Democrats Enter Panic Zone Over the Rise of Bernie Sanders In Iowa and New Hampshire

Bernie Sanders is having his moment. With a week to go until the Iowa caucuses, Sanders is leading the Democrat field, according to a Siena/New York Times poll. The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Sanders way out in front in New Hampshire.

Some Democrats are starting to get nervous.

This Daily Beast report by Sam Stein, Hanna Trudo, and Lachlan Markay suggests that Democratic insiders never thought Sanders would get this far:

Worried Democratic Operatives Scramble to Fund a Network to Take Down Bernie Sanders

A group of loosely affiliated Democratic operatives have been in discussions about putting together an effort to attack Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) should he end up winning next week’s Iowa caucus and, potentially, the New Hampshire primary a week later.

The talks, which two sources described to The Daily Beast, are in their nascent stages, and have already hit a snag. Big money Democrats have shown reluctance at funding such an effort, which could consist of ads attacking Sanders, and institutions associated with Democratic politics have largely shied away from being part of any campaign that goes after the senator, either out of fear over the backlash or growing acceptance at the prospect of him becoming the party’s nominee…

The conversations have been driven by fear that Sanders could all but wrap up the nomination early in the campaign without having faced much pushback. Whereas in 2016, Sanders came under a barrage of attacks from Hillary Clinton over his voting record on guns and—more opaquely—the lack of diversity in his political coalition, the senator, who has significantly broadened that coalition since his last bid, has been relatively unchallenged this go around.

Democrats have valid reasons to be concerned. Bernie Sanders may play well to the Ocasio-Cortez wing of their party. Still, it’s hard to picture voters abandoning the booming Trump economy for the radical changes Bernie is proposing in a general election.

Natasha Korecki of Politico is also reporting on the Democrats’ late-stage call to action:

‘They let him get away with murder’: Dems tormented over how to stop Bernie

With Bernie Sanders gaining steam a week before the Iowa caucuses, tormented Democrats are second-guessing what they say was a hands-off strategy against the Vermont senator in the 2020 primary.

They fear a repeat of 2016 is in the making — when mainstream Republicans scoffed at the idea that Donald Trump could ever win the nomination, until he became unstoppable — only this time from the left…

Many Democrats say they respect the support behind Sanders but fear a self-described Democratic socialist would cede must-win battlegrounds to Trump.

“Swing states have a higher concentration of swing voters. We need a nominee who draws them to the Democratic column,” said Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor and chief of staff to Obama. “Sanders’ theory, like Trump’s for the right, is based on the notion of a higher turnout of infrequent voters.”

As Trump’s campaign theme song goes, you can’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need. In that same spirit, Professor Jacobson recently wrote that a Bernie Vs. Trump election is just what we need:

Bernie v. Trump is the battle we need, just as Britain needed Corbyn v. Johnson

It’s a long way from here to Bernie being the Democrat nominee, but who else will it be? Biden? Maybe, but there’s no energy there.

If Warren continues to fall, will her supporters go to a crony corporatist like Biden? Combined, the far-left wing of the party as reflected in combined Bernie and Warren supporters far outpaces Biden. If the far left coalesces around Bernie, there’s no reason he can’t win the nomination.

A Bernie v. Trump battle is the battle we need, just as Britain needed far-leftist anti-Western anti-Israel Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn versus conservative capitalist pro-Western pro-Israel Conservative Party leader Boris Johnson.

Bernie’s momentum puts Democrats in a real bind. What are they going to do if he takes Iowa and New Hampshire?

I do give Bernie credit in that he comes off as well-intentioned, if delusional.

In a field with a lot of people who come off as mendacious, I suppose that would help.

Of course, he’s quite hypocritical and a disaster in waiting.

Shall we cross party lines and vote and even donate money to make the Bernie Democrat Nomination HAPPEN?????

    BIG SMILE.

Bernie Sanders says exactly what he will do if elected, and doesn’t mince words. His closest rival on that is Senator Warren. That plain-speaking is what frightens the party bosses. I believe their thinking is that the real agenda must be couched in comfortable double-speak to fool the people they see as naive.

And this is when Hildabeast arrives on the scene.

So the Democratic party is so bad that all Democrat candidates are going to get swept out by an independent socialist? How do the Republicans EVER lose to these idiots?

Kill the Senate impeachment circus, retake the House and then purge the GOP Senate ranks of RINOs. THAT is the challenge before us. McConnell, Graham etal are not going to take us to where we want to go. They will just become new base of operations for the Democrats.

“retake the House and then purge the GOP Senate ranks of RINOs”

I’m on your side. Now, given that you think Ted Cruz is a “RINO”, who exactly do you think we can elect? Rabble rousing is all well and good, but it takes candidates (who actually tell the truth about their own beliefs/intentions), money, organization, money, voters, money…… BTW, you can lead the way in your own neighborhood by getting rid of Schiff and your own rep (Judy Chu?). Let us know how you’re doing.

I never said Ted Cruz is a RINO. My position is that he is a terrible politician whose political ambition blinds him to reality. He is unreliable. His astonishing meltdown after Trump zoomed to the top of the polls in 2016 was very revealing.

Suddenly, he was at the Mexican border with Glenn Beck handing out soccer balls and teddy bears to illegals crossing the border in Texas (you know, the state that, unlike CA, just refuses to build a wall?).

Then he toured the country with his kooky dominionist Christian father with Beck declaring that Cruz was Moses! He eventually joined in with the NeverTrumper crowd.

