San Francisco Safeway Closing Early, Cutting Hours Due to ‘Off the Charts’ Shoplifting

San Francisco Safeway Closing Early, Cutting Hours Due to ‘Off the Charts’ Shoplifting

“I think like a lot of retailers they’ve been experiencing increasing property crime and theft from their stores. I think the last 6 months from what they say has been sort of – off the charts in terms of how bad it’s been.”

Safeway Supervisor Rafael Mandelman confirmed a San Francisco store will stop its 24-hour service due to shoplifting and crime in the area.

The store directors called Mandelman about theft in the store. Safeway told Mandelman that the “police rarely arrest anyone for a property crime, by the time they make it on the scene.”

They decided the store will stay open from 6 AM to 9 PM.

Mandelman said: “I think like a lot of retailers they’ve been experiencing increasing property crime and theft from their stores. I think the last 6 months from what they say has been sort of – off the charts in terms of how bad it’s been. It’s sad, upsetting and frustrating.”

Unfortunately, the early closing will affect the low-income shoppers. Mandelman hopes a meeting with the police and district attorney will lead to a solution so those people have access to the store.

Police data indicates that larceny-theft “has increased 11.1% from the state of the year to Oct. 24 when compared to the same time period the year prior.”

Target started closing its stores inside the city limits at 6 PM. The stores outside of San Francisco city limits close at 10 PM. Target spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo confirmed the stores have “been experiencing a significant and alarming rise in theft and security incidents.”

Walgreens has closed 17 stores in San Francisco in the last couple of years because of “rampant theft.” The crime has caused the stores’ security expenses to rise by 35%.

Looters attacked Neiman Marcus, taking expensive handbags. Union Square, a popular shopping destination in San Francisco, lost its flagship Gap store.

San Francisco officials have tried to combat shoplifting after taking a soft approach with its far-left ideals.

Anyone could see this coming when the city elected Chesa Boudin, the son of Weather Underground domestic terrorists, as district attorney.

At least 50 attorneys in the DA office have left since January, including progressive prosecutor Brooke Jenkins. She thinks the “criminal justice system is racist and needs reform.”

But Jenkins does not like Boudin’s approach and wants him to lose his job:

But she disagrees with what she sees as Boudin prioritizing ideology and politics over the day-to-day handling of cases, which she said has yielded an unorganized office, plummeting morale and bad outcomes for victims and their families.

It’s important to note that this is personal for Jenkins. One of those families was her husband’s — devastated by the slaying last year of his 18-year-old cousin and what the family views as an ineffective prosecution of his alleged killers.

“The D.A.’s office now is a sinking ship,” she said. “It’s like the Titanic, and it’s taking public safety along with it.”

In other words: Jenkins wants all of the supposed benefits of brain-dead virtue signaling but not the consequences. Sort of like running up thousands of dollars of credit card debt and then being upset at having to pay it off.

At any rate Jenkins and thousands like her are getting EXACTLY what they dreamed of and worked for. The idea that anti-white racism is somehow good and beneficial is a sacred belief to Communists like her, and not to be blasphemed by mere facts and data.

We call people like Brooke a mouthful of problems with a brain empty of solutions.

Perhaps you have knowledge of Jenkins and her views that isn’t in this article. I can only go by what’s been written here, and I think it’s easy to understand how she can consider the justice system racist and in need of reform.

Why would you assume that reform would make it anti-white, or racist? What makes you think she’d find those things good and beneficial? Is there a reason you’re calling her a communist?

I feel one of us is missing something.

You are missing a lot more than “something”. The system isn’t racist. The “reforms” being demanded would make it racist. Any “reform” that tries to close the racial gap in the numbers arrested, charged, or convicted. or in those whose violent resistance to police ends in their deaths, is necessarily racist, because that gap accurately reflects the gap in crimes committed.

        Milhouse is correct.

@AnAdultinDiaper – do the research. Look at primary sources such as national crime stats. Don’t just take the biased news medias’ stats which are very manipluated. Typically they make apples-to-oranges comparisons. Such as when they say Blacks are arrested at 2x their percentage of the population. That is a false comparison because Blacks commit murders and other violent crimes at 4x their percent of the population. We can debate the reasons why there is more crime by Blacks – but there is no question the commit violent crime at higher than their percent of population and higher than their arrest rate (meaning cops arrest them at a rate that is lower than you’d expect if arrests were to correlate with incidence of crime.

For example – see the research by Black Harvard Professor Roland Fryer.
Quite from the Abstract = ” On the most extreme use of force – officer-involved shootings – we find NO RACIAL DIFFERENCES in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account.”

The Biased Media NEVER EVER reference Professor Fryer’s research because it does not fit their narrative (ie propaganda)

In 2016 economist Roland G. Fryer, Jr., the youngest African American ever to be awarded tenure at Harvard, came upon what he would call the “most surprising result of my career.” In a study of racial differences in the use of force by police officers, Fryer found that Black and Hispanic civilians were no more likely than white civilians to be shot to death by police. “You know, protesting is not my thing,” Fryer told the New York Times. “But data is my thing. So I decided that I was going to collect a bunch of data and try to understand what really is going on when it comes to racial differences in police use of force.” Three thousand hours later, after meticulous records collection and analysis, the data had spoken. Although Black people are significantly more likely to experience non-lethal force at the hands of police than white people in similar situations, Fryer concluded, there is no racial bias in fatal police shootings.

See my reply and link below. I disagree entirely with Fryer, as the data actually suggests white people are more likely to be shot by the police than black people on a per-interaction basis.

