California goes full Nuthouse in 2018 Midterms
Former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is our new Governor, and like a political Typhoid Mary, Senator Dianne Feinstein will be returning to Congress.
Today was a beautiful day in San Diego: Few clouds, 75 degree hight temperature, and light breeze.
Why do I bring this up? Because last night’s election results for the State lead me to conclude the weather is the sole aspect of this nuthouse worth touting.
First, Legal Insurrection readers may recall that the former mayor of San Francisco and current Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom pressed for universal health care that included illegal immigrants.
The good news: Newsom is now our new Governor!

Why is that the good news? Because there are reports that he has presidential ambitions, which would be bad for the rest of the nation should he be successful.
Newsom certainly strikes the look of a man who wants to be president; he was described in a recent New Yorker profile as “tall and lithe and still boyish at fifty-one, with teeth that Tom Cruise would envy and hair lacquered with Oribe gel.”
If he were to be elected, he would be the third president to hail from California but the first Democrat. California’s last two presidential contributions were Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon. Of course, if he runs in 2020 he could face stiff competition from a fellow California Democrat: U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris is widely considered to be a potential candidate.
I will simply point out that the streets of San Francisco have remained diseased throughout his time as Governor Jerry Brown’s Lieutenant Governor.

Next, voter rejected a repeal of the gas tax. I guess a majority of Californians are thrilled that Sacramento will squander more of their money.
On Tuesday, California voters opted to preserve a state tax on gasoline, deciding that funding major transit initiatives was worth more than the potential to save at the pump.
Shortly after midnight, the California Secretary of State’s early vote tallies indicated that with over 51 percent of precincts reporting Proposition 6 sputtered out with just 44.9 percent in favor, a deficit of nearly 500,000 votes.
Over/under on how many of those transit initiatives actually get funded?
Finally, the one ray of sunshine from this dismal showing: Voters approved a permanent Daylight Savings Time measure.
Voters approved Proposition 7 on Tuesday, the first step toward permanent year-round daylight saving time. The measure still requires a two-thirds vote from the Legislature and a change in federal law to take effect.
Democratic Rep. Kansen Chu of San Jose says he sponsored Proposition 7 because changing the clocks twice a year is a hassle. He says it’s also been shown to increase the risk of car accidents and heart attacks following the spring change when people lose an hour’s sleep after moving clocks forward.
At this point, I am going to sit back and enjoy all the free sunshine I can get. With Governor Gavin Newsom and the progressive voters, it will be just a matter of time before they find a way to tax it.

the gas tax lives, as do most of the bond issues. i’m amazed they actually voted one down. i’m even MORE amazed that rent control *didn’t* pass…
locally, the county tax on rainfall passed, and they apparently elected the schlub who only made LT in his decades with the LASD as Sheriff.

The “repeal” word is elitist and not known to the California masses. By voting No, many did not know that they were voting against repealing the existing gas tax.
I don’t think you can use ignorance as an excuse for voting to keep the gas tax. My coworker said she voted for it because she wants the roads fixed.
She couldn’t comprehend that we already paid the highest gas tax in the nation BEFORE the hike and that funds are fungible. The irony is that she had to have her father pay for her property tax this year because she couldn’t afford it.
The money will end up in the general fund where it will be wasted on the care and maintenance of illegal aliens, Brown’s train to nowhere and any other Leftist black hole they can think of.
Of course this is nothing compared to the disaster that Newsom will oversee. He makes Brown look like Reagan.

I don’t know anything about the guy from the LASD you’re talking about, so was he a LT or the Sheriff? Because they’re not the same thing. Making LT in the LASD is not the same as being a LT in the military, so your condescension is a bit unwarranted.
Oh, and De Leon (or to be more accurate Leon) would be much more dangerous to the Constitution than Feinstein. My family voted for Feinstein to keep Leon out of Washington. He’s as bad as Harris, if not worse.

The length of the day remains the same no matter what. The twice a year time changes are anachronistic and pointless. It causes confusion and unnecessary expense. It needs to go away.
I packed up my whole life and moved away in August. I lived i a very red part of Orange County which increasingly was turning it blue. Now I read things everyday that remind me I made the right choice.

Remember something important: I have driven in conservative states and locales and in Democrat states and locales.
Here are my experiences: The conservative states have lower gas taxes and still fix the roads pretty well.
The Democrat states have high gas taxes and the roads are not fixed or repaired well at all.
They take that money and use it for other stuff. Oh they hide the money switch really good. that they’re good at. But somehow the roads never get fixed unless they’re so bad that they have to be done for the economy OR if they’re bad and it’s a politicals route home.
Look up your political betters house locations and you will always find the roads are cleaner, well taken care of and taken care of often. That also is a fact.
And Diane’s in the same demographic as RBG.

