Triumphalism was his undoing

Triumphalism was his undoing

As the sham sales pitch and flummoxed policy behind Obamacare are exposed the attempts to portray opposition as a reaction to Obama’s race are ramping up with renewed vigor.

Yet the evidence is becoming more clear that it is not race that is the problem, it’s Obama.

Fouad Adjami has a perceptive column (h/t Hot Air), When the Obama Magic Died:

A nemesis awaited the promise of this new presidency: Mr. Obama would turn out to be among the most polarizing of American leaders. No, it wasn’t his race, as Harry Reid would contend, that stirred up the opposition to him. It was his exalted views of himself, and his mission. The sharp lines were sharp between those who raised his banners and those who objected to his policies.

America holds presidential elections, we know. But Mr. Obama took his victory as a plebiscite on his reading of the American social contract. A president who constantly reminded his critics that he had won at the ballot box was bound to deepen the opposition of his critics.

A leader who set out to remake the health-care system in the country, a sixth of the national economy, on a razor-thin majority with no support whatsoever from the opposition party, misunderstood the nature of democratic politics. An election victory is the beginning of things, not the culmination.

It started long before Obamacare.  It started at the earliest point in Obama’s presidency, the Stimulus.

Every president lacks legitimacy in the eyes of those who voted against him. The myth that the Supreme Court stole the election for Bush was a fundamental part of Democratic opposition.

Yet even presidents who are viewed by part of the electorate as illegitimate normally view their role as being president of all the people.

It never was that way with Obama. He won. He let us know it. And he and his supporters ruled as if those who opposed him were illegitimate.

Could it have been any different? I doubt it, given the man. I wrote on October 19, 2008:

Barack Obama also is the deep thinker who ponders great things. And the thing that Barack Obama seems to ponder most is his own greatness. He doesn’t write biographies, he writes only autobiographies. He gives speeches which he declares to be historic. He recognizes his place in history long before he has created history. This nation is but a stage upon which Barack Obama creates his life story, and it’s all about him.

Adjami writes in the link above:

If Barack Obama seems like a man alone, with nervous Democrats up for re-election next year running for cover, and away from him, this was the world he made. No advisers of stature can question his policies; the price of access in the Obama court is quiescence before the leader’s will. The imperial presidency is in full bloom.

There are no stars in the Obama cabinet today, men and women of independent stature and outlook. It was after a walk on the White House grounds with his chief of staff, Denis McDonough, that Mr. Obama called off the attacks on the Syrian regime that he had threatened. If he had taken that walk with Henry Kissinger or George Shultz, one of those skilled statesmen might have explained to him the consequences of so abject a retreat. But Mr. Obama needs no sage advice, he rules through political handlers.

Valerie Jarrett, the president’s most trusted, probably most powerful, aide, once said in admiration that Mr. Obama has been bored his whole life. The implication was that he is above things, a man alone, and anointed. Perhaps this moment—a presidency coming apart, the incompetent social engineering of an entire health-care system—will now claim Mr. Obama’s attention.

The result is what we are seeing today. An abysmally failed policy severely damaging 1/6 of the economy, treating tens of millions of people as mere rounding errors to be disregarded, and a continued demonization of all opposition.

Dunno. If there were an emergency election within 3 months he would not only win but with increased majority.

Love conquers all .

Besides all the lies they told right up to the time they canceled all the individual policies in order to herd everyone onto ObamaCare, don’t even think they weren’t planning vicious attacks any American, sick or well, whose voice wasn’t drown out by their noise machine and who managed to get a call for help out to the rest of us.

Oh well. One cancellation is a tragedy, a million cancellations is a statistic.

The videos Ragspierre has put in the Tipline (at patterico) are must-sees.

I am stunned at how cavalierly the BHO admin is taking this disastrous Obamacare rollout. I have co-workers that have never uttered a political word in 10 years, but they are scared and confused about Obamacare. They include a young healthy person who foregoes buying health insurance, a Tri-Care recipient, and a Medicare Advantage participant. The admin needs to wake the hell up. My feelings won’t be hurt if this hurts the left politically, but this is hurting real people that don’t live in the cocoon of the DC establishment.

