Jennifer Rubin: Trump endorses egomaniac … Oops

Jennifer Rubin: Trump endorses egomaniac … Oops

Jennifer Rubin, the “right” blogger at The Washington Post and incessant Romney promoter, repeatedly has lashed out at Newt Gingrich with truly vile language unbecoming a writer at a major newspaper.

At 9:00 a.m. this morning, when Rubin thought Donald Trump would be endorsing Newt, here is what Rubin wrote in a post titled Egomaniacs R Us – Trump to pick Newt (emphasis mine):

Herman Cain, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Sarah Palin and now, it seems, Donald Trump have lined up behind Newt Gingrich. It’s convenient to have a candidate like Gingrich who attracts the unserious, the unpresidential, the uninformed and the unpalatable all in one convenient locale. It saves the time and effort needed to determine who is a credible Republican and who is not (Gingrich supporters)….

There is a weird commonality among Cain, Trump and Gingrich — an unseemly pattern of behavior with women. Perhaps that’s simply one manifestation of their egomania. And all of these pro-Newt characters share a penchant for extreme, nasty rhetoric with a disdain for productive governance. This is all about THEM and their PR machines….

Really, what’s next for Newt — a Duke Cunningham endorsement from a jail cell?

Rubin tweeted that Trump should climb out of the clown car along with Newt, Palin, Perry and Cain:

And that with the Trump endorsement, all the “loonies” would be on one side of the playing field:

Rubin even mocked the fact that Sharon Angle had endorsed Rick Santorum as evidence that all the “nutters” like Trump supported Newt:

But then the story changed, as details leaked out that Trump would be endorsing Romney.

The endorsement was not a fluke, it was the result of discussions at the highest levels of the Romney campaign, reports ABC:

Trump’s endorsement of Romney comes on the heels of multiple discussions between members of Romney’s team and Trump’s office over the past few months. These conversations took place at the highest levels of the Romney campaign apparatus, including campaign manager Matt Rhoades.

So what was Rubin to do?  Was Romney now a clown, unserious, unprincipled, uninformed and unpalatable?  Was Romney now an egomaniac?  No, his Boston campaign managers just made a bad decision, she wrote.

Yet before Rubin decided to throw Romney’s campaign team overboard in an effort to salvage her straight face, Rubin made sure to put in another demeaning shot at those in the conservative blogosphere who support Newt, in a post ironically titled How The Right Can Get Its Reputation Back:

Movement conservatives risk becoming the target of mockery, an irrelevant exercise that is more for laughs (at their own expense) than politically significant. Having tied themselves to Newt Gingrich they now can be painted, accurately enough, as cranks.

As they say on Twitter:  LMAO.

Need to check Rubin’s tweets to see how she spins Trump’s flip.

An article I’d like to see:

“How Jennifer Rubin and Ann Coulter can get their reputations back”

It would be a short article because the answer is that they won’t be able to get their reputations back.

Recipes for Rubin Series, #87:

Ms. Rubin,

1. Add mentaiko (spiced roe from southwest Japan) to pasta.

2. Cut up shiso leaves (peppery leaves often accompanying sushi) and sprinkle over mentaiko pasta.

3. Add crow to taste.

LukeHandCool (who knew a man in Kobe who pined for the delicacy of his Kirishima home in southern Japan … chicken sashimi … sliced raw chicken. Luke never tried it … but if he had, he’d have cheerfully asked for a heaping side of salmonella.)

“It saves the time and effort needed to determine who is a credible Republican and who is not (Gingrich supporters)”

“Credible”, huh…???

“Republican”…well, I can see that part. Like Conservatives really want to be “Republicans” at any cost.

But we know that Jenn has disqualified herself as a “credible Conservative”.

I don’t care who ya are, that’s funny right there

I know what you’re thinking, ’cause right now I’m thinking the same thing. Actually, I’ve been thinking it ever since the primaries started: Jennifer took the BLUE pill

Rubin takes hackery to a whole new level.

