Survey: Heading into midterms, Dems more worried, frustrated, angry and depressed

Survey: Heading into midterms, Dems more worried, frustrated, angry and depressed

Still not over 2016

For those of us filled with dread, there’s some comforting news in a Morning Consult poll released today.

Some of the findings are pretty obvious, such as Donald Trump being the biggest “issue” for voters of both parties:

President Donald Trump is revered by Republicans and detested by Democrats — and what congressional candidates think of the president is more important than nearly every policy issue polled, including security and health care, for both Republicans and Democrats in the third edition of Morning Consult’s State of the Parties survey.

Twenty-two percent of Republican voters said a candidate’s support for the president was the top issue on their minds when casting ballots for House and Senate candidates, while 21 percent of Democrats said opposing Trump was most important.

What’s most interesting about the chart above is what’s NOT on the list: Russia.

One other chart, though, was my feel good story of the day (yellow highlighting added):

https://morningconsult.com/2018/07/23/democrats-anger-may-retake-the-house/

Democrats are far more worried, frustrated, angry and depressed than Republicans, and feel much more helpless.

With the GOP in control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, most of the party’s voters are feeling confident (61 percent), proud (56 percent) and happy (52 percent), according to Morning Consult surveys of registered voters from each party.

Democrats were far more likely to express emotions that reflect their time spent out of power. Most of them are worried (61 percent) or frustrated (58 percent) — and more importantly, some political scientists say, they’re significantly angrier than their GOP counterparts….

… in general, GOP voters erred on the side of positivity while Democrats were comparatively gloomy. Sixty-three percent of GOP voters listed positive emotions such as “confident” and “interested” to describe their feelings, compared with 45 percent of Democrats who did the same. Democrats were also almost twice as likely as Republicans, 44 percent vs. 24 percent, to express a negative sentiment, such as “worried” or “frustrated.”

Morning Consult reads into this that Democrats may be more motivated to vote. That makes sense, but still … feelings of helplessness could temper that enthusiasm, as might an increasing feeling among Democrats that the Democratic Party is heading in the wrong direction:

https://morningconsult.com/2018/07/23/what-democrats-and-republicans-are-prioritizing-ahead-of-the-midterms/

Would it be wrong for me to take satisfaction knowing that Democrats are suffering from feelings of helplessness, depression and anger? Yes, of course it would be wrong. I’m *better* than that.

It’s not like I have watched hundreds of hours of election night “Hillary Supporters Melt Down” videos.

Or put on autoplay videos of the wrong predictions and election night countdown:

“Nope. Not me”

Agreed. We must set an example.

Like, we wouldn’t use alter-egos on Dem Underground, HuffPo and Vox to spread the theory that the #Resistance is a really just a Russian Psy Op funded by Putin to generate sympathy for Trump and immunize him against legitimate criticism.

Because that would be cruel.

It must be hard to have confidence in a party that brings you Mad Max, Fauxcahontas, Crazy Eyes Cortez, Barney Googley-eyes Schiff, Too Much Botoxed Pelosi, and the ever Sour Puss Schumer as your headliners. While they wait for Em Peach foe Dee Fie through Herr Mueller and over a year later still nothing…

Meanwhile Trump is getting things done far better than during the Obama years, no more apology tours, no more being lectured about who we are, and seeing the left lurch even further left away from the moderates, while they call for ICE to be abolished and open borders and free stuff paid for by the taxpayers, and tax hikes.

Bless their hearts. Heh.

Why, thank you, Professor, for serving up these videos. I’ve been meaning to catch up on them all summer!

I have started telling democrats that if they are so upset, worried and anxious that they cannot function, the solution is simple. It’s called suicide. I tell them: “Be strong, like the Okinawa woman who was so afraid of a world run by Americans that she took her children and jumped off a cliff. Gather up your courage (and your family) and run out in front of a moving bus. All of your fears and anxieties will be gone, and you will be at peace. And the world will be a better place for the rest of us.” Do you think I am being excessively cruel?

re: “Survey: Heading into midterms, Dems more worried, frustrated, angry and depressed”

My only thoughts are: Good! Can we push them far enough to become suicidal?

The ones left over might be whole enough to become patriots, and we can always fill the sanitariums with those left over…just as long as they don’t transform into RINO’s. America has more than enough RINO’s.

This really never does get old !

I know we are not supposed to delight in the suffering of others but it’s very hard not to smile at those clips. A true snowflake melting moment.

It is well that our sins can be forgiven, for there is hope for me. I’m just gonna have to work reallyreally hard on sincere repentance…

I am loathe to call for institutionalizing these people, because of the historical example of the Soviets declaring political enemies insane so they could be disappeared into the gulags.

But so many Democrats appear to be functionally insane, ie they maintain their mental illness with medication just enough to function inside the borders of society.

I think if we had a better mental health infrastructure, they would be screaming at us from inside the asylums.

What to do, what to do…

Consider for just a moment if the economy really DID collapse; what would one of the major outcomes be?

All these people on mental health meds would be CUT OFF due to the unavailability of the medications, forget about not being able to pay for them. You can’t pay for something that’s not even being produced or shipped. Liberals insane…much?

AND, it’s not just the Liberals that are going to be desperate… Think of all the snowflakes living in the parents basement whose only skill is cooking Top Ramen and sleeping until 10am every morning. Now is a good time to hone those Zombie fighting skills you acquired in college!

Cannabis is a cheap anti-depressant. If there was more around liberals might be less troublesome.

The problem is it suspends the journey through the stages of grief. A chronic user who would normally on Day 45 of deals ng with Problem X “tunes out” from reality and when he resurfaces Day 12 is still their waiting on him. There are no shortcuts. Escape only pauses the clock.

