It’s time for Elizabeth Warren to apologize for her Native American deception

Elizabeth Warren is not Native American. Yet she claimed to be Native American while climbing the law school professor ladder to Harvard Law School.

The details of what Warren did, and how she tried to conceal it, are set forth at Elizabeth Warren Wiki, a website we created to put in one place the research documenting Warren’s deception. It’s all there, including the rundown of her highly questionable, if not downright debunked, family lore stories.

Warren, however, has never come clean. There’s deflection after deflection.

How easy it would have been for her, in late April 2012 when the Boston Herald broke the story of Harvard touting her as Native American, for Warren just apologize.

I’m convinced that has Warren apologized in those opening days or weeks, it would be a non-issue now. Think how forgiving Massachusetts voters are — after all, Warren was running to fill the Ted Kennedy seat. In liberal Massachusetts, Warren would have beaten Scott Brown much more easily if she had apologized. Instead, she handed Brown an issue to run with and to keep the race close.

So here we are, almost six years later, and it’s still an issue for Warren. More than it being just an issue, being a Fake Indian is Warren’s brand. And that’s a branding Donald Trump, obviously viewing Warren as a potential 2020 challenger, has been pushing hard.

I explored Warren’s branding problem in Trump branding of Elizabeth Warren as Fake Indian continues, expecting her to run in 2020:

When Newt Gingrich spoke at Cornell earlier this semester, he made a very important point.Trump doesn’t attack his political opponents, he brands them. The brand for Jeb was “low energy.” For Rubio, it was “little Marco.” For Cruz, it was “lyin’ Ted.” Once branded, they could not shake the image.Just ask “Crooked Hillary.”Which brings up Elizabeth Warren…. Speaking at the NRA today, Trump warned that members should expect “Pocahontas” to run….Trump is branding her. And being someone who was a fake Indian is her brand. She’ll never shake it.

That branding has been so effective that even Bill Maher Refers to Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas”.

As explained many times, Pocahotas (or Faucahontas) is not a term we use because it is disrespectful to actual Native Americans. But it’s not disrespectful to Warren, because it mocks her for how she ripped off Native American identity.

The “Pocahontas” branding is back in the news today because Trump used that term, obviously referring to Warren, in a ceremony honoring Navajo code talkers who served in World War II. Both Trump’s use of the term at that ceremony and Warren’s claim it’s racist, were cringeworthy.

The Trump administration is trying to focus the controversy on Warren’s deception, not the term:

Trump has a gut instinct for these things. He’s doing irreparable damage to Warren’s brand, while his brand is hardly touched because the people who hate him will hate him regardless of what he does.

If Elizabeth Warren wants to rebrand herself, an apology for what she did would be a good start. But I don’t expect that to happen. She’s in too deep a state of denial.