Being a Democrat is never having to say you are sorry (they never do, they are so smugly assured that they are right, they just assume that dark forces are at play when their failed policies fail to materialize, work, or happen as predicted). That is why it will take until the glaciers grind over the top third of the country for them to abandon global warming. Even then, they will blame it on global warming.

Yes, and so many “smart” folks fell for the schtick, and scorn those that did not.

legacyrepublican | November 17, 2013 at 11:39 pm

Yes, there is racism.

When a president who is half white calls himself black, says he is proud to be black, and strictly labels himself as only African american, there is racism.

That’s why I keep saying he’s a mulatto so he won’t get away with clinging to the “one drop” rule to lie to people.

legacyrepublican in reply to Juba Doobai!. | November 18, 2013 at 9:34 am

Juba Doobai, I would prefer that you say “multi-racial” instead of “mulato.” Not because you aren’t right, which you are, but because the left will hear a buzz word from the south that they will latch onto as being racist and ignore your very salient observation.

A president quicker to say “African-american” when he is “multi-racial” is as racist as any KKK member if not more so.

Juba Doobai! in reply to legacyrepublican. | November 18, 2013 at 9:15 pm

You have a point; even if I eschew ‘mulatto’, I can only say ‘biracial’ because that’s what he is–black and white, not ‘multiracial’.

And here I thought Choom’s paternal side was mostly Arabic. God help us when the LIVs buy into a media pushing that fake Injun with a vagina on us or revise history for fellow geezer and fraud sHrillary. Can you imagine the uproar or results had man/bear/pig/AGW blowhard or Lurch been deemed black? I want to puke every time some informed dipwad with a social media moniker such as obamamama tells me how historic it was and how proud they are to help elect the greatest POTUS/god of all time. People actually believe the Huffington Post type Obama agitprop. No idea how DU or LGF are defending the magic negro now.

The seeds of Obama’s narcissism were planted long ago, probably even before a self-described lackluster student at Occidental College was able to transfer to Columbia as a third-year student, the sort of thing that’s not automatic even if you were a star at Oxy. Then to Harvard Law – if all the transcripts were good, why not release them? Bush, Gore, and Kerry all turned out to be C+ students as undergrads, McCain was at the bottom of his class at Annapolis, so the bar wasn’t set so high.

Then he continued to be handed freebies – publishing deals for autobiography by a young man who never did anything worth writing about? TWICE? A big job with Annenberg Challenge and a multi-million dollar bequest to waste. Part-time employment as a Con Law lecturer for 14 years, never publishing a single article in journals. Illinois State Senator, backbencher who votes “Present” 131 times, yet whose name appears on bills he had nothing to do with to burnish his credentials for Senate.

Then the US Senate race, when both his main opponents fall to leaks from sealed divorce records, and he gets to run against Alan Keyes, who isn’t even from the state.

Then after setting the record for worst attendance ever for four years in the Senate, he beats the heir apparent for the Democratic nomination by simply organizing in the “red” states she ignores and cleaning up on those free delegates, and draws an old white Senator noted for his pro-war stance at the height of antiwar sentiment, also with no executive experience so his greatest weakness can’t be attacked.

After one of the worst first terms in a century, he is reelected by running a relentlessly false and negative campaign.

No wonder he feels charmed. It’s all been handed to him, always, with no effort but with people falling all over him telling him how great he is (mainly because he won’t let anyone who doesn’t get too much access).

This was always in the cards, as many suspected. It was just supposed to come up and stop him before now!

He was elected president but Obama often acts like he is the mayor of the one party city of Chicago with his disdain for the opposition and his assumption of powers not granted to him by the Constitution. (On paper, Chicago is a weak mayor system.)

