‘Missing White Woman Syndrome’ – Joy Reid Racializes Gabby Petito Death
Reid complains media doesn’t cover missing non-white women, but no one is stopping her from doing it.
MSNBC “ReidOut” host Joy Reid, arguably the cable news queen of wacko rants and insane conspiracy theories, actually had one of the saner segments in the history of her time on television Monday night. She highlighted an issue that doesn’t get much attention in mainstream media, including on her network.
Reid began the segment by talking about the case of Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old New York woman who went missing for days. Petito, sadly, was confirmed dead on Tuesday after the Teton County coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on remains found in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming Sunday that matched Petito’s description. According to the autopsy results, her death was a homicide.
Florida police and the FBI are searching for Petito’s fiancé, 23-year-old Brian Laundrie, who resides in the state. Laundrie and Petito had been on a road trip for several weeks when her family reported her missing on September 11th, believing text messages sent from her phone to them in the two weeks prior weren’t really from her.
On her show, Reid took a moment to acknowledge the pain Petito’s family was going through, saying they “deserved answers and justice” before pivoting to speculating why Petito’s case had gotten so much national media attention:

Now, it goes without saying that no family should ever have to endure that kind of pain. And the Petito family certainly deserve answers and justice. But the way this story has captivated the nation has many wondering, why not the same media attention when people of color go missing?
Well, the answer actually has a name, missing white woman syndrome, the term coined by the late and great Gwen Ifill to describe the media and public fascination with missing white women, like Laci Peterson or Natalee Holloway, while ignoring cases involving missing people of color.
Reid then brought Black and Missing Foundation CEO/co-founder Derrica Wilson and Not Our Native Daughters founder Lynnette Grey Bull to discuss their organizations and what they do to highlight the stories of missing black and indigenous persons.

While even conservatives were inclined to concede that Reid had a point, the issue many took with her rant is that she conveniently overlooked the fact that not only is her network guilty of not giving much attention to black missing persons cases, but she is, too.
For years, Reid’s been given an enormous platform to raise awareness of these types of issues, but do we see nightly segments or at least once a week segments from her bringing attention to any specific cases of black people who have gone missing? No. Because apparently, Reid would rather pick fights with pop singers and allege that conservatives “love COVID so much you want it to spread into schools, in the office, in the Walmart, on the cruise ships, and at the club.”
“[W]here people wanted to recall [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom is where’s the most COVID,” Reid said last week. “So, they’re like, ‘give us more. Inject it in us. Is there a way we can drink it in a Kool-Aid cup? Because we want it. And we want it bad and we want this man to get out of our way and we want our COVID.’ It’s insane.”
Another area where Reid and the media fall way short on reporting about black victims of crime is in cases like the one below, and cases where black children are senselessly murdered in drive-by shootings almost every week in Democrat-run cities like Chicago:

Good thing she took a “moment” to acknowledge the woman’s family’s pain (whose body is still missing BTW) before turning to talk about things that could just inflict more pain on that same family.
Her rant obviously digs in an undertone that not only suggests Petito’s life doesn’t deserve the as much attention as its getting but that the people trying to help might actually be racist because they didn’t pursue other cases with the same vigor. What a wack job that really needs to be taken down off the air good!
Now let’s dissect the obvious about what makes a story like this media-worthy…it’s clicks and editorially-driven narratives, not race.
If the case isn’t interesting enough to be click bait, it doesn’t get air time. There are hundreds of missing cases across the country each day and race doesn’t play a factor compared to the fact that this was a “social media influencer” so she has an built-in group of followers and others will latch on as that following latches on. I’m positive if a non-white fake celebrity of similar fake internet fame like this one were “lucky” enough to go missing, they would be covered in similar fashion. I’d also argue that by sheer volume there are more “crime thriller” level of stories with whites missing and likely murdered than non-whites just because of the racial population proportions in the country.
The story also has to pass the editorial narratives factor at the media establishment covering these stories. We’ve seen plenty of interesting stories not get covered because of the inconvenient, “problematic” narratives they would foster that are against the predominantly leftist wing of the media. You hit the nail on the head with the gang violence story…doesn’t fit the right narrative.

I guess she is reasoning that because they are 12% of the population, they should make up 50% of these stories, because they are represented in more than 50% of all commercials. Maybe, she thinks their special privilege, like free passes into colleges, free passes in butting in line, free passes in committing crime, entitles them to be put ahead of everyone, in every situation.
In the famous “doll tests,” black children overwhelmingly chose white dolls over black dolls, seeing them as prettier and more “good.” Rationally, we want things to be fair, but life is not fair. It’s better to accept the real world, rather than try to force the real world to conform to your narrative of how you want to see it. Why? Because seeing the world as a narrative, rather than facing actually facts is a neurosis or psychoses. There is actually much truth to the claim that leftism is a mental illness, because they want to believe a narrative of how they want to see the world, rather than accepting factually as it is. Gabby Petito is pretty and white, which led to the media fascination over her story. That’s reality.

