Thursday night, a man shot twelve law enforcement officers, killing five. Two civilians were also shot. Three of the wounded officers and one of the deceased were Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) officers.
Mark Hughes was wrongly identified as a suspect, but turned himself in and was quickly released.
So far, police have identified four suspects. Three are in custody, one is a woman. According to CBS News, they worked together with the goal of killing as many officers as possible.
According to the Dallas Police Chief, at least one suspect told the hostage negotiator he was upset over BlackLivesMatter, was upset about recent police shootings, and was upset at and wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. The suspect also told the hostage negotiator that he was not affiliated with any groups and that he acted alone.
After an overnight standoff, the suspect was killed when officers used a bomb robot to blast him out. “Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. The suspect is deceased as a result of detonating the bomb,” said DPD police Chief.
One of the suspects, a man with a rifle, fired shots while hiding behind a pillar.”We got a guy with a long rifle but we don’t know where the hell he’s at,” an officer could be heard saying over the police scanner.Brown believes this was a coordinated strike on his police force.”Working together with rifles triangulated at elevated positions in different positions where the march ended up going. … Why would you know to post up there?” Brown said….Two suspects were arrested in a traffic stop after a brief chase. One suspect was a woman who was caught in a community college parking garage.
The deceased suspect indicated there were bombs planted around the city and that officials would find them all eventually.
The shooter who was involved in the standoff with police claimed bombs were planted throughout the area. Dallas police, joined by ATF personnel, used bomb sniffing dogs to search the downtown area, and found no explosives, a law enforcement source told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.
