USC Commits Unforgivable Sin: Mascot’s Name is Similar to Robert E. Lee’s Horse
Except they’re spelled differently, and they have nothing to do with one another
Gotta give it to this student group — they worked extra hard to find something racisty where none existed.
From the LA Times:
…the brief performance before USC kicked off its season against Georgia Tech turned into one of college football’s iconic traditions. A succession of white horses named Traveler have followed — Traveler IX debuts this fall — trotting out of the tunnel as “Conquest” plays and the costumed Trojan warrior atop the horse waves a sword. But during a rally earlier this week to show solidarity in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., a USC campus group linked the name to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, whose favorite horse was Traveller.
At the rally, according to the student newspaper the Daily Trojan, Saphia Jackson, co-director of the USC Black Student Assembly, asked students not to be quiet, and reminded that “white supremacy hits close to home” and referenced the name of the Trojans mascot.
The Black Student Assembly did not respond to requests for comment, but questions about the name’s provenance have increased on social media in the midst of the national discussion on race.
Saukko died in 1992, but his widow wasn’t surprised when a reporter called Friday.
“The problem is this: maybe three weeks ago it was fine,” Pat Saukko DeBernardi said. “So now the flavor of the day is . . . we all have to be in hysteria. . . . It’s more of a political issue. The horse isn’t political and neither am I.”

And it’s a white horse!
Why can’t they use a horse of color?
And just what exactly did the USC WHITE Student Assembly have to say about it?
Oh – that’s right. There is no WHITE Student Assembly because discrimination on the basis of color is illegal!
Wrong. There is no law against having a “white student assembly”, but there’s no interest in having one, because being “white” is not a trait that creates a common interest.
Black people of all sorts, like any minority, have important interests in common, so it makes sense for them to seek each other’s company and to cooperate with regard to those interests. White people have no interests in common; they are the majority, they face no difficulties that they can confront together, so only neo-nazis have any interest in banding together around their “whiteness”.
THAT is about the largest pile of bull droppings and handwaving and conflation I’ve seen in a while.
Technically, the statement that there is no law that says there shall be no organizations protecting the interests of white people, is correct.
Ignoring the fact that these other groups you mention regularly attack and excoriate all whites, all men, etc., and thus pretending that there is no shared interest.
You actually believing the “easy setting” bullshit is also a hoot. See above attacks. Getting fired, having to navigate the bureaucracy correctly, fill out paperwork, or deal with life, we don’t get the black card, woman card, or any other excuses for why “it aint done right” – where I’ve heard “you only did this because I’m black|latino|a woman over and over again.
Ignoring the fact that organizations that have been exclusively male, etc. have been attacked for being such, and sued until they changed. Can’t NOT allow non whites, non males (but hey, all – woman gyms? No problem…)
Ignoring the fact that anyone coming to talk about issues of black crime or the evils of leftism and feminism has people rallying to shout the speakers down, pull fire alarms, etc.
We’re not even allowed to talk about these things without people getting beaten, and mobs breaking things and torching property on campus, and you spout that bullshit?
Dishonest moron.
Clearly, the solution is to tear the horse down.
Lee’s wife was named Anna. Therefore, by these students’ logic (or lack thereof), all women named Anna must be racist. And all people named Lee (Spike Lee, for example) must be named after Robert E. Lee as well. Nonsense.
