The good folks at the Competitive Enterprise Institute organize the hour-long event each year.
What is Human Achievement Hour?
Human Achievement Hour is CEI’s annual celebration of human progress! During this hour, people around the world pay tribute to human innovations that allows us to live better, fuller lives, and defend our basic human right to use energy to improve the quality of life of all people.
- Human Achievement Hour is the counter argument to the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Earth Hour, where participants symbolically renounce the environmental impacts of modern technology by turning off their lights for an hour.
- Symbolically or not, Earth Hour does little to protect the environment and is a misguided effort that completely ignores how modern technology allows societies to develop new and more sustainable practices, helping people around the world be more eco-friendly and better conserve our natural resources.
- Instead of looking to the “dark ages,” like Earth Hour, Human Achievement Hour promotes the idea that we should be looking to technology and innovation to help solve environmental challenges and problems.

- You can celebrate by chatting with friends or family on your phone or computer, watching the news on TV, listening and playing music, or even taking a shower thanks to the wonders of indoor plumbing.
- While Earth Hour supporters may suggest rolling brown-outs in India is desirable, we respectfully disagree. At CEI, we view reliable electricity as one human achievement people should celebrate, so keep your lights on for an hour instead!
I can think of no better way to celebrate Human Achievement Hour than PBS’s series, How We Got to Now (currently streaming on Netflix).
The series chronicles innovations from individuals often left out of the history books, despite their substantial contributions to societal progress.
However you choose to celebrate, we invite you to enjoy the brilliance of the human mind and all those achievements, large and small, that brought us to now.

Mother Nature wants us to live in the light, not in the dark fringes of penumbras; in a warm climate, not a frigid hulk; to reach for the stars, not the recycled dreams of yesterday; to stand tall, not cower under spinning blades; to be fruitful and multiply, and inherit her works.
Let’s give thanks to all that She has provided.
Progress is merely monotonic change. Let’s hope it’s something positive.
I’d like to thank all the little, unplanned babies that came before me. A special gratitude to the little boy and girl who matured, married, and as husband and wife, conceived, birthed, and nurtured me.
I turn on every light and run every electric powered device possible on earth hour. If I had time, I’d string up lights all over the outside of the house and light up the neighborhood.
God Bless the people who figured out to grind glass, make lenses, and coat them. And in particular, God bless the people who figured out how to make lenses out of high-refractive index plastics, because without them, I would not be able to see.
Going to read a book on my phone, check my laptop regularly and watch the new Daredevil on Netflix. I think keeping both a fan going and an area heater spreads the heat nicely.
Interesting, but i suspect the james Burke series Connections is probably better.
I missed it. While it was all going on, I was watching TV and drinking a craft beer, in our house with the electric lights on and the central heat & air running, while my wife used a laptop and the Internet to book a hotel room for our anniversary getaway.
In Östersund, Sweden under the advise of the Police, the town is keeping the lights on during the celebration to reduce the number women, little boys & girls and even men from being raped & beaten by illegal migrants.
Polisen gick i förra veckan ut och varnade kvinnor för att gå ut ensam på kvällen. På lördag släcks världen ner under en timme – men kommunen och polisen har kommit överens om att hålla Östersund tänt på lördag.Under tisdagen beslutade kommunstyrelsens arbetsutskott att gatubelysningen i centrala Östersund kommer att vara fortsatt tänd. Även under det timmes långa klimatevenemanget Earth Hour på lördag.Beslutet är taget på rekommendation av och i samråd med polisen – och det är den senaste tidens oro i centrum som ligger till grund för beslutet.– Earth Hour är ett bra och viktigt arrangemang, men i år väljer vi att ha tänd gatubelysning tanke på det som har hänt. Vi vill att alla ska känna sig trygga, säger kommunalrådet AnnSofie Andersson (S)– Vi från polisen tycker att det är en jätteklok åtgärd och att kommunen fattat ett bra beslut. En tänd belysning är trygghetsskapande och ligger i linje med våra gemensamma åtgärder för att öka tryggheten under rådande förhållanden, säger Stephen Jerand, polismästare.Angående utredningen kring kvinnoöverfallen i Östersund så växer den. Just nu finns det totalt 14 anmälningar, och det rör sig främst om olika typer av ofredanden där en eller flera okända gärningsmän förföljt kvinnor.
