Never let a crisis go to waste! When the government sees an opportunity to obtain more power they take it. Thing is they will never let go once it gets that power.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi displayed that attitude today with her “Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act.”

Don’t you love the names they give their bills? You cannot vote against it because then you hate workers and families!

The bill does have a few parts that will actually help workers and families:

  • $30 billion directly provided to states to help them stabilize their funding for schools.
  • $10 billion to help alleviate the harm caused by the coronavirus on higher education institutions, while providing them with added flexibility to continue operating during the crisis.
  • The legislation also would help current borrowers with their student debt burden and GI Bill benefits.

Pelosi’s press release on the bill only highlights the parts that address those affected by the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. Even then it leaves out the parts that describe ways the government will continue to impede private businesses.

So let’s look at the pork and big government portions of the bill.

Rachel Bovard at The Conservative Partnership Institute did an excellent job outlining the material not related to coronavirus.

The bill includes a bailout for the post office. The Democrats want to force big corporations to have diversity on the corporate board. There are a few parts about voting because that fits in with this pandemic.

Don’t forget retirement plans for local journalists!

    I kind of doubt people don’t like it. The problem is that congressmen aren’t subject to recall. Under the constitution, the houses can eject a member by a 2/3 vote, but recall by voters/states isn’t provided for.

Why do states need extra money to “stabilize schools”? Their expenses are down and I KNOW I’m not getting a property tax refund any time soon because schools shut down.

Same thing here … I haven’t heard of any universities refunding tuition.

So it seems to me, this is just more money shoveled at the teachers union in specific, and the highly Dem-partisan education sector in general.

    Universities are being expected to refund room and board money that is likely already spent at this stage. Tuition will not be refunded because the semester will be finished online (no one that I know of has cancelled the semester).

    They have lower expenses but still have payrolls and much lower revenue (no dining revenue, endowment revenue is tied to the market, etc.)

    I’m not going to disagree with you on responsibility of handling money, but I wanted to address your questions from a higher ed perspective.

        Again, that’s actually untrue.

        In my state, Universities were mandated to close and go online, so no one “gave themselves” anything.

        Secondly, I don’t love administrative bloat, but they are working very hard right now to keep the infrastructure afloat and maintain lines of communication. Our university was not set up to go online (which is a problem in and of itself), so this has not been a simple transition.

      Clinton got the line item veto in 1996. He used it 82 times before the SCOTUS declared the law unconstitutional in 1998 (Clinton v. City of New York)

    Certain things can be funded through the emergency military fund but Trump was hesitant because I believe it spends from the military budget.

Its be nice to buy needed supplies before this gets worse. We haven’t seen the top yet. Makes you how many more people will get sick from going to the store once the delayed money comes in and the infection rate is higher.
This is a real instance of government delay causing people to die.

I know, I know, they don’t have the marbles.
But they should not cave in. Trump (and every other Republican leaders) should go out on TV today and plead with the American people.
They should point out what the Democrats are doing and recruit the American people to start calling their Representatives in Congress, flood the lines to express our disgust with what they are doing. This is bad, really bad.

I just left a phone message for my Congresscritter, Joe Courtney, telling him not to vote for the speaker’s pork barrel, since a) we don’t need a bill with crap in it that has nothing to do with the current crisis and b) we don’t need another bill we have to pass to find out what’s in it.

    Two thumbs up. In maybe a week, we will know if Hydroxychloroquine plus Azithromycin has therapeutic value and if the slope of the disease curve has changed at the target 15 day point. If things are acceptable and I were Trump, I would go on national TV and say that adding a Christmas tree of garbage is not what you sent me to Washington for. This has got to stop. We will re-open the country, without a bill, except in limited areas and keep your social distance. If we work together we will get through this. But we will not survive a Democratic Party that only cares about power and not about you.

This is a feint.

The D’rats know perfectly well they won’t get any of this stuff. But in politics the freebies you promise but don’t actually have to give away later are the best ones.

Now they’ll be able to claim that they were going to give all sorts of free shit to all and sundry, and but for those Repub trogodytes, we’d already be in a new socialist government nirvana. (Of course that nirvana would never arrive, but we’d have to vote for it to find out what’s not actually in it.) The goal, obviously, is to get the ducks aligned for November; they know they can’t win on the strength of the candidate, so they have to run on promises, and overdue promises are more tangible than ones which are due in some uncertain future. They won’t fool any Repubs—not even the Amybody-But-Trump types—or real Independents, but they’re after Bernie Babies. BBs are easily conned (as their wild enthusiam for “democratic socialism” shows) but their votes are still needed; cluelessness doesn’t invalidate votes.

Very cynical, even by Democrat standards, and it hinges on the Party’s desire to rule the country, even if all they’ll win is a ruin.

Side note…the Dems put nationwide ballot harvesting in the bill. Not seeing much discussion of that. Even shady 3rd world countries refuse to do that practice as it’s designed to allow fraud.
