San Antonio City Council Declares ‘Chinese Virus,’ ‘Kung Flu Virus’ as Hate Speech
“Xenophobia is ‘in our DNA…I believe that it’s more dangerous and more contagious than a virus.'”
The San Antonio City Council passed a resolution that designated the terms “Chinese Virus” and “Kung Fu Virus” as hate speech in response to the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.
From KSAT:
The resolution, which was put forward by Mayor Ron Nirenberg, states that hate crimes, discrimination, and aggression against Asians and Jews are on the rise as the groups are blamed for the disease’s outbreak and spread. The city is committed, the resolution reads, “the safety and well-being of all community members, including the Asian and Jewish communities, and in combatting hate crimes targeting Asians, Jews and Pacific Islanders.”
The resolution also states that the use of terms like “Chinese Virus” or “Kung Fu virus” encourage hate crimes and incidents against Asians as well as spread misinformation. Meanwhile, it says, the Jewish community has been targeted with blame and conspiracy theories regarding the disease.
“We’ve seen incidents that are clearly racist in nature all around this country, and we’ve even seen some incidents here. But this is really about standing in solidarity with all the members of our community,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg told reporters following the vote.
The city council insisted that no certain race, ethnicity, or nationality created the virus. The members even pointed out to WHO “guidance against using geographic descriptors for the virus that could fuel acts of ethnic or racial discrimination.”
I guess they will eventually add the Spanish Flu and the West Nile Virus? Lyme Disease? I don’t think so.
San Antonio Council Member Manny Pelaez on supporting a resolution that denounces phrases like “Chinese virus” or “Kung Fu virus” bc it encourages hate crimes: Xenophobia is “in our DNA…I believe that it’s more dangerous and more contagious than a virus.”

Officials claim that some people have targeted businesses and people because of the coronavirus:
Businesses and individuals in San Antonio have been victimized due to the coronavirus — including Golden Star, a Chinese restaurant near the city’s downtown, officials said.
“It’s been in operation for almost 90 years,” Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales said, according to the station. “They’re a Chinese restaurant family and they have been threatened. They have been the victims of hate speech and hate crimes, with vandalism and that sort of thing on their property.”
Communist China continues to push a propaganda campaign to hide the fact that the virus began in Wuhan. Did it start in a wet market? Did it start at the lab? Either way, the outbreak began in Wuhan. It began in China.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz lost his mind over the resolution:
This is NUTS. SA City Council behaving like a lefty college faculty lounge, triggered by Chick-fil-A & the words “Wuhan virus.” If they want to investigate someone, start with NYT & CNN who both repeatedly (and rightly) referred to it as “the Chinese coronavirus.” #NoSpeechPolice https://t.co/a10BZAvleQ

San Antonio City Council IS Hate Speech..
Let’s make those communists address this.

Good to know that the city council in San Antonio has solved all the city’s most pressing problems, so that they can now waste their time on bullshit virtue-signalling nonsense like this.
I attended a conference in San Antonio some years ago. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Alamo.
In light of Mr. Pelaez’s comments, I wonder what the men who died heroically at the Alamo thought they were fighting for.
Methinks they would be wearing them as caps already SNARK.

