Dan Rather was Brian Williams before Brian Williams became Dan Rather

Dan Rather was Brian Williams before Brian Williams became Dan Rather

From Politico, Dan Rather backs Brian Williams:

Brian Williams is “an honest, decent man, an excellent reporter and anchor–and a brave one,” veteran newsman Dan Rather told POLITICO on Thursday.

Rather’s note of support comes after the revelation that Williams falsely claimed to have been aboard a helicopter that was shot down during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Williams admitted Wednesday that he was on a different helicopter, and apologized to viewers and crew members of the 159th Aviation Regiment.

Like Williams, Rather has been the subject of public controversy. In 2004, he was forced to retract a report on George W. Bush’s National Guard service after the authenticity of his source documents were called into question. Rather retired from CBS News the following year, ending a 24-year run as anchor of the Evening News. He now anchors “Dan Rather Reports” on the cable channel AXS.

Rather is now at cable channel AXS? What is that, Radio Free Siberia?

Anyway, if Rather says Williams is a good man, that’s good enough for me – Williams is lying.

And Williams claims he saw a body floating by his hotel during Katrina … but there was no flooding in downtown New Orleans by the big hotels.

He also claimed he was rescued from gangs in a stairway then, and is still friends with the cop that rescued him. Also very doubtful … looting happened in abandoned areas mostly, why would they go to a hotel with security? And most of those Superdome and convention center atrocity stories were debunked. (at about the 1:00 mark inthis link)

Here is the map of actual flooding. Not sure which hotel BW was at, but downtown did not flood, it is 6′-8′ above sea level, while the flooded parts are 6′-8′ below. The floating bodies were way out in New Orleans east … the surge came over the levees way to the east, where the whole ninth ward was so full the water was flowing over the levees OUT of the neighborhood, into the industrial canal. That’s where about 1000 died, not by Brian’s cushy hotel.

Levees broke and water slowly came in the north parts of NOLA, not into the main downtown or French Quarter. I don’t think anyone drowned from that part, maybe, but it was not by the big hotels.

When Williams is forced to admit he did not see any body floating by his hotel window, he will surely have to resign?

“And Williams claims he saw a body floating by his hotel during Katrina …”

    Dude! Context!

New Orleans…especially the French Quarter…is HAUNTED. Hell, I’ve seen bodies floating by…and not during Mardi Graux.

Midwest Rhino in reply to Ragspierre. | February 5, 2015 at 4:26 pm

      ha, yeah, well …

To me this is as big as the stolen valor thing, except he doesn’t seem to have repeated it as often. But maybe his record just hasn’t been examined on this issue yet. They need to find his old cop friend that supposedly saved him from those gangs.

If trauma consistently makes Brian fabricate such stories, he should write fiction, not anchor for NBC. Of course if he is just a bold faced liar, he is in the right place.

“They need to find his old cop friend that supposedly saved him from those gangs.”

Good point. Since they’re friends it should be easy. After all, Williams and the cop no doubt golf and drink together. Probably exchange e-mails and Christmas cards too.

You should definitely have him over for dinner, ladies.”

Has Hillary chimed in on this? Have her Bosnian bullet wounds healed?

Elizabeth Warren, an expert on truthieness, believes him.

I’m writing a letter – hopefully an erudite one – to:

Ms. Patricia Fili-Krushel
Chairman, NBCUniversal News Group, NBCUniversal
30 Rockefeller Plaza
NY, NY 10112

urging her to fire Williams without delay. He lied repeatedly and his colleagues at NBC News said and did nothing. Thus they are liars by association. So NBC News is an organization that fosters a culture where people can lie and get away with it.

I watch Williams (wife likes him), and he lies all the time, mainly by omitting to present both sides of his pet stories.

But lying in his personal narrative?? There should be no room for this at the network.

Mis-remember? I guess “It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”

Write this NBC News executive and urge your friends to do so as well.

Newsbusters, Hot Air, and other outlets are now checking Williams’ other claims. Right after Katrina, for instance, Williams claimed to have seen bodies floating past his hotel room window in the French Quarter…. except…. oh dear… the French Quarter wasn’t flooded during Katrina.

Already a delicious media elitist clusterfark, this case could reach Schadenfreude Level 5 before Valentine’s Day.

“Hello, Marty? Buy popcorn futures, now!”

I guess it would only be appropriate for Williams to moderate one of the presidential debates in 2016. That way if anyone asks Hillary about her sniper-fire incident he can cover for her like Candy (bowl) Crowley did for Barry and his lies. What difference, at this point, does it make?

Henry Hawkins | February 5, 2015 at 5:40 pm

Hee hee. Another possible Williams fable… currently being vetted is Williams’ claim that during Katrina he swallowed flood water and got dysentery, and his hotel was overrun with gang members from whom one of the NO police officers stationed in the hotel had to rescue Williams.

Gang members overran a hotel where the police were staged? Hmm.

McAllister in reply to Henry Hawkins. | February 5, 2015 at 6:50 pm

Heh. Did Williams explain how exactly he came to swallow flood water? Perhaps he went swimming and didn’t know the levees had been overflown. Yeah, that’s the ticket. I was swimming.

What a reputation enhancer; an endorsement from Dan Rather!

Henry Hawkins in reply to MarkS. | February 5, 2015 at 6:23 pm

Hold on now. Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, and OJ Simpson also endorsed his honesty.

murkyv in reply to MarkS. | February 5, 2015 at 6:25 pm

This is the same guy who once said about Clinton..”I think you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things.”

Henry Hawkins | February 5, 2015 at 6:35 pm

And how convenient for headline writers that ‘Brian’ rhymes with ‘Lyin’.

Didn’t Brian also report live from the moon in 1969? I’m he was in the theater when Lincoln was shot and probably got blood spattered on him. There are some great photo shops out there of him in historical moments.
You really have to wonder about his family though, look up his daughter on the show Girls and check out her role and scenes. Ugh.

The Stars and Stripes reporter who broke the story says the pilot’s version (as told on CNN) of the event does not agree with the 5 crew members that were interviewed.

With all the distractions about his Iraq experiences, we’re never going to hear how he planned Normandy.

Gonzo journalism requires anti-reality drugs and/or narcissism of the highest order.

A good many real journalists get killed overseas in theater. You wonder when his own profession will turn on him.
