Disney Announces It’s First Muslim Superhero

Disney’s soon to be released streaming service Disney+ is ramping up quickly. When the service goes live this November it’s already going to be stocked with dozens of movies, the entire series backlog of The Simpsons and the newly premiere Star Wars show The Mandalorian.

It’s also going to be the home for several of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new projects including TV shows for the Falcon, the Scarlet Witch, Loki and Hawkeye. According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s also going to play host to the MCU’s first Muslim superhero Kamala Khan.

Marvel is developing a live-action series for Disney+, its upcoming streaming service, based on its acclaimed comic Ms. Marvel, hiring British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner. Ali is a comedian who is currently a staff writer on Hulu’s remake of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The show may be announced during Friday’s Disney+ presentation. Marvel had no comment.

The show was officially announced later Friday night as part of the Disney+ Panel at the D23 Expo. Disney further expanded the scope of their plans by showing trailers for their live-action Lady and the Tramp film, announcing the release window for Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 and announced an Obi-Wan Kenobi series with returning star Ewen McGregor. The Ms. Marvel series was announced as one of three subsequent original shows for the service including She-Hulk and Moon Knight.

Kamala Khan: A Character Corrupted

I’m quite interested in the show. I’m sure there’s going to be a tizzy over it given the MCU’s gradual capitulation to progressive social norms but the core character herself never bothered me.

Her character was all about the struggle of being caught between a rock and a hard place as a secular Muslim wanting to live in American society but dealing with familial obligations in a fundamentalist Muslim family. It’s an interesting theme that was similarly explored in the 2017 Judd Apatow produced comedy The Big Sick to great effect.

What worries me though is that after its initial decent run, the comic quickly devolved into an outlet for progressive politics. Millennial identity politics, anti-bullying preaching, and social justice pandering gradually made me lose interest in the comic as the writing simultaneously declined.

Given Marvel Studio’s current movements I’m concerned the show will be more interested in those themes.

Social Justice in Marvel Movies

Like I predicted shortly after Avengers: Endgame came out, Marvel Studios is likely going to start capitulating to progressive norms due to internal and external pressure for diversity and representation. As a result, they will start pushing more social justice related themes in their stories.

We saw hints of this during the announced slate for Phase 4 which included the news that Thor: Love and Thunder would involve the controversial version of Jane Foster’s female Thor as well as a bisexual relationship for Queen Valkyrie.

I also speculated that the upcoming Disney+ series Falcon and Winter Soldier would borrow heavily from the controversial Nick Spencer run on Captain America which gave us even handed depictions of Tea-Party terrorists and a Red Skull rendition spouting Make America Great Again rhetoric.

I’m open minded to all of these series and I’m hopeful that Marvel Studio’s penchant for solid entertainment holds true into the next decade but I’m not sure Disney realizes how many fans they could alienate by embracing preachy progressive politics in their shows. If they make that mistake, they’ll learn the true meaning of the popular saying, “get woke, go broke.”

Where is the Jewish superhero who must keep Kosher, the Sabbath, etc.? Oh…

Could do that character just as easily, but for *some reason* they don’t. Jews must be portrayed according to stereotype, while much is invested in creating brand new never-observed-in-real-life stereotypes for Muslims.

One of the frustrating things when I read comic books was that all Orthodox Jewish characters were mystics who knew Kabbalah. It was crazy. Then when Steve Engelhart introduced Bernie Rosenthal to be Captain America’s girlfriend, it turned out that Bernie had a trouble-making yarmulke-wearing ex-husband who belonged to some JDL-like organization. So yes, Orthodox Jews in comic books as I remember them were stereotypes.

There is a Jewish super hero. And a real good one known to all comic book readers: The Flash.
    The Flash is Jewish.

You obviously missed the Hebrew Hammer.

No doubt the Muslim superhero will destroy Islamophobes.

There are no Muslim superheros, and there never will be any. What do you do with people who worship supervillains?

Disney+ Just another Sisney product for me not to buy.

UnCivilServant | August 27, 2019 at 10:02 pm

I have yet to see an announcement of something I want to spend my time watching, let alone my money.

