Republican National Committee Votes to Withdraw From Commission on Presidential Debates

The Republican National Committee has decided to listen to conservative voters for once and has voted to part ways with the Presidential Debate Commission.
For years, Republican voters have tuned in to a political debate only to see a liberal journalist as moderator, who often ends up arguing with the Republican candidate more than the Democrat on stage.
Anyone who has been following politics for some time remembers the dreadful CNBC debate of 2016, or the infamous debate moderated by Candy Crowley in 2012.
This decision by the RNC is long overdue but better late than never.

RNC votes to withdraw from Commission on Presidential Debates
The Republican National Committee unanimously voted to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates.
The RNC clarified that it is not moving away from the presidential debate format, but is rather objecting to the CPD’s control over the process. The CPD has organized presidential and vice presidential debates for more than 30 years. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel made the announcement in a statement Thursday.
“Debates are an important part of the democratic process, and the RNC is committed to free and fair debates,” McDaniel said in the statement. “The Commission on Presidential Debates is biased and has refused to enact simple and commonsense reforms to help ensure fair debates including hosting debates before voting begins and selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage.”
“Today, the RNC voted to withdraw from the biased CPD, and we are going to find newer, better debate platforms to ensure that future nominees are not forced to go through the biased CPD in order to make their case to the American people,” she added.
This is still a work in progress, as the GOP still intends to participate in debates, just not with moderators chosen by the CPD.

It remains to be seen what the RNC’s “freer and fairer” debates might look like outside of the CPD, or whether the Democrat nominees will participate in debates that aren’t part of what has been the usual path to the White House every four years.
In any case, it makes sense for the RNC to withdraw from a process that’s proven unfair to Republican candidates organized by a group that’s becoming often indistinguishable from the rest of biased mainstream media. The fact that the CPD didn’t even feign a serious look at the issues raised by the RNC made it clear that reforming the current system wasn’t a workable option and going around existing institutions to force a change became the best course of action looking ahead to 2024.

Aside from the bias, these “debates” are fossils and have been nothing but a waste of time. They’re important to people who think they’re important. There are better ways for candidates to get to the people.

Since Perot, the Rs and Ds have colluded to censor all third party candidates by deliberately raising the debate entrance threshold any time any third party comes close to achieving the previous qualification.
The parties don’t even run these debates with their own money, the fedguv pays for it. And most people never ever realize how screwed up that is.

It’s like the two major parties are somehow “official government agencies,” to the exclusion of everybody else. Like there’s a separate article of the Constitution that makes them a fourth and fifth branch of government.
De jure, political parties are private associations of like-minded citizens who choose candidates for office and promote them. De facto, they have become official, tax-sucking branches of the federal and state governments.
This is wrong, wrong, wrong, and only one of the many major constitutional deviations that have converted the USA from an association of free people and states to an oligarchic, tyrannical national government.

I would like to see lightly moderated Lincoln-Douglas style debates in out door open forums with combatants standing on tree stumps or soap boxes. A rough and tumble exchange like the old days and no handlers or spin doctors. Real positions, no hiding and no evading. An ideal moderator should be someone who despises both candidates.

A moderator free debate may be a good idea but the total list of people who would show up to a Lincoln Douglass style debate consists of the candidates immediate family only.

I think Trump hurt himself in the first debate with Biden, he was over the top aggressive and not statesman like.

I agree, The first debate in 2020 was not DJT best performance. He initially allowed Wallace as the moderator to cut him off and generally show Wallace’s bias against DJT. Biden was allowed to behave in a boorish and condescending manner. DJT allowed this to anger him and came off looking a little bullying to the wine sipping suburban women.
The 2nd was cancelled; due to Steve Scully revelations and of course Rona and Biden’s team posturing and trying to hide their candidate …DJT wiped the floor with Biden in the third debate but early voting had already begun….
The debates are important. 73 million people watched the first debate. IMO, the way forward is to jettison the debate commission and let the candidates negotiate the terms. Perhaps the commission could be retained if it was limited to organizing the logistics of the venue with a schedule of 3 Presidential and one VP debate all before early voting with the last debate on a Thursday evening the day before early voting begins; Ballots to be mailed the next morning for the States that allow mass mail balloting.
Biden was a quibbling idiot and somehow if that got us some kind of sympathy POTUS then it’s a big part of why our country is effed up now.

Good riddance! These debates exist to play “gotcha” on the Republican nominee. President Reagan was the only one in my lifetime who was able to flip the script on the moderator. They tried to help Dukakis in 88, but the rape question got turned into a devastating attack ad. After that fiasco, no moderator ever gave a Republican nominee any type of opening. Besides all of it is so scripted. There is absolutely no substance to anything either candidate says.
Debate on Joe Rogan where people will actually listen. Let him ask whatever he wants for 3hrs, no commercial breaks to save someone from their own stupidity and Rogan can shut off the microphone if one candidate starts a filibuster

The last worthwhile debate imo occurred between VP candidates Cheney and Lieberman in 2000. It left many Americans wondering whether the best candidates for the job weren’t both on the underside of the ticket.
