Anti-Trump Activists Want DC Trump Hotel’s Liquor License Revoked

Destroying the Trump presidency extends to attacking his businesses

The #Resistance isn’t content with its “impeach Trump” efforts, its Russia investigation, its marches, boycotts, and pussy hats.  Some of them are targeting President Trump’s business efforts as a means of political retribution.

The latest of these efforts took place in Washington DC where a “group of civic and religious leaders” banded together to press the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration there to revoke the Trump International Hotel’s liquor license.  The group, laughably calling themselves “Make Integrity Great Again,” asserted that he doesn’t pass the “good character” test.

The alcohol board declined to review the complaint and told them they could resubmit their concerns when the license is up for renewal in March of next year.  This decision is being challenged, with the group of “residents” insisting that it be reviewed immediately.

Politico reported earlier this week:

Donald Trump is president, but is he fit to run a bar?

A Washington, D.C., liquor board will consider that question Wednesday after a group of city residents complained that the owner of the Trump International Hotel fails the “good character” test required of anyone who wants to sell wine, beer or spirits in the city.
In their grievance to the city’s Alcohol Beverage Control Board, the group presented a litany of what they say are Trump’s moral failures, calling him a liar, a fraudster and a racist who associates with criminals.

. . . . Yanking the hotel’s liquor license would put a serious dent in its events business, including weddings and fundraisers. The hotel’s steakhouse, BLT Prime, and the lobby’s popular Benjamin Bar and Lounge — mocked by locals for serving wine by the spoonful — operate under a separate license that isn’t targeted by the current complaint. But both could be hit if the case goes forward, because they, like the hotel, have liquor licenses held by Trump Old Post Office LLC, which in turn is owned by the president.

. . . . The control board has cited character flaws to deny liquor licenses in the past, including to applicants who have lied to investigators, misrepresented their finances or had run-ins with the law. But while it has sought to revoke licenses for violations such as serving underage customers, running the taps after hours and shoddy record-keeping, it’s unusual for the board to investigate an existing license on the basis of character.

The board chose not to break precedent in this case and refused the group’s request for a “show cause” hearing.  Instead, they said that the group can make its complaints known at the usual time, when the license if up for renewal.  This will be in March of 2019.

The Washingtonian reports:

DC’s liquor board has temporarily kneecapped efforts to overturn Trump International Hotel’s liquor license. During a public hearing on Wednesday afternoon, the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration announced that the renovated Old Post Office will maintain its ability to serve alcoholic beverages to patrons—for now.

. . . . Board chairman Donovan Anderson says that the board will not hold a “show cause” hearing to hear arguments regarding the revocation of the hotel’s license.

. . . .  Anderson noted that it’s uncommon to call for such a hearing after the period to apply for or renew a liquor license passes, adding that the hotel—and any other license holding establishment, for that matter—must apply for renewal by March 2019. At that time, new complaints can be brought forward.

Yet the complainants refuse to wait around.

“We’ll be filing a submission to the board demanding they look at the statue as a whole and reconsider their decision,” attorney Joshua A. Levy says. A letter, which will likely be submitted in the next few business days, will urge the board to re-review allegations made against Trump.

Why not reconvene in March? “The facts are so compelling right now that the board has a duty to act now,” Levy says. “This is an individual who has demonstrated, in public, hundreds of pages of evidence of bad character. When that happens, whether it’s the President or anyone else, as a duty to community…the board should act now.”

The New York Times reports that the board’s decision was unanimous and notes that “the activists . . . were targeting one of the hotel’s most profitable areas.”

This won’t be the last time such “activists” target President Trump’s business empire.  If they can’t beat him honestly, in the voting booth, they’ll seek political retribution by “targeting” his businesses.  So much for integrity.

No, in March their complaints will be heard, and there is good reason to expect that they will be taken seriously. Trump isn’t of good character. Even his defenders usually admit that. And others with the same flaws are often denied a license, so why should he be granted one?

