If it were not for the fact that a young man is dead, the factual accounts and investigations in the media of the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman would be laughable.
There is no better proof that cases should not be tried in the media than the accounts of whether Zimmerman said “f-ing coons” under his breath on the 911 tape. That alleged statement has been the key media and left-blogosphere piece of evidence of racial motivation.
Yet CNN has rolled out three different audio experts over the past two weeks, each of whom has come to a different conclusion.
CNN Audio Expert No. 1 – sounds like “f-ing coons”
CNN Audio Expert No. 2 – sounds like “f-ing cold”
CNN Audio Expert No. 3 – sounds like “f-ing punks”
This is just one piece of evidence, and it’s evidence that is recorded.
If there is reasonable doubt as to something to which we can listen, can you imagine how the case will play out as to that brief time span between the end of Zimmerman’s 911 call and the neighbor’s 911 call when someone is heard screaming for help?
I am not predicting anything, and the public does not have key forensic evidence. But anyone who thinks no prosecution or a not guilty verdict is out of the realm of possibility is deluding themselves.
If the case ends with Zimmerman going free, where does the public anger go after the media already has convicted him?

Given that polling shows “the black community overwhelmingly believes he was murdered and that police let his killer get away due to racism” (link: http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/140306/ ) I’d guess that even if the media tries to start walking back some of its more outrageously wrong “facts,” there’s going to be no walking back the racial animus that’s been stirred up.
You can stop squeezing the tube of toothpaste, but it’s a bit more complicated an exercise to put the toothpaste already out there back in the tube.
The leftist media loves to put out the incorrect story, with retractions, if at all, in very small print, hidden in obscure places. A commenter on Althouse accused the Milwaukee-Journal-Sentinel with putting “speed ahead of accuracy”. Except that they have done this so often, it is more malicious than that. I believe they know the narrative they are putting out is false, and want to put that false narrative out before the facts are in, so they can claim they were just trying to be fast.
The 8th Commandment isn’t “don’t tell lies”, it is “don’t bear false witness”. Destroying somebody’s reputation is much worse than stealing all their money. These people want to destroy their victims, and the truth.

The outcry over Martin/Zimmerman is that a police department with a history of racial problems apparently just took the killing of a black teenager in stride…possibly due to the ridiculous ‘stand your ground’ law…which should be renamed ‘Morons and Wannabe Vigilantes with Guns’ law.
If Zimmerman is arrested and stands trial, even if (and when) he is found not guilty…since that’s the nearly inevitable outcome….it’s possible nothing will happen.
A lot of the outrage is due to the perception that Zimmerman’s “self-defense” story was believed without much question, even though he was the guy with the gun, who precipitated the confrontation.
Even if Zimmerman is arrested an eventually goes to trial, he will almost certainly go free.
I guess we’ll just see what happens then…but the anger isn’t over justice being wrong….at this point, it’s over justice not even being applied in the first place.

We will never know what was going through Trayvon Martin’s head. We can assume he did not expect to die that night. We do see from his tweets that there was an underlying attitude which might have had something to do with the confrontation.
It is a sad story for both families.
And it is a horrendous disgrace to the MSM. I simply do not believe a word they write except for the dateline. Absolutely no credibility.

You admit that if he stands trial it’s nearly inevitable that he will be acquitted. In other words, no prima facie case exists against him. He has no case to answer. If so, how can you possibly justify subjecting him to a trial in the first place? How is that constitutional or just (not to mention a good use of taxpayers’ resources)?

I’ve been posting on this from the start. As a veteran detective I suspected from the outset that this case was not as it seemed. Martin did not get shot “WWB” (walking while black), Martin got shot “SWT” (shot while thuggin’) which I have witnessed in different variations a thousand times. I’ve seen youth (mostly minorities) with an inflated sense of arrogance and the idea they were above proper social behavior turn a nonviolent contact into a deadly one based on being “disrespected” (whatever that meant at that moment).
We’ve spent trillions of dollars and forty years in an effort to breed the end result of what you see today. I’m sure that wasn’t the original intent, but like most of our government’s efforts the unintended consequences effect has taken over here.

In talking about the drive to race bait and make a story turn from dog bites man (Chicago shootings) to man bites dog (black unarmed kid killed by racist white man), the MSM people have shown they are what would be tyrants love- a loyal lapdog media. But the truth is different, as I ended another post on this issue concerning the ethics of race baiting.
…What CG misses is when it comes to race baiting, there is no road low enough. There is no decency. If there were Sharpton and Rush and Jackson and MSNBC would be protesting down Chicago streets demanding blacks quit killing blacks and that gangs must be driven out of existence.
But they don’t. Why? No money in it. And frankly, they know what I know- it would be a wasted effort. No more than you can “un-spoil” milk, can you fix the problem with the black urban community. The only hope, much like that in places like Afghanistan, is to teach the NEXT generation what is acceptable behavior and hope the old guard just dies out. And like Afghanistan, that effort is almost futile as the old guard still insists on teaching the children how they have been victimized and how that gives them extra rights, including the “right” to lash out violently when “offended.”
More succinctly put: Forty years of “I gets mine” and “whitey is holdin’ the black man down” and “no justice no peace” have given rise to generations of blacks acting out. Or better put: Sharpton killed Martin.

