Chinese geologists report that North Korean nuclear test site collapsed

Mountain of evidence indicates that North Korean peace proposal may actually be genuine.

Legal Insurrection readers may recall that my September 2017 post discussing that the North Korean mountain used as a test site was poised to collapse.

A mountain in North Korea believed to have served as the site of five of the rogue regime’s nuclear tests — including Sunday’s supposed hydrogen bomb explosion — is at risk of collapsing and leaking radiation into the region, a Chinese scientist said Monday.

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui province, examined the Punggye-ri site and said they “were confident” underground detonations were occurring underneath the mountain, South China Morning Post reported. Wang Naiyan, a former chairman of the China Nuclear Society and a researcher on China’s own nuclear weapons program, said another test underneath the mountain can cause an “environmental disaster” if the site caves in on itself, allowing radiation to escape and “drift across the region,” including into China.

Recall that shortly after Kim Jong Un’s brief trip to Beijing last month, Chinese officials indicated that North Korea was now fully on board with “denuclearization.”

The North Korean dictator has now joyfully crossed the border to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-for an 8.5 hour summit.

I believe all of these news items are connected. Chinese geologists are now reporting that the North Korean mountain has collapsed.

Chinese geologists claim in a new study that the mountain above North Korea’s main nuclear test site collapsed in September, rendering the area unsafe for further testing because of possible radiation leaks — a finding that may shed a different light on Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its nuclear testing program.

The study carried out by scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China, in Hefei, concluded that the mountain buckled under the stress of multiple explosions caused by the release of huge amounts of heat and energy. The study’s authors said the area needs close monitoring for leaking radiation.

The data for the study were collected after North Korea’s sixth — and most powerful — nuclear test on Sept. 3. It subsequently triggered four earthquakes.

I can only imagine the conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kim exactly one month ago, as the North Korean test site now threatens China.

The University of Science and Technology of China paper, authored by Tian Dongdong, Yao Jiawen and Wen Lianxing, said the first of those earthquakes, which occurred 8 ½ minutes after the explosion, was “an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center,” while those that followed were an “earthquake swarm” in similar locations.

“In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse,” the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university’s website.

…A study published last month by the journal, authored by a team led by Liu Junqing at the earthquake bureau in Jilin province along the border with North Korea, found similar results of the Sept. 3 explosion. It described the aftershock that followed seconds later as most likely a “rapid destruction of an explosion-generated cracked rock chimney due to cavity collapse.”

One of the more disturbing elements of the Chinese reports is that the mountain’s “seal” has broken and there is now a potential conduit to leak radioactive particles.

One group of researchers found that the most recent blast tore open a hole in the mountain, which then collapsed upon itself. A second group concluded that the breakdown created a “chimney” that could allow radioactive fallout from the blast zone below to rise into the air.

North Korea’s nuclear tests are of special concern to Beijing, since the test site near the town of Kilju is less than 60 miles from the border with China.

Furthermore, there are reports of North Koreans contracting a “ghost disease” in the areas around the test site.

“So many people died, we began calling it ‘ghost disease,’” Lee Jeong Hwa, a defector who used to live by a nuclear testing site, told NBC News.

“We thought we were dying because we were poor and we ate badly. Now we know it was the radiation.”

While it is understandable to be concerned that the negotiations are a bid from North Korea to buy time to develop their nuclear weapons, there is a mountain of evidence that leads me to believe North Korea now has real motivation to end the Korean War rapidly.

No. You really can’t “think”. You’ve always been someone who thought she could cousin me with your seeming “reasonableness”, asking personal questions to gain some leverage.

Rags, most of your posts contain personal insults, why don’t you try dropping those insults? You might also stop acting like your claims about stuff like IQ are etched in stone and no one has a right to challenge your claims.

Try being civil, others will usually respond in kind.

Just to be clear…I don’t think we have ever cousin-ed up. My comment, meant to be a joke, had to do with your devolution of posts over the evening. Go back to Redstate and other postings around that time and tell me I’m not right…. people don’t drive better when they are drunk nor are they funnier when they post.

Of course he will. President always take credit for anything good that happens on their watch. And the blame for anything bad. Well, except for Obama – he took credit for everything and blame for nothing.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Ragspierre. | April 29, 2018 at 12:41 pm

Virtually every president takes credit for positive things and assigns blame to others.

