PPP’s flash poll the night before Todd Akin’s initial deadline to withdraw showed Akin still ahead by a point. I called it a troll poll which would encourage Akin not to withdraw.
And so it did, Akin cited the poll in interviews justifying his decision not to withdraw, even as others pointed out an absurd over sampling of Republicans in the poll.

What a difference one TV interview can make. Embattled Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has now jumped to a 10-point lead over her Republican challenger, Congressman Todd Akin, in Missouri’s U.S. Senate race. Most Missouri Republicans want Akin to quit the race while most Missouri Democrats want him to stay.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the Show Me State finds McCaskill earning 48% support to Akin’s 38%. Nine percent (9%) like some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.
The questions and break down are here, and show that McCaskill remains unpopular and that people paid very close attention to Akin’s comments.

The falling over one another by the GOP with public shunning and denunciations was pathetic (the Democrats did not do that with Weiner). If privately things were said to Akin like: “Hey, this is bigger than you, tough break, but you have to take one for the team…” it would have been better.
I still think Akin should have walked away for the good of the country and for the good of pro life positions–but now it’s: Lose to McCaskillk, try to walk away after the dead line, or try to win. The latter strategy will be tough given the circumstances. 3. Even if he withdraws and even if Democrats don’t undercut the withdrawal via the courts, it’s not obvious to me from afar that MO swing voters would switch back from McCaskill.
4. As our host has pointed out, this is one of many races. While it may not necessarily be as pivotal as feared, efforts to secure Akin’s withdrawal (or a plausible write-in candidate) should continue.
And it ain’t like they lack a deep bench in Missouri, any of whom could pull this thing out.

…Just as the Akin crisis was reaching a crescendo, the Democrats on Wednesday announced that three starlets of the pro-choice movement will be featured at the convention, an event that will now drive the liberal charge that the Republicans are anti-women.
Democrats said that they will feature Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parent Action Fund, Nancy Keenan, president of the NARAL Pro-Choice America and Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University student whose plea for federal birth control funding drew the ire–and a subsequent apology–from Rush Limbaugh.
We can only pray that this report is true, and that the Democrats devote all three days in Charlotte to discussions of abortion rights, rape and contraception. If there is one thing we can say with certainty this year, it is that the overwhelming majority of voters don’t want to hear about the social issues. They want to know how we are going to climb out of the four-year economic funk that has been the Obama administration. If undecided viewers tune into the Democratic convention and hear all about abortion, and tune into the Republican convention and hear all about the economy, Romney will win in a landslide.
And, by the way, Republicans should help drive this contrast by saying nothing–and I mean, absolutely nothing–about any social issue. They should talk the economy non-stop, with occasional digressions into foreign policy. If they are asked about abortion, they should chide the reporter for asking about a topic that is of little interest to voters and that, by the way, the president, vice president, senators and congressmen have no ability to do anything about, and give an answer about the economy. If the Democrats want to define themselves to voters as the party of abortion and gay marriage, please, God, let them do so!

First off if you read the poll correctly McCaskill has hardly gained any support from the statements, Akin has simply softened. Thus there is certainly room for her to fall back again and him to rise. Obama’s Policies are simply too unpopular for her advance any further. She will need a sizable win to walk away the winner, making an Akin win more likely.

Rape is not about “stress”, you dummy!
Rape is MAJOR LEAGUE TRAUMA. And you know which one is worse than rape? Incest.
Stress due to nerves of not being able to conceive? Understandable? Stress due to bereavement or other factors? It happens.
But rape is total INVASION: unasked, un-consensual, body invasion. Whether it is with a gun pointed to the victim’s head, after adding a “jimmy” in the victim’s drink and making her/him unconscious, or even as part of domestic violence.

I think the issue people have with calling wrong but consensual sex rape, is that people view rape as an act of violence. Incest does not need to be called rape to make it seem horrible, it only dilutes the idea of rape being forced and violent. Same with child molestation, calling that rape regardless of whether it was consensual or not takes away and confuses the unique meaning of rape as a conveyer of violence. If you don’t feel incest or child molestation is adequately descriptive of how horrible those acts are (????) it also takes away the ability to combine child molestation with rape to multiply the wrongness of say “forced child molestation”, or “child rape”.

