Biden COVID-19 Advisor Suggests 4 to 6 Week Lockdown

Joe Biden already chose his COVID-19 task force, which includes Dr. Michael Osterholm.
Osterholm, an expert on infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota, suggested a 4 to 6-week lockdown “with the government compensating workers for lost wages.”

“We could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages, for individual workers,” he told the outlet, noting low interest rates. He added that federal borrowing could bail out small- and medium-sized companies, cities, states and county governments.
“If we did that, then we could lock down for four to six weeks, and if we did that, we could drive the numbers down,” he said. “Like they’ve done in Asia. Like they did in New Zealand and Australia.”
Ah, yes. A perfect way to get people to rely on the government.

Osterholm has a history of coronavirus fear-mongering:
He said a vaccine could be widely available next year – but not before the risk of “pandemic fatigue” sets in as people slack off on their adherence to coronavirus health guidelines.
In particular, he warned, Americans could start gathering more in indoor spaces, where the virus spreads more easily, as the weather grows cooler.
So he is urging social distancing and other public health recommendations in addition to renewed shutdowns.
Get back in line, people. Stop being individuals! How dare you want freedom.
Osterholm declared America is going to face “COVID HELL” very soon:
Earlier this week, Osterholm warned that the country was about to enter “COVID hell” as new cases soar and hospitals see a renewed strain on their capacity to treat the illness.
“When we were at 32,000 cases a day in the United States, people thought that maybe things were going to start going away,” he told Minnesota Public Radio Monday. “As you saw, we’re now at 125,000 cases per day. We’re seeing hospitals right now completely overwhelmed in a number of states.”
Those numbers will continue to climb, he predicted, for at least the next two to three months.
Covid hell.
I really wish people put this much emphasis on the flu. Stupid me didn’t get the flu shot last year (I have to with my 3 autoimmune disorders) and I got it, but it quickly turned into pneumonia. Almost had to go to the hospital, but I managed it.
Trust me, government. Us vulnerable people can take care of ourselves. We take the precautions we need to every cold and flu season (minus last year and I paid for it with pneumonia and a tongue lashing from my rheumatologist). We don’t need healthy people to give up their lives and well-being.
Just leave us alone.

Not in the general population, in common use. Even in controlled environments, with trained personnel, they may be unproductive or counterproductive to mitigating infection. Following protocol is a hard problem in the best circumstances, especially over time.
What we’re seeing here is the science of tyranny. The lockdowns, masks, limits on how many people can gather in any particular area (including how many may gather in a home for Thanksgiving dinner — but excluding mobs of leftists), etc. are a device to beat down the public and train them to accept whatever absurd order they’re given without question. This is preparation for the rule they intend to impose on us if the Marxists succeed in getting full control of government.
I heard a guy on Prager’s show today, who is a statistician and former professor at Cornell’s medical school. William Briggs. He wrote a book about the nonsense going on with CV19, I was so impressed by him, I bought the book.
There is more BS flying around than coronavirus, we cannot allow people like this to run our lives into the ground. My mother in law has been petrified for months, my wife hasn’t said much just to keep the peace but she’s been frustrated. I told my wife – you have to challenge what she’s telling you, you cannot be silent any more. She has started to push back, not being a jerk about it, and her mom started thinking differently about stuff for the first time.
We have to fight against this tyranny every way we can.
Have your wife ask your mother-in-law: If there is so much interest in our well-being, why do we hear so much about measures to control our behavior and so little about ways to boost our immune system?

there is likely some unknown factor they are not even aware of, like in fucking bugs and rodents for all we know
heck – they relied on bad models and projections early on, which hadn’t seemed to improve months and months later as the numbers were factored down and down as time went on
yet now we are getting a big spike in cases for no reason these fucks have predicted
this virus is not going to be beaten back until a vaccine can make half the population immune to it
it is going to take a combination of people having antibodies + a reliable vaccine to eventually kill it off

