Boehner: Immigration Reform Won’t Be Part of Border Bill

Senator Reid plans to tack immigration reform to the House’s border bill, but Speaker Boehner and a contingent of GOP Senators are already pushing back.

Yesterday, Speaker John Boehner indicated the House Republicans will push back against any attempt to hijack their border bill.

The bill would allocate $659 million to border authorities, far less than the almost $4 billion President Obama requested.

Boehner released the following statement (emphasis added):

“Senator Reid, embarrassed that he cannot strong-arm the Senate into passing the blank check President Obama demanded, is making a deceitful and cynical attempt to derail the House’s common-sense solution.

So let me be as clear as I can be with Senator Reid: the House of Representatives will not take up the Senate immigration reform bill or accept it back from the Senate in any fashion. Nor will we accept any attempt to add any other comprehensive immigration reform bill or anything like it, including the DREAM Act, to the House’s targeted legislation, which is meant to fix the actual problems causing the border crisis.

Such measures have no place in the effort to solve this crisis, and any attempt to exploit this crisis by adding such measures will run into a brick wall in the People’s House.

“While the White House has abandoned all pretense of governing and the Senate is doing almost nothing to address our struggling economy, Republicans remain committed to addressing the American people’s priorities, and that includes passing a responsible bill this week to help secure our border and return these children safely to their home countries.”

Boehner’s statement was in direct response to Senator Reid’s statement indicating the the GOP’s border bill could be used as an opportunity to push the ever-ambiguous “immigration reform.” The Hill reports:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday that if the House passes a $659 million border bill with policy changes, he could use it as a vehicle for comprehensive immigration reform.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is trying to round up enough votes for a pared-down border bill that spends far below the president’s request for $3.7 billion and includes policy changes to speed the deportation of illegal minors from Central America.

Reid said the policy changes would give him an opportunity to attach the comprehensive immigration reform bill that the Senate passed last year with the support of 14 Republicans.

“If they pass that, maybe it’s an opening for us to have a conference on our comprehensive immigration reform. If they’re finally sending us something on immigration, maybe we can do that,” Reid told reporters after a lunch meeting with his caucus.

“We’ve been looking for something to do a conference on. Maybe we can do it with that,” Reid said.

Thankfully, House Leadership is digging in to ensure no unnecessary concessions are made at the expense of securing the southern border. It’s almost like they’ve been reading us here at Legal Insurrection:

“More advantageous would be a scenario where securing the border is a wholly separate discussion, not tethered to any reform preference du jour, but simply — secure the border. Regardless of where one falls politically, most will agree this is one of the primary reasons, if not the reason the federal government exists. Having this discussion on its own merits will likely produce more successful results in terms of actually securing the border and leave us free to have the immigration discussion we wanted to have, having traded nothing to start the conversation.

Let the immigration debate be the immigration debate and in the mean time, force the federal government to fulfill its sole obligation by securing our borders.”

The House isn’t alone in wanting to keep the border and immigration reform issues separate though. Senator’s McCain, Graham, Rubio, and Flake have all pitched their support behind Speaker Boehner’s effort to deal with the humanitarian crisis at the border first.

I’m trying to decide this morning whether I trust the Speaker’s promise, or whether I should call my Congressman to insist on “No New Laws” until we have control of the Senate.

Never trust Boehner(or any politician) and definitely call your congress critter. The more who call, write, or email the better. Doesn’t mean they’ll listen, but, still better.

remember the sequester? The one they where going to fight for after funding obamacare? the one they ditched after they funded obamacare and promised to fight for?

Ok, why would you trust proven snake-oil salesmen?

These guys are not statesmen–they make used-car salesmen look ethical.

My first thought too. Let’s see that Boehner is not just blowing more hot air.

IF there is any double-cross here by the eGOP, it is time to take it to the streets…peacefully, of course. It can still be very ugly.

    IOW – Time for …. a LEGAL INSURRECTION !!!!!

walls in reply to pjm. | July 30, 2014 at 9:18 am

Maybe not so legal. Both sides are intransigent and digging in. Do we surrender our sovereignty, language, and culture – or fight? Maybe the solution is some kind of split up, or CWII – I don’t know. But what is going on is unacceptable and has been for eons. I wish I could resurrect Eisenhower.

Most people are too stupid and don’t have long term vision to comprehend what this all means.

pjm in reply to walls. | July 30, 2014 at 10:01 am

“Do we surrender our sovereignty, language, and culture – or fight?”