Today’s Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) still follow that commandment to a T, even after 3,500 years, and not just because the platoon commanders tell them to. My theory, and it’s pure speculation, is that Karl Rove and John Cornyn committed professional malpractice as this whole thing started breaking on Sunday.
They did not want Akin to be the candidate. Ben Smith at Buzzfeed detailed Monday how little support Akin has ever had with Republican insiders. They hate him in part because he consistently votes against Big Government Republican schemes like TARP and Medicare Part D.
Back to my conspiracy theory. When Think Progress and TPM blew the dog whistle on Sunday about Akin’s “dumb” remark, I think Rove and Cornyn saw the outrage building on the Left and thought they could leverage it to muscle Akin out by announcing early Monday their intention to withhold financial support for his candidacy. They wanted to override the will of Republican primary voters and place someone on the ballot who they believed not only stood a better chance of beating McCaskill but who would be less of a thorn in the side for the Big Government establishment agenda. To add even more pressure on Akin, I think they brought Scott Brown into the conspiracy and urged him to be the first sitting senator to denounce Akin. From the perspective of Rove and Cornyn, if the plan came together it was a win-win. Brown would look like a thought leader and strengthen his position in Massachusetts, the “weak” candidate Akin that Republican insiders don’t like would be removed and literally replaced by the choice of the establishment who make up the committee. As long as Akin complied with their coercion and stepped down, the strategists would have engineered a situation that they believed would have improved Republican chances of winning both Missouri and Massachusetts. Talk about turning a negative into a positive.
So first thing Monday morning you’ve got Rove and Cornyn denounce Akin and announcing they were pulling financial support for his candidacy and you’ve got Scott Brown who is in a very tight toss up race in a very liberal state conveniently be the first senator to throw Akin under the bus, which conveniently coincided with the presidential nominee, Romney, also denounce Akin. That gave the green light to every other Republican to do the same. Which they dutifully did. As Akin remained defiant and the plan looked to be unraveling, they got every living former Republican Missouri senator and governor to denounce Akin.
Not because Akin did anything illegal, immoral, unethical or breech the public trust in any way. He uttered one “stupid” sentence in an interview. One sentence is enough to get the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, the vice presidential candidate, several sitting senators, every former Republican senator and governor, and the entire rightsphere to coerce the man duly elected by primary voters to step down? Really? Show me where it’s ever happened before that the leadership of the party wants to overrule the will of the people and replace a candidate that has engaged in no wrong doing of any kind, whether legal, moral or ethical. I can’t decide if its outright tyranny or the electoral equivalent of prosecuting someone for a thought crime. I wonder what Nat Hentoff thinks?
Do a thought experiment. What if when Rove and Corynyn when they were plotting their strategy decided to stay silent about the “outrage” created by Think Progress, TPM, and the other lefty blogs and urged Scott Brown to say something boilerplate like, “I represent the people of Massachusetts. I do not agree with Akin’s comments and neither do most of the people of Massachusetts. This comment requires Akin to clarify it further so the people of Missouri can better understand his position.” I doubt it would have satisfied the press, but if everybody would have given a similarly pat answer, Akin’s viability may not have been nearly as compromised as it now appears to be.
I understand how a stupid sentence dropped in an interview in eastern Missouri could cause the Left generate a passionate response. That’s what Soros pays the stooges at Think Progress and Media Matters to do. I do not understand the unreal, hysterical response from Republicans for a stupid statement by an obscure Congressman who has no ethical, moral, legal lapses. I have been furious and disgusted by this mob-like Republican over-reaction.

Larry Elder has a great article out on how, although Akin’s statement was stupid, the Democrats are going to have a man accused of rape as a key note speaker at their convention. How many times was Clinton accused? Ummmmm, let me see: THREE and he paid one woman a out of court settlement of $850K to shut up and go away.