“Movement conservatives risk becoming the target of mockery, an irrelevant exercise that is more for laughs (at their own expense) than politically significant. Having tied themselves to Newt Gingrich they now can be painted, accurately enough, as cranks.”

You know, I’m not even that keen on Gingrich, but I do seem to remember that he was the guy who wrote up and then honored a “Contract with America” back in the 1990s. Romney never did anything comparable. But supporting Newt Gingrich is enough to mark you as a crank?

It’s stuff like this that bolsters my opinion that the GOP is long overdue for a breakup. If we don’t want to support these guys, and these guys think we’re cranks, then why are we together?

Midwest Rhino | February 2, 2012 at 4:20 pm

these pro-Newt characters share a penchant for extreme, nasty rhetoric with a disdain for productive governance

Big government is not a “producer” is it? Unless they’re counting the Chevy Volt. What does JRubin think government is producing?

Government takes some of the corn I produce, and they load requirements on how I produce it, and they tax me to hire union workers to build roads. But I only see government taking and requlating, not producing.

People like Jennifer Rubin are who I will point to as justification for sitting this election out. If she and a few others piss me off enough I might even go that extra mile of voting for Obama. I am teetering on that edge as I type this now. It wouldn’t take much bullshit from these clowns to push me all the way over.

holmes tuttle | February 2, 2012 at 4:21 pm

Seems to me these pro-Newt folks share a desire for effective governance. Seems to me like they looked at the field and said “who was the last guy to be in charge of the GOP when we had a balanced budget, no deficit, historically low spending, entitlement reform, historically low unemployment, record economic growth, record job growth, etc…”

and “who in the field governed a state that was 47 of 50 in job growth, 48 of 50 in GDP growth, set up the model for Obamacare(anyone not on Romney’s payroll or anyone who hasn’t endorsed him can tell you that), said he agreed with Roe v Wade and would preserve and protect the right to abortion, wasn’t even a Republican for a good period of his adult life, and has no contribution, history, or ties whatsoever to the conservative movement and conservative politics?”

You can hear the uh-oh’s coming from all over conservative intellectual we-know-best land. Poor Jim Geraghty (who I like a lot though disagreeing on more things than usual lately) at National Review did the same only with much milder snark this morning when he thought Trump was going to endorse Gingrich. From his Morning Jolt:

“They [Gingrich and Trump] really do seem to fit each other. . . . I guess the guy whose catchphrase is ‘you’re fired’ couldn’t go for the guy who said, ‘I like being able to fire people.'”

I guess Trump could. It seems Trump and Romney fit each other better than Trump and Gingrich.

Geraghty also quoted from Allahpundit:

“Can’t wait to hear Newt explain how excited he is to have the endorsement of a guy who ostentatiously left the partylast month.”

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/02/01/report-trump-to-endorse-gingrich-tomorrow-in-nevada/

Can’t wait, indeed. Especially since I just heard Gov. Romney saying he’s very pleased with Trump’s endorsement. Maybe Allahpundit can come up with the right words.

Isn’t Rubin just a typical example of what happens to people who accept a position as the house conservative in a liberal organization? Are there any good counterexamples? (hmm…maybe Buckley at PBS?)

Wait. Trump was going to endorse Newt until the highest levels of the Romney campaign persuaded Trump to endorse Romney?

So Trump was persuaded …. with what?

I’ve always wondered if Trump is a serious man or not. Guess not.

I’m sorry. I wanted Trump to get it. I wanted Trump to join us.

I guess it’s business as usual for Donald Trump.

Will Drudge now re-post the news that Trump gave money to Rahm Emanuel?

George Washington. Ronald Reagan. General Patton. Jimmy Doolitttle. Who are the others of courage? Help us, all of you who have gone before and done so much so that we might live in liberty. Help us to have the courage to carry Newt to the nomination and to the White House so that we can restore our country, that we love, to its Constitution.

Windy City Commentary in reply to Hope Change. | February 2, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Nope; instead Drudge now has a headline with a picture of Newt and under the picture it reads, “Your Fired!”.

