My niece has been in critical condition in a hospital in Florida. She recently returned from Afghanistan and was set to move back to L.A. The head doctor gave her less than a 10% chance of surviving. He is now guardedly optimistic and calling it a miracle that she’s turning this around (knock on wood). She’s still critical, but it’s a vast improvement from a couple of weeks ago when there was talk of “do not resusitate” orders and the like.
She emailed me a couple weeks before this all started about how excited she was about coming home … and I could kill myself for not responding before this all started (I’ve really got to attack my procrastination problems … one of these days).
LukeHandCool (who is prone to periods of deep depression when he stops communicating in spoken and written form … but who will always be a diehard fan of the Professor and L.I. … and who faithfully read L.I. during this difficult time … and who will be unable to post next week when he is in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with his wife and kids … and his soon-to-arrive mother-in-law from Japan … and who is busily brushing up on his working-class-street-tough-Hakata-dialect Japanese to keep his ailing mom-in-law in stitches).
Got more good news from my sister today about my niece. I’ve learned over this last year that if you and your loved ones are healthy, you have almost everything.
LukeHandCool (who, when he witnessed the suffering his mother and neighboring patients in the hospital were enduring this last December, told his big sister to slap him if she ever saw him feeling sorry for himself … and who didn’t say it to his feisty spitfire of a little sister … because she would surely take him up on it. They are both my sisters, but very different!)
Did he mention how much we can save by winterizing our windows, or properly inflating our car tires?
I am still waiting for a National College Football Playoff Tournament. What is up with that? He promised. Let’s all get our priorities in order. A single elimination football tournament for the National Collegiate Football Championship.

No, windmills or ‘wind energy’ Professor. Nobody told him ‘answer with 140 characters’ on the keyboard’.
Wind energy. Well … what did you think this administration runs on? Hope?
LukeHandCool (who is often as talkative as a lump of coal in person … but who can be quite windy on the internets … any of them).
LukeHandCool (who has been relatively quiet here lately, perhaps pondering bigger things)
Heh heh Professor!

Prayers for your niece, LHC. I’m brushing up on my Chinese by watching cartoons to amuse myself.
Thanks so much, Juba Doobai!
