New York college segregates faculty and staff by race for year-long ‘Antiracism Institute’
Ithaca College in New York is segregating faculty and staff by race for a year-long “Antiracism Institute.”
The optional weekly event, which is taking place during the 2022-2023 academic year, separates college faculty and staff members by “racial affinity groups.”
According to the event page, which was public prior to Fox News Digital contacting the college, the Antiracism Institute will “focus on the development of communities who will support one another in learning and action.”
“Because Ithaca College is a predominantly white institution, much of the institute’s work is focused on unpacking the impact of centering whiteness and working to decenter these practices.”
“The curriculum will be based on building equity literacy abilities, starting with the recognition of systemic racism and features of white supremacy in person, policy & pedagogy. We then move into responding and redressing these features in the participants’ local contexts. In the second semester the curriculum will focus on cultivating and sustaining communities,” the website states.
Faculty and staff members who are interested in joining the fall 2022 Antiracism Institute are taken to an application form where they are given the option to attend sessions every Monday for “faculty and staff who identify as people of color” or on Thursdays for “faculty and staff who identify as white.”

Whitman College (Walla Walla, WA) has been holding segregated faculty receptions this year. The most recent invitation was for an event this month:

I believe that it is illegal for a college that receives federal support to conduct segregated events, but most of them do it.
Is there a corresponding “Reception for White Faculty” that isn’t a struggle session but simply an evening of food, wine and non-alcoholic beverages?

There are much better options than enrolling at any 4-yr college in Ithaca, NY or Walla Walla, WA.
If you want to be in Jacobson’s class, you’d have to go to that other college in Ithaca.
You are correct, obviously.
Still, for the vast majority of American high school grads in the 18-22 age range, there are far better life choices than enrolling at virtually every single 4-yr American college.
I am not denigrating Professor Jacobson , nor any other gifted professor.
The fact is that imho many of Professor Jacobson’s thoughts and ideas and teachings are available via youtube and his writings and his formal legal filings.
Etc.
If a reasonably bright American teen wants to succeed in the America of the 2030s and the 2040s … better option imho would be (1) learn a job in the real world (eg, waiter, bartender, au paire, teach ESL, others) and (2) become fluent in Spanish.
Then, if you still want to attend college in English in America , you’ll still have that option. Meanwhile you’ll be far better equipped to support yourself along the way. You’ll also be far more valuable to virtually any potential employer.
Imho Professor Jacobson and most-all other outstanding college professors would agree.

And the way ya go about becoming fluent is to copy the methods used by the Department of Defense school in Monterey CA , or how the US State Department trains up its people whom they’re going to send overseas. The State Dept’s Foreign Language Institute. This is public information available at their websites.
Ya gotta start somewhere. For example, on-line classes for 1- or 2- or 4-hrs per day. Within a year or two you’re ready to enroll in an immersion program overseas. You live in a dorm w other students or in a home-stay with a family. Within another year or two you may well be ready to enroll at a college. In Spanish. For a year. Or longer. Meanwhile, you may well be working locally as a waiter or as a bartender; or teaching ESL, etc.
For the vast majority of Americans aged 18 to 22, this is a better use of your time and money than four years in Ithaca, NY etc.
Schools that I’ve had positive experiences with include not limited to Academia de Buenos Aires, Mente Argentina, DonQuijote but there are others. ( o this isn’t an ad, no I have no connection w these places)

Ya don’t learn another language in a college setting on a college schedule. The State Department knows this and so does the Dept of Defense. In my own life, I am aware of a young lady who graduated from Emory with honors , her major was Spanish, she readily acknowledged she can’t converse n Spanish.

Somebody should file an EEOC complaint for discrimination and/or a hostile work environment. This already happened at Stanford, when Jewish faculty members were told to go to the “white” affinity group. I can’t give legal advice but, the instant an employer says anything about somebody’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual preference, that’s not a “micro” aggression, it’s flat out discrimination as I see it. If people want to weigh in on this, I believe the Ithaca Times is the local newspaper.