Do what we say, not what we do. The administration has been running a multi-level campaign against bullying and other predatory tactics. Perhaps their behavior is evidence of the left brain not knowing what the left hand is doing. If that’s the case, then the administration should be declared inviable and aborted in order to save the life of the federal government.

Just imagine the mindset of the morons who actually believe that race is a factor in peoples’ rage against Obamacare.

Well, we don’t have to imagine, we can just look at every single sick person in the Obama administration, at the head of every college classroom, at the head of every union, and at the head of every media network.

I’m sure there are a few truly brainwashed altruists who believe the racism approach, but I have serious doubts that the rest of the left actually believes that and isn’t just using it because it’s worked so well for so long as a means of silencing conservatives.

Ironically, racial prejudice is not an issue until it is made the issue. The vast majority of people simply do not obsess over such a trivial thing.

One word: Narcissism!

I would just add to the comments here, that the comments here are spot on:

Narcissism, Arrogance, Indifference to one’s own failings, Refusal to enact actual compromise on policy. All of these are coming to a head with the failed implementation of the PPACA (Obamacare).

The worst part of it, they have no one to blame but themselves this time. They own it ALL.

His basic problem lies in the fact that he is not and never has been a gentleman.

JackRussellTerrierist in reply to teapartydoc. | November 18, 2013 at 3:05 pm

Lefties and commies are never gentlemen. They are unpolished, uncivilized oafs who gleefully insult, corrupt and swindle anyone they can.

Juba Doobai! in reply to teapartydoc. | November 18, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Indeed, the crassness of his heckling comments, his obscene middle finger, lipstick on a pig, and shoulder brushing insults showed this to be true. However, his supporters thought these charming and cheered him on thus making him think he could be as vilely thuggish as he wanted to be. So he was. Now his come-uppance.

“Every president lacks legitimacy in the eyes of those who voted against him. The myth that the Supreme Court stole the election for Bush was a fundamental part of Democratic opposition.”

This line struck me like a bolt of lightning. Is it feasible that the reaction to Bush v Gore weighed on John Roberts thinking in the O’care decision? Could he possibly have thought Dems were owed one?

It’s a tragedy in the classical sense:

Tragedy depicts the downfall of a noble hero or heroine, usually through some combination of hubris, fate, and the will of the gods. The tragic hero’s powerful wish to achieve some goal inevitably encounters limits, usually those of human frailty (flaws in reason, hubris, society), the gods (through oracles, prophets, fate), or nature. Aristotle says that the tragic hero should have a flaw and/or make some mistake (hamartia). The hero need not die at the end, but he/she must undergo a change in fortune. In addition, the tragic hero may achieve some revelation or recognition (anagnorisis–“knowing again” or “knowing back” or “knowing throughout” ) about human fate, destiny, and the will of the gods. Aristotle quite nicely terms this sort of recognition “a change from ignorance to awareness of a bond of love or hate.”

Electable, but unaccountable.

Race is the historic Democrat Party go-to when a firewall is needed, but to see it applied to explain away opposition to Obama when there is zero evidence for it, thus none offered, is an absolutely wonderful sign that they realize there is no defending this man anymore. Nobody’s buying it. There is no grassroots Defend Our President! movement, not a peep. Only vested operatives are making the race claim.

Obama is narcissistic and arrogant, a political sociopath, inept and incompetent, poorly educated, and deeply deceitful. He is able to justify any lie or cheat. He is without moral compass and his intellect is dictatorially governed by radical ideas untenable in the real world.

Given all, this presidency is turning out exactly as it should.

I love this blog’s commenters.

The “revelation” came even before Obama’s stimulus plan was rammed through Congress. During a conference of Congressional leaders, Obama rejected a request from Sen. Jon Kyl to account for direct cash payments to low-income tax-filers by curtly reminding him and the rest of the GOP minority, “I won.”

Ever since, it has been as if 48% of the electorate did not count; did not exist.

From then on, Obama and his supporters completely the opposition from its consideration in everything; only his supporters mattered anymore, or ever will, in his narcissistic vision.
