pence is only “enabling” him, Yale psychiatrist Dr. Bandy X. Lee told Salon in an interview this week.
Lee is a forensic psychiatrist at the Yale School of Medicine who also teaches at Yale Law School and has spent the last three years urging Congress to respond more forcefully to the dangers posed by what she sees as the president’s deteriorating mental health. Lee, who consults widely with state and foreign governments on public health approaches to violence prevention, urged the House Judiciary Committee to include a panel of mental health experts during Trump’s impeachment and called for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to request an involuntary 72-hour psychiatric hold of the president.
It becomes increasingly clear that Lee is using her position to influence politics for purely partisan reasons.

“How does the Yale administration justify this?“
Yale is all about applying standards, so much so that they have two of them.
There is NO exception in HIPPA for public officials. It is HIPPA VIOLATION to announce anyone’s diagnosis.
Can we file HIPPA complaints?

As I always say, if it weren’t for double standards, the Left would have no standards at all.
I guess this woman doesn’t remember the Goldwater Rule established after Barry Goldwater was subjected to her kind of crackpottery in being beaten by LBJ. The American Psychiatric Association said never again would one of its members try to diagnose a public figure like a politician without a personal examination. The left finds all sorts of exemptions for rules and behavior when it comes to Republicans, even the spineless, mild-manner Grecian Formula candidate.
And that’s saying something!
The Bride’s brother and sister, ten and eleven years older than her, were diagnosed with Alzheimers on the *same day* two years ago. She was a basket case for a week. We see it in Biden’s behavior. Anyone else who has cared for a dementia patient sees it too.
.
Biden wanted to fight an auto worker over his desire to take away his “AR-14”
I suppose they will pick Tom Eagleton for VP.
Right on. Even though I’ve never owned an “AR-14” and don’t think one exists, I would oppose a law to confiscate AR-14s. That would serve as a platform for them to outlaw real guns next.
Armalite did design an AR-14, a semi-automatic sporting rifle. Biden appears to be like a broken clock – right twice a day but defective any other time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArmaLite
To have been “right” Biden would have needed to be referring to the “AR-14”, which he certainly was not.
Everyone knows that in context, he was referring to the AR-15.
Perhaps she does; after all, anyone can. But do they consult with her?
Sad that misfits like this populate our “top” universities.
Of course she won’t comment on Sleepy Joe’s status. She has TDS like the rest of the liberal leftys.
Assuming she’s tenured, how is it their business?
All employers have as their business their employees.
Wrong. The pronouncements of tenured faculty is none of the business of any university administration. Ask Prof J.
Wrong. Ethical violations of credentials are grounds for removal and/or censure of tenured faculty at any respectable university. Tenure does not give one a free pass to say whatever they wish. Try a day or two in higher education and you will know better.
One can still be fired for cause, such as incompetence. It just means that some type of due process is required.
Making statements that violate professional licensing standards in CT, the state Yale is in, would seem to be enough. She is licensed in NY, which has lighter standards apparently, but then let her teach in NY.
This woman is nuts.
Her statements do not violate any professional licensing standards, in CT or anywhere else.
What about HIPAA?
Biden has not risen to this threshold…… snip…..
Nor is it Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton
Allrightie then. Dr. Lee is obviously schizo.
From American Thinker, if you are interested.

