Did Elizabeth Warren plagiarize her fake Cherokee recipes?

Did Elizabeth Warren plagiarize her fake Cherokee recipes?

The Elizabeth Warren Cherokee saga is like opening up a Russian matryoshka doll, there’s always something else inside.

Or perhaps more appropriately, like peeling back The Onion.

Please say this is not soooooo!

From Michael Patrick Leahy:

The credibility of Massachusetts Democratic  Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren took another hit today as Boston radio talk show host Howie Carr released evidence that appears to confirm Ms. Warren may have plagiarized at least three of the five recipes she submitted to the 1984 Pow Wow Chow cookbook edited by her cousin Candy Rowsey.

The two recipes, “Cold Omelets with Crab Meat” and “Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing,” appear in an article titled “Cold Omelets with Crab Meat,” written by Pierre Franey of the New York Times News Service that was published in the August 22, 1979 edition of the Virgin Islands Daily News, a copy of which can be seen here.

Ms. Warren’s 1984 recipe for Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing  is a word-for-word copy of Mr. Franey’s 1979 recipe.

Mrs. Warren’s 1984 recipe for Cold Omelets with Crab Meat contains all four of the ingredients listed in Mr. Franey’s 1979 recipe in the exact same portion but lists five additional ingredients. More significantly, her instructions are virtually a word for word copy of Mr. Franey’s instructions from this 1979 article.

When I first read the verse from Proverbs: “A lying witness lies.”, I thought “Duh.” But now I understand. She is a liar. Of course, with 0bama and the Clintons and the rest of the liberal-progressive-socialist-Democratic leadership she is in good company. Duh.

Wrong in one, wrong in many.

There are only so many ways to cook any dish. I’ve always understood that any change to a recipe makes it yours. It is nice, however, to acknowledged whose original recipe the variation is based upon.

Yep. Not much here except bad manners.

ThomasD in reply to Ragspierre. | May 18, 2012 at 1:30 pm

That, and holding the left up to their own standards and practices.

This is equivalent to the ‘teen Romney was mean to some dude in school’ meme.

      My own recipe:

      1 Sauce (chef’s choice)
      1 Goose
      1 Gander

      Some assembly required.

(disclaimer: I might have borrowed the essence of this recipe from someone else…)

Estragon in reply to NC Mountain Girl. | May 18, 2012 at 4:18 pm

One recipe she copied exactly, word for word. The other she copied exactly, word for word, but added five spices to the recipe. Otherwise, it is identical to the one published.

It is one thing to take credit for a family recipe or one passed around your circle of friends. Published material is copyrighted. That is plagiarism, period.

Ragspierre in reply to Estragon. | May 18, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Not to split hairs too finely, but…

copyright infringement and plagiarism are separate things.

You can have one without the other. There would be some overlap on the Venn diagram, though.

Estragon in reply to Ragspierre. | May 19, 2012 at 7:17 am

Yes, there is a difference, but it has nothing to do with this instance. Copying something exactly, or almost exactly, and attempting to take full credit for it as your own work is plagiarism, whether the original was copyrighted or not. Copyright infringement is a separate violation with its own distinct remedies.

But every word that was published in a major US newspaper in at least the last half-century has been subject to copyright.

So?

ThomasD in reply to Doug Wright. | May 18, 2012 at 1:31 pm

So, Elizabeth Warren’s idea of Indian chow is rather haute.

Frybread and soup beans it aint.

Doug Wright in reply to ThomasD. | May 18, 2012 at 1:40 pm

We could also say that she’s been “Chopped,” to continue with the cooking meme!

Or, we could simply say about her few accomplishments, “So!”

Nothing says authentic Cherokee chow like froufrou French food favored by Nazi-sympathizing royalty.

    Freedom Fries Syndrome ?

FYI Louis X!V & Marie Antoinette had a very hearty appetite & had a public lunch in front of an awed audience everyday at an overladen table .

I doubt you are talking of English Royalty for Cuisine has not been their forte since Henry V!!!s legendary binges.

Don’t tell me Angela you are the missing Tsarette Anastasia?

      Nyet.

Farney mentioned that the reprehensible Duke & Duchess of Windsor loved the omelet dish.

I guess they didn’t have much else to do after the abdication but sit around, eat French food, and praise Hitler.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to angela. | May 18, 2012 at 11:52 pm

Agreed -but the french are magicians with eggs. The only thing they ever took from england was Creme Anglaise -custard.