You know, I used to think the MSM was bad, and I still do; but some of these “conservative” outlets like Drudge aren’t just bias, they are bias with a National Enquirer like feel to them. Ann Coulter isn’t going to have a friend in the world one of these days.

Say, if you do not intend to support the nominee of the Republican Party, doesn’t that in fact make you a RINO?

        Aitch748 in reply to Estragon. | February 2, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Maybe if you regard yourself as a Republican first and a conservative second, and you refuse to support a Republican, it might. (I’m looking at YOU, Karl Rove, for badmouthing the winner of the Republican primary in Delaware for three days straight after the primary was over.)

But what of those of us who consider ourselves conservatives first and vote Republican only so long as we can believe that the Republican candidates are conservative (or at least will act like conservatives while in office)? If we’re conservatives and are presented with the choice of two liberals, either of whom will make the federal overreach problem worse, many of us will decide not to vote for either of them.

“George Washington. Ronald Reagan. General Patton. Jimmy Doolitttle. Who are the others of courage?”

Reagan is one of my heroes, but I do not think he would consider himself courageous. Additionally, George Washington, General Patton, and Jimmy Doolitttle commanded armies in the field during wars.

I like Taranto’s observation on the endorsement: “Our favorite theory is that Trump favors Gingrich and figured the best way to help him would be by endorsing Romney.”

    McCoy2k in reply to clarice. | February 2, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Maybe that’s what the behind the scenes negotiations were all about. The Romney campaign were probably trying to buy off some of Trumps debt to have him endorse Gingrich.

This is a Wall Street guy supporting another Wall Street guy. Go figure. Just another arrow in Obama and the DNC’s quiver about paining Romney as a tool of Wall Street and the top of the top of the 1%.

      davod in reply to McCoy2k. | February 2, 2012 at 6:30 pm

“This is a Wall Street guy supporting another Wall Street guy.”

Another attack on capitalism. Five demerits.

        McCoy2k in reply to davod. | February 2, 2012 at 6:44 pm

OMGosh… I’m just telegraphing how Obama and his allies in the press will ultimately frame the Trump endorsement. As for Trump’s show, I CAN’T STAND Celebrity Apprentice. I like the original concept of The Apprentice, not as it is now.

        Darkstar58 in reply to davod. | February 2, 2012 at 7:13 pm

hehehe. Yeah, good call – but you didn’t do it right; way too little hysteria.

Next time maybe you can go with something along the lines of
“ahhhhhhh!!! Anti-Capitalist!!!!! Get him out of here!!!!11!!!!!1!YOU!!MUST1!!!SUPPORT!!!!MITT!!!ROMNEY!!111!!!!1!!!”

holmes tuttle | February 2, 2012 at 4:45 pm

It’s hard to believe but Romney and those backing him have actually caused me to begin to look forward to Obama beating him and sending him off the scene for once and for all.

I mean, if Newt wins the nomination, Romney would run again in 2016 and we’d have to deal with him for the next 4 years. Better to have him get it this time, lose, and then we won’t need to pay attention to him any longer.

Let Obama beat him, let Romney take the establishment and all his upporters down with him, and then conservatives can start fresh on Nov 7.

Uncle Samuel in reply to holmes tuttle. | February 2, 2012 at 5:16 pm

Guess that’s one way of looking at it…we would get rid of two birds with one big four year stone.

But can the nation survive a second Obama term?

Could we put in enough strong tea party conservatives (whatever that means)…to keep him in a choke collar?

So far, no one has effectually stopped the bleed-out of money and jobs.

This president is trying to get as many leftists and Islamists in jobs, and in permanent high places in the bureaucracy, military, intelligence and law enforcement as possible. Saturating it with his fellow ideologues – making the US a leftist/marxist Baba au Rhum.

Darkstar58 in reply to Uncle Samuel. | February 2, 2012 at 7:22 pm

But can the nation survive a second Obama term?

Based off his record as Governor, what makes you think electing Romney wont be as bad as another 4 years of Obama?