Germany and England had lockdowns, yet are facing more Wuflu cases. Sweden didn’t have the draconian lockdowns other European countries had, yet seemed to have escaped the worst (so far).
Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, and I have to wonder if climate and the warming weather and general climate had something to do with the reduction in cases. Also, Australia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world (3.3 persons per km^2), and that may also play a role. Finally, Australia does not share a border with any other country (unlike the US, Germany, and most of Europe), so the number of places of foreign entry are perhaps more easily controlled.
All in all I am skeptical of the ability of lockdowns to fight a pandemic.
Herd immunity and warm weather……
Australia is not sparsely populated. Most of the population is actually densely packed into a few large cities. All the empty area is irrelevant to the virus.
And the major difference between their experience and ours seems simply to be the draconian nature of their lockdown, which most of America would simply refuse to obey, and the fact that their borders are not very porous.
It’s pretty much impossible to go to Australia now, unless you’re a citizen or resident, in which case when you arrive you have to go to a quarantine hotel, at your expense. And you can’t leave Australia without proving that you live overseas, and/or that you do not intend to return within the next six months (I think). I’m not sure of the details, but it’s something like that. I know many people who applied for permission to leave and were refused, but I also know students at US colleges who were allowed to leave on the understanding that they’ll be here for the whole US academic year.
I actually have friends in Australia. The federal government prevented travel between provinces, including highway stops looking for offending travelers. My friends are not so impressed with their governments response. They cannot stay locked down forever.
States, not provinces. It’s not Canada. But yes, the lockdown was (and for now remains) serious. And that is what this guy is proposing for the USA. Now other than “it’s offensive to our liberties”, tell me why it can’t work here. The two reasons I can think of are that it can’t work because people here will just not obey it, and that it can’t work because it’s impossible to stop people crossing the border. Give me some more reasons, if you can think of any.
In AZ we had big spikes of cases in May – June time period. A contributor the case count was sick individuals crossing the border to get help in the US hospitals. I do not see this stopping with a different administration. A lockdown of US citizens does nothing to eliminate this cause.
My Aussie friends have realized that they will not be able to travel internationally until the vaccine(s) have been widely applied. In addition, tourist will not be welcome to either NZ or Australia, causing damage to their economies.
Yes, that is part of the price they are paying. And the people I speak to seem to believe that the results show that it was worth it. The Andrews government is very popular in VIC at the moment, because it beat the virus regardless of the price.
I try to introduce people to the concept that a life has a determinable value, and it’s not worth spending more than that to save it, and that if we start saying that it’s worth spending an infinite amount to save even one life our lives will end up not only “poor, solitary, nasty, and brutish”, but also, ironically “short”. They don’t get it.
They’ve got a population of about 25 million which puts them between Fl and TX. Now compare that to 330 million in a country with porous borders that’s not an island.
And how long will that last? Australia had one of the most severe lockdowns on the planet, but the virus is currently raging through the Americas, Europe, and Asia. So what happens when people are actually allowed to visit Australia again? Have the people there begun to acquire any sore of resistance to COVID?

They still have an economy. They’re a lot poorer than they were, but now they can start going back to work and rebuild. They can’t have anyone coming in, so the tourist industry is pretty much dead, but other industries don’t depend on that. And once everyone can be vaccinated they can reopen.
The point is that draconian lockdowns like this guy is proposing do seem to work. That doesn’t mean they should be adopted. We may decide the price is not worth paying. That is what I have been saying ever since the beginning of this plague, even while I witnessed the bodies piling up, even while I spent days thinking about the funerals that I wished I could attend. I believed and still believe that the cost of preventing it was simply not worth paying. But if we did decide to pay it it seems that it could work.
Lockdowns certainly do work. But they must be rigorous and strictly enforced (and be far more draconian than many Americans would tolerate – myself among them). If people don’t have contact with each other, the virus simply cannot find a path for transmission.
There are three problems with such lockdowns:
First, they are far beyond the authority of any government in this country.
Second, they arguably cause more damage than they prevent.
Third, once lifted, the population has no (additional) acquired immunity, and the virus is once again able to spread. What then – another lockdown?
They don’t work, they just delay
Thought I remembered the name Osterholm. Mike took a realists approach to how he’d address Covid and decided to simply live his life and not submit to fear. I.e., it’s here, it’s not going to go away, likely he will get Covid and he’ll probably survive.

I have visited Colombia and Costa Rica many times, they tried this for about 6 months and did not prevent outbreaks. After months they finally reopened the country internally and to foreign travel. The only people who suffered were the citizens.
You were limited in the days and hours you could be outside your residence, security would check your id prior to entering a store yo prove you could be out on those days.

Now this is weird. This same guy was on Joe Rogan’s podcast #1439 on March 10th. There he said that trying to stop an influenza virus is like trying to stop the wind. He was talking about how the virus will be around until herd immunity kills it and that masks would not protect healthy people.
Does anybody know when he changed his opinion?
Robert Redfield (CDC Director) did substantially the same thing. In May published an official CDC summary of 14 studies showing masks offer no statistically significant protection against respiratory viruses, then in June said that masks offer stronger protection than vaccines and that we need 6-12 weeks of nationwide, mandatory mask wearing.
The only thing those masks are designed to do is to prevent some fool like in the Seinfeld episode from spitting out a Mentos into the patient on the surgery gurney in the operating room.
