So this is the big bombshell?

The story she tells is not consistent with this 1999 interview in which she said Newt told her he wanted a divorce and she was totally shocked.

Brian Ross says that this is the only news in the interview, and that there is nothing negative about Newt’s speakership:

Drudge is playing it up as much as I’ve ever seen Drudge play anything up:

Update:  1995 flashback- Marianne Gingrich pledged to ‘undermine everything’ for Newt.

Drudge isn’t “playing it up” – it’s kind of a big story and if Drudge didn’t post it then one would think Drudge was dead.

The question is do you believe the ex?

Gotta tell ya – this is a “So what.”

In other news, Rick Perry is dropping out, and endorsing Newt. Evangelicals for Perry endorsed Newt yesterday as well.

This woman coming forward now with this story – how degrading for her. So sad. But for crying out loud, get over it.

Hell hath no fury like Drudge looking for a headline to make Mitt look good.

SJR
The Pink Flamingo

The left is going to use this as a club to attack Newt. But, in the lefty world, isn’t this the type of liberating relationship they say people should be allowed to have? Free from the shackles of chastity, honor and commitment? This sounds like he was setting up a typical left-wing Hollywood marriage. Those people swap wives and jump into and out of marriage like changing a pair of pants. But as is the case over and over again, it’s only news when someone on the right acts dishonorably.

Desperation. Establishment flop sweat. Quick — what other dirt can they dig up. With decades of soul-eroding compromises and collusions with the anti-American Left they’ve become like sick Renfield’s to the Left’s Dracula.

I go to drudge every day several times a day since sometime before 2000. I would say he has a pro Newt bias in his coverage. He is generally more sympathetic towards Newt delivering good news about him in ways that he does not do for other candidates. I would not say he is pro Mitt has his coverage of him tends to have a more of a satirical tongue in check edge to it.

I think if you take a 50 foot look at drudge after reading his news feed for well over a decade is that he is pointing out this sensationalistic attack as being a huge event in the election. That this may sink his candidacy like an Iceberg that sunk the Titanic, a historic and memorable moment. He’s covering it the way he is, is because as pretty much the last conservative standing, this may just destroy our hopes of taking the whitehouse.

“because as pretty much the last conservative standing”

I didn’t know Santorum was confined to a wheel chair 😉

Ryan in reply to imfine. | January 19, 2012 at 10:57 am

There’s a little media paranoia going on around here. Everyone’s out to get Newt, apparently.

syn in reply to Ryan. | January 19, 2012 at 11:23 am

My media ‘paranoia’ began the day after 9.11.2001 when the media was out to Get Bush.

My goodness the contortions which occurred in those days.

Is it ‘paranoia’ when the same pattern repeats endlessly in a loop, round and round, again and again, pounding away at truth?

In my experience, it is the same as it ever was.

Get Newt, is Get Bush, is Get Palin or whoever stands in the way of those driving the Prog’s narrative.

imfine in reply to syn. | January 19, 2012 at 11:43 am

I certainly do think they are out to get Newt, but I don’t think Drudge is one of them. I mean look at it, they are desperately trying to make this race about anything but the issues, whether its condoms, divorces, racial respect whatever, anything but the issues people want addressed. They want to take away our choice and make us “choose” between Romney and Obama. THats not a choice I want to make, or mostly any of the hardcore base of the party.

I’m amazed that people are blaming Drudge but not ABC! It’s he said – she said just like the Cain thing but nobody blamed Drudge for posting the stories on the Cain stuff. Stop the insanity.

Regardless of what is true and what isn’t, which is hard to tell in these cases, this is sure to knock Gingrich off message. The debate tonight should be interesting.

I’m not sure why people are attacking Drudge or ABC over this, however. Are we suddenly now in favor of the press suppressing a story because it hurts a candidate we like?

I’m also not sure why folks are so anxious to come to Newt’s defense over this. It has shades of some the bizarre defenses offered in favor of Cain. I guess we’re okay tolerating sexually deviant practices, so long as the candidate espouses conservative values in debates.

This is one thing, at least, we wouldn’t have to worry about with a candidate Santorum or candidate Romney. (I assume)

syn in reply to Ryan. | January 19, 2012 at 11:13 am

“we wouldn’t have to worry about with a candidate Santorum or candidate Romney”

We won’t know this until either are facing Obama.

And even if nothing is there, no doubt the media will make something out of thin air. TruthTrig and Blood Libel everywhere.

And the sorry part is, people will believe the contortions becasue they yet realize how far they are down the rabbit hole.

