Both are staples of the Democratic Party’s political appeal to the masses. What else can they use to convince people to vote for them? Fifty two per cent of Dems still don’t know the earth revolves around the sun, 82 per cent of NYC high school grads can’t read or write upon graduation. The minute America strayed from Thomas Jefferson’s concept of the ideal American citizen, the farmer who read Homer in the original Greek at night, we began our descent into our state of chaos and confusion. Anyone remember Rachel Jeantell? She likely has since graduated and gained the right to vote, joining the ranks of those 175,000 registered voters of Florida’s St Lucie county who cast 250,000 ballots against Col Allen West.
Here is my modest proposal…
The idea is perfect. One problem, though, is that unless it’s cash, it can’t end up back in the hands of the politicians who “give” it.

I posted this link and comment in updates over at my post on Cotes’ reparations article: AoSHQ: “The Power of Whiteness:” Touré’s Glib Dismissal of a Descendant of a Holocaust Survivor Raises Eyebrows This reminds me of The Sopranos episode where every character was narcissistically focused on their own historical persecution. That episode is generally hated by most fans, but this little speech by Tony at the end is awesome. The Sopranos visited the issue of victim-hood in other episodes previous to this (this theme definitely plays into the creepy little weirdo’s shooting in California).
Sadly, Thomas Jefferson, a brilliant man, was sufficiently lacking in faith that he came to advocate compulsory schooling. He was afraid future generations would fail to appreciate the value of the Constitution otherwise.
Fortunately, he did not live to see his dream of compulsory schooling fulfilled. Unfortunately, Horace Mann did the dirty work for him, creating the “Common School” on which our government bureaucracy public school system is based.
How’s that working out for the Constitution?

A lot of Mann’s early impulses were very good. We could quibble about his six main principles, but I think generally the impulse behind them was good.
Where he made a serious wrong turn was in his love affair with the Prussian Model of eduction. In that sense, he was a pre-Progressive.
But we often complain about LIV, and how they have tended to screw things up. Jefferson and Mann both wanted a people, and expected a people, informed and fully enabled to govern themselves, which both saw as their right.
The Progressive Era thinkers considered that a hopeless fantasy, and they seem to have…with their progeny…worked to make it true. Education for the masses came to be corrupted to provide just good lil’ worker bees for the hive. Capable of serving industry, but only just barely, and certainly not educated to be the noble yeoman of Jefferson’s or Mann’s better visions.

Are you sure that made him a pre-Progressive? The Progressive movement was heavily into organizing society like the military. See, for instance, the Progressive utopian fantasy novel Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy, in which a sleeper awakes in a future America in which all parts of life are run by the state along militarized lines.

Me too. I was a Junior High School classmate of Al Sharpton (in Brooklyn, NY) my senior year (1967 -68) and I and other white kids were shaken down and terrorized several times a week by Black kids. My white guilt died after that.

Surely it’s not all skin color. I don’t keep the info in front of me because it’s not my obsession, but quite often dark-skinned immigrants from far-flung countries go further than most home-grown African-Americans. If you want to blame slavery, great. Though, I’m sure non-blacks have been enslaved in places too. (That doesn’t make it a good thing, either.) Comparisons might not work out so well.
Since surviving the concentration camps, emigrating, and making a success of life, though starting with nothing, is white privilege what does Touré have to say about Booker T. Washington?

Collective and inherited sin are illegitimate doctrines of a degenerate religion. As for reparations, two words: Great Society. It could have worked, but the Democrats, represented by people like Coates and Toure, are fundamentally corrupt.
Democrats, including Coates and Toure, need to recognize individual dignity and intrinsic value. Their positions create moral hazards, which they are either unwilling or incapable of reconciling.

It is high time to stop compulsory education. What parents don’t want their children educated? Compulsory education is the state telling parents what to do with their children for the good of the state.
Socialist have taken over academia in this country. In the late 1800s Bismarck had the socialist thrown out of what was becoming Germany and many came to America and settled into academia. John Dewey had socialist leanings. Horace Mann gave us the Common School after visiting Prussia during summer vacation. Now our children are being indoctrinated on a wide variety of issues and children of parents who don’t give a shit are wasting their time and others time taking up space. (and breathing the oxygen in the room.) The money we have pored into schools in the last few decades haven’t improved over all achievement or the achievement in low-performing schools.
Let us decriminalize school truancy.

I actually read Ta-Nehisi Coates piece and I want to point out something: he’s not explicitly calling for reparations but writing on support of a congressional commission to study not only slavery, but segregation, redlining and a number of discriminatory practices that affected
African Americans. It is actually well written and lacking any of the usual talking points leftist use; given that much of the damage inflicted on blacks was at the hands of democratic politicians and the big-government institutions that they support, I’m really wondering if they are honestly willing to study this seriously and assign the blame where it really belongs.

All my little gray cells (all of us have the same colored brain) tell me that Coates is trying to be cute with his piece, and that…sure as there are carts to horses…any such commission would be the precursor to a call for reparations.
You can see that plainly from his supporter’s emphasis, I think.
I do not take issue with Coates historical narrative. What he writes about is documented and accurate (and morally wrong).
Surely you know that such a congressional commission is only a prelude to calls for government action. Any claim that it is merely fact-finding is laughably false. And besides, who needs another “investigation”? The facts are there. Any “fact-finding” is merely an attempt to soften up opposition to future “redistribution” of wealth.
