Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had numerous health issues in recent years, which is not surprising considering she is 86-years-old.
In July 2018, Ginsburg promised to hang on at least 5 more years, i.e., until after Trump’s first term in the hope a Democrat would replace him in 2020.
But her health took a downturn in late 2018, after tumors were discovered after an examination for fractured ribs. That resulted in a hospitalization and recovery that caused her to miss Supreme Court oral arguments for the first time.
NBC News reports on Ginsburg’s latest heath issue:
Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently underwent a fresh round of treatment for a cancerous tumor on her pancreas, the high court said in a statement Friday.
The three-week radiation treatment, performed at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, was administered after doctors discovered a “localized malignant tumor” on her pancreas July 31, the statement said.
The treatment — called stereotactic ablative radiation therapy — was administered in an outpatient setting for a three-week period that began Aug. 5. Doctors also inserted a bile duct stent as part of the treatment, which Ginsburg completed Friday, the court said.
In the statement, the court said that Ginsburg “tolerated treatment well” and that “no further treatment is needed at this time.”
“The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body,” the court said. “Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans.”
Seems like there is a serious effort to calm nerves — not Ginsburg’s nerves, the nerves of Democrats and liberals.
The reason everyone watches Ginsburg’s health so carefully is that a Supreme Court seat hangs in the balance. Mitch McConnell and Trump have promised to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2020. But there’s more.
Ginsburg is their Scalia, their everything. But they don’t control the Senate or presidency at least through 2020, so they can’t ‘Merrick Garland’ a Trump nominee to fill the Ginsburg seat.

Last time there was a nomination, I hadn’t seen enough opinions from Amy Barrett-Coney to be convinced she’s a top choice. I was thinking she’d be a pick for Trump’s second term if she puts in a few good years at the appellate level. But Trump has much better information than I do.

On a more serious note, I wish Justice Ginsburg the healthiest of retirements, with many relaxed years off the bench for her to critique the remaining members from the sidelines.
I’m not sure that prayers to the National Socialists are particularly effective, but hey, they will offer more bodies to throw on the altar of abortion as well, so their “god” might listen.
I don’t wish for her to die, yet the end comes to us all. My prayers consist only of asking that God confound the enemies of this country, that we might experience the best this country has to offer. I don’t pray to shorten a life, though I would not be saddened to hear she has her appointment to meet her maker. I am not a good enough person to say I wouldn’t rejoice at Hillary’s passing.

I have lost several long term friends and colleagues to this cancer. It usually kills very quickly, six months at most.

She went from Colon Cancer, to Pancreatic Cancer, to Lung Cancer and now back to Pancreatic Cancer. I would suggest she’s fought the good fight but her expiration date is fast approaching.

It is a press release, likely handled by a PR firm. My experience is that most PR people rank slightly below used car salesmen.
The stent most assuredly means she is not cancer free, as does the radiation treatment. Her cancer has metastasized.

Not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But I have been around hospitals a lot more than I like.
She has had malignant tumors, as noted, twice in the pancreas, once in the colon, and once in the lung. stereotactic ablative radiation was used on the latest pancreatic tumor, and a bile duct stent inserted. The bile ducts carry bile produced exclusively by the liver down to join with the hepatic duct which carries other products down to the cystic duct [thus forming the “common bile duct” which then flows down to the intestine. Note that the bile duct is at the top of this chain and is up by the liver. If the bile ducts are blocked to the point where a stent has to be inserted to keep them open . . . what blocked them? Noting that what was being dealt with near that location with radiation was a malignant tumor. Malignant tumors adjacent to/contained within the liver, even if excised or ablated, may still pop up in the liver. Liver cancer on top of all the other tumors she has had would probably not indicate a long life.
And noting that I got this from the internet so that it is not medical gospel by any means, but I saw that the stereotactic body radiation therapy was listed as only under study for pancreatic cancer. So this use might be taken as having a measure of desperation.
Are there any oncologists here that can discuss this purely theoretically? Of course, you cannot speak about her specifically in the absence of her being your patient, and cannot for ethical reasons discuss her if she is your patient, so theoretically only.

