Romney brings out big guns, shoots self in foot

Romney brings out big guns, shoots self in foot

Romney is losing it.  His coordinated assault on Newt does not make the case for Romney.

And it’s embarrassing.  Romney brought out former Congressman and former Senator Jim Talent to bash Newt’s leadership as Speaker. Talent forgets that the internet has a long memory, and that Talent supported Newt for Speaker of the House even after the issues Talent now complains about were raised:

Allegiance comes from Rep. Jim Talent, R-Mo., who says, “I intend to support the speaker”

As I mentioned last night, bringing John Sununu to the rescue just reminds us of the appointment of David Souter and the breaking of George H.W. Bush’s “no new taxes” pledge, in both of which Sununu played an instrumental role as Chief of Staff.

Gingrich is reacting as he should, Gingrich Camp Says Personal Attacks Will Backfire:

Gingrich and his campaign seem to be eagerly awaiting this attack. “Sununu doesn’t like Gingrich because Newt wouldn’t go along with his deal to raise taxes in the 1990 budget deal,” a Gingrich adviser tells ABC News.

Indeed, when Sununu was White House chief of staff for President George H.W. Bush, he now claims he thought Gingrich had agreed to the deal and reneged. Gingrich denies that account, but more to the point, this gives Gingrich an opportunity to remind Republican voters that he rebelled against Bush Sr.’s budget deal, which included tax increases.

Gingrich advisers say the question today becomes: “Did Mitt Romney support raising taxes in the 1990 budget deal?”

Throw me into the Sununu Briar Patch, they say.

We are witnessing a Romney campaign in disarray when even a Romney supporter like John Podhoretz tweets:

It’s been Romney’s problem all along, when he can’t make the case for himself he goes über negative, as he did in 2008 when he went negative on Mike Huckabee:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee blasted Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney as running a “desperate and dishonest” campaign and predicted the former Massachusetts governor won’t be the Republican nominee.

In other news, Romney gets the all important Meghan McCain endorsement:

Gingrich is the new flavor of the month, the current frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. He has seen such a dramatic surge in the polls, I’m actually scared. The idea of Gingrich becoming our nominee makes my stomach turn.

And David Frum too:

Prediction: if Gingrich has emerged as the nominee by then, the mood of that convention will be full unconcealed panic.

Mitt is so out of touch with normal Republican voters if he sends out Sununu to attack Newt for opposing a very unpopular tax increase. Sununu had to resign in disgrace because he used government transportation for personal use (including a rare stamp auction at Christie’s), was responsible for picking David Souter to the Supreme Court and was extremely anti-Israel (was only US Governor to not call for a repeal of the UN zionism=racism resolution). And this is Mitt’s attack dog? If this is the best he can do, Mitt is doomed.

Frum is the “windsock” of those who have their jobs in DC.
Since I’m really looking for a revolution to overturn the cozy crony capitalism that both the Right and the Left enjoy via DC, when DC is in panic but the heartland trods on, I know we are headed for a better place.

The descriptions of Newt are also interesting .. a Right wing progressive. Think about that for a moment. Was reducing nuclear arms with START (instead of institutionalizing them with SALT) “progressive” or whatever ? Reagan was a small “p” progressive. I can live with that.

And geez louise, all this personal cr@p is just amazing. After more than a decade of Bill Clinton’s “it was just sex” somehow, now, we are supposed to care. Reagan was married twice .. did that kill us ? Newt admitted his mistakes. Let’s “moveon” (without the org).

I believe that John Podhoretz has a history with Sununu. Podhoretz was a speechwriter for Bush 41.

We are not looking for the least bad candidate to lead our party, we are looking for the best candidate to lead our party.

We are not looking for a great husband, we are looking for a great president.

We need someone who can call the dems out on their insanity, not playact their policies.

We need someone who understands how washington works deeply and can thus bend the system to his will.

We need someone with the wisdom of Reagan, the lovability of Clinton, and knowledge of Newt and the debating skills of Newt or Reagan. So in my book he scores 2 out of 4 with good makes on the other 2. Newt has a strong chance of being a transformational President. As Rush put

People forget that Reagan was not perfect on all issues, but he got more of them right than wrong. Being a philanderer is only an issue if no one knows about it. Everyone knows about Newt liking sex with lots of women so no one has the expectation so it will be ineffective. The fannie/freddie scandal as it is, is more about conjecture so it will not stick. And the opposite will stick, Obama gave trillions to Fannie/Freddie. People hate that. thats about it. even Ann coulter couldn’t come up with a good reason in her new hit piece on Newt.