And then there is the rage. Yin-Yang, equal and opposite reaction. Creates a seesawing of emotional well-being. Induced bliss gives momentum to a pendulum, the farther you pull it towards Bliss, the farther it swings back in the other direction as it rebalances. I speak from (cough) experience.

Just witness the Antifa fascists or the SJW meltdowns. Most of them already smoke weed and have a good network of suppliers. Do they seem peaceful?

Fen in reply to Fen. | July 24, 2018 at 10:46 am

Geez I need an editor… But for “reasons” I just can’t muster the motivation to start interviews. 😉

I do think legalization is a good political move. But I also think it’s bad for society in general. Inviting Darwin to the table to pick off or handicap those who indulge

(Readers nod along: “uhn case in point, Fen”)

Fen in reply to Fen. | July 24, 2018 at 10:53 am

I’m just sayin. In an alternate timeline I took over my father’s law firm, clerked for Scalia, and was on the short list to replace Ginsburg.

But in this one, I just impose on Professor Jacobson to aimlessly ramble on his blog.

And now my lighter is dead. Decisions… bath or nap?

Do you want them out on election day voting or would you prefer they stay home? I’m not interested in their grief – except to cause more.

If I was running Republican campaigns I’d get as many of these moral issues off the table as possible.

If Democrats weren’t motivated by weed or abortion a lot of them would stay home.

I do like strong conservative values.

“Government SAVE us. We are being attacked by plants.”

Hey, I’m not joshing when I blame it on the XIX Amendment. A bad idea then, and an even worse one now.

      Milhouse in reply to tom_swift. | July 24, 2018 at 2:09 am

That’s indefensible. If you want to blame something, blame the 24th amendment, and the Voting Rights Act. The 23rd & 26th were probably also not such great ideas.

        tom_swift in reply to Milhouse. | July 24, 2018 at 3:43 am

Nope. Those are radically different problems, to the slight extent that they may actually be problems at all. The 19th is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of human nature, one every bit as egregious as the basic precepts of Marxism. It imposes a polity antithetical to that assumed—and fought for—by the writers of America’s founding documents; a “modern” polity which cannot work.

Orwell described the future, and after 1920 that future became inevitable. It’s just a matter of time.

Milwaukee in reply to Milhouse. | July 24, 2018 at 6:14 pm

Being tedious and pedantic is indefensible. Calling something indefensible without explaining why, is indefensible. Women’s suffrage is something we just must live with.

Did you miss this one? 5-ugly-truths-about-women-that-young-men-need-to-recognize? Reason #4 is, and I quote:
/i>”4. Women are not as stable as men
There are exceptions to every rule, but the most stable woman is as emotional as an unstable guy. Women are more emotional, more hormonal than men. Women are, at best, more tolerant of drama than men and at worst, they seek it out. They will become upset for no good reason, act irrationally, and are more prone to things like anxiety than men. The point of this is not “women are unstable and bad,” it’s that women are very different in this area and you need to be ready to deal with it. At times there’s going to be crying, no matter what you do. At times, your girlfriend / lover / wife is going to become angry at you even though you’ve done nothing wrong. Wise men learn that there are times to ignore things women say rather than get in a fight because ten minutes later, their mood will improve. To men who aren’t used to it, all of this can be freaky, but it can also help keep things fresh and exciting once you learn to navigate it.”

Didn’t progressives, who wanted the 19th, to get states to hold non binding referendums, which were used to pressure legislatures into passing the amendment?

Milhouse in reply to Milwaukee. | July 25, 2018 at 3:09 am

Restricting the franchise to men is exactly as indefensible as restricting it to white people; no explanation is needed, and it’s offensive to even demand one.

I think that any society which wastes half of their intellectual capital is not going to perform well. One example of this was Gertrude Elion, whom I greatly enjoyed.

    Humiliate them.

    Its a lot if fun

Survey: Heading into midterms, Dems more worried, frustrated, angry and depressed

Just “more” worried, frustrated, angry and depressed?

Sounds like there’s still some room for improvement! Let’s go for “totally”!

* SIGH * … I love reruns

In a word the dems are SHATTERED!

Professor: You missed one:

I really think the current mass hysteria may presage the fracturing and demise of the democratic party.

If Trump can succeed in pulling in a significant percentage of the black and Latino vote–and I think he will–he will remove the glue that holds the leftist coalition of actually pretty diverse interest groups apart, and we will see the formation of a far left socialist party that will permanently split the left.

And Independents?

I’m registered as an Independent. Seriously and stop making that face.

Related, and a good read:

“They’re lost. Almost everyone is traveling to a location they cannot name, but they seem hell bent to get to. Every milepost, sign, and touchstone that formerly directed their travel through life has been defaced or destroyed by vandals. They have map books that consist solely of dead ends on other planets. They started off edgy but by now they’re entirely unglued.”

If done as “Independent” you give yourself the luxury of recalibrating.
But as member of society of “Group Thinkers” the Liberals moving ever, ever left are now like the Buffalo running amok in a stampede without benefit of a leader to turn them around nor the ability to stop themselves even though the fear or perceived threat derives from a non-threatening life ending occurrence.
Perhaps Sen. Warren with her insight to how the herd moves can save them from running over the cliff. If not she can with her Indian heritage teach then how to yell..GERONIMO!!

Immigration, legal or otherwise, not a ‘Voting Issue’?

I love the election night meltdown compilation every time I feel down it is my first go to/too

I think they should just boycott voting to show their dissatisfaction with the previous election.

I switched to Democrat so I could help Barny the Communist defeat Crooked Hillary in 2016.