Is it wrong to wish that Joy Reid would go missing?
Joy Reid doesn’t care about any of the missing children or women, black or otherwise, that don’t get coverage. She only cares about this case because everyone else does and she goes where the viewers are.
And besides that, maybe we should have a conversation about racialized news coverage? Let’s start with missing white woman syndrome, and presumably end at black man resisting arrest syndrome because we’re not ready for that conversation.
This woman is a complete dirtbag, just like anyone who actually watches her show.
Matt Walsh, in his tweet above, suggests the answer: The media doesn’t report widely ANY crime that involves POC-on-POC violence. Because most violent crime in the black community (at least) is committed by other blacks, it’s likely that most missing black women are missing because of criminal acts of other blacks (likely men, an out-of-favor group that in this case gets a pass due to race).
There’s the answer to Joy’s question.

Being more blunt: black on black violence is so common it is not newsworthy.
Notice that Reid also doesn’t complain when the networks and CNN run non-stop hysterical coverage anytime a black gets shot by cops — even though more whites than blacks are shot by cops in the U.S. each year. We never see any media coverage when the cops shoot or kill a white person, but we get 24/7 saturation coverage when cops shoot or kill a black person.
Why isn’t Reid worked up over that “inequity”?

I have to say I’m fatigued with coverage on this story. It is heart breaking- I have a daughter I’m teaching to be an assassin to avoid this sort of thing- but the news media is running a little hard with dead hot blonde girl schict.
There’s a story in Maple Valley Wa about a 15 year old girl who went for a joy ride and intentionally mowed over a 50 year old man jogging- actual murder. It was witnessed and on video. It was brutal. It was absolutely intentional. She bragged about it to her friends. The owner of the car she was driving saw the video and said that’s my car and got the girl to turn herself in.
The other horrific part of this is it was not her first time. She hit another pedestrian earlier- but did not kill them.
The King County (Seattle) prosecutors office is not charging her as an adult. This is the same office that is currently charging a cop for murder for shooting a suspect that was on a drug fueled rampage.
This doesn’t take away from the tragedy of Gabby being killed, but the perspective is out of whack.
She’s right but it’s the market and the news is in the business of selling eyeballs to advertisers.

Petito’s murder simply demonstrates more of the utter incompetence by the FBI.
She and the boyfriend left on a trip. The boyfriend came back WITHOUT HER, and refused to talk to the police or FBI.
And then the laughably obviously guilty POS disappeared because they were too stupid to keep track of him.
It wasn’t really the fault of the local cops in Florida. Their job is to investigate crimes that take place in their jurisdiction. Laundrie killed Gabby in Wyoming, not Florida. The FBI could have asked the Florida cops to keep Laundrie under surveillance since he was a suspect in a missing person’s case, but apparently they didn’t bother.

The media doesn’t cover missing men at all, regardless of skin color, and there are a lot more missing men than women, just as there are a lot more unsolved murders of men than women. In fact, if I recall correctly there are more unsolved murders of men than total murders of women.
Maybe there wouldn’t be so many missing black girls if their black fathers were anywhere to be found
The funny thing is that if Joy Reid was abucted and murdered it’d be a much bigger story than the one she’s complaining about.
Imagine if she was abducted and murdered by Brian Seltzer? We’d have a two for one.
Joy just knows in her heart that if she ever went missing, the people who know her would be actively impeding investigations.
Blacks are 30X more likely to be murdered by another black, but she is all gung-ho with the rest of them blaming whitie.
Indeed, an article at PJMedia provides much evidence that the real reason missing black women aren’t ballyhooed on the media is that their suspected killers are nearly always black men. And when the suspect or eventual killer of a white woman is a black man, those white women don’t receive airplay, either.
If she has a problem with biased coverage of murder victims that focus on white girls, let her take it up with her FELLOW LEFTISTS who control these “news” outlets.
While I despise Joy Reid, a hypocrite broken clock is still correct twice a day. The thing is, the media is part entertainment, and has finite time to use for stories. In a country where at any given time there are tens of thousands of missing, it is no stretch to understand that it is a beauty contest to get that finite time.
Race aside, MEN rarely get that time. Nor do the fat, the unattractive, the poor, the elderly, the middle aged. If you are the wrong class, uneducated, or just not compelling, you will not make the cut.
So if you are a VERY attractive, young, female, Black college student from an upper middle class family, not dating a gang banger, and disappearing under interesting & compelling circumstances, yeah you will get your 15 minutes.
With the tens of thousands killed every year in the United States (Murder capital of the Western World) why exactly do I care at all about Petito? 19141 murders last year with some years being higher that is far too many to pretend the Petito case deserves major coverage.
Does the accused in Petito’s death deserve a fair trial, and on the flip side does the prosecution deserve a fair chance to put the suspect away without the prying media potentially undermining the case? The defendant can’t have a fair trial in a media circus environment.
Joy Reid is wrong to racialize this and didn’t mention the real reasons this case never deserved media coverage but yes we are following a non-story, and frankly there are way too many murders in the United States for me to tear my heart out over the coverage.
When we lower our murder rate to Japan’s we could pretend every murder is a story.