The summary at the bottom was spot on.. If Lee represents the caliber of professionals at the Yale School of Medicine, that once-reputable institution is circling the drain, another victim of the leftist takeover of academia.
I can say Yale New Haven is a wonderful hospital. Since we live not too far away, we’ve used it several times. Truly wonderful, they do things right.
The psych building is separate, you can tell which one it is because it has windows that don’t open. Looks a bit like a prison. Nutcases like Bandy X. Lee are apparently locked in there, so everyone else is safe from them.
But they really shouldn’t give her an internet connection.
Tenured professors can be fired for illegal or unethical behavior. Such as violating professional codes.
There’s certainly nothing illegal about her pronouncements, and whether they’re unethical is entirely a matter of opinion. There can be no doubt that if the university were to take any action against her she would sue, and might very well win.
Speculation at best…Milhouse. Stop stating your opinion as fact, especially when you aren’t an expert in this field.
That they are unethical is not remotely in doubt Milhouse, stop trying to be so open minded your brain falls out.
That it is unethical is very much in doubt, in fact it’s in open dispute. The American Psychiatric Association says it is, many psychiatrists say it isn’t. By definition that makes it disputed.
It’s not actually that simple. From memory the APA is only one of several associations for
psychologistspsychiatrists, and at least one does not regulate political activity of its members – the American Psychoanalytic Association considers political commentary by individual members to be a private matter. The APA has the Goldwater Rule which explicitly states that “… it is unethical for a psychiatrist to offer a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and has been granted proper authorization for such a statement”. The AMA has a similar rule. Which organisation(s) is Bandy Lee a member of though?
Whether her conduct is unethical depends on the context she’s giving it in. The fact that she refuses to apply the same standard to Biden is evidence she’s speaking as a political partisan not an actual psychiatrist. The fact that she seems to limit her media exposure to left-wing publications suggests she’s really only interested in interacting with the echo chamber.
The fact that the person or people being unethical argue that they aren’t isn’t a valid argument for a psychiatrist pretending to offer a diagnosis for expressly political purposes being somehow ethical, you know that by any reasonable definition of the word ethical, that isn’t it Milhouse.
That has been proven wrong in at least two recent cases where a prof. spoke out on social media and was fired for what they said. Even though it was not on the university’s time or letterhead, they were deemed representatives of the school and thus were held accountable.
Can you name your two examples?

The others were in 2019.
Lots more examples:

I only speak up when there is a medical need of such great magnitude as to risk the survival of the human species.
As to risk the survival of the human species?
Is that just hyperbole, or is she just nuts?
That jumped out for me too. She is nuts and likely needs help herself.
“She is nuts and likely needs help herself” — Which would not be unusual for individuals in that field.
I’m sure once Biden were elected that she would aid in removing him for an intersectionally proper VP
Both.
I hate to say it but everyone I knew in college that was in the mental health curriculum was in it because of their own sever problems. I think that is still the case today. This woman proves the point and makes the case that she is indeed in need of help.
Yale was once a respectable institution of learning.
Another liberal indoctrination center where they have a good vocabulary.
Sheila Jackson Lee has a degree from yale
Nuff said
I am remembering what libs said about someone with a punchable face.
The standards at Yale seem to be in flux and can adapt quickly to changes. Sort of like a virus.
If my doctor, who is on the faculty at a local university medical school, tried to diagnose me with a serious disease without examination and extensive testing, I would turn him in in a flash. Yet she seems to think she can do that with a politician she has never met. If this isn’t unethical, what is?
.
Your doctor has an obligation to you. Some random alleged doctor in some state you’ve rarely even visited has no such obligation.
That’s quite simply untrue, once again. If a doctor in some other state were to attempt to diagnose you by any means at their disposal (no matter how speculative and vague), HIPAA would absolutely apply.
No, it would absolutely not. HIPAA lays out your duties to your patients. It says nothing whatsoever about people who are not your patients, have no professional relationship with you, to whom you therefore have no duty of care.
Dr. Lee is a professional shrink. When she diagnoses someone, she establishes a professional relationship with that person, because the diagnosis is an exercise of her profession. Therefore, when she diagnoses DJT, she establishes a professional relationship with him. It is not possible for a professional shrink to diagnose someone “unprofessionally,” that is outside of her status as a professional, especially when she is making her diagnoses while holding herself out as a professional in the field and therefore capable of making said diagnosis.
Bandy X. Lee … shouldn’t that be Bandy XXX Lee … sounds like a stripper stage name … maybe she practices lap dances in the faculty lounge.
The X apparently stands for Xenobia.
Isn’t she subject to the medical equivalent of a Bar Association which is responsible for supervising the ethics of the profession? If, as I understand it, her diagnosis of the President without seeing him violates the applicable code of ethics, shouldn’t that entity have taken action long ago? Then again, the old saw applies. If “elitists” and “progressives” didn’t have double standards they would have no standards at all.
She’s a two-fer: Asian and female. They may be quaking in fear over being tagged racist or sexist.
She meets their color quotas as an imperative to sustainable diversity and exclusion policy.
It violates the code of the American Psychiatric Association, which is an entirely private body. I don’t know whether she’s even a member, but even if she is she’s entitled to disagree with and defy its rules, and the most it can do would be to cancel her membership.
Whether bar associations have some sort of power over lawyers depends on the state. In many states they too are purely private entities that have no power beyond cancelling someone’s membership, if she was a member in the first place.
Not sure about the medical profession or I wouldn’t have asked. I appreciate the clarification. On the other hand, there must be licensing boards that perform the disciplinary function. Perhaps her actions don’t violate the licensing boards rules? BTW, Most state bar associations that I’m aware of are licensing bodies which do supervise the right to practice law often in conjunction with the state courts. That is as opposed to the American Bar Association which is a private group which many of us do not join and which has no authority over practitioners. In fact, many of us have avoided the ABA because its become a political cess pool.
But just think of all the physicians, including psychiatrists, who declare confused people– even children, preteens and teens– to be in need of “sex reassignment” surgery, perform abortions or enable assisted suicides. No one censures them because the “helping professions” are contaminated with PC, through and through.
Here are some possible avenues to enter a complaint. (Although I wonder whether “ignorant public comments” would count against her, the next time she’s up for renewal of her medical license.)
https://portal.ct.gov/DPH/Practitioner-Licensing–Investigations/PLIS/Reporting-a-Complaint
But she knows better than you, peasant. Just ask her.
“I do not diagnose without examination and do not speak about public figures in general, unless there is evidence of him being a Republican whose policies I don’t personally like, in which case I will happily diagnose without examination, and trash him in multiple public statements, because . . . OrangeManBad!”
Lee is nothing more than a political hack with TDS. The “psychiatrist” and “Yale” labels she hopes will make up for her logical and ethical failures.
The silence of both Yale and the profession of psychiatry are interesting. Are they both on board with her or are they both saying that her BS can’t cause further harm to damaged goods(themselves)? Or, both?
I have what many would call a less than enlightened view of psychiatry. It strikes me as being about one step this side of voodoo.
We call people like Lee. Hypocrites. Why she hasn’t had her license revoked is beyond me.
Bigots, really, sanctimonious hypocrites, who violate their religion (e.g. the relativistic “ethics”). Although, she’s probably Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic, and is technically, politically, socially inoculated.
Her NY medical license? On what grounds could it be revoked? She’s under no legal obligation to respect the American Psychiatric Association’s rules.
This will be my last attempt to bore through your thick, dense skull with facts.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. Mental health diagnoses are protected medical records. HIPAA absolutely applies. To actually remove her credentials though, she probably would have to have taken the extra stupid step of documenting her medical opinion. She thinks pretty highly of herself and acts like a raving crazy lunatic, so it wouldn’t surprise me if she has done just that. Your discussion of APA membership has ZERO to do with this. (By the way, the APA is a psychological association, not a psychiatric association)
You are wrong. A “diagnosis” of someone who is not your patient, and to whom you owe no duty of care whatsoever, is not the subject’s record and is not protected by HIPAA or anything else.
This is my shocked face.
…
Dr. Heal thyself.
He doesn’t present a danger simply because he is not significant.
She’s quite dumb. And corrupt.
What a great doctor!
“Not as sharp as he used to be”
Honest question: how sharp did Biden used to be?
Well, with or without counting his plagerism?
Reflects very poorly on the integrity of Yale University.
Don’t mess with corona Brandy or you get the fung schway…..
Is she a Yale padlock company employee?
My dad once hired an accountant who said he was from Yale ?My dad felt so proud of having a Yalie that he waited a week and remembered he never ask his name.
When he ask him he replied Yimmy Yohnson.
Well, with or without his history of plagarism?
Right. . . . and I just can’t help but wonder whether Dr Lee hasn’t already been intimidated by Joe’s patent misogyny, no less his scatalogic hypertactility — you know, his notorious tendency (no partisans-in-denial would dare call it a socially offensive compulsion) to, in brief, overtouch women publicly and invasively, and with a dash of coarse speech for any and all who question him critically but civilly.
I mean, c’mon, nobody wants to be told, “You’re fulla shit!”
Yih think, maybe, then, the ol’ veep just might be onto something about Professor Brandy’s sideline-shtick at Yale were she to practice some equal opportunity tele-pseudo-psychotherapy with Joe’s mentum — enough to keep her clinically distant (and sufficiently unethical)?
I don’t really know; again, I’m just wondering.
Anybody named “Bandy” needs to just shut up.
Because she’s a leftist hack, doing her part for the Movement.
“It is obvious to anyone who watches clips of Biden campaigning, that he is not as sharp as he used to be.”
When did Joe ever fit the definition of ‘sharp’?
I worked in a Psychiatric Hospital and what she has done is actually criminal. You can’t diagnose somebody you haven’t examined and you can’t release medical information to the public or even to a family member without a release.