Besides, even Romneybots can only get to the point where they are painting Romney (in a best case) as Bush43 – how did that one work out for both the Country and Conservative Movement/Republican Party?

If we are going to have Obama Failed policies, or at best unprincipled Republicans doing their best “go along to get along” enforcement of Democrat ideas – well, why not let the Democrats get the blame for the path of destruction it leaves?

Romney has too much veneer to die.

The last endorsement that had any effect was Nixon endorsing the guilty verdict for Manson – just kidding, but not far off.

I was wrong about Trump. I was certain he was going to give a speech outlining the fiscal crisis and then endorsing . . . “The new season of Celebrity Apprentice, it’s gonna be HUGE!”

Means nothing, but got Trump another day in the headlines, which is like mother’s milk to him.

What’s so vile?

Trump had a lot of fun trying to keep everyone guessing – in order build it all up as much as possible.

There may be several reasons for Trump’s endorsement.

Mr. Trump is in direct business competition with Sheldon Adelson, who is a far-wealthier billionaire. It is Adelson’s Israeli-born wife, Miriam Adelson, MD, an addiction specialist, who gave the large donation to Newt Gingrich.

The Adelsons are very conservative Republicans and generous philanthropists. They have built addiction clinics in the US and Israel, built the US Holocaust memorial and have sponsored heritage tours of Israel for thousands of Jewish students.

The clinics are a result of Dr. Adelson’s research and work with opiate-addicted teens.

I’d love to see her on an advisory board in a Gingrich administration – because substance and behavior addictions are epidemic and have a devastating effect on society, families and the economy.

The more I watch events unfold, the more convinced I become that the Republican elite does not want to win the election, because, Heaven forbid, they might actually have to do something about the mess the country is in. Way to go RNC… snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

If/When Mitt Romney is crowned the Republican nominee, I predict that Jennifer Rubin’s article will have this title:

“Okay you stupid nutter clown imbecile idiot cranks: Time to rally around Mitt Romney. And if you don’t, then it proves you’re all just stupid nutter clown imbecile idiot cranks who are willing to re-elect Obama. Idiots.”

Apparently the GOP (losing) strategy in this election is to have their media surrogates call undecided conservatives names in order to win over their hearts and minds.

    McCoy2k in reply to MadCon. | February 2, 2012 at 5:23 pm

If Mitt is the Republican nominee, it won’t be worth a bucket of “spit”, aside from the fact that Romney will have spent millions upon millions of dollars buying it.

katiejane in reply to MadCon. | February 2, 2012 at 5:54 pm

It is an absolute given that the nasty attacks are going to fly toward people who don’t line up behind Mitt if he’s the nominee.
People keep pushing that meme but conservatives really need to understand that as long as they keep accepting moderates under the guise of “they appeal to the Independents” there will NEVER be a Conservative nominee.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall in reply to MadCon. | February 2, 2012 at 5:56 pm

You mean, being called a stupid nutter clown imbecile idiot crank doesn’t persuade you to vote for Willard? I’m not as smart as Willard and Rubin, but I guess they have some proven theory that says insulting and ridiculing those in your own party is the way to win elections.

Given how weak turnout in the primaries has been so far, Willard allowing his surrogates to continue to alienate the GOP base strikes me as very bizarre.

Good luck winning the general election when half the base that’s been constantly ridiculed and insulted decides to stay home, votes third party, or goes full out revenge and votes for Obama in November.

    Aitch748 in reply to MadCon. | February 2, 2012 at 8:20 pm

It’s going to be fun watching the Mitt supporters as it dawns on them that the old trick isn’t working — the GOP can’t just insist that the opposition is such a catastrophic horror that we basically HAVE to vote for whatever used-car salesman the GOP coughs up or the country is toast. I’ve heard the “this is the most important election in our lifetimes” used repeatedly over the years, going back at least as far as 1994 and doubtless before that.

You think they’re insulting us now? Just you wait. Hell, if they’re calling Newt “Contract with America” Gingrich an OWS leftist for bringing up Bain Capital’s unsavory aspects, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear them screaming at us to leave the country before the general election even starts.