archer 52, Thanks. I did not know that the idea of disrespect was a contributing factor to the culture. If you remember the tale of the Hatfield and McCoy feuds in the mountains, where entire families were murdered, the basis of the feud it was discovered was “no respect’ since both families really had nothing to fight over. And this “respect” concept had been brought over from Britain after one of the ethnic (religious?) slaughters when the people emigrated to a better life but bringing their hatred with them. I can not source the Hatfied study, but I lot of background is given in Webbs book- Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America.
The “respect” demanded by the thug culture is really a demand for fear of them. I see it every day here. Groups of guys sauntering down the middle of a street, not on the sidewalks, literally daring a driver to honk or otherwise interrupt their swagger….frequently accompanied by a bouncing basketball. The follow on is a couple doing the same thing, after dark, heads swiveling left to right looking down … at parked car windows. Guess what they’re doing? Beyond that, drivers passing through thug neighborhoods will often encounter folks just stepping of the curb to cross a street on a diagonal, intentionally, looking at the driver just out of the corners of their eyes, daring them to not stop mid block while the saunter goes on, slowly. They do it to their own people as much as anyone … what’s that tell us?
That’s part of the reason I moved out of California to Idaho. My once lovely, quiet suburban neighbor was becoming a ghetto. There was a grocery store one block from my house and the local high school was one block away from the store in the opposite direction of my house. I was literally terrified to go to the store after school let out. The store hired a guard that began his shift just before school let out. The store got rid of all the little hand baskets because the kids were coming in, grabbing one and filling them with booze and running out of the store while other kids created a diversion on the other side of the store. I was pushed off the sidewalk by a group of black girls (I’m a grandma) and forced to walk out into the street to get around them. They just laughed and sneered at me. I fooled them. I moved out of state and took my tax dollars with me!
I hear ya’. We left California under the white-flight wing ourselves just four months ago. We now hail from the great state of Tennessee, far northeastern part, in a very rural area well off the beaten path. We’re right by a fabulous fishing lake, we have wooded acreage, hunting land abounds, and green, green mountains and meadows are our natural landscape. There are no neighbors in sight, no cars at all come by, no machinery, and best of all……..no “youths” to have to look at, hear, smell, fear or put up with in any way. Everything is clean, pristine, quiet and calm. The population in the little town closest to us is 98% white. The rest are mainly hispanic. The people are gracious, welcoming, friendly and, most importantly, well-mannered and genteel. We have four distinct seasons and pretty nice weather. All that, and we’re still only about 6-7 hours to the ocean. Another big draw is the state government. They are vastly more pragmatic than CA’s government, mind their own business, and understand they are public servants who do our bidding, not the other way around. My only regret is that we waited as long as we did to leave California. We were thrilled to leave a certain ethnicity in our rear-view mirror, and I’m not talking about hispanics. Oh, and we brought our tax dollars and disposable income with us, too. 🙂
When the Zimmerman family hired Hal Uhrig I became convinced that some sort of charges would be filed against George Zimmerman. Then, this morning, the local morning host…who came here from that area…reported that he is hearing that the State’s Attorney will press some sort of charge against Zimmerman prior to the Grand Jury convening. Thereby forcing a court appearance where this whole sordid affair can be the next media circus.
That’s a lot of speculation from hear say. But it would fit the pattern of how this mess is being handled.
This is just sickening, if true.

There is a simple explanation of why the left-leaning media found a single syllable that “proves” the racial motivations of Zimmerman, while the president can go on for hours and all they hear is fluffy bunnies and unicorns.
If they can “prove” racial bias, they can get this tried in State Court *and* Federal Court like the cops in the Rodney King trial, and its amazingly popular sequel, the Federal trial on civil rights violations. Because double-jeopardy protection is soooo like old and outmoded, and this way they can get a riot to cover too.

Sorry, but the racial animus was stirred up by the MSM years ago during the ‘civil rights’ movement. If that movement began as one devoted to equality and justice, the endless din of wrongdoing whiteys oppressing angelic minorities, despite enormous efforts and disbursements to make amends, has metastasized into a movement seeking revenge and role reversal. Racial animus is the driving force, and ‘critical race theory’ its organizing principle.
Convenient incidents such as the Martin/Zimmerman incident are carefully selected from time to time by corrupt media to refresh that politically useful animus, but it’s been with us for decades.
I know this about people—the majority of us can be incensed by a skilled manipulator.
But a majority of those people…on finding they were manipulated…turn on their manipulator with a rare ferocity. They will not believe them again.

Under the Florida’s immunity provisions regarding self defense claims, in order to arrest Zimmerman, a court hearing before a judge is necessary to determine whether probable cause exists to try Zimmerman for either manslaughter or murder. BTW, under Florida law, unless a court hearing dictates that probable cause exists for criminal charges, no civil action will be allowed under that same immunity provision. What is unclear to me is whether a Grand Jury indictment would be interpreted as fulfilling the probable cause requirement without a pre-trial hearing before a judge.