Especially the people who pay attention to politics less than seven minutes per week.

imfine in reply to Ryan. | January 19, 2012 at 11:19 am

Your absolutely right, we need more coverage and discussion of things like Condom bans no one wants. More editorial in depth coverage of why janitorial work is disrespectful for blacks. we need more infighting over personal issues and less coverage on say John Edwards affair on his dying wife or Mitt’s pump and dump scams.

ridiculous. Anyway its pretty apparent this woman still loves newt, and she is just spurned she couldn’t keep his affection. My big take away from this, is despite all this, she said he ran an incredibly ethical speakership. Even so much as praising him so. Wouldn’t that be an awesome change to have an incredibly effective and ethical president even if he was a bit of a philanderer a bit over a decade ago?

Who cares. This is stuff from 10+ years ago being put out by an ex-wife with an obvious axe to grind—who herself was a home wrecker. Plus, he’s sought redemption through faith since, and demonstrated that he’s a changed man.

Saving the country from the Obamapocalypse matters far more than Newt’s personal life from a decade ago.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall | January 19, 2012 at 11:04 am

I remember Drudge’s wiki entry once said he’s now mostly reclusive except that he speaks regularly with Rush, Ann Coulter (who both live in south Florida as does Drudge) and Breitbart. And I just confirmed it still says that – who knows how accurate it is.

We already know Coulter has been in the tank for Willard from day one. It’s going to be interesting to see how Rush treats this today.

I guess you have not listened to Rush in a while since he’s made it clear that team Obama are hoping for a Romney win and has stated that the establishment has the long knives out for Newt and the other conservatives.

He’ll say Newt is now getting the Cain treatment to force him out.

Old news being trotted out now to see if it can impact Newt’s rise. Who here doesn’t know about his past? Now, why did the MSM conceal John Edward’s affair, mistress, child etc… with a wife dying of cancer, and yet it feels that this is earth-shattering news? Trying to rattle Newt and get him off message? Well, it isn’t working out too well seeing as how he stated today that there are more important matters to discuss that are affecting all Americans, and his personal life is not among them.

StrangernFiction in reply to MAB. | January 19, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Yes, the new news seems to be that she believes he was ethical professionally. And isn’t that what we care about here?

Snorkdoodle Whizbang | January 19, 2012 at 11:16 am

“Drudge is playing it up as much as I’ve ever seen Drudge play anything up”

Yeah, that’s pretty much his schtick these days. Honestly, that’s basically what his site does: puts up a smarmy headline – usually in big bold Red print… sometimes with a cheesy flashing light or some such gimmick. But if you actually look at the story it links to, its usually pretty evident that the headline was way overblown and the story itself tends to be not nearly as earth-shattering as the pumped up headline.

I really haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to Drudge in quite awhile now. There tended to be no ‘there’ there.

The real bombshell are the poll#’s just announced by Rasmussen…Gingrich ahead

Cheater In Chief – Vote Newt 2012

So how does Newt win when Romney will take Virginia and Missouri since Newt is not on those ballots?

The best man for the job just ended his campaign. None of you are better off because of it.

I will NOT vote for a man who put no more value into his marriage vows than Newt did. We have become liberals who will now claim “it was just about sex.”

I am sooooooooooo disappointed in all of you. So much for sticking up for your values.

Calm down retire05….I too had wished for Perry but it was not to be….perhaps his own words will convince you why we must get behind Newt:

Perry news conference: “I ran for President because I love America.”

“Our objective is not only to replace President Obama, but to replace him with a conservative.”

“I believe Newt is a conservative visionary who can transform our country …. Newt is not perfect but who among us is … I believe in the power of redemption.” “”There is forgiveness for those who seek God.”

    abenson229 in reply to retire05. | January 19, 2012 at 1:24 pm

“I am sooooooooooo disappointed in all of you.”

Damn, now what are we all gonna do? Perry endorsed Newt, are you disappointed in Perry too?

Henry Hawkins in reply to retire05. | January 19, 2012 at 2:01 pm

I’ve lost retire’s approval. How exactly am I supposed to sleep again???

90% or more of posts around here concerning Perry have been positive, although no one could ignore the fact the guy simply wasn’t ready for prime time.

The fault with Rick Perry’s failure lies 100% with Rick Perry, and if the class he showed in rsigning and endorsing Newt is organic, he’ll be the first to admit it.

Grow up, retire. You whine like a child.

Give retire05 some time and space. Six months ago that was me speaking. But I’ve changed my view. In the last decade or so I’ve had to deal with character flaws and failures among family, friends and associates. They haven’t been perfect, but they’re all I have to work with. From that trouble have come delightful times, beautiful grandchildren and heart-warming character growth. I’ve learned to adapt.