He’s a brilliant constitutional attorney but he is never going to be president. He is just not cut out to be a politician.

The real problem is that Sanders’ supporters are openly threatening to riot and burn down Milwaukee if he doesn’t get the nomination. What will they do if he loses the election?

Bernie’s unwillingness to run against the Democrat establishment is his Achilles heal. His supporters want to see him go full Trump on all of his fellow candidates and the Democrat leadership. He’s too weak to do that and having been in DC for a quarter century, he’s actually one of them. Democrats are up against it with his rise in the polls. Do they cheat him again and drive away his supporters or let him have the nomination alienating the moderates in the party? I personally think it looks like a brokered convention and who knows where that will lead.

I think the Dem establishment hoped that the Bernie crazies would flock to Warren once she copied all his policy positions but they want a genuine Communist not a pretend one from HLS and they saw right through her.

When she falls hopelessly behind one would expect her to cast her support for Bernie since they seem to be in lockstep but she won’t because she knows down deep that he is insane. She will use the issue of sexism to endorse someone else which will further enrage the Bernie nuts.

ConradCA in reply to Massinsanity. | January 28, 2020 at 1:58 pm

It’s not real verses pretend communists, it’s honest verses those that hide the fact that their a communist. Bernie is honest except he calls himself a Democratic Socialist because it’s not as scary as communist. The rest of the progressive fascist candidates pretend that their not communists because it makes it easier for them to lie their way into office.

I listed to the radio were they totaled up Bernie’s spending plans which amounted to 75 percent of current GDP. That would end up being 100 percent because of the destructive nature of his taxes. It would kill off all businesses and pave the way for the federal government to take control of all businesses.

In the last few weeks I’ve seen stories saying that the party is worried about Sanders, Biden and Warren. Basically, ALL of their top candidates frighten them. This is perfectly reasonable.

But, what we see in the news is only in the news because they want people to see it. Next phase will be the “spontaneous,” Draft Hillary phase.

Massinsanity in reply to irv. | January 28, 2020 at 10:47 am

It can’t be Hilary. She is nuttier than all of them… literally driven mad by the 2016 election. She sees Russians around every corner.

    Perhaps Michelle O.

Bernie is at least an honest Democrat. Rare in their neck of the woods.

J Motes in reply to Whitewall. | January 28, 2020 at 10:59 pm

Bernie is not a member of the Democrat party. The Dems could easily have sidelined him in 2016 and in 2020 by simply requiring that anyone who wants to run as a candidate for the Democrat party must actually BE a registered Democrat. I have never understood why a political party would allow someone who is not a member of that party to represent that party for a leadership role. It is like saying that a Christian group on a college campus must accept atheists as members and as leaders of the group. Well, at least they’re consistent in their irrational ideas.

I have a feeling that a lot of Sanders popularity is coming from his soldiers on the phone and door to door visits.

We live in rural New Hampshire and over the past three weeks have had phone calls from four different numbers calling to get us to vote Bernie in the upcoming primary. We also had a Bernie door knocker show up, now this is a rural town of 700 people where the houses are far enough apart so that you can’t see you neighbors. I met the door knocker in the driveway and after a few words on my part it is doubtful that they will ever visit our house again.

They have to knife Bernie in the back like last time…..but how? It was so much easier in a two horse race…..

    txvet2 in reply to jaudio. | January 28, 2020 at 1:32 pm

The same way, pretty much. The DNC controls the super delegates and they’ll vote for the party’s preferred candidate, just as they did for Hillary.

      notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital in reply to txvet2. | January 28, 2020 at 2:21 pm

…and failing that, the DNC will just literally knife Bernie in the back…… ala “Arkancide.”

The dems will never allow Crazy Bernie to wear the party mantle …. I predict a brokered convention.

The Democrat field is, in a word, pathetic.

I lose sleep, however, thinking that Michelle will enter the fray. It doesn’t matter if she’s qualified or not. Her husband wasn’t qualified either, and look what happened with him.

Heavy sigh.

I hear ya. My brother has been saying for months that the Dems will pull a surprise last minute Hail Mary by bringing in a “celebrity” candidate everyone on the left adores; maybe it will be Michelle…

ScottTheEngineer | January 28, 2020 at 11:23 am

They’ll do it the same way they did last time. Stab him in the back, pull all his funding then blame it on Trump Ruddian collusion to steal the election. Its retarded but perfectly sensible to Democrat voters.

This will be the end of the Democrat Party and the DNC. My prediction:
.
Bernie will go into the convention with the lead. He will win the first round but with less than half the votes. When it goes to round two, super-delegates will all go to Biden, the same way they went to Hillary.
.
There will be a major revolt and the far Left faction will revolt. Expect actual violence.
.
The Dems will lose all ability to claim that Trump is an illegitimate candidate because Biden will be branded with that along with further corruption claims.
.
Trump wins landslide victory and down ticket Dems suffer massive defeats. In 2021, both chambers overturn impeachment after fraud investigations of Pelosi and Schiff.

From your lips to God’s ears.

If we get control of the House and Senate we had best use this opportunity to drive a stake through the heart of progressive fascism.

    1) Education
    2) Immigration
    3) Deficit
    4) Judges legislating from the bench

    walls in reply to DanJ1. | January 28, 2020 at 2:48 pm

LOL. Bernie will give a passioned speech at the convention crying foul – and will be supported by AOC. The head of the DNC will erupt and call him a F’n Jew Bastard …. like Daley did to Ribicoff in Chicago in 1968. Then all mayhem will break loose.