What makes Newsom so odious is that he’s such a transparent hypocrite — born into wealth, a former restaurant owner and businessman, by all rights, he should be standing up and staunchly and unabashedly advocating for the free market, and, for low-tax, minimal-regulation, pro-business policies. Instead, he slicks his greasy hair back and promotes a Dumb-o-crat agenda that is so manifestly idiotic and destructive, it’s obvious that this guy doesn’t believe in it, and, is simply play-acting.
Yes and no. Like Steyer et al, he fully believes in socialism – for his social inferiors. However, somebody needs to run the world, and of course they can’t do that and play by the same rules they impose on the rest of us.

Once upon a time, California had a law that said that gas taxes had to be used only for roads and bridges. I believe that it was under Pat Brown (Jerry’s Dad), that they changed the law to put the gas tax into the general fund and then vote some of it out for “transportation”, which includes not only roads and bridges, but rail, buses ferry boats, bikeways, “beautification” and sound walls.
The California Department of Highways was once the premier State Highway Agency. When it became CALTRANS, it was all downhill from there.
My Dad and uncles were major freeway builders back in the fifties thru the seventies. They are gone now, but, in their day, they, like me today, have seen California destroyed by progress.
We have met the enemy and it is us.
I moved to Texas to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen here.
I will never vote for a billion dollar train to no where.
Come to Portland, we have several and plans to build another one. But they can’t announce the plans until the insiders have bought up all the property cheap, or have sold property along the announced corridor, which will then change at a later date after they have flipped the money on new land. They have to keep building them because if they didn’t, they’d have to go back and admit that the first one was a complete failure, at $20K/ft. And of course, proponents always say that it is really free because they are being paid for by Federal $$$.

Since there is no rule of law or Constitution there, it is not possible to resist politically. There are only escape or non-political resistance as alternatives. I don’t think y’all are up for non-political resistance, so escape is all that remains.

I live in MA, and I now think I can say we are no longer the most nutty “progressive” state in the country thanks to CA. We voted in favor of reducing the gas tax in 2014. The daylight savings time issue came up here for a time, and the Legislature let that die. We just had a question to require nurse/patient quotas (the inspiration for it came from none other than California) and we decidedly turned that down. We turned down Doctor Assisted suicide in 2012. The court wouldn’t allow a millionaires tax onto the ballot, and the Legislature hasn’t dared touch the income tax in years putting us in the middle of the pack for income taxes. Now if the voters could only figure out that they always vote for politicians who would do these in a heartbeat if there wasn’t a ballot question process to reverse them….
True Americans should move out of California. And New York. And New Jersey. Etc.
We will never get everyone to quit their jobs (and thereby not paying taxes), so the next best thing is for the normal people to get out of the jurisdictions run by the traitors.
The illegal alien vote is the final nail in the coffin for Californians, and it’s happening in Texas and other states, too. We need to stop fraudulent voting!
All is not lost. But we cannot save California without mobilizing the many, many Republicans (and decline-to-state voters) who have been abandoned. As horrible as it is, the only way we can offer a bold alternative to leaving the state is to work through your local Party operation in California. In LA, we have more registered Republicans than there are in 41 other states! Go to LAGOP.org and attend their 11/10 meeting.

I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you, but California is doomed. It policies have caused productive citizens and businesses to flee the state, leaving an increasingly poverty stricken welfare class behind. It has the largest disparity of wealth of any state in the Union. And, it is getting worse. Soon, it will not be able to support itself, without discriminately taxing the wealthy and then they will leave, taking that source of government revenue with them.
Remember what happene3d in NYC in the 70s? Its policies drove a lot of producing residents out, leaving an increasingly poor unemployed class of residents. In order to survive, the city had to rely upon federal bailouts and imposition of new income taxes which taxed non-residents who worked in the city.
California, that it is impossible to reverse the trend toward collapse in that state. It is only a matter of time.
Read Victor Davis Hanson’s descriptions of what has happened to interior California. He’s a Fellow at Stanford but he lives on and works the land his family has owned for generations. It’s pretty grim stuff.
We’re as conservative as they come, but we voted for Feinstein just to keep that Marxist vermin De Leon unemployed. He’s responsible for many of the unconstitutional gun laws in this state despite the fact that he isn’t sure which end the bullet comes out of. He has the same thorough understanding of our Constitution. It was a true Hobson’s choice.