I’m really excited to see how this nomination process turns out. Whoever wins will be quite formidable, and I like that we really don’t know who it’s more likely to be. There’s also the approximately 5% chance that someone gets in in February, if both Newt and Romney blow up (Romney seems to be playing with his fuze), or they are tied to the point of a brokered convention that eventually picks someone completely different. Almost guaranteed not to happen, but what if?

Well Perry took his shots at Mitt early on in the race and stayed focused on Mitt’s record.

As a Perry supporter I’m glad he’s staying out of this dog fight which seems to be between Romney and Paul attacking Newt with Bachmann on the peripheral.

I think Newt’s support is fickle but his fund raising is improving and it looks like Cain’s donors are split between him and Bachmann. I’m sure Bachmann will pickup on her attacks on Newt.

Media is dredging the gutter.

Bachmann’s best shot on Newt is that he is a thrifty socialist. Socialist is socialist. Glenn Beck is hammering Newt on being the Teddy Roosevelt progressive.

fought against Bush42’s breaking of his Tax Pledge

Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act

      Balanced the Budget

      Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997

~ yeah, Bachmann calling him socialist was brilliant!

…well, if by “socialist” you mean “person directly responsible for reducing the size of the Federal Government more then any other person still alive today”.

And might I add, I sure wish we had more Socialists like that!!!

At the ever fickle intrade Mitt is still on top with odds..Newt is 2nd & Huntsman has moved to third.

Go Figure.

Support during the early, pre-primary stages of a campaign is inherently and always soft. A month before the first caucus, your support is soft whether you’re at 40% or 4%. This softness is not an argument for or against anyone – it’s the expected norm.

Check the polling numbers for either the GOP and Dem Party candidates for December 2007 to see what I mean.

Wow, is Mittens trying to get Newt nominated or what?

And seriously, Romney supporters must be feeling reeeeeeaaaallly good right about now knowing this is how he attacks his enemies. Whats he going to do against Obama, have Blago make a statement from his new cell?

I just hope Mittens announces his (Graham and JebB co-written) Amnesty-Plan before many of the caucuses take place so we can completely eliminate Romney as a possibility and get serious on who we are going to elect.

Newt really is awesome though – the “He’s mad at me because I didn’t like his tax increase” reply to the attack is classic, and to then turn it onto Mitt with the followup question is just brilliant.

Newt is showing he is best prepared to take on Obama and the “scorched earth” campaign he promised; while Mitt is proving he is the establishment-chosen lightweight many of us knew he was.

People should no longer be wondering why the GOP Establishment, the Media, the Progressives and the Obama Admin all endorse Mitt as the “only serious candidate” and “candidate by default” in the Republican field. God forbid we the people think for ourselves and elect who we want instead of just accepting whoever all of our enemies say we will take…

Since energy usage has become the equivalent of harlotry, murder & adultery, energy users are being threatened with the lake of fire by Adam, Eve & the Lord Jesus Christ. I am now married to Anders Behring Breivik 09/20/2011 by the Lord Jesus Christ. I already have children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Thank you for reading.
GOD IS NOT WILLING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL MIGHT BELIEVE ON HIS NAME-JESUS.Repent & be baptized! Jesus said, “I am God there is none besides me.” “I am the Way, the Truth & the Life. No man comes to the Father except by me.” “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” “As many as received Him to them He gave the power to become the sons of God the Father even to those who believe on His name.” Jesus’ healing ministry began with adult baptism.
A New Agenda: We the people need no gas & no electric to have a man child with the spouses of our youth around the world. We shall build homes without electric, without gas, without roofs that exceed 7 & 1/2 feet, & with incinerators to burn garbage, burn dung, burn urine, & burn blood rags so that the entire sisterhood has a man child with the husbands of their youth.
TAKE MY CONFESSION WITH YOU. I have smoked cigars for 11 years & have no lungs, liver & kidneys at 45 years old. I continue to live through the Lord Jesus Christ as I received the Holy Spirit at 4 years old & was baptized as an adult in 1997. I continue to read my Bible& now use burned dung, urine, blood rags & tobacco butts to make meat offerings to eat. The Old Testament says that burned dung, urine, & blood rags were a part of the laws of Moses. Yes, it was in 2001 while I was driving to Florida that I was talking to the saints in heaven & Isaiah said, “You know that 70 years from now the sun will be dimmed in the sky” Oh, I said, “I don’t know.” I went back over the Old Testament& it said, “The sun shall be dimmed in the sky” & “I shall make them eat the grass of the field.” & “all these things shall come to pass” before theLord Jesus Christ returns.
4 years ago I was stamping my feet at work over the excessive electric usage & complaining that I didn’t have a husband & children to God the Father. I prayed, kneeling at my bed as to adopting children. Then while I was at work I adopted over 500 children in Swahili (I was born with a spot-was a reject in Hebrew) to find out what day it was. I had been taught prophesy at Wheaton Evangelical Free Church in 1979 & 1980. We went back & forth in time while Governor Blagovich was verifying. We came up with 17 years of darkened sun before July 29, 2081.
July 29, 2081-the rapture of believers in Christ Jesus-all those who received the Holy Spirit-at the trumpet sound in heaven-1st the dead & then the living ascended to heaven in a twinkling of an eye
July 29, 2081-2088-the Great Tribulation-God’s wrath is poured out on the earth, Judgment of the Believers in Christ Jesus & the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in heaven
2088-3057-the Reign of Christ Jesus-(the Bible stated “1000 years” & in actuality it was 969 years)
3057-3059-the Devil is loosed out of the pit –(the Bible stated “a time & a half” & in actuality it was 1 & three fourths years)-the battle of Armageddon-the nations are drawn together for the last battle in the Valley of Megiddo-the Lord Jesus comes down of a white horse with the words, “King of Kings, Lord of Lords” written on His thigh & a sword comes out of His mouth to destroy all who are in the battle. The bible says that the blood runs a “horses’ bridle high” & birds feed on the bodies.
3059-the old heavens& the old earth pass away & the new heavens & new earth are created by the Lord Jesus Christ-at this point in time the Lord Jesus says,“Depart from me I never knew you.” to all who died in the battle of Armageddon, to those who took the mark of the beast in their right hand or forehead during the tribulation, to all who died during our time without receiving the Holy Spirit, & to all those who died during the flood of Noah’s day in wickedness. Jesus says, “In this world you shall have trouble, but I have overcome the world.”
Jesus says, “If we confess our sins He is faithful & just to forgive us our sins & to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Sincerely through Lord Jesus Christ & Wishing You A Merry Christmas, Allison Grace Karalus

