Dick Lugar calls for help from Dems, Indies

Dick Lugar calls for help from Dems, Indies

This is sad, via IndyStar:

“Every person in Indiana who wants me to continue, every person wherever they might be at this point, I encourage them to come out,” he said. “Come out immediately, as fast as you can.” …

“I believe that right now if a majority of Hoosiers were to vote in an election, that is all Hoosiers regardless of party — Republicans, Democrats, independents, I would win,” Lugar said. “I want everybody in the state to vote for me on Tuesday. Everybody. I’m not asking anybody to cross over. I’m just saying positively ‘register your vote, because if you do not I may not be able to continue serving you. At this point, help.” …

Lugar, at his news conference, repeated his charge that Mourdock is not qualified to step in to the Senate and be an effective voice for Hoosiers, in part because of his inexperience and in part because of his refusal to work across the aisle.

Lugar could show he is the statesman he claims to be.  I don’t expect him to give up, but at this point he should stop his scorched earth attacks and he should stop humiliating himself.

Update: This is really bad, as reported by AP:

Lugar told reporters he is best suited to represent Jewish and female Hoosiers along with ethnic minorities.

As Dan Rowan would say,

“Goodnight, Dick … Lugar.”

    Um, no.

Dan Rowan said, “Say goodnight, Dick.”

Dick Martin would reply, “Goodnight, Dick!”

You young people need to pay more attention in History class – and keep off my lawn!

While I share your dismay at the scorched earth policy he’s employing, he is part of the establishment. We’ve seen what their policy is on scorched earth, and only need to see what they did to Newt to see how far they’re willing to go!

“Lugar told reporters he is best suited to represent Jewish and female Hoosiers along with ethnic minorities.”

Funny…Julia doesn’t look Jewish…or like she’s from fly-over country.

For those who did not fully understand the mindset of the Republican establishment after the Murkowski 2010 story, this is another wake-up call. We have seen and identified the enemy.

We’re the “minority group” that the GOP takes for granted, like the Dems take the Blacks and Latinos.

Time for us to leave the plantation and let them “hire” us like they had to do for the freed slaves after the Civil War.

“I want everybody in the state to vote for me on Tuesday. Everybody. I’m not asking anybody to cross over.

Obviously the second sentence there is a lie.

But it is also a subtle clarification. He’s saying “if it’s not clear, I don’t mean vote for me in the general, I mean CROSS OVER now. You don’t want the Republicans choosing their own nominee do you?”

MaggotAtBroadAndWall | May 4, 2012 at 2:44 pm

I had a thought similar to Rick’s @ 2:31.

I don’t know what the rules are for going the write in route in Indiana, but he sounds to me like he’s considering a write in campaign if he loses the Republican primary.

“I believe that right now if a majority of Hoosiers were to vote in an election, that is all Hoosiers regardless of party — Republicans, Democrats, independents, I would win,”

In Florida, we’d say the Ghost of Charlie Crist just possessed Dick Lugar to announce that you can pry “his” Senate seat from his cold, dead fingers.

If he loses the primary, which he will, he just telegraphed in a big way, IMO, that he wants to go rogue, either Dem or Independent (not sure what the state election rules are).

Go ahead, run as a Democrat, I say. It will expose Lugar once and for all for what he is. An unprincipled, over the hill politician that should retire.

For the life of me, why do their souls get so twisted and corrupt that despite a lifetime fat pension and healthcare benefits, despite being 80 years old, these guys can’t stand the fact that its time to stand down? Embarrasing, so embarrassing. Ah, human nature, its good, bad and ugly.

However, if it didn’t work for Crist, it won’t work for Lugar. Murkowski squeaked by, but in a smaller state where she had spread around more favors than Mr. Lugar.

I’m looking forward to helping Mourdock all the way to the finish line in November.

PS– BTW, did anyone read Noonan’s article in the WSJ endorsing Lugar? What the heck is she smoking?

Listkeeper | May 4, 2012 at 3:14 pm

Indiana has a ‘sore loser’ law. If you are defeated in a primary, you can not run in general election on another party’s ticket.

Lugar is done in politics 6:00PM May 8th.

Noonan, the conservative who voted for Obama, just can’t accept that her time has passed and we live in a different world now. She also can’t accept that Palin has more power to influence events than she has. Lugar is a POS, he is showing his desperation clearly for all to see.

“Lugar told reporters he is best suited to represent Jewish and female Hoosiers along with ethnic minorities.”

Jewish Hoosiers for Lugar!

Female Hoosiers for Lugar!

Ethnic Minorities for Lugar!

…more like…

Lugar for Lugar!

This Jewish female Hoosier is singularly unimpressed with Dick Lugar. Can’t wait to go to the polls next Tuesday!

I’ve been all over the state of Indiana the past 3 weeks. The only support I’ve encountered for Dick Lugar is from his paid hacks on Twitter.

Every flesh-and-blood Hoosier I’ve talked to will be voting Mourdock. They all have a specific grievance with Lugar. Mine is his votes for Sotomayor and Kagan, but also his anti-2nd amendment stance. I’m also not at all happy with the way his staff treated me or my wife when we called his office to voice our opinions over stimulas and ObamaCare.

People used to ask me how it was that conservative South Carolina kept electing Fritz Hollings after he veered left to pump his imaginary Presidential ambitions. Hollings (and Thurmond even more) was a master of constituent service.

There was almost no one in the state who hadn’t either been helped at some point by Hollings, or had a family member or close friend who had been. His staff was courteous, respectful, and concerned in their dealings with constituents. That builds a lot of personal loyalty that can overcome ideology for most people who aren’t political junkies like blog readers.

You can tell a great deal about a politician by how they lose, and if they can’t lose with dignity, then they probably aren’t serving with dignity.

It’s not sad to me. I laugh in his face. Deeply and derisively. You collude with Leftists, whether cluelessly or self-servingly, this is the fate you deserve. Maybe in his retirement he’ll read some history, study the Constitution, do some patriotic soul-searching, and offer his profoundest apologies to his constituents and the American people.

A true example of the liberal GOP-Establishment – bigger threat than the D’rat/Socialists because the GOPE is the enemy within.

A change has now occurred in the tenor of Lugar’s latest mailer. “Hoosiers are concerned about job growth . . . and . . . DICK LUGAR is standing up for Indiana.” He goes on to say that he is: fighting for development of the Keystone XL pipeline; did fight against job-killing regulations in Dodd-Frank (but he doesn’t tell the uninformed that it is Wall Street regulations in question); working to repeal and replace Obamacare (how that increases jobs is not explained); somehow stood strong by voting for Cap N’ Trade thus protecting coal miners jobs and for keeping energy rates stable (sorry I cannot explain this reasoning.)

The good news is that there is not one single attack against Richard Mourdock! Mourdock’s name does not appear in the ad.

Just in case you didn’t know, the Howey-Depauw poll taken Tuesday shows Mourdock up 43% to 35% with a whole bunch of undecided voters.

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned..But, I just can’t help thinking that a republican primary should consist of republicans voting for who they want to represent them. The same goes for a democrat primary.

Lugar trying to attract indies and dems is the same as what happened to Santorum, which is simply put, a desparate act of a weak candidate.

I heard that Lugar died several years ago and his staff props him up so they can draw a salary.
