What the media missed at Trump’s press conference with Romanian president

The American media’s obsession with James Comey has distracted them from covering important Trump Administration actions (i.e., the appointment of 11 conservative judges).

President Trump has used Twitter and pressers like Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov used dog treats… to evoke a specific response. These diversions keep the “professional journalists” from noticing how rapidly and effectively Obama era policies have been ended.

Friday’s press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is a great example.

Trump is strengthening ties to the “New Europe”, those countries freed from the Soviet yoke to embrace capitalism and independence. As I noted in 2009, Obama’s treatment of Poland, the Czech Republic and the newly independent nations in Europe gave the term “ally” a new twist…with a knife.

As a reminder, Obama:

Media reports on today’s press conference may not note the reversing of Obama-era malign neglect of these nations. So, once again, a blogger is doing the work the American press won’t do.

President Iohannis stressed that a strong NATO was critical, and that President Trump was right for expecting that all participating nations pay their fair share.

I was in Brussels, and I met President Trump and I listened to his speech and I liked it. Because, you see, NATO is based on values, but it is ultimately a military alliance. And you know, military spendings are complicated and you need a lot of money, because NATO is the strongest alliance the Earth ever saw and we want to keep it that way.So we have to spend money for defense purposes. And spending money means if you’re in an alliance, everybody has to spend money. This is called burden-sharing. And I fully agree, Mr. President, to that.

Furthermore, the Romanian President highlighted the strengthening of business ties to this country.

And this is what we decided, President Trump and I, to make our partnership stronger, better, more enduring. And this will lead very soon to an enhanced economic exchange — to better commerce. And this is what we all decide and what we wish, because we are responsible, President Trump and I, not only for the security. We are responsible for the well-being of our citizens. And this is what we are deciding to do.

In fact, Eric Stewart, the president of the American-Romanian Business Council says that the US business community anticipates significant growth potential in the Romanian market.

Romania is gearing up for significant updates to its strategic capabilities, particularly in defense, energy, and cyber security,” said Steward in a statement in which the AMRO praises US president Donald Trump for meeting with Romanian president Klaus Iohannis….The association went on to say that the major military acquisition program that Romania is now considering can create business opportunities for American technology.

Further proof of this reversal from Obama’s treatment of the region comes from President Trump’s July travel plans.

U.S. President Donald Trump will visit Poland ahead of next month’s G20 summit in Germany, the White House said in a statement on Friday. The visit will emphasize the “priority of strengthening NATO’s collective defense,” and Trump will also attend the Three Seas Initiative Summit to “demonstrate our strong ties to Central Europe,” the statement said.

It is obvious that President Trump has a soft spot for Eastern Europe. If he is smart, he will bring Melania with him on the July trip.