It makes sense that the board refused to hear the complaints now, because none of the complaints are new. Everything bad about Trump was well known when the license was last renewed, so why didn’t these people bring it up then? The answer is only that they weren’t interested then, and their new-found interest is not a sufficient reason to reopen the case, when nobody else has ever been treated that way.

Arminius in reply to Milhouse. | September 16, 2018 at 3:02 pm

The bottom line is that the complaint is frivolous. They’ve had a liquor license since the place opened in 2016 apparently with no violations. If there had been, and these idiots would have put that in the complaint. At this point, violations are the only grounds for the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration to deny the hotel its license when it comes up for renewal. Because that demonstrates sufficient character to operate a bar.

One solution that would kneecap these idiots would be to contract bar operations to an outside firm. That’s typical in hotel operations. Then the license would be in the contractor’s name. Trump’s holding company would still get its cut of the profits.

Of course, then these protesters would say that the contractor doesn’t meet the “good character” requirements because they have a business relationship with the fraudster and racist who associates with criminals. But that would demonstrate the blatant political aspect of this travesty.

That is not true. When it comes up for renewal, Trump’s character will be a legitimate topic for questioning. A person of bad character is not eligible for a license no matter how well he runs the bar.

So, what you’re saying is that you have never ran a business that had a liquor license and are now talking out of your @$$.

Leftists cannot live and let live. They are the most tyrannical clowns on earth, I cannot imagine what these jerks are going to do when they get back in power.

The Right has the same problem. Here is why.

Utter nonsense. I used to be on the left a long time ago. The reason I left the left is because they lie about what they really want to do, which is to rule over people with an iron fist. That’s a big difference over wanting to follow the rule of law, which also includes the proposition that if you don’t like the law you change the law by proper persuasion and elections vs. shoving some new edict down everyone’s throat.

Did you read the articles and the articles linked?

If so we can have an intelligent discussion of the matter.

The researcher I linked to in the “Thermodynamic” article makes some very good points.

There are two ecologies. (Just look at a Red/Blue map) and the rules are different.

Socialism is an outgrowth of city ecology.

Jeeze. It is referred to in the Bible. The wickedness of cities. Jesus was all about returning Jerusalem to country morality (the original Jewish morality). They started out as nomads remember?

Cities are left (and centralized control) every single time.

The country is more liberty oriented.

          Did you ever wonder why?

BTW I used to be on the left as well. But I have studied ecological energy flows and how that affects the “rules” animals live by.

Look up – ecology energy flow – there are a lot of articles and books. I read one in the 70s that got me started. If I find the link I will leave it here.

Colonel Travis in reply to MSimon. | September 15, 2018 at 7:39 pm

Yes, I did read them. Your argument that “The Right has the same problem” as the left is, first, flat-out wrong. Second, let’s assume it wasn’t wrong – discussing the differences between urban/suburban/rural populations, which I understand and agree with, doesn’t even back up the premise that the right has the same problems of governance as the left.

Returning Jerusalem to the original Jewish morality? No, Jesus is all about redeeming the incurably wicked creature known as man. Cities are where evil was concentrated due to the presence of large amounts of people but ALL people are wicked. That is made quite clear in both the Old and New Testaments.

Milhouse in reply to MSimon. | September 16, 2018 at 10:28 am

The NT perhaps, but not the OT. The OT teaches that every person is created pure, wild and untrained and with an inclination to do bad things but with a clean slate, is responsible only for his own mistakes, and can cure them with true repentance. Cain, the original sinner, was told “If you improve you will be forgiven, but if you do not improve then your sin lies in wait for you at the grave; it seeks you out, but you can dominate it.”

“Jeeze. It is referred to in the Bible. The wickedness of cities.”