Another step towards domination. another loser for the dizzney snowflakes. Ive stopped watching any of their shows, and most importantly not going to either park. Too many angry parents with no social skills. Also thta star wars stuff is crap.

So does a Muslim superhero survive after detonating the suicide vest?

The Mandalorian seems worth checking out (with a skeptical side eye).

The Ms. Marvel movie was enough of a waste to hope this cartoon dies in a fire. The entire scene has become a waste of good American lore to this altar of social justice.

I’ll find it somewhere other than paying Disney more money into its monopoly.

I wonder if she is a good Muslim. You know, one that follows the Koran and kills the apostates, homosexuals, adulterers, and blasphemers. That would be superhero who really gets into action traction in American society.

this is how it works in a communist country. it you are going to do a television show it must support the political agenda. it fact the show must have a political agenda.
making heroes out of today’s muslims is like making heroes out of Nazis and communists.

Where is her burka?! Bad muzzie!

Why isn’t she covered with a burka?

And is her kryptonite the back of her husband’s hand? Or his foot?

Gradual capitulation? Hints? I don’t think you’ve been paying attention.

This serves as a little vignette about why movies are so unappealing anymore.

Disney streaming…count me out. I’m about done with Netflix too. Not only is the content they produce themselves terrible, I can’t ever get the wife to chill with me while we’re watching either.

Evolution. The goal varies by fitness function (e.g. planned parenthood).

Progress. Monotonic change (e.g. Great Leap Forward including planned population).

Liberal. Divergent, perceived as tolerant.

Conservative. Mitigates perturbations (e.g. liberalism).

Are the nether regions mutilated? Ya know, biologicaly correct.

It will suck.

I assume the first episode begins with the character shaving with a Gillette product? PASS.

Do you think Disney knows that Muslim culture doesn’t value women or their capabilities…. me neither

Why can’t they just make entertainment without the preaching and social justice ‘wokeness’? When they do that, I’ll start going to their movies again.

What’s it going to take for Disney to figure out rabid left programming isnt winning the day.

Great news – – we can all look forward to an episode in which the hero takes on the evil, white, racist, Zionist colonial occupiers in Palestine and saves the poor, oppressed, occupied, Palestinians from the Zionist Jews.

This is part of a concerted media propaganda effort by self-congratulatory western dhimmi useful idiots to simultaneously whitewash/rehabilitate Islam of its intrinsic and odious supremacism, totalitarianism, intolerance, belligerence, Jew-hatred, Christian-hatred, Hindu-hatred, misogyny and other pathologies, while also inoculating it against legitimate criticism and scrutiny.

I can’t wait for Marvel to the religious faiths of all their superheroes! Here’s what I know so far: Superman has the strongest allegorical evidence of being an evangelical Christian. Captain America is an usher at his Conservative synagogue. Aqua-man serves on the worship team at his LDS church. Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, is very involved in the grief ministry at his Catholic parish; he also facilitates retirement seminars every other month. And Spider-Man attends a Baptist church, through the influence of his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He has worked with the kids, but his heart is with seniors and shut-ins.

Sine if you may have more info about some of the other superheroes. Feel free to chime in.

What you may not know is that Marvel comics has gone full SJW and sales are hurting as a result. So far they’ve mostly kept the infection to the pages of the comic books and out of the Marvel cinematic universe. Captain Marvel (not to be confused with Ms. Marvel) was the first to crossover. If more follow it will hurt their brand and they will inevitably blame it on superhero burnout.

Right now the brightest spot for the whole industry is 30 thousand woke librarians who will use taxpayer money to buy whatever progressive garbage they print only to be placed on a shelf and promptly forgotten about.

They won’t entirely be wrong. Brightburn, The Umbrella Academy, The Boys – we’re into the deconstruction phase, which means we’re already past peak superhero.

I think it’s the other way around – the SJW cancer that has destroyed Marvel comics is only being allowed to infect the MCU because the higher-ups (Feige) have already decided that there’s no more blood to be gotten from that stone.