And ‘who decides that ?’. On paper – you and I and every other citizen. In reality – Walmart. And every other big corporation. And the special interest groups.

We have the very best politicians money can buy. Literally. On both ‘sides’ (which have really become ‘one side’ over the decades, they just have different accents).

We are now a nation run by gays, LGBT’s, hispanics, etc.

This 60’s style radical from Kenya, Obama, happens to be the highly visible ‘point of the spear’ today. He will continue to do more damage for 2.5 more years.

He told us right out front from day one, his goal is ‘to radically transform America’. He was telling us the truth. Now he is doing it. Right out in the open, in front of everyone’s faces.

Please don’t tell me about ‘impeachment’ – ain’t gonna happen. Don’t drop hints about ‘revolution’ – ain’t gonna be one. Get real.

The best thing about it, from this old man’s point of view, is that A) I have no kids to worry about what they’re going to inherit, and B) It’s going to be a long slow process of degradation (of us as a nation), and I’ll be dead before it gets as far as it will in the future.

Don’t forget that we have a very powerful weapon even our Revolutionary Founders did not have.

Civil disobedience works every time it is tried and supported adequately. Think “Prohibition”. We are not powerless.

      No it doesn’t.

We get that mis-impression because only the successful ones make the papers and the history books. For every one ‘Rosa Parks’, or ‘Prohibition finally being gone after 14 years’, of whatever famous examples you care to choose, there are thousands, nay, hundreds of thousands, of efforts that failed.

You can tell school kids ‘Hey, in this country you can grow up to be Peyton Manning, or Lebron James, or President’ ! And you would not be lying, in concept.

And you might also win the next PowerBall for $ 300 million dollars, too. What the hell, SOMEONE probably will !

Yeh, and a few hundred million people that put their money in won’t.

Ragspierre in reply to pjm. | July 30, 2014 at 10:37 am

        Name ONE.

Your example has to be popularly supported to have any verity.

JimMtnViewCaUSA in reply to Ragspierre. | July 30, 2014 at 11:06 am

Agree with pjm. Civil Disobedience only works when the authorities are somewhat ethical.
If Gandhi had been born in Russia, he would be a small blood stain on an anonymous scrap of concrete. Not a household name.

Check out a few of the anti-Soviet rebellions in Eastern Europe. The tanks rolled in, the rebellions were crushed and years had to pass before the cause could make any progress. Even when a new pro-democracy leader had been elected with near-universal support.

Sure, C/D works EVERY time that it is supported ADEQUATELY…but that is a somewhat circular definition. Heck, you don’t need C/D, just get the minority of Americans to vote for Repubs who aren’t RINOs. Lower bar to reach, no?

I’m pretty sure I don’t ‘have to’ prove ANYTHING to you.

          That don’t make you right.

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | July 30, 2014 at 11:44 am

          Wul. Duh.

Are you suggesting we are USSR or Imperial Japan depraved?

If you are, you need to justify that.

          Asshole.

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | July 30, 2014 at 3:22 pm

          Is that you, Ms. Lerner…???

Don’t you have some emails to destroy?

It scares the hell out of me to hear Reid use the swords ‘We can go to conference’.

The last time he used that slimy trick the result was the ACA, and the Federal takeover of student loans.

Ted Cruz, Jeff Sessions, Marsha Blackburn, Tea Party Patriots, Michele Bachmann are all urging citizens to call EN MASSE today to defeat the Boehner Granger bill. The bill does not stop Obama’s DACA, it doesn’t stop Obama from more executive actions to grant amnesty as he is threatening to do again, and it doesn’t secure the border. Basically, it gives Obama more money to process illegals, even though the administration says only $25 million will be used this year.

Michelle Bachmann, R-Minnesota, said last night on a NumbersUSA.com conference call that the best approach isn’t to impeach Obama because the votes aren’t in the Senate and it would just cause problems in the November election. (I’m paraphrasing.) The better thing to do is to impeach any high-level officer who implements amnesty, such as the head of HHS or … I can’t remember the other example she gave.

She also acutely pointed out that the current crop of reps were not in the House when the 2007 deluge of citizen outrage stopped McCain’s amnesty bill. She said we need another deluge to stop what is happening now, to make the current elected representatives aware of the depth and breadth of opposition to amnesty.

The vote is Thursday morning. Today, we need to call our representative, and call again. The Senate is not the issue today or tomorrow.