… a finding that may shed a different light on Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its nuclear testing program.

Not different at all. When Kim started acting all virtuous it was fairly obvious that he was pretending that some dire necessity was a new-found virtue, and loss of his test grounds was the cause (or one of several). Ditto for the Chinese reading him the riot act last month; although there were certainly additional reasons for that.

    oldgoat36 in reply to tom_swift. | April 29, 2018 at 12:33 pm

China probably gave Kim the riot act, but when combined with the sanctions and the grave concerns that China and N. Korea have about Trump and what he will do probably have the tin pot rocketman afraid he won’t have his playground anymore.

China withdrawing their support, while Trump is being aggressive is a tough blow on Kim. China has never before signaled that they would not support him, so he acted as a taunter while big brother was behind him. Now, he is probably out there on his own, and knows if the US attacked him he would be gone in a flash.

Nothing happens in a vacuum, China is worried about Trump, so they pushed Kim into a place as the pawn he has always been. Trump had more to do with this than the leftists and neverTrumpers will ever give him credit for. I guarantee you, even with this leak had a wimp like Obama been in office, it still wouldn’t have changed Kim’s stance.

Well, it seems like the Koreans beat him to it and are already giving Trump credit. ????

Ragspierre in reply to jabster. | April 29, 2018 at 10:20 am

For the mountain collapsing? I hadn’t seen that reported.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Ragspierre. | April 29, 2018 at 11:00 pm

Mountains collapse when dimwits hollow out so much of the center that what is left cannot hold the weight. It will be funny if Kim starts getting a dose of his creation.

jabster: Well, it seems like the Koreans beat him to it and are already giving Trump credit. ????

That’s the coin of the realm with the Americans. Stroke their president, and they will accede to most anything.

Leslie Eastman: Mountain of evidence indicates that North Korean peace proposal may actually be genuine.

Or rather that the concession is anything but. At this point, it must be assumed the North Koreans still have nuclear and missile capabilities.

Peace proposal out of self-preservation is more believable to me than any “change of heart” on North Korea’s part.

    tom_swift in reply to kenoshamarge. | April 29, 2018 at 11:27 am

Oh, I wouldn’t expect any change of heart by the Norks no matter what. I’d expect a change of plan.

Whether that’s good enough for the rest of us remains to be seen.

Translation: the peace proposal is fake, and Trump is falsely taking credit for it.

Or the peace proposal is genuine and driven by necessity.

Nixon in China: would have happened if Goofy had been President.
Collapse of the Soviet Union?
End of Korean War?

How about the upcoming recognition of Israel by Saudi Arabia?

This is more deflection.

China does not care a whit about potential nuclear radiation released by a collapsing mountain in the DPRK. This “revelation” is simply a way for China to save face for pressuring Kim to cease his nuclear testing program [at least temporarily] and for Kim for doing so.

China essentially told Kim to cease and desist in order to mitigate the damage being done by Trump’s economic actions against it. China is also hoping for a reduction in US military action in the area, especially the South China Sea, and military build-ups in Japan, Taiwan and other Asian nations.

The DPRK was never a significant threat to anyone other than the ROK and, possibly Japan. And, the Chinese were never going to allow the DPRK to do anything which would have precipitated a US armed attack on that country. The only real threat to the region is the PRC.

Close The Fed in reply to Mac45. | April 30, 2018 at 1:00 pm

Agree with Mac45, except the last paragraph. The Norks were/are a threat. He was lobbing missiles all over the place.

PLUS, don’t forget, the Norks have 2 satellites passing over the U.S.A. every day. Could easily attack us with EMP with those.

I’m finding the msm reporting of this amusing. Barely a word reported on any of this until Trump gets an Indian Chief’s eagle feathered headdress for the Huuugely historic photos of North and South coming together. Then within 24 hours, this is suddenly the news of the day. It wasn’t because of Trump, it was because of huuuuge news we previously buried.

Are there any other test sites, anywhere, that have ever had this happen?

“which occurred 8 ½ minutes after the explosion, was “an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center,” while those that followed were an “earthquake swarm” in similar locations.”

similar locations – plural?

