Biden Insists April’s Dismal Jobs Report Shows U.S. Economy is on the ‘Right Track’
No, you cannot spin this garbage jobs report. Take the L and go home.
The April jobs report showed the U.S. added only 266,000 jobs during the month and the unemployment ticked up to 6.1%.
Economists are usually off the mark, but holy cow. They predicted 978,000 job growth and unemployment of 5.8%. I have never seen such a huge difference between prediction and numbers.
Miserable considering the U.S. started to see some growth at the end of former President Donald Trump’s term.
Biden Gloats
So, of course, President Joe Biden tried to spin the report as a positive for the economy:
“You might think we should be disappointed,” Biden said of the numbers, but claimed the “American Rescue Plan,” which passed in late March, “was designed to help us over the course of a year—not 60 days.”
“Today, there is more evidence our economy is moving in the right direction,” Biden said, while acknowledging, however, that “it is clear we have a long way to go.”
Biden, though, touted his administration, saying 1.5 million jobs have been created since he took office.
“This is progress. This is a testament to our new strategy,” Biden said. “We’ve got work to do, to state the obvious, we have work to do.”
He added: “Let’s keep our eye on the ball.”

Unemployment Benefits Hindering Growth
Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi opened her big mouth, using the report to push everyone to pass the bloated American Jobs and Families Plan.
No. Just stop. The numbers should be ticking up because numerous states have started to open. Jobs are coming back.
No doubt people are still scared of COVID and some cannot find child care. But employers also pointed to the enhanced unemployment benefits:
Some employers and economists cite enhanced unemployment benefits as another factor. More than 16.1 million people received unemployment benefits the week ended April 17, the Labor Department said Thursday. That includes gig workers and the self-employed who are typically not eligible for such payments.
Under relief bills passed by Congress, those receiving jobless benefits get an additional $300 a week on top of regular state benefits, which average $318 a week, according to the Labor Department. That means the average unemployment recipient earns better than the equivalent of working full time at $15 an hour. Those enhanced benefits are available until September, for a maximum of nearly 18 months—about three times longer than most states typically allow.
The benefits also don’t encourage people to take any old job. People can be picky:
Lorne Zaman lost his jobs as a concert promoter in Los Angeles more than a year ago. He hasn’t worked since, supporting himself on savings, stimulus checks and unemployment benefits, which have been about $750 a week in recent months. The benefits cover his rent and other bills, he said, but don’t leave any extra money at the end of the month.
Mr. Zaman, 45, said he’s had no interest in taking available jobs at warehouses or restaurants, but he’s eager to return to the entertainment industry. His former employer told him the company is likely to start recalling workers within the next few months.
“I really enjoyed what I did,” he said. “If the government is going to pay you to stay home, you’re going to do that unless that job you really want comes along.”

Gas is already over $3/gal here (Florida panhandle), up from a Trump low of $.99 /gal. My corner store (a Circle K) has gone from being open 24/7 for years to posting its brief opening times on the door because they can’t get anyone to work there for less than the state+feds are paying them to stay home.
This is Trump country, and if there are signs of impending problems here . . . .
This is completely anecdotal, of course, but this store was open 24/7 all last year and up until just a couple weeks ago when it started closing at 11 and reopening in the morning. The newer “floating posted hours” policy (a hand-written sign on the door saying the store will be open from, say, 7 a.m. to 7 p.om.) is in place because only the managers seem to be working, with exactly one clerk (she’s white), who told me she could never take the “Biden bribe” (her term, not mine). It’s bizarre to see this happening here, but as it is happening even here, it does not bode well for the rest of the country.
The local stores near me are having the same problem. Never had trouble before.
Yet, when it was passed and signed into law it was proclaimed to be the miracle bill, the one that’s going to fix everything starting right then and there. Yes, there was much rejoicing over another round of stimulus checks whether you personally needed them or not, but states and localities are still trying to spend the money given to them from the 4 previous stimulus bills passed last year. Then there is the “infrastructure” stuff and associated tax increases coming down the pipeline.
We’re already clearly starting to see that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Go shopping anywhere. Although Janet Yellen’s honest comments on the subject the other day were walked back within hours because she learned saying stuff as Fed Chair is a lot different from saying stuff as Treasury Secretary.

I know this isn’t probably the correct place to put this but is anyone else having problems getting to Parler? All I get on some web browsers is a nginx “404 Not Found” page and on other web browsers I get some page claiming back end maintenance and they’ll be back in a few hours. And that was at least a day ago. Has parler been cancelled again or what is going on with it again.
Just looked at parler.com. Message shown there reads:

I spent a lot of time trying to signup for Parler. I even shut down all security trying to get it to work. It is buggy and pisspoor software. No error messages, no response to communications, no phone support.
So I gave up.
I think that Parler is working on its servers. I have heard that Parler has had some problems with DDOS attacks since they have been on their new server.
No doubt progressives were offended Parler is somewhat back on its feet, and are busy kicking them while they’re down.

I don’t think they’ll ever lift them. They signaled that by recently extending the Federal covid order until mid-September, rather than waiting to see the data for the remaining couple of months of the current order. That says the covid order is no longer about covid, if it ever was. I’m certain it will be extended, early or not, because mid-September is coincidentally timed to coincide with the beginning of the fall spike natural to many coronaviruses.
Since the Federal extension basically killed this summer’s tourist season (who the heck wants to wear a mask for 6 hours both out and back, plus maybe 10-12 hours a day for places like Disney) I wonder if the airlines and aircraft leasing companies can survive it. They are bizarrely gung ho for medical passports even though their customers hate them.
Not coincidentally, pretty much every national and regional chain (grocery, restaurant, big box, you name the industry) in Florida piously announced they won’t be following DeSantis canceling of local covid orders. They will continue to require masks and social distancing of all patrons indefinitely, for our own good. Most said that means “as long as the CDC guidelines exist”. For me here in southeast Florida I see no businesses at all, large or small, that have removed their mask signs even though they are no longer required by law.

The real purpose of the high expectations and optimistic predictions is to motivate everyone to work hard to maximize results.
The next step is to ignore the data. Claim the data is flawed and that the projections were actually met. The Soviet Union operated this way. All five year plans were a great success. The factories always met or exceeded their production goals. Right up until the economy completely imploded.
So then, we adopt the traditional strategy?