She supported Kerry in 2004 – and obviously hasn’t changed much.

“Krauthammer On Romney’s “Poor” Answer: This is Bad, Romney Has No Fluency With Conservative Ideas

—Ace”

“To many conservatives, this is simply the wrong answer for a Republican to give. It’s Democrats who rely on a social safety net, they argue. Republicans who believe in pro-growth conservative policies like to say their ideas will help everyone and don’t divide based on class, much less rely on government programs.
“This is bad,” conservative columnist and commentator Charles Krauthammer said Wednesday night on Fox News Channel’s “Special Report.” “The real problem here is that he doesn’t have a fluency with conservative ideas. … The moral case for conservative economics is that our policies are going to help everybody, including the poor.”

It is a pity Krauthammer has taken this long to question Romney’s conservative bona fides.

Anyone who uses such juvenile and immature name calling is someone without a credible opinion. She made herself look irrational and unhinged. I don’t know how a person can get out of something like that. She stepped in it big time. And the Trump endorsement is NBD as far as I’m concerned. It just looks like more Wall Street support for Romney who Americans already do not connect with.

Message from Sarah’s brother Chuck (about the HOB hit piece on Sarah).

Hi guys (and gals),
I thought I’d share something with you that you might enjoy. A friend of mine in Alabama told me to check out the trailer for the new HBO show, Game Change. Now as I recall, that book was written about the race between McCain and Obama, but somehow, HBO decided to make it into a Sarah story. Anyway, I watched the trailer tonight with my two sons (eleven and eight years old). When the trailer gets to the end, the actress portraying Sarah says something like, “We have to win this thing; I so don’t want to go back to Alaska”. Both of my kids burst out laughing and the oldest said, “dad, that’s crazy! That doesn’t even sound like Sarah, and you know how much she loves Alaska”.

I know all of you Sarah supporters know that this movie is full of bull; just thought you might like to hear the perspectives of two of her nephews here in Alaska that know her just a little bit better than some Hollywood writer.

I hope we get to the point where referring or linking to anything by J Rubin is considered the same as feeding a troll.

Please let’s ignore her unless she makes a particular fool of herself as she’s done today with the premature ehackulation on Trump’s endorsement of, ahem, Gingrich.

Hah! Serves Rubin right for jumping the gun. A bit more knowledge about The Donald’s MO would have told her that the great man always plays games like this (leak conflicting stories to different outlets) with the media to pump up interest and coverage.

She was right the first time, however. Trump IS a “clown” — in the sense that he is not really serious about politics. He just seeks attention and understands that celebrity is a huge, money-making asset. Hovering around this year’s politics with its wide open race for the highest office in the land is for him an irresistable opportunity for self-promotion.

The most interesting thing about his endorsement is that everything Trump does and says is designed to make money for The Donald. So, he’s going with the obvious winner — and timing being everything, he’s doing it at a moment it is appreciated and before its value is diminished as Romney wraps it up.

Trump now owns some chits from the guy who is at least 50 percent likely to be President next year.

Dear doG, how did this woman rise to such a position at the WaPo? Not only is she incapable of composing a grammatically correct sentence, the concept of logical thought totally escapes her. Are you sure these columns aren’t actually being written by a hundred monkeys sitting at typewriters?

Rubin doesn’t even begin to rise to the level of clown. She’s the slightly dirty, overly made-up tart in the booth outside the girly show shilling for her sisters (and brothers) inside. She’ll tell ya’ anything she thinks will get you excited about what’s going on inside. That she has no clue herself is irrelevant. Her stories will have you trembling with anticipation but when the “beautiful young virgin” inside turns out to be her brother in drag it will be your fault for misunderstanding what she said.

But yes, I got a chuckle out of this one, Professor. Well worth waiting for and very nicely played.

Perfect post. The only thing I’d add is a “Karma” tag.

One of the terrible consequences of the scorched-earth deluge of money, 65 negative ads against Newt to one ad for Newt, coming in second in Florida, and the constant barrage of Romney Romney Romney from PEOPLE I THOUGHT WERE MY ALLIES, is — look what we’re talking about.