Tell them you want them to vote against the Granger bill (from Boehner’s committee on the border situation) on Thursday morning. It doesn’t stop more executive amnesties and it doesn’t solve the problem. It’s a fig leaf; we need a bill to stop more amnesties, which Marsha Blackburn’s bill and Ted Cruz’s bill would do. Their bill specifically refuses any money to the administration to process illegal alien executive amnesties.

Here is the cut and paste from NumbersUSA.com website:

Call Congress at 855-827-2353 and urge them to oppose the emergency supplemental for the border crisis because it doesn’t stop Pres. Obama’s amnesties.

JimMtnViewCaUSA | July 30, 2014 at 11:11 am

“deal with the humanitarian crisis at the border first”

Then screw America and Americans later. I just don’t trust these guys on immigration. How have they let the Dems push them so far?

Take note, this is really getting painful Today? illegal aliens—YES! Illegal aliens are flaunting their undocumented status, demonstrating outside the White House and ICE was there doing and saying nothing? These people were demanding Amnesty and financial benefits from the American people. DEMANDING! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR LAWS? Grand Standing with signs who they are; that they are not suppose to even be in the United States and uniformed Park Police and immigration services telling them to move along. That the ICE authorities not detaining into custody these people and taking them away?

The majority of Americans are uptight as strained piano wire about what Obama has threatened to do, if like a little child he doesn’t get his way. Is he going to open the gates wide to illegal immigrants as that nut case California Gov. Brown wants to provide?

WHERE ARE THE ERUPTING VOICES OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE? Can you help Save America? Obama continues to overstep his boundaries. He holds utter disregard for our nation, our Constitution, our own people. Every chance he gets he tramples our rights in the name of being “king” of the land. He has violated the separation of powers and repeatedly put himself above the law.

OBAMA INVITING ‘INVASION OF MURDERERS, GANG MEMBERS’
Border Patrol: U.S. accepting them because crimes not done in U.S. from http://www.wnd.com

McALLEN, Texas – As the Obama administration struggles to define the current wave of unaccompanied minors as a tale of refugees escaping violence, government border officials are telling a frighteningly different story of the infiltration of criminal gang members and confessed murderers along with thousands of potential recruits.
Some 70 percent of the youths – boys and girls alike – have been raped or otherwise sexually assaulted on their dangerous trip north to the Rio Grande, according to officials.
Chris Cabrera, a Border Patrol agent for nearly 13 years and a vice president in the National Border Patrol Council Local 3307, spoke to WND and Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, in an exclusive interview at the Rio Grande border in McAllen, Texas, Saturday.
WND asked Cabrera what the Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security do when they find out an illegal immigrant teenager from Central America is a gang member or a murderer.
“What do we do?” he answered. “Well, they haven’t committed a crime in the United States, so they’re good to go, and we send them north, even if they admit they have committed a murder.”

The situation with the illegal alien’s invaders is out of control. What I see coming as a result alarming me beyond anything I’ve ever known in my 52 years.

The US Border Patrol are telling us that the illegal aliens, including the children, are crossing the border claiming, “Obama will take care of us” as if it has been carefully rehearsed—taught before they even cross the border into the U.S from Mexico.

They are immediately asking about their schooling and medical care. Someway they are coming prepared with names of family members that live here which get them a ticket into our country.

Clearly, someone carefully orchestrated it and it makes me sick.

Half of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. A smaller majority don’t want to work and prefer to leech the financial blood from those who are out there, trying to feed there families. A GREATER MAJORITY ARE THE AMERICANS AND ILLEGAL OR LEGAL IMMIGRANTS WHO WILL VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS, AS THE ARE SPENDING AS THE DEMENTED? Millions are still out of a job; many still looking. Obamacare has turned out to be a pretense—it’s outrageously expensive and unaffordable. Poverty and welfare are at an all-time high. Veteran’s benefits are in danger of being cut. Yet Obama wants to allow 30 million illegals to suck at the federal, state treasuries. It’s all about votes for a dangerous man who wants a third term. Obama is the worst president in the history of the United States—and the most lethal. He has proven his loyalty to terrorists and illegals, demonstrated utter disdain for America and complete disrespect for our military. Help us alert America and rally support to remove Obama from office.

Its unconstitutional and a humiliation with deadly consequences. Demand Congress stops the death sentence. Check this site that has the phone Numbers and Mailing Addresses of Members of Congress at: http://www.contactingthecongress/ to demand an end to illegal immigration and the dismantling of our military, which is our lifeblood against our enemies. This is the number for the central switchboard for Congress to address your grievances at 800—224-3121.

We must Block amnesty for illegal aliens, which is entirely up to us—grassroots America—the little helpless citizens.