Tt was reported early Monday morning that he advised Akin the NRSC was withholding financial support for Akin’s winnable race. That’s why I singled Cornyn out.
Akin chose his words poorly. I’ve never tried to defend his statement, although late last night I provided a link in the Tip Line to a long, coherent, very reasonable and rational article defending Akin’s sentence. It deconstructs the notorious sentence and cites scientific studies to explain why the sentence is not nearly as stupid as currently assumed.
But that’s really a sideshow to me. There were lots of ways the Republicans could have responded to this controvery. They chose to attempt to use coercion to overturn the outcome of a primary election. That was a radical and irresponsile response and I am simply stunned that almost every Republican is on board with the strategy.
Almost 64% of those who votes in the Missouri primary voted for someone other than Todd Akin.
And Todd Akin is being featured on what blogs? Oh, that’s right; conservative blogs.
If conservative talking heads would STHU about Akin, the story would die.
Tell me professor, does it not bother you that the Democrats are having Jumah Day at their convention? Does it not bother you that the Democrats are giving a speaker’s platform to at least two radical, Israel-hating Islamists? Or do you think Todd Akin is still more important than the Democrats climbing into bed with those that want to destroy Israel and kill Americans?
Democrats want the issue to die, and for Akin to stay in and lose by 15 points. Republicans want him to see the light, withdraw, (and endorse Steelman).
Before the issue dies, Republicans want to be sure they have clarified their disdain for Akin. This can play to Romney’s advantage, since he establishes his position as much more moderate. When Democrats try to use Akin, the casual viewer should say “yeah, that’s the guy Republicans roundly rejected”.
Are you serious? You think the Dems want this to die? Well, let’s look at that premise, shall we?
McCaskill was losing badly to all the GOP primary candidates. ALL OF THEM, including Akin. Akin took the primary, so what better to kick McCaskill’s poll numbers back up where they should be for re-election? Why a good old fashion scandal, of course.
Once the scandal breaks, force the Republicans to take a stand. Make them opinine on that scandal. Make them cower in the corner for fear the media, and Democrats, will go after them.
Now you have all the independents in Missouri, who helped elect McCaskill in the first place don’t forget, all saying “Ummmm, even his own party doesn’t want him. I guess I’ll vote for Criminal Claire again.”
If Akin stays, and he loses, he can thank bloggers and conservative talking heads who don’t have the cajones to stand up to either the Democrats, or the press.
The only person who bears any blame here is Todd Akin. He said something that ruined his political career, damaged the pro-life cause and played into the media stereotype of Republicans as scientific illiterates. There does seem to be a silver lining here in that Democrats are being dumb enough they are going to make their convention into an abortion fest but that doesn’t mean it will help Akin.

Yes. Why would anyone want an ignorant man, with atrocious judgement, who is, by the way, arrogant beyond belief? If he somehow manages to stay, and somehow manages to win (both doubtful), what type of representation will the people of Missouri have? He has antagonized everyone in the Republican leadership. Who will work with him? He disgusts me. He is putting his own ambition over what is good for the country.

By that formula one could argue it better to vote for Hitler than Stalin. It’s a false dichotomy. “Neither” is also a choice.
The kind of “representation” that has allowed him to have a lifetime ACU voting record of 97.5 over 6 consecutive terms, making him one of the most conservative members of the entire legislature.
Oh yeah, he was re-elected with almost 65% of the vote in 2010, so the people he currently represents seem to be pretty pleased with him.
And his 2010 winning percentage in a heavily gerrymandered district that wraps around most of St. Louis is relevant in a statewide race because……?

Nobody gives a crap what Akin did prior to last Sunday, so monumentally stupid and career-killing was what he said.
Akin’s comments hurt other Republicans. He hurt other pro-life Republicans. He hurt the pro-life argument by making it sound like it is based on ignorance.
Akin’s stupidity has enabled him to do something no Republican since Reagan has done effectively: united the entire party in a principled stand, from conservatives to RINOs.

a. If Akin somehow wins, it’s because of God’s will. Give praise!

3. I suggest a compromise: we all give credit to Akin for his tenacity; Akin drops out of the Senate race to focus on his Presidential aspirations for 2016.