—Ace of Spades
The Alamo was of no strategic value to Texas, and Sam Houston had wanted to blow it up and abandon it. The battle’s importance was purely in the symbolism of a small band of Texians standing up for a short while against the Mexican juggernaut. Rather like the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, in fact. It was pointless in itself, but it inspired others, and that inspiration is what eventually won the war for Texas.
lord, millhouse–your comprehension of the relevance of historical events is very nearly as miniscule as your comprehension of the law
the village green at concord had little strategic value either but consider what events there eventually brought about
the garrison COULD have abandoned the Mission and escaped–they were outnumbered in the area of ten to one or more–instead, they chose to fight and hold their positions to the last man(there were actually a few survivors)and most of them were VOLUNTEERS–forever a sterling example of courage and sacrifice
It’s a free country, so the San Antonio City Council is entitled to say whatever it damn well likes. Just as we are entitled to call Wuhan Disease by its name.
They are correct, though, that official WHO policy is not to name diseases after places any more. That came in about five years ago, so it doesn’t affect diseases named before then. But the WHO’s polices are about as relevant as San Antonio City Council’s. Nobody put the WHO in charge of naming diseases. It’s Wuhan Disease no matter what the WHO likes to call it.
After the Chinese SARS viruses, tool? How convenient
The policy was made in 2015, so yes, after SARS. And yes, that means it wasn’t made for the purpose of avoiding calling this virus Chinese. But it’s still only a WHO policy, and not binding on anyone. We are each free to reject it, and in my opinion we should.
And I’d really like to know what brought all the downvotes on that. Well, I do know; it’s all the people here who think like leftists, and object to mentioning any fact that they wish weren’t so.
Wuhan flu would be the convention of the last 120 years. PC not needed.
Until 2015, when the WHO decided it would no longer do that, because it hurts people’s feelingz.
A San Antonio Snowflake is Oxymoronic?
Whew. Didnt mention chinkinpox. I’m in the clear.
What about all of those people that identify as chickens (aka liberals)?
The rule is if I decide to be offended, then you are a racist.
Hate speech = anything you say with which the left disagrees
And you are racist for recognizing that fact.

Wuhan coronavirus is in the clear.
Here is how I reference the Wuhan Flu in all my postings:
Wuhan/Covid19/Li Wenliang flu*
*We should honor Dr. Li Wenliang’s memory and courage for trying to warn the world about this new flu.
It’s KUNG FLU, get it right. These guys are communists.
Actually, NPR came up with that first, so I’m running with it.
How do they feel about “Li Jinping’s Excrescent Adventure”?
Sorry, “XI Jinping’s Excrescent Adventure”.
You Winnie the Pooh Pooh Xi Xi ?

I’m tempted to misspell “heh” just to keep the chain going.
Hey?
And the penalty is what? Nothing?
What penalty could there possibly be? “Hate speech” is perfectly legal. The San Antonio councillors are just saying they don’t like it. Well, it’s a free country, so they don’t have to.
And the penalty is what? Nothing?
Very few in San Antonio pay any attention to the city clowncil, and even fewer could name even one member.