Interesting comment – there is something decidedly parasitic about living in cities. My faith views have changed a lot over the years, including my view of God’s reason for destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. I once believed it was solely for the cause of homosexuality, until I read that the Jews, who wrote the OT, commonly teach/believe that the destruction had more to do with the cause of just government. Specifically, there was a government in place but they did nothing to stop the gangs roaming the streets, going house to house and dragging people out of their homes to satisfy their lusts. The innocent were moved out of harms reach and the wicked were destroyed for the cause of lawlessness. That certainly impresses me as relevant in big cities today.

Sorry Milhouse, but I believe you are mistaken.

Also notice that God never cures a heart but gives you a new heart

          Jeremiah 24:7
‘I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the LORD; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

          Ezekiel 11:19
“And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,

Mankind is desperately wicked. Ever notice you don’t need to teach a child to lie? But you do need to teach him how to share? The most innocent time of life, and yet we have to work hard just to get them to be nice…

The city v. country divide is certainly interesting. The liberty and freedom of the country against the homogeneity of the city is indeed an age-old problem. The city, in this construct, is irony personified: “city folk” are sophisticated, joyous in their role as tax-paying, all-but-voiceless cogs in a wheel they will never see from above ground-level (from where they are permitted to fix and oil the wheel, not ride in the glorious gilded carriage reserved for those intent on equality and everyone paying their fair share).

Me? I’ll take the country every day of every week and leave for others the lock-step puppets riding the poverty train, those who aren’t clever enough to see how they are manipulated and used by the winners in every true socialist/commie society: the ruling (political) class.

Key words associated with communism and socialism? Bribes, favors, connections, waiting lists, poverty, famine, and genocide and death (usually in the tens of millions).

      No thanks.

        Yes.

With so many rules corruption is the only way cities work.

But they also need rules (sanitation among others) or they don’t work.

Me? I’m fairly libertarian and have come to the conclusion that leaving each other alone is the only way we can make this work.

As America gets more urbanized it will be going further left. It is inherent in our political structure.

We need to completely remake our political structure to make things work down the road. Cities need to be their own States. So they can’t rule over country people. And vice versa.

Thanks for your thoughts, MSimon. The city/country divide as shown on the red/blue maps is indeed telling of the tendency for metro-liberalism vs. rural-conservatism. I’ve read a few articles in the last 10 years that advocate promoting large urban cities to independent states, subject to the Feds only for interconnecting infrastructure defense, etc. Since they would not be governed by the Fed, they would not vote in national elections. Anyway, it was food for thought and seemingly put an end to most of the battles between left and right.

I’m not so sure that city or country dictates individual political ideals as much as the basic need to adapt and survive. As far as I know, I’ve always leaned conservative – for me it’s a product of faith and the values I was raised with. I’m a creator, builder, giver, independent and private, etc., and those traits seem a better fit for conservatism than liberalism. All the years I lived in the suburbs of Seattle and worked in aerospace, I voted conservative all the while longing to get the hell out of the rat-race that was the city and back to the country. But I was trapped there – marriage – kids – mortgage, etc. Not until retirement was I able to flee the suburbs and move rural.

Even now I watch with dismay as the once conservative rural area I now live, becomes more liberal bit by bit … city planners bring in big box stores, gov’t annexes former county areas, rising property taxes to play for school-consolidation into city schools, silly and restrictive water and septic regulations with mandatory annual inspections, etc. And so my inner conservative nature sees the erosion of my community into a restrictive and intrusive liberal morass and I feel the urge to flee once again – eyeing that red and blue map for my independent, quiet and private utopia.

I would like to see the large metro areas carved out of the national election landscape. Telling them that they’re on their own would solve a lot of political turmoil for the rest of us.

Guess I didn’t quite wrap up my thought above … even though living in the city was difficult (close quarters) and there was temptation to go liberal to survive the high-cost of city life, I resisted the temptation to vote/go liberal because it was just contrary to my independent / conservative nature. I dealt with it all by escaping the city as often as I could afford. Vacations were always to far-away places – the mountains, a remote beach, etc. I would not be at all surprised to learn that many city-dwellers who vote liberal, do so to survive there, not because they are liberal idealists.