Not a doctor here, but given her advanced age, perhaps her doctors thought that the radiation therapy would be less risky for her than surgery? Even if the radiation therapy is still considered experimental for pancreatic cancer, it may have seemed like the better choice for a patient as elderly and frail as Ginsburg.
The stenting indicates that the tumor is in the head of the pancreas where the common bile duct courses through to join the pancreatic duct at the Ampulla of Vater. Since surgery is not being considered, the tumor may be considered inoperable. Tumor encasement of major vessels nearby is one reason for no operation. Or, she could be of such a health condition that surgery is too dangerous. The Whipple procedure is a BIG surgery for anyone.
The stenting may be proactive as better to get in when things are better than play catch up. Better to drain internally than percutaneous procedure, which I have performed as an adjunct to therapy. Hyperbiliremia is very uncomfortable… besides the patient looking like a pumpkin.
Radiation therapy has really progressed and can deliver maximum effect while limiting areas around the tumor from large doses. They note no spread… I imagine she is under monitoring at regular intervals and imaging found this… may be small enough to really be treated well.
If we all live long enough cancers will eventually hit everyone. She has enough cancers to raise the question of Lynch Syndrome. For now… another brush fire to put out. All the stops will be pulled out for her.

Three weeks of radiation alone would kill many people. And pancreatic cancer, along with glioblastoma, is about as bad as it gets. I have heard it called the cancer that gives cancer a bad name. So say what you will, but RBG is a very sick old lady.
She’s very fortunate that it was caught early the first time and she didn’t have an aggressive form. I have a friend who died several years ago, less than a month after his diagnosis. It took him fast and it was ugly.
I have a serious question, and I don’t care if people slam me for it. Would Ginsburg have lived as long as she has if she could only get the medical care a middle class family could afford under Obamacare?
I don’t begrudge the rich spend what they have to save the lives or the lives of their loved ones. But there must be a special level in Hell for those rich like Ginsburg who use their wealth and power to block others from doing the same. There were millions who had healthcare they were satisfied with who had it ripped away by Ginsburg and others who supported the clearly inferior government-run Obamacare. My husband and I had a dear friend from Scotland who died at age 60 because she was put on a months-long waiting list for a stent placement and died of a coronary before she made it to the top of the list. THAT, my friends, is the reality of national health insurance.

That’s what’s keeping her alive where private citizens of ordinary, or even well, means would have succumbed to the illness long ago.
She must be doing OK. The wife and I have tickets for a public lecture by RBG on Sept. 3 and it hasn’t been cancelled. The venue has been changed several times because of demand. Now scheduled for an 18,000 seat arena.

Her major opposition at confirmation was Jesse Helms and NARAL, etc. If I had the magic wand to replace a SCOTUS justice, it would be Roberts…he has proven to be dangerous, RBG is predictable.

The US Constitution mandates a republic, and has a Bill of Rights. Unless the Constitution is amended, those rights are unalienable.
On the other hand, no governing document will survive a nation of people intent on voting themselves into fascism.
I disagree the Constitution was formed presupposing a well-educated, virtuous electorate. In fact, the Constitution was a document designed by geniuses to be run by idiots. No further proof is required than looking at half the members of Congress.
Those rights outlined in the Constitution are unalienable even if the Constitution is amended. If amended to strip any of those rights, then the proper response of The People is armed rebellion and the hanging of legislators.
The Constitution of the United States will probably be regarded as the greatest document for (self-) government in history, the Declaration of Independence right behind it. But it is designed for a society that holds to the precepts of Western Civilization, and meant to balance regional and individual differences among Men. It is was meant for one unique place in the world.
It can inform other countries developing governments, just like other countries history, ideas, and documents informed ours.

We all wish her the best. Ideally RBG should step down and acknowledge the political reality, which includes her party fighting for her seat on the Court. But the current political climate precludes her from doing so.
To step down and give Republicans that opportunity to replace her would be part of her legacy, which she and her fellow travelers can’t abide. For the Left it’s better politics that Republicans SEIZE, rather than RBG step down and GIVE, the opportunity to replace her on the Supreme Court.
If she did the honorable thing and resigned, she’d get death threats from the cultural Marxists.
