This is the story that wouldn’t die.
Trump’s alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels is back in the headlines thanks to Trump’s own attorney, Rudy Giuliani.
During a Fox News segment Wednesday night, Giuliani said Trump reimbursed attorney Michael Cohen $130,000 over a period of months. A payment some claim was “hush money.” Guiliani revived the allegations in order to dispell any suspicion of campaign finance impropriety.
Trump has long said he had no knowledge of any payment to Daniels.
Guiliani’s comments caught the White House communications team off guard. According to the Washington Examiner, WH Press Secretary Sarah Sanders learned of the payments from Guiliani’s interview.
“The first awareness I had was during an interview last night,” Sanders said Thursday, a day after former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, now a member of Trump’s legal team, made the shocking revelation during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity….”The White House press office wouldn’t coordinate with the president’s legal team,” Sanders said, disputing one reporter’s suggestion that she was “blindsided” by Giuliani’s comments.
Thursday morning, Trump used his personal Twitter account to provide clarification.
Daniels hired a nasty attorney who is hellbent on keeping the story in the news while Daniels has spent the last several months basking in the limelight. Affair or no, none of this is exactly germane to the happenings and work inside the Oval Office.
If Trump did what he’s accused of, it speaks of character and issues in his personal life, but not necessarily his ability to do his job. And Trump’s supporters certainly don’t seem too rattled by the fact that he’s accused of having a side gig.
Trump may have had an affair with Daniels. He may not have. I don’t really care. Neither scenario would surprise me.
I’m sure I speak for an awful lot of people when I say that unless there is conclusive evidence one way or another, this story needs to die and stay dead. Same with all the Russia collusion stories. So far, that’s all they are — stories. For all the prodding and investigating, not one shred of evidence damning Trump or his associates has been made public.
I’m not defending what Trump has or hasn’t done, but it’s time to put up or shut up.