As was pointed out yesterday, Reagan lost 6 or 7 of the early primaries in 1976 and was under extreme pressure from the Establishment to drop out. Do you remember how they talked about Reagan? It’s only since Reagan isn’t with us anymore that the sons of unprintable unprintables have started talking like they always respected Reagan. Not so.

They tried to destroy Reagan. JUST LIKE THEY ARE TRYING TO DESTROY NEWT.

Then, according what I read yesterday, things picked up in 1976 and Reagan was very strong going into the convention, where the Rockefeller Establishment Republicans gave the nomination to Gerald Ford (a moderate) with 115 votes. Then Gerald Ford lost to Jimmy Carter.

If we support Newt, it’s not because Newt is so perfect, or doing everything right. We support Newt because Newt is able to provide leadership for the American people to claim our birthright again of self-government.

That’s why I mentioned George Washington, Jimmy Doolittle, General Patton, Ronald Reagan. Let’s add Abraham Lincoln.

These man gave all they had in one way and another so that we might live in LIBERTY.

The meaning of America is that the little guy has a chance to make of his life what he can. Opportunity. Not political patronage. Not in thrall to the money-boys and the politicians.

The current administration is trying to change that. The Left has been trying to whittle away our rights for decades. Probably, arguably, for more than one hundred years.

I support Newt because I have been waiting since Reagan for someone who understands the meaning of a country in which the little guy is the most important one sometimes. Where we do not bow to kings. Where everyone is sovereign and has the dignity that is natural to a sovereign being. Where we are considered equal before the law. Where we would scorn to use public office to “punish our enemies and reward our friends.” Newt understand this, Newt teaches this, Newt has lived this.

Tom Bethell wrote the brilliant, live-changing (for me, at least) book, “The Noblest Triumph,” about the importance of secure and fair private property rights in creating prosperity. Bethell makes the point that Mexico has harbors, natural resources, people — many of the things that create prosperity. What they lack as compared to the United States, at least in part, is a strong tradition of civic duty. A city clerk in my town wouldn’t DREAM of accepting a bribe. Corruption and self-help violence make Mexico a low-trust, high danger society, not a comparatively attractive place to do business. No offense to Mexico, that is also true many other places, including some cities in the U.S.

The ugliness of crony capitalism is that the money-boys and the politicians are all getting rich at the expense of the tax payer, the hapless victim.

So this is like a war. We need a General Patton. We need someone smart, experienced, unshakeable. Just absolutely unshakeable. Tried by fire already. Newt doesn’t want to do this alone; in fact Newt says clearly that he can’t do this alone.

This is a task that only the American people can accomplish. The scale of the change is so big that only the American people have enough power to overcome the Establishment’s resistance.

I know I am repeating this a lot. I hope you will forgive me if it is annoying. I’m going to offer you the links to the speeches again.

Because what Newt is proposing is so big that it will only happen if the American People team up. Only the people have the power. So the greatest number of people need to understand what Newt is proposing.

I hope you will watch or listen to Newt, in his own words, no game-show version of apolitical debate, describing his vision for our future. It is EXCITING. WE CAN DO IT.

The more people who understand the thrilling future we could have, the more people who will team up to make it happen. Also, the more people who think about the tremendous sacrifices of those who have made it possible for us to live in freedom, the more all of us will realize that this is like a war. We could lose out liberties from inside the country. Your children will never know what they have lost, if this happens. This is very motivating if you allow yourself to stop and think about it.

There is suffering in this process and most of us would rather avoid that. Me, too.

But Newt is out there every day, for us, for our future.

I want to help Newt in every way I can, to be the nominee. Because if Newt is the nominee, Newt will win. Remember “HOOSIERS”? Newt is playing a game the Left will not be able to win. The same as the team in “HOOSIERS.” The Left will use their usual methods, but it won’t work. Because Newt’s team is all Americans.

Please take some time and listen to these speeches. This is the chance of a lifetime.