That’s encouraging news. When so much of government is shut down—I can’t even get in any of the town libraries around here—it’s refreshing to see that Liberal officialdom’s war on free speech is still being pursued with such enthusiasm.
Left-wing virtue-signaling tinpot dictators are why cities fail.
Proof that the concept of “hate speech” violates Natural Law and our Constitution.
How so? Nothing in the law or the constitution says people have to like what you say. It just says they can’t make laws to stop you saying it.
San Antonio is full of the La Raza Mexico over America Crowd. I loved there for 3 years in the 70’s, it was quite the eye opener…
This thread needs more East Texas Foghorn Leghorns and little red roosters crowing how great Texas is… and them damn Yankees and the War of Northern Aggression &c, &c, &c.
THATS RIGHT, I SAID IT, HOSS!
But but Ted Cruz gots hissun whiskers trimmed, top hairs done sheared and a lower wax job! /chaw spit
Jealousy will get you nowhere.
Austin is White lefty liberals, San Antonio LaRaza, Dallas old oil money RINOS, El Paso La Raza, Houston is Black NAACP
This is what Abbott has to deal with.
29 million and hardly a true Texan city among them
Fort Worth, cattle town USA, always red and conservative is becoming left and in fact voted Democrat last election as did my always red town of a measly 150,000.
We are in Deep cow manure in Texas, they wanted the business, wanted film and IT and got it, but we have paid the price…
We canceled our trade show in San Antonio this year and will not be back..The area around the Gonzalez Convention center is a gathering point for drug addicts and the homeless. Last year, the women in our group were terrified to walk back to the Hilton across the street.
Welcome to Socialist San Antonio!
My up vote doesn’t work
Personal safety has long been a concern in San Antonio because it has a higher crime rate than 98 percent of the other cities in Texas. In short, it’s a pretty dangerous place to live. But fortunately the city council has taken action to address this serious problem and has passed a resolution that will no doubt be effective in reducing crime. I feel much safer now.
However, being careful to avoid saying out loud, “Chinese Virus” may not be enough to solve the problem. Perhaps even thinking it could be just as bad. Hopefully they will consider this at a subsequent meeting.
SA is only a dangerous place to live if you’re stupid enough to go into those parts of the city that locals are smart enough to avoid – just like every other city on the planet.
Memo to the San Antonio City Council: I will use whatever language I jolly-well please to use in describing anything that comes to mind. AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!
You can say whatever you please, but you can’t make them like it. The constitution protects their right to be idiots.
So what would the San Antonio city council do if a transgendered Muslim illegal alien from Latin America shouted “Chinese flu!” while carrying a scary-looking AR-15 in a reusable shopping bag and driving a gas-guzzling SUV with an IMPEACH TRUMP bumper sticker? The resulting intersectionality paradox could cause a runaway singularity that could annihilate the known Universe!
Yikes!
The San Antonio City Council has just confessed they aren’t busy enough.
What a bunch of DUMB * U ^ K S
Many on the left promote xenophobia against caucasians, especially caucasian males. Not just in the present, but many lament the fact some indigenous peoples either did not fight hard enough against Euroean “invaders” or were at such a disadvantage that they were illegitimately conquered. I don’t specifically know the politics of the san antonio city council, but my guess is they are closely aligned with the aoc’s of the world.
actually like san antonio–prefer it to austin for sure–problems in SA certainly but much beauty as well
would not go to harris county for the second coming–have always thought of dallas as an eastern city situated in north texas
agree earlier poster–council evidently with too much time on their hands–we don’t listen much to our city council here either
Anyway, nobody goes downtown but people who work there and tourists.
San Antonio always focuses in on the most important priorities.
It’s the virus from Wuhan (formally known as SARS-CoV-2).
This must be a Planned Parody. Unless you’re a diversitist (i.e. color judgment including racist, sexist, classicist), then it’s a poor example of #HateLovesAbortion.
Once again, foreigners in American offices.
Once again, they have no understanding of the Bill of Rights.
Once again, I reflect upon secession and the attendant atomization of the United States as the right action to secure the blessings of liberty.
@San Antonio City Council … I’ll call it whatever I damn well please.
Isn’t San Antonio a religious/sexist appellation?
Poor Manny is a moron, or is that “hate speech”?
Outside of those council chambers, what is the reason why anyone should give a damn what they think about anything. That’s easy to answer, there is none. How does something like this become news?
Exactly. They are entitled to their opinion, and we are entitled to ignore them.
German measles. Guinea worm. Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. Marburg Virus Disease. Japanese Encephalitis. Spanish Flu. Lassa Fever. Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever. La Crosse Encephalitis. St. Louis Encephalitis. WUHAN FLU.
All of those were before the WHO adopted its new policy. If we actually cared what the WHO thinks, then those examples are therefore irrelevant. As of 2015 there’s a new policy, and no disease discovered since then has been named after a place.
Except that nobody put the WHO in charge of this, so its policies are irrelevant. It can call Wuhan Disease whatever it likes; none of us have to pay any attention.
We declare the City Counsel of San Antonio “unAmerican”.
Xenophobia. The Wuhan virus (formally known as SARS-CoV-2) is a native of China… and, unless you’re a diversitist who indulges liberal license to color people… persons, then there is no other implication about virus and people and jurisdiction, with the caveat that we do not know whether it is anthropogenic or merely the product of chaos (“evolution”).
Wuhan Virus! Wuhan Virus! Candy Man! Fetus… baby! Wuhan Virus! The Twilight fringe is funny. So Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic, politically congruent (“=”).
Ha! The city council doesn’t get it. They can ban whatever they want and it will not change facts/truth and peoples right to use them as they see fit.
I call a spade a spade and the Chinese flu Kung Flu.
