Shooting suspect expected to appear in court this afternoon

Floyd Lee Corkins II, the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting at the Family Research Council, is expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon after authorities filed a criminal complaint earlier this morning.

The charges against Corkins include assault with intent to kill, as well as a federal firearms charge that he transported guns and ammunition across state lines. The federal charge carries up to 10 years in prison and the DC charge carries up to 30 years. Corkins’s car was located at the East Falls Church metro station in Virginia, about fifteen miles from Corkins’s residence in Herndon, VA.

Corkins, who had posed as an intern before shooting security guard Leo Johnson, has been held in FBI custody as they work the case in conjunction with the DC Metropolitan Police. According to the FBI affidavit, Corkins said to the security guard, “I don’t like your politics” and had 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, additional ammunition, and a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol with him at the time of the shooting.

So far the authorities have not elaborated on whether Corkins’s actions would classify as a hate crime.

Corkins has been volunteering for the past six months with the DC Center for the LGBT Community. Corkins, who received a masters degree from George Mason University in 2006 from the College of Education and Human Development, appears to have signed his name to a petition sponsored by the GMU Students for Peace regarding GMU student Tariq Khan’s arrest regarding his protest of military recruitment on campus (H/T LI reader Pablo) the arrest of Guantanamo Bay detainee Tariq Khan.

Corkins’s parents, with whom he lives, told the FBI that he has “strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner.”

The Family Research Council, a conservative, Christian, nonprofit, had been classified as a “Hate Group” by the Southern Policy Law Center.

Update: The Family Research Council will hold a press conference at 3pm eastern today.

Age 28 and still living with parents six years after grad school. While Corkins may have a masters degree from a school of Human Development he has obviously failed to develop much as a human. On Powerline they noted he was a public school teacher. Has that been confirmed?

It’s also interesting that he was using a Sig Sauer. That is one of the more expensive 9mm’s. It would surprise me that someone would buy one unless they did a lot of shopping around and knew a lot about hand guns. Strange choice of weapons for someone like this.

It’s also interesting that he clearly had no proficiency with the weapon and managed to have it taken away from him and turned on him by a wounded man. And by “interesting,” I mean “predictable.”

I wonder if he acted alone, or if he received material assistance, guidance, and/or moral support.

He probably bought the Sig at the recommendation of the salesperson who pegged him as a complete novice.

No, you’re assuming he did things the right and bought it legally, and didn’t just trade a bag of crack for it.

Sig makes an inexpensive line (P250) that is a direct competitor to Glock, and their more spendy ones (226, 228) are maybe a couple hundred more.

Either way they are all common at your typical full service gun shop and not exactly Wilson Combat level expense.

Could just as easily (and for about the same money) been a S&W, Ruger, Springfield, or Taurus.

It was an evil black ‘semi’ and he probably tried to fire it gangsta style too…

Well, it IS an Obama economy…

His excuse to the guard? “It’s not about you, I don’t like your politics.”

Sounds very similar to what that harassing jack@$$ told that poor girl at the Chick-fil-A drive-thru in Tucson.

“Nothing personal. Strictly business.” Their excuse for mayhem.

““strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner.””

Can anyone else name a group that tries to kill people whom disagree with them? (*cough* *cough* OWS, *cough* Islamic jihadists *cough*, Black Pathers *cough*)

Do you think this guy will target a Mosque next since Islam believes in killing homosexuals? Yeah, I didn’t think so either.

It’s a different Tariq Khan. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1526377/posts

But I wonder how he feels about homosexuals.

Why was it necessary to mention “15 Chick-fil-a sandwiches”?
Was he bringing them for the LGBT lunches or maybe lunch for the LGBT protesters at the local Chick-fil-a? The irony is beyond ludicrous.
And the high powered Sauer? Doesn’t compute, does it?

From the pictures, I’m guessing the 15 Chik-Fil-A sandwiches were his lunch, maybe packed for him by his mom before he left home that morning.

Also, is it just me, or does he bear a striking resemblance to Pyle from Full Metal Jacket?