One final thought … I’m a recording song-writer and frequent music forums. If those forums are any indicator, most musicians are liberals. One forum had an active political discussion group and I posted a link for a “political compass” test. It measured the social and fiscal aspects of liberalism and conservatism. Nearly everyone who took the test came up “Libertarian” – tending toward social liberalism and fiscal conservatism. I take that to mean “do what you want, but pay for it yourself (don’t make me pay for it/leave me alone)”.

A knowledge of the two ecologies would help both the left and the right get along better.

We would understand that the “morality” of the other group is based on their ecology. And not some inherent morality. There are very few rules that work in both places. And we know what they are. Murder, theft, fraud. And that is about it.

Each group is adapted to their environment.

Trump bridges the divide. We don’t often get Presidents who understand in their bones the two ecologies.

BTW it is noted almost every where in political science that most men WANT to be ruled (derisively referred to as “sheep”). If we don’t take that into account we will fail.

Arminius in reply to MSimon. | September 16, 2018 at 3:27 pm

You’re kidding, right? The post-modern neo-Marxist left that doesn’t believe in biology, that there is no such thing as human nature, that there is no such thing as objective truth, is going to be influenced by knowledge of the “two ecologies?” In other words they believe everything the old Marxists believed. That the only thing that that is real, the only thing that matters, is power. They’re out wrest power away from the “oppressors.” And if they can do that they can mold human beings like clay. But they need to hide their intentions.

They’re out to create the “New Soviet Man” and they’re lying about it by using different terminology. They’re totalitarians, and you can”t get along with totalitarians.

Ask the Kulaks how well that “two ecologies” stuff worked out for them.

      Another moronic analysis.

Almost as many conservatives live in cities as useful idiots: they’re just outnumbered.

Your ‘country bumbkin’ theory is a startling admission of your narcissism and your ignorance.

Have these idiots gone past the point where nobody takes their claims seriously?

“…he doesn’t pass the “good character” test.”

That’s so quaint, it’s laughable. Pass the popcorn.

    DieJustAsHappy in reply to locomotivebreath1901. | September 15, 2018 at 4:58 pm

Considering who some of them most likely voted for mayor of D.C., it is a belly-roll laugh.

Good character is not a requirement for elected office, or Trump could never have passed in the first place. But it is a requirement for a liquor license.

Arminius in reply to Milhouse. | September 16, 2018 at 3:54 pm

And now the the Trump Hotel has been in operation for years with a liquor license and has no violations, then that demonstrates that he has “good character and is sufficiently fit for licensure.” The board could deny the hotel a new liquor license but only if these clowns can prove that Trump’s character flaws meant he shouldn’t have gotten the license in the first place. For instance, they say he’s a fraudster and a liar. In order to demonstrate that they have to pove he committed fraud when getting the lease from the GAO. Did he lie to the board when applying for a license? They say he’s a racist. Has anybody complain that Trump discriminated against them by denying them service in one of the hotels bars and restaurants, or refused them a room out of racial animus? They say he hangs out with criminals. Guilt by association isn’t sufficient to deny him a license; the only question for these regulators is, does Trump have any arrests and/or convictions that he should have revealed?

These grandstanding protesters can be as hysterical in public as they want to be. Remember the “howl at the sky” protests? This is just another iteration of that. But the D.C. alcohol board members can’t. They’ll be on awfully thin ice legally if they deny Trump’s hotel a liquor license for supposed character flaws that have nothing to do with operating a hotel, and haven’t manifested themselves in the liquor license application process nor in beverage service violations. The protesters can act in an arbitrary and capricious manner but the board can’t. Moreover, do you actually think that Washington D.C. wants to lose the tax revenue from the hotel? Or kill investment? A lot of entrepreneurs are going to be following this closely to see if D.C. will kill businesses as soon as a mob of screaming harpies decide you aren’t leftist enough. Like, by maybe serving a cabinet member. Politics is one thing, money is another.