If retire05 were choosing a guard dog for his junk yard instead of a national leader he might look for different skill sets and attitudes. In that case an old, cantankerous cur lacking otherwise redeeming behavioral characteristics might be the best choice. IMO the 2012 race winner will need those same attributes. I’m extremely comfortable with NLG in that position, more so than any others – except maybe SLP – but I’d never call her a dog.

Jake Blues in reply to retire05. | January 19, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Spare us the sanctimony. You go ahead and stay home, but if enough of your mindset do that, you get four more years of Obama. Whatcha gonna do then? Hmmmm? Stand on your principles?

Obviously, Matt Drudge has been promised a position as Press Secretary in a Romney administration.

Don’t forget that Drudge is good friends with Ann Coulter. Perhaps she has influenced Drudge regarding the smooth way Romney tricked liberals in Mass. into voting for him for the governorship so he could govern as a hard core conservative in a liberal state.

You guys all remember Romney’s governing from the right in Mass. don’t you? He was able to legalize homosexual marriage, get special treatment for Planned Parenthood, force a government mandate on the people of Mass. take federal money to pay for half of his states health care, raise taxes and “fees’ and of course the high quality workmanship of the “Big Dig” that happened under Romney’s watch.

But hey, he has been married to the same woman for 40 years.

Drudge is also close to Breitbart. I was disappointed to hear Breitbart say a few weeks ago that Romney was inevitable and the race was over.

Hillary was much more understanding.

Drudge is off the deep end on this. Never seen him attack a candidate as heavily as Newt. And I don’t like Newt.

retire05 | January 19, 2012 at 11:34 am

Your “holier than thou” attitude is a bit wearing, not only in this blog but in others too. I wonder if you have ever heard “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”(paraphrasing here)? After hearing about Mitt’s stashing his money in offshore accounts would it be O.K. to call him something derogatory?

StrangernFiction | January 19, 2012 at 12:02 pm

For those that didn’t see the video:

Ross: “She defends his tenure as Speaker…(cross talk)…and says he acted in an ethical way….” (2:30)

Yeah, some bombshell this is. This almost seesm like a net plus for Newt.

StrangernFiction | January 19, 2012 at 12:02 pm

oops seems

[…] and will endorse Gingrich.” Good news for Newtie, right? Well yes, and just in time because “it has come to this”: Newt Gingrich’s ex-mistress/later to be wife/later replaced by the new mistress/wife is […]

According to this article at the Corner at NRO :http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/288534/gingrich-called-her-husband-his-birthday-robert-costa

Marianne Gingrich left Newt in 1987. It was during their six-year separation that he met Callista. The article says that she called him on his birthday to say she was leaving. He came home to a house empty of everything except a TV and a guest bed. That pretty much undercuts her claim that she was “Newt’s closest and advisor and friend.” During the six years before he became Speaker, she wasn’t even there. Newt met Marianne after his first wife had begun divorce proceedings. He met Callista during a long, long separation that Marianne initiated. That takes a lot of the sting out of the whole Newt-as-serial adulterer/isn’t he as bad as Bill Clinton story.
It looks like Marianne was a big part of the problem.

    jimbo3 in reply to Burke. | January 19, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Burke, it looks like Gingrich probably also cheated on his first wife with Marianne because he married Marianne shortly after his first divorce.

Regarding going public like this, she’s done herself no favors. Just because you CAN go on national Tv to spill your guts doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

I feel sorry for her, not because of Newt, but because she has not moved on, what she has done to herself.

janitor in reply to Rose. | January 19, 2012 at 1:23 pm

My guess is the media went after her. Notice the lame pretext of investigating the go-nowhere FBI investigation. It’s the same-old.

Hmmm – didn’t this woman have an affair with Newt when he was married to his first wife? It must still bite to have been replaced by a younger, prettier, richer girlfriend.

theduchessofkitty | January 19, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Oh, she’s quite bitter! She hates him so much she wants to destroy him.

And she might get her wish…

Bear in mind, during the waning days of the 2010 elections, SC governor Nikki Haley also suffered accusations of infidelity and questionable character along lines of sexual behavior. The SC voters rejected the attacks. They’ll treat this the same.

Lady, it’s been twelve years. Get over it already. Her demeanor is that sll this happened yesterday and she is still grieving and deserves sympathy. Not a good actress and plainly has an axe to grind.

Nikki Haley deserted the tea partiers who put her in office and endorsed Romney. I wonder what Romney and the GOP has promised all these people who are obviously voting against thir prior statements and with such vigor too.

[…] Is it me, or does Drudge seem to be on an anti-Newt campaign?  The day-long banner he gave to Marianne Gingrich was as over the top as anything I’ve ever seen.  He even has a top link to Newt-hater […]