Remember, Kim was not only threatening to shoot missiles, he shot missiles. There is any number of suspects, Japan or China included, who might be responsible for the sabotage.

Trump, as our representative on the world stage, ought to rake credit for this. Trump scared that little prick into being stupid, probably is under death watch by China if that mountain leaks. Forceful diplomacy worked verses the payoff diplomacy that got us into this spot in the first place.

‘Mountain of evidence.’ I see what you did there.

According to a report in Reuters, Kim Jong Un has said that there are “two additional, larger tunnels that remain ‘in a very good condition’ at the Punggye-ri test site beyond the existing one, which experts have said has collapsed after repeated explosions, rendering much of the site useless.” And, it’s apparently to the shut down of these that he has invited “experts and journalists from the United States and South Korea.”

translation: please, no more repeated explosions on the rest of my nuclear sites. I’ll let you come in and shut them down nicely.

None of this would be happening if it wasn’t for the fact that adults are in charge in Washington now!!

The appeaser in chief has fucked off in to the dustbin of history as a failed, hugely flawed human and now we have someone in charge who is getting results left, right and centre.

Trump will receive the Nobel Peace Prize and the hardest hit will be the left because remember they took great delight in telling us just how Trump will start a nuclear war!

Let’s not forget how hard it becomes impeaching someone who has ensured world peace through re-uniting the Korean peninsula AND destroying Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Again hardest hit is the left!

DaveGinOly in reply to mailman. | April 29, 2018 at 3:06 pm

Ronald Rayguns was going to start WW III too, but his military buildup, along with his hard-line style of diplomacy, led to the fall of the USSR. (I’m old enough, at 61, to remember the shrillness of the left at the time, and the anti-nuclear/disarmament crowd going into overdrive for fear of Reagan – not fear of the Soviet Union. They had zero doubt the cowboy was going to precipitate a war.)

Just like Reagan forced the Soviets to spend themselves into bankruptcy, perhaps Trump’s approach forced NK to test beyond the capacity of its facilities, hastening the collapse of their mountain.

If Trump can broker this, even if it is solely fortuitous, is what matters. Imagine what Obama would likely have done presented with the same opportunity.

Imagine what Obama would likely have done presented with the same opportunity.

The same way he reacted to anything—opportunity, crisis, disaster, or whatever. He’d have gone golfing. Then attended a D’rat fundraiser. Then home for a nap.

Imagine what Obama would likely have done presented with the same opportunity.

    Probably have sent them aid.

We have already seen what Obama would have done in similar positions during the Iranian “peoples” revolution. Great on his arse supporting the mullahs with his inaction. Fuck Obama, histories worst American president.

There are other theories about what made the Nork’s nuke mountain collapse.

There seems to be a surprisingly large number of equally surprisingly strong people who are capable of throwing this fat bastard the length of a football field, because I see more and more blind acceptance of his about-face in political posturing as a joyous occasion, instead of simply more cunning maneuverings by a mass murderer to gain the most advantageous position over his sworn enemies—the same enemies he’s conned repeatedly. Being forced to the bargaining table is not at all the same thing as full cooperation, unhindered inspections, and abandoning decades of tyrannical policies against his own people.

elle in reply to MrSatyre. | April 29, 2018 at 3:16 pm

Get off your high horse. When did all of these people, whom you believe yourself so much smarter than, ever say they thought that Kim had a come to Jesus moment?

Last year he was shooting missiles and threatening our homeland. Today he’s at the bargaining table and shaking hands with SK and agreeing to inspections.

The same people who cheered Clinton’s and Obama’s Chamberlain moments are now sneering that this as no big deal because Kim will continue to be as ruthless as he can?? He will always be as ruthless as he is allowed to be. That’s the whole point of celebrating this success.

Close The Fed in reply to elle. | April 30, 2018 at 1:04 pm

I agree with Mr Satyre and Elle:

Kim will get away with whatever he can.
Trump won’t let him get away with much of anything.

      Both are right.

Is there no possibility that Kim might be taking advantage of the situation to get out from Chinese hegemony?

harleycowboy | April 30, 2018 at 9:59 am

It’s really had to have a nuclear program when you blow up your own facilities.

There is no doubt that Trump got lucky, but it has been reported many times that the harder you work the luckier you get.