The word “activists” in this context is disingenuous. This action is rooted in inappropriate malice. I can think of a word that starts with “a” that is appropriate, but it is considered too crude for writing in this location.

A word. We need a word for people who pursue frivolous legal actions in pursuit of petty political revenge and publicity.

They try to criminalize political differences, it is scary as hell.

It worked for the Communists and National Socialists.

Are you kidding? It is done all the time in America.

Look, we understood we couldn’t make it illegal to be young or poor or black in the United States, but we could criminalize their common pleasure. We understood that drugs were not the health problem we were making them out to be, but it was such a perfect issue…that we couldn’t resist it.” – John Ehrlichman, White House counsel to President Nixon on the rationale of the War on Drugs.

And no one thinks twice. That Ehrlichman quote has been out there for 20 or 30 year. I don’t see Republicans clamoring to fix it.

The Democrats are no better. As you well know.

I don’t think historical quotes make a great argument for “all of the time”.

But you just made a decent case for limiting the stretch and power of government so that these ends cannot be pursued by any political bad actors. Thanks for that.

I’m a Republican libertarian. Milton Friedman branch. What else would you expect?

One of my favorites from Milty. Drug Prohibition is socialism for criminals. Says Milton Friedman. (that is a paraphrase)

BTW there are lots of other examples. Nixon and the IRS. Obama and the IRS. The EPA. The list is very long. I just gave two obvious examples from a subject I’m very familiar with.

Evidently libertarian thought is not too popular on a nominally libertarian blog. LOL.

Colonel Travis in reply to MSimon. | September 15, 2018 at 7:59 pm

You bring up the favorite subject of a libertarian, drug use, and make a case that criminalization of political differences happens all the time (e.g., see war on drugs)? Nonsense. Opiate regulations were around by time of the Civil War. There were no regulations before that because opium didn’t exist in America to any measurable degree until Chinese immigrants brought it here. Ever since, one could make the argument that there has been a war on drugs, which is another way of saying, there was no war on drugs before the war on drugs because there were no drugs to declare war on. Your analogy doesn’t work.

The (D) party wanted Reagan in jail for political differences.
The (D) party wanted Bush in jail for political differences.
The (D) party wants Trump in jail for political differences.

If you cannot understand how the left tries to find crimes to match the man, how this is universal to the left no matter the country, and how this has been a trademark of leftism since they’ve come to power, and how that phenomenon has nothing to do with behavior that has been criminalized to one degree or another for almost two centuries since that behavior’s introduction to the country, that ain’t my fault.

The Harrison Narcotics act was opposed by the Republicans of the day. They claimed the Federal Government didn’t have the power.

If you hang out at Conservative blogs these days they totally embrace it. Except for a few odd balls like me.

          You may have forgotten this:

The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types — the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution. — G.K. Chesterton

So Republicans have a pattern of operation and the pattern is not just today. It is historical.

Simon tries to turn every thread into Pot Legalization. I’m sick of it.

Ever had that friend who just couldn’t get over a breakup and wouldn’t shut up about whoever ditched them?

Fen: Hey guys I got tickets for Yankee game! Come with!

Simon: Baseball… Hotdog vendors… Mustard… Samantha and I were playing Clue and she kept giggling whenever I asked about Colonel Mustard in the Kitchen. I should have seen it then waaaah sob sob

Guys: Oh god, here we go again…

JFC, Simon. The Harisson Narcotics Act of FRIGGING 1914? R U kidding me? R U really this dense.

I’d be all for opposing the Harrison Narcotics Act as long as I could eliminate the welfare state which didn’t exist in 1914. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose. Drug addicts are swinging their fists and hitting me squarely on the nose because I have to support these derelicts through my taxes. Which also didn’t exist in 1914.

