If you’ve been reading Legal Insurrection for a while, you are familiar with independent investigative journalist and Quillette editor Andy Ngo. We frequently feature his work.
Today, I am horrified and saddened to report that Ngo was attacked by antifa-fascists in Portland, Oregon.
He is, thankfully, okay, but this incident shows yet again that antifa is the exact opposite of what it claims to be.

Portland police are busy with milkshake complaints, apparently.
Police have received information that some of the milkshakes thrown today during the demonstration contained quick-drying cement. We are encouraging anyone hit with a substance today to report it to police.

As a matter of law, cops have no duty to intervene when they see a crime happening. There are several cases establishing this, including one recently in NYC when cops on a train saw someone being attacked, but chose to hide in the safety of the conductor’s cabin rather than come to his rescue. I believe that the Florida prosecutors have come up with a rather novel interpretation of child endangerment laws, saying that his refusal to act when children were relying on him and trusting him do to so led to the harm and death of those children.
If they can sell that to a jury, and I think they can, he’s gone.
I think the difference is that he was specifically assigned to protect the school, and therefore that was his duty.

Andy is an Oregon resident. Why didn’t he get a carry license (which is shall issue)? I think that evades the issue that this is the USA and you shouldn’t have to carry a weapon to do your job as a journalist.
The USA has never been crime-free, and a journalist’s job is no more important than that of a plumber or a telephone sanitizer.

I have someone saying the federal government has NO place in this matter and that even if a local or state government ordered law enforcement to stand down, there is no federal recourse. Can someone confirm that? Weren’t Andy’s civil rights violated?

If Portland is denying Ngo, or conservatives generally, the equal protection of the laws, Congress can legislate appropriately. But it doesn’t have to, and the current House will refuse to do so, so federal intervention can only happen if there’s already a law Congress has made that covers this situation. I can’t think of one, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The other alternative is for Ngo to sue Portland for denying him equal protection. He could get damages, or an order compelling compliance.