That doesn’t however change the fact that once in the system, black offenders are more harshly treated than their white peers.

If it makes you feel any better, the racial disparity is nothing when compared to the gender justice gap.

amatuerwrangler in reply to AnAdultInDiapers. | November 1, 2021 at 7:43 pm

What she and others like her call “racist” is based on pure numbers. She complains that a disproportionate number of black folk are arrested and incarcerated.

What else would she expect: black people do things that cause one to be arrested and incarcerated at a much greater percentage than other people in our population. The easiest way to avoid arrest and incarceration is to not do things that get you arrested and incarcerated. It seems like an easy solution, easily reached on a personal basis. I see almost none of those wanting to change things suggesting this solution.

from now on just type “DERP!!” as its much faster.

Well first you couldn’t get prescriptions and over the counter sorts of drug store items–when Walgreens closed all or most all of its locations in SFO. And now the San Francisco shoplifters are well on their way towards creating a “food desert” for the SFO residents.

Over 5,000 businesses have already closed the door. The vast majority single shop operations without an out-of-city shop to lessen the blow. Restaurants everywhere were experiencing eat-and-run, small grocers walked away from leases as did retail dry good shops. Landlords are dying now. So many families have left the city that some schools have empty classrooms. Tax base is rumored to be collapsing. The city is populated by the wealthy and the poor.

That, and a further prescription desert because many supermarkets now have in-store pharmacies.

SFO is the airport. . .

Way to take care of the downtrodden workers leftist.

It would appear that San Francisco is rapidly turning into Detroit West, and the residents have no one to blame but themselves.

puhiawa in reply to Rusty Bill. | November 1, 2021 at 9:16 pm

The thing is SF land area is far smaller than Detroit and home values are still in the millions as the tech companies continue their domination of American high-wage employment and lifestyle. The black population was mostly driven out to Oakland decades ago, so I suspect crime is actually being committed by the ever-present homeless and commute-criminals. So we don’t see empty houses, just a childless, angry, dysfunctional mess. People just get on the bus and refuse to pay, being an example. Drooling idiots everywhere.

All correct, as an aside Oakland is also losing black population. Blacks are being driven out of CA by the high cost of housing, the state is only 6% black now compared to 13% nationally. Oakland, once a center of black culture used to be over half black, is now barely over 20%.

Voting has consequences

The concept of the self-service store had a good run, but perhaps it’s time to roll it up.

In the future it will be all pick-up-at-the-curb (after up-front payment, of course). And if you can’t figure out how to order online, perhaps the store will offer a small room where you can get help while using the store’s tablets or computers. All of which will (of course) be locked down. As will the furniture (think of a prison visiting room).

Yes, costs will be higher. And shopping perhaps less pleasant (at least for those who want to look over the produce). But I don’t see how the now-traditional supermarket model can survive when anyone can run in and steal whatever can be grabbed with little or no fear of apprehension or punishment.

(A possible alternative would be members-only stores with strict screening at the door and intensive (but unobtrusive) surveillance throughout, and a no-recourse disinvitation policy. Although such stores might still fall to a mob-rush.)

The black member of Portland’s city council is opposed to stores using face recognition software at the door of chin stores to prevent known shoplifters from entering because she says it will be used disproportionately against people of color. Well du-UH!

Obviously charge admission at the door with refunds on the way out less your receipt purchases.

DaddyO in reply to rhhardin. | November 1, 2021 at 7:49 pm

Like going to Sam’s club… show your card going in and your receipt on the way out

Same with Costco. Soon, all stores will be charging a membership to keep bums out.

Costco was brilliant in this regard. From what I was told, they started out by offering memberships through large employers. When we got ours 25 years ago, we had friends who had us buy items because they weren’t in the select group to be offered a membership. Costco also benefits by having stores further out in the sticks. It guaranteed that the majority, if not all, members would have an actual paycheck. I wonder about our local chain stores and why they haven’t gone the membership route yet. I suspect that the libtards have threatened them with discrimination lawsuits. But I can name at least one location of a chain that closed becaused shoplifting had reached 14% of the store’s gross sales. And yes, it created a food desert for that neighborhood. It recently reopened as a large Asian foods store and seems to be doing well, as I am guess that it is harder for the .gov types to go after them on a racism basis, so they can actually enforce receipt and package checking at the door.

Cool, SF was really cool for a long time. Enjoyed all my visits with my brother who had moved to the area. Still have fond memories of jumping the cable cars a block from the start so I could skip the quarter fare.
And Bart was new and a cool way to travel the area. I’d ride from end to end just because it was so cool.
But the voters screwed up and believed the bs of the commies.
Too bad, so sad. Enjoy the shopping desert and increased risk of harm as the predators circle the shrinking cover for some easy targets.

As recently as 1995 (but now a generation ago) SF had a sane mayor, former Police Chief Frank Jordan who was elected by the homeowners in the western half of the city. That year I moved out, coincidentally but luckily the same week Willie Brown was elected mayor. Today Brown looks like the voice of sanity compared to what they have now. What a mess.

“Unfortunately, the early closing will affect the low-income shoppers.”

How so? Can they not get up early and shop, or, shop before 9PM like the not-low-income?

Chesa Boudin is the district attorney. He is also the son of two Weatherman Underground cop killers. He was raised by Bill Ayers and his wife. He is the son of terrorists. He interened for Hugo Chavez of all people.
He said day one he would not prosecute quality of life crimes.
You can shoplift $900 per day in SF and not be charged.
This didn’t come from nowhere ya know.