agkaralus,

are you so arrogant as to sincerely believe you can tear down everything God created simply by driving a car or buying something made of plastic? And in merely about 100 years of modernization, Man will have done this? The Lord must have done a pretty crappy job of creation in your mind.

Besides, the pollution in the time of Jesus was as bad (per capita) as it is today, yet I don’t remember our Lord saying word one about “Climate Change” – why is that? You would think Jesus, of all people, would be smart enough to warn against such things as burning candles and such if the world was to be completely destroyed by such actions such a short time later. Instead, he was apparently so ignorant that he was compared to one of the many things which will supposedly destroy the world if we are to listen to the people claiming they need more power over peoples lives…

OK, back to the thread after that detour into someone else’s time zone —— I’m really happy to see David Frum’s comments because I still harbored a few doubts about Newt, but now that I know what David thinks I can support Newt with full confidence.

I’m pretty sure that if Huntsman were to surge in the polls, that Frum would abandon him too.
Frum reminds me of all those folks like David Brock and Excitable Andy, who figure out that the MSM don’t like conservatives (while claiming to be neutral), so their ideology goes with the money.

BurkeanBadger | December 8, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Here’s a bold and provocative prediction that is sure to stir up a tempest: Romney will win Iowa unexpectedly, win big in New Hampshire and never look back. Gingrich will meltdown as quickly as he exploded onto the scene.

I base this mostly on gut instinct and the fact that this is looking more and more like the Democratic primaries of 2004. With Newt as Howard Dean and Romney as Kerry (flip-flopping, anointed one” from Massachusetts). And everyone will be stunned, just stunned, when it happens.

Remember, you heard it here first. Romney will be the presumed nominee by Leap Day. And Gingrich and the entire GOP field will be out by St. Patrick’s Day (except for Ron Paul who will take his quirky crusade to the convention).

Subotai Bahadur in reply to BurkeanBadger. | December 8, 2011 at 8:26 pm

If such should come to pass, you missed something. There may well not be a Republican Party by the time of the scheduled convention. Or it may well be a very small thing, and largely DC based.

    Subotai Bahadur

At least Newt has a record. He can say “Sure, I’ve been divorced. But the first one divorced me. I’ve joined the Catholic Church and repented. But where are Barack’s old girlfriend?” Or he can drag out his college transcripts. Where are Barack’s? Sure, get out Newt’s voting record. Let’s get out every single item Barack voted “present” for, and ask him why, one item at a time. Why couldn’t you be bothered to vote up or down on this issue. Newt’s bad record is better than 0’s non-record. As for Mitt, well what did happen to his records when he was governor? Mitt has flipped and flopped.

BurkeanBadger | December 8, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Touche 🙂

Donald Douglas | December 8, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Well, Newt’s actually emerged as the one to beat so Romney’s gonna flail away, going negative, and hoping that the MSM will swat down his opponents. I’m not thrilled with the way the race is shaping up but “Anybody But Obama” will be my candidate, so there you go.