Mayonnaise is not native American cuisine; it was invented in France in the 18th century.

Gullibility knows no bounds…

Let’s discuss the diversity touting of Kenyan-born Obama in connection with affirmative action publicizing of his first book.

1. Did Elizabeth Warren plagiarize her fake Cherokee recipes?

If so, has she plagiarized anything else? I’m not making an accusation; I’m presenting a reasonable question.

2. A couple of weeks ago I commented re Warren, And search for other misconduct that has not yet come to light. They say that when you see one cockroach, you can count on finding others.

Keep looking.

Midwest Rhino | May 18, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Could we get a team of investigators to go through Warren’s garbage, or hack her email account and read all old emails?

Or is that only OK when Dem’s are attacking an honest Republican like Palin?

Milwaukee in reply to Midwest Rhino. | May 18, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Whoa, you’re starting to sound a little bitter there. However, examining the good Law Professor’s published works* ** would seem reasonable, just to see what sort of “originality” she has displayed. Has she a doctorate? What does her dissertation look like?

“Law Professor” was a pejorative when Governor Palin applied it to Barack Husein 0bama, since he wasn’t a law professor. But Elizabeth is. Does she call herself “Professor E. Warren, PhD.”?

*That is, her published works besides the cookbook. Since 0bama appears to have not written his “autobiographies”, has Elizabeth in her recipes published more than our dear leader?

**Isn’t looking through professional journals to examine Professor Warren’s writing a bit akin to looking through her trash? Best done with latex gloves and a facial mask.

      1. Yes. Going through Warren’s publications is one of the things I was driving at in my previous comment.

      2. Has she a doctorate? What does her dissertation look like? (p)“Law Professor” was a pejorative when Governor Palin applied it to Barack Husein 0bama, since he wasn’t a law professor. But Elizabeth is. Does she call herself “Professor E. Warren, PhD.”?

Presumably your questions can be answered via online search. My understanding is that she went to law school. The J.D., like the M.D., typically does not require a dissertation in the sense that the Ph.D. does.

      3. Since 0bama appears to have not written his “autobiographies”,…

Whatever. My practical concern is that some accusations, when not credible to swing voters, make it that much harder to defeat Obama.

Ragspierre in reply to gs. | May 18, 2012 at 5:58 pm

From what I can tell, Warren holds your garden-variety Juris Doctor degree.

She does not hold an LLM (an advanced legal degree), nor a PhD.

JoAnne in reply to ericjetta. | May 18, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Good work! So she got the recipes from a newspaper article where they both printed together! Well, at least she reads!

NC Mountain Girl | May 18, 2012 at 3:24 pm

No imagination at all. She could have easily switched out the crab for crawdad tails and called it a fusion dish using French condiments and techniques on a native staple. That’s what cooking is all about. My hillbilly stir fry uses Hunan lamb with scallions seasonings/techniques on local venison and ramps.

I R A Darth Aggie | May 18, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Isn’t “crab” Cherokee for “dog”?

Also, Teh Won called to ask if they had any good recipes for dog.

Yeah, I should denounce myself, but that can wait till Monday.

It would be unusual for a person to suddenly plagiarize something as an adult, having never done anything of the sort before.

A careful examination of her published works is in order.

My gut feeling is the recipe for Elizabeth Warren is identical to the one for cold, stale, burnt toast.

BannedbytheGuardian | May 18, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Lewis & Clarke met an Indian girl who had met French Fur hunters . Maybe she got the omelette & crab recipes & they could have been telegraphed by smoke signals down to Oklahoma .

Imagine coming across a French speaking Indian young lady in the wild wild very wild west. It must have blown their minds.

Does Harvard have rules against plagiarism?

Well, most of Warren’s papers were before digital storage, so it depends on the specific institutions as to whether they created a digital archive of past theses and dissertations and articles, and in what form and how accessible it is.

But plagiarism was harder to check in those days, too, before the internet and search engines.

If it is even necessary at all. How does she have any credibility on anything after this? She’s been battered with it, and her reflex response to the hole she finds herself in is to try to dig her way out of it.

You have to be a truly committed blind-eye liberal to support her now. She’s no Kennedy. And even those guys never claimed to be anything beyond shanty Irish.
