Woman whose plane seat was given to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee says United has yet to apologize
“United has NOT apologized. Man at call center, answering my form complaint, said he was very sorry, but far from written apology United owes. “
Monday, Professor Jacobson blogged about the plight of Jean-Mario Simon, a woman whose first-class plane ticket was given to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
Simon claims she had to play hardball to get a voucher for her troubles.
The internet responded with empathy and a heavy heaping of racist accusations.
Simon has spent the better part of the last few days trying to correct the record from her Twitter account.
Got voucher only by insisting. United threatened to remove me from plane for taking photo. United manager called me @ home: said United behavior at gate/on plane contra United training. Said taking photos is legal, andaid United will investigate to c who did this to me.

Gate agent wanted originally to give me $300. I've seen people get twice that for voluntarily giving up seat on overbooked flights. When I asked for free meal/bev., gate agent said, "And I want a Mercedes Benz, but I'm not going to get it." https://t.co/cYPg5m9WBT

There are several stories floating around, like this one from the NY Post saying United apologized to Simon. According to Simon, that’s not accurate. She claims United has yet to formally apologize.
SFC + NYP articles claim "apology" from United and $500 as apology wrong. United phone agent apologized, no apology from corporate United. $500 voucher was from exasperated gate agent who originally offered $300 and gave me ultimatum to take the $500 or have plane leave w/o me.

United has NOT apologized. Man at call center, answering my form complaint, said he was very sorry, but far from written apology United owes. And $500 voucher was issued at gate right after Untied cancelled my flight, not part of "apology package." @united

@united, this problem isn't going away on its own. You need to address things forthrightly, and apologize. https://t.co/NlGU8P6yXb

True to form, Jackson played the race card:
I noted that this individual came toward me and took a picture. I heard later that she might have said “I know who she is.” Since this was not any fault of mine, the way the individual continued to act appeared to be, upon reflection, because I was an African American woman,

seemingly an easy target along with the African American flight attendant who was very, very nice. This saddens me, especially at this time of year given all of the things we have to work on to help people. But in the spirit of this season and out of the sincerity of my heart,

if it is perceived that I had anything to do with this, I am kind enough to simply say sorry. I understand the airline is working to address the passenger’s concerns. I am glad of that. But as an African American, I know there are too many examples like this all over the nation

I have known Jean Marie Simon since the 1980’s. As a photographer she risked her life to document human rights abuses in war- torn Guatemala for years. She then went to Harvard Law School so that she could learn how to go to bat for these victims. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2012/11/jean-marie-simon-foreign-witness-guatemala-s-war/
The fact that Jackson Lee, who knows nothing of Simon or her stellar work in the field of human rights , accused Simon of racism is disturbing and sickening. Jackson Lee has no idea who she is dealling with. She owes my pal Simon an apology ASAP
SJL takes citizen’s first class seat and claims racism when her privilege is questioned. Dog bites (wo)man. Who could have seen that coming? We all know who the actual racist is.
The White guy, sitting next to the uppity Ms. Lee, is probably calling his Travel Agent begging to get off the plane…..
The “ White guy” is Congressman Ted Poe. He told Jean Marie Simon that he’s observed Lee doing this to passengers routinely and that it was “shameful.”
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
I think we have enough evidence to judge the content of SJL’s character.
Gee, I sure wish I was African American so that I could enjoy all that privilege.
I think most of humanity wishes they had the privilege of seeing you pushed into fast moving traffic.
Reverse Lee and Simon’s roles here and United ends up on list of US companies that went bankrupt in 2017.
Lee only knows one move. Even when she uses her privilege and abuses of power as a US Rep to take from common folk, she still has to cry racism and act the victim.
The original story that I read said that Simon did not know who took her seat until she got on the plane after being kicked off. From the gate where she was arguing with the agent, her seat was not visible. All of this makes sjl claim of racism total nonsense. Why can’t the msm actually print this the way it happened and stop protecting a POS like lee?
Those uppity whites just don’t know their place.
I think the lesson here is that if you use miles to buy a First Class seat, you can get bumped by a paying customer.
if that is the case, why the shinanagans of United, claiming Simon had cancelled her ticket? Also, SJL – did she actually purchase a ticket in first class, for that specific flight before that day, or was it a case of SJL wanting to get on that flight and demanding it?
DOES SJL actually PAY??? I’d doubt it.
Well you doubt it. Case closed!
According to United and all other major Airlines there is no difference between paying with miles or cash.
Also, I am sure that SJL’s flight was paid for by the taxpayers not her.
Lee has a long history of double and triple booking flights, insisting on “special” treatment, and generally making airlines serve her whims.
United owes this passenger an apology and the return of the miles used to book the seat from which she was bumped.
A drunk Kennedy at a car crash stated that he was going to Congress for a vote and was let totally off the hook. Lee could legally claim the same… as to whether she needed the seat or for convenience wanted it… well we need diversity to find out….
Kennedy is dead and buried. Why don’t you pick something more recent? I am sure Simon wouldn’t want to sit next to Trump wearing a skirt.
Bulldust. Patrick Kennedy is alive and breathing.
And how do you know whether Simon would welcome a grope from Trump? As he said, women often welcome that sort of thing from powerful men.
So Trump would have you believe. But I doubt many of them wear skirts when they know he might be sitting next to them.
Trump wasn’t making anything up. It’s very widely known that many women are attracted to powerful men. Hence the phenomenon of groupies.
@Milhouse There are groupies. Then there are women who did not wish to be, nor did they present themselves as groupies – but DJT felt more entitled than SJL ever could.
Where is the outrage? Oh, wait – he is white and has adopted your politics.
“There are groupies.” So how do you know she isn’t one of them?
Alaskabob, there is no question that congressmen are immune from arrest while on their way to or from the Capitol, but they’re not immune from the legal consequences of whatever they do. They can be sued, prosecuted, and even arrested at some later time. Kennedy was escorted home that morning without arrest, but then he was charged and pleaded guilty.
None of which is relevant to Lee, since there’s no allegation that she did anything that would get someone else arrested.
Washington Examiner today: Sheila Jackson Lee: “Terror of the Skies Since 1995” http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/rep-sheila-jackson-lee-terror-of-the-skies-since-1995/article/2644383
Lee is a a pig.
Surprised she’s not trying to root on he .
Sue, baby, sue. Class action.
Investigate Pig Lee’s flying bills and who is paying for them.
Didn’t the Trump administration just rule that when a contract specifies individual arbitration, there cannot be a class action? She needs the CFPB!
Besides her class would need to be those who bought tickets with miles and were downgraded from 1st class to coach by a black woman taking their seat.
You’re an idiotic, brain-dead, spineless twit.
I have rocks in my yard with more wit and intelligence than you.
Awww you’re a cute little “dissident”. Can you make some more super rad disparaging remarks about white people? It gives you so much cred!
Hold your breath and they will pay..