Nope. His intention was clearly to sneak himself into the building, pretending to be an intern or a visitor of some sort, then hand in the sandwiches, then shoot indiscriminately. Thankfully, the security guard stopped him cold.

I worked in the DC area as a temp, a long time ago. One time, I was at a lobbying office, located right next door to The Heritage Foundation. There were many people coming in and out of that building. I really think security there was minimal. If there are any organizations that don’t have to worry about any kind of terrorist attacks, it is the non-profits, lobbyists or any other kind of NGOs.

Every Conservative organization in this country should be on the alert, right now. They need to realize they have become targets of violence coming from Leftists, who are determined to acheive their goals by any means necessary – even the shedding of blood. Pretty soon every organization like FRC, Heritage or even churches and Chick-fil-As across the country will have to conceal-carry while they perform their duties daily. Just like the ancient Israelis rebuilding the temple: tool on one hand, sword on another.

You can load an awful lot of unfairness into a handgun.

15 Chick-fil-a sandwiches? What was he planning on doing? Tossing them on the bodies like an ace of spades?

Nope. He was going to show up at the office as “the intern/visitor who brought lunch”, not the predator who was going to shoot everyone there indiscriminately.

This one here, he’s the spicy chicken!

Henry Hawkins | August 16, 2012 at 12:51 pm

The sandwich bag is a good way to hide the weapon and/or extra magazines without raising suspicions, and is also something an intern might carry, a part of his cover.

Something’s wrong here (with the CNN article). There is nothing illegal about transporting firearms across state lines, so that isn’t likely the weapons charge he is facing. Unless he’s a ‘prohibited person’, like a felon, then I can’t think of what Federal firearms statue he’d be charged with. Plenty of DC statues, sure, but Federal?

It’s perfectly legal to transport firearms and ammunition across state lines if you are engaging in lawful activities and it is stored properly. If he loaded his pistol and shoved it in his backpack, the feds can nail him under DC’s laws for improper storage during transportation.

There is when their intended use is the commission of a crime.

FRC opposes normalizing dysfunctional behavior. SPLC, ostensibly, supports this normalization. SPLC is either ignorant of reality and evolutionary principles, or it possesses ulterior motives. It either does not understand there are three categories for responding to behavior: normalize, tolerate, or reject; or it is feigning innocence in order to exploit a conflict for profit. As confused sexuality has no redeeming value to either society or humanity, there is no legitimate reason to normalize it. SPLC in its defense of behavior which constitutes evolutionary dysfunction is effectively committing human rights violations.

Midwest Rhino | August 16, 2012 at 1:13 pm

yeah, he had no legit reason to be there, so all the Chick-fil-A sandwiches would disguise him as a Christian “do gooder”, just there to support the “kill the gays” cause. So this was very premeditated, he (apparently) preferred to kill others inside, not the guard. Perhaps he had the gun hidden, and was too slow to get it out … will be interesting to hear from the guard. Two extra magazines, to retrieve after he got past the guard. So he had 46 rounds I guess.

A lot of Facebook morons spread the LGTB links around, that falsely claim FRC had supported a bill in Uganda that called for the death penalty of homosexuals. It would seem to make all those sites complicit. As far as I can tell, they claim FLC lobbied to stop Congress from protesting the bill, but they really supported the Congressional bill, but didn’t want it to have gay advocacy language.

Keep it up with the slavering screaming about “hate.” You’ll make it as close to meaningless a term as you have “racism,” and by October “HATERS!” will be just another cheap punchline used by late-night comedians.

But will Corkins ultimately be found innocent via the new legal doctrine of “justifiable hate” a la “justifiable homicide”?

I took classes at GMU in the seventies and I can tell you GMU is a totally different place now. It is an exciting place to learn and it is a vibrant and tolerant and inclusive place. Back in the seventies there were no ladies wearing hijab, the female Islamic uniform and now many ladies wear hijab at GMU. I’m horrified that a graduate of GMU shot someone to protest against an organization. Why not just bring a sign and protest in front of the building?

He shouldn’t have to worry about finding a boy friend for the next 30 years.

Just hope this fool managed to pull his pants up! The picture of him being led away suggests that he was about to be naked. Ugh…..