I don’t see you arguing for the elimination of the welfare state. Just the elimination of the war on drugs. This is a thoroughly unserious, indeed laughable, position. “People are free to do drugs, but OBTW society has to support those who have made themselves totally dysfunctional because of their drug use.”

Pick one. You can’t have both.

        “It happens all the time.”

Maybe: if you include Odumbo, and the likes of Anita “Mao” Dunn, Van “Communist” Jones, loretta lynch, eric holder, hillary klinton, lois “IRS” lerner, james “crooked cop” comey, john “genocide” holdren and the like in the argument.

Another moronic argument. How do you do it?

Humphrey's Executor | September 15, 2018 at 5:02 pm

Hopefully the hearing in March will include some testimonials from employees who make a good living working in an upscale Hotel.

Trump Derangement Syndrome, it’s spreading.

Is Donald Trump there personally slinging the appletinis and ales? Are all the bartenders of sterling moral character? Are they planning an investigation of every restaurant owner who has a liquor license in D.C.? Pathetic and nasty.

Appletinis? I want one now. 🙂

It doesn’t matter who’s serving the drinks. Bartenders are not licensed and are not required to be of good character. Owners are so required, and yes, this is enforced regularly. There is no reason it should not be enforced against Trump, when the time comes. There’s a reason licenses come up for renewal periodically.

Arminius in reply to Milhouse. | September 17, 2018 at 2:47 pm

Yes, there’s a reason. Has the license holder done something SINCE he/she originally received the license or the last renewal such as getting a DUI or violating code and getting violated by the Alchoholic Beverage Control board too many times. None of the accusations in this BS attempt to strip Trump of his liquor license touch on any of the reasons why liquor licenses come up for renewal. Their complaint is that Trump was elected President and isn’t a leftist.

You wear a thin veneer of reasonableness, Milhouse. But mostly you are full of s**t. How many businesses have you run that required a liquor license? Brendan Eich was fired from Mozilla for contributing $1000 to the prop 8 campaign in Kali, which was if you don’t remember defined marriage as only between a man and a woman. Leftists would argue that demonstrated bad character, therefore he can’t have a liquor license or own a bar. This frivolous accusation is no different. The “activists” hate Trump for becoming President and doing what he promised to do. This has nothing to do with whether or not he’s fit to hold a liquor license. The fact that none of the Trump hotels (not just he one in Washington) have had a license revoked (as far as I know, as it would be big news if one had) is proof that he has sufficient character and is fit for licensure.

Leftist activists can screech loudly and incoherently that that someone should be run out of business over political differences. But regulatory bodies like the D.C. alcohol board can not act on such impulses. It’s illegal.

If you hallucinate that this is a serious problem for Trump, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Let me clarify; it is a large problem for Trump but not for reasons the protesters or you have stated, as the protesters have no legal leg to stand on. How many decades has it been since the first Trump hotel opened? And in all that time his fitness for a liquor license has never been questioned. He becomes President and all of a sudden his character is in question. Earlier I suggested that a way to avoid this would be that the Trump holdings LLC should simply contract out restaurant and bar operations. But anyone who would take the contract would also be hounded out of business by the howling harpies.

If we let them. If we let them then it’s a huge problem for all of us.

It’s important for the right to toughen up. Democrats have gone off the rails and are no longer even pretending to fight fair. Anyone giving them the benefit of the doubt at this point is a useful idiot, and is part of the problem.

They are all nucking futs. Their minimalist brains must be rattling in their skulls like a handful of marbles in a shoe box.

“The media won’t give Trump credit for the economy but they will blame him for a hurricane. You can’t make this stuff up.”

More articles about kneecapping liberal troublemakers, please.

Leftists show their cards way too early when they try to corruptly use the state to punish their political adversaries.

Trump has demonstrated lots of great character by defeating the Progressive Fascists at every turn and by exposing their fascist insanity.
