Pence debate performance “changed the atmosphere” and “a net-net very big plus for Republicans”
My interview on The MIchael Koolidge Show – VP Debate, John Doe, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, and current state of the presidential race.
I was a guest on The Michael Koolidge Show on 1440 WROK in Rockford, Illinois and numerous other stations.
The discussion started with my take on the VP debate.
“I was left with the feeling wondering why Mike Pence wasn’t the presidential nominee because he was so much better on his feet than Donald Trump. And I wonder if Trump had given the performance that Pence gave, I think the polling would be very different nowadays. Trump was rising in the polls as we approached the presidential debate, it was not a good night for him by any account, and he has sunk pretty significantly, several percentage points, since then. And I just think that if he were as prepared as Pence was prepared, if he was on message as much, if he didn’t take the bait the way Pence never took the bait, I think we could be in a very different spot here.
That said, while I don’t know that a vice presidential debate changes a lot votes, I think it can change the atmosphere. And I do think it changed the atmosphere a little bit. I think it undid some of the damage done to Trump by the debate that he participated in. I think there probably are a lot more people out there thinking, well I’m not sure if I’m going to vote for him, but maybe I need to think about this again. So I think it was a net-net very big plus for the Republicans, even if it doesn’t change a lot of votes in itself.”
We then discussed whether Pence now is the frontrunner for 2020 if Trump doesn’t win.
Then we moved on to the John Doe investigation in Wisconsin, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, and current state of the presidential race.
The posts we discussed were:
- Can we finally stick a fork in Wisconsin John Doe?
- Hillary destroyed Nakoula Basseley Nakoula’s life with false Benghazi film claim, but no one cares

Your comments about the VP debate are noteworthy, especially concerning the potential for influencing the atmosphere of the campaign. There are any number of recognized persons who are supporters of Trump/Pence. As a campaign strategy, they ought to saturate the airways with some of these reasoned persons who likewise might give some of the undecideds pause to reflect.
wondering why Mike Pence wasn’t the presidential nominee because he was so much better on his feet than Donald Trump.
Is that what the Presidency is about?
Normally a VP debate, while interesting for a news cycle, is not a game changer. This one might be different…especially if Trump goes in and builds on what Pence just did for him. It is a gift and one that came at a very important time for Team Trump.
I suspect that a particularly good or bad VP debate performance doesn’t live in the public eye for long. It’s the sort of story easily blown off media screens by sexier and bloodier stories. Like clowns.
I would agree with you on all of the other debates that I have seen except the last one with Trump and hillary. He was just terrible. It was like the early primary debates where he would get away without saying anything at all of substance. Of course, she was terrible too and looked like a cackling robot. He has to offer some message to us or the enthusiasm will die. He needs to stop with the little quips and not let hillary get under his skin. If he can do this he may pull it out. But if he is as bad as he was in the last one, then there will be plenty of people who will simply stay home. And please, leave off the crap that a “No vote” is a vote for hillary. There are a lot of Demorats who will not pull the lever for her either. Sometimes it is better to just walk away than to be smeared with the garbage called politics.
I was speaking about VP debates.

The winner of VP debate was Pence. The loser was not Kaine. Loser was Trump. And he realized that, because next day after VP debate, Pence was back to spouting nonsense about how Trump’s policies won the debate. It simply would not do for VP candidate to leave the POTUS candidate behind chocking on dust.
Pence did position himself well for 2020. Not my top 2020 choice, but I would not be surprised if he made a run for it, and would be happy to vote for him then.
Spin it all you like, Kaine got panned from one end of the spectrum to the other. Between the interruptions and the transparent lying, he made problems for himself, with everybody except the CTR types.
Prof,
Good interview. This election keeps getting curiouser and curiouser.
I have been using DVDStyler ( http://www.dvdstyler.org/en/ )for years and it works fine. (At least for my tasks.) Many features and it’s free. There are some tutorials on youTube.
Have you explored youTube’s online editing software? I haven’t used it, but it’s there and it’s free.
Did he change the atmosphere….or…more likely…Pence made it even harder for the mfm to ignore whats really going on with the election?
It really doesn’t matter what Trump says, the media is against him almost to a man. He says “we should know everything possible about everyone wanting to come here” and the media reports “Turmp punches baby in dick”.

If the VP debate changed the atmosphere, it got no help from Drudge. I thought it was weird that he began promoting the hurricane rather than how well Pence did at the debate (I did not watch it, but I gather that is the consensus).
A number of sources have said that Pence looked exactly like what they wanted in a President, and I do not believe it.
I have watched a LOT of debates, from Kennedy-Nixon (no, I did not understand any of it) on. I recall Newt Gingrich protesting that Mitt Romney said something untrue, in proper fashion, and how the moderator and the media swept right by it.
I watched Mike Pence make one statement calling out a string of lies by Kaine about various statements where an untruthful Clinton-connected media put words into Trump’s mouth, and saw Pence castigated later for “failing to defend Trump” and “pretending he was defending an actual Republican candidate.”
The simple truth is that Mike Pence did a good job that he could never have made stick, without Trump in the background.
The Republicans have presented one great candidate after another, only to have their candidacies spiked and misrepresented by the Clinton media. The one great virtue demonstrated by Donald Trump during the early part of his campaign was his ability to pierce the media curtain. That is why he is the candidate, instead of somebody like Pence.
Trump’s second great virtue has been demonstrated through a lifetime of business dealings: he has great executive ability to negotiate win-win-win solutions. This was also demonstrated this week.
Trump had bought the Miss Universe pageant, and Alicia Machado, the winner, had gained 60 pounds. Instead of firing her, he got her a personal trainer and a plan, and held a very positive press conference, where he defended her against a media (CNN) that was doing some horrible fat shaming. The plan worked, it saved her job, and gave her the opportunity for self-determination afterward.
This is the incident from 1997 that Clinton campaign dredged up, and bribed the now mob-connected Ms. Machado http://archive.is/jHaEh with US citizenship to slander Trump. Oh, and now that her past has been uncovered, she has now decided to retire from the pubic eye.
There are two lessons to learn from this last incident: 1) Trump has been a positive, creative problem-solver all of his life, and 2) with a Clinton administration, no good deed will go unpunished, on purpose.
Hey Valerie, nicely done. I see some spineless chip hit the thumbs down but did not have enough guts to reply.
Its scary the level of misdirection I have seen during this election cycle. I know more conservative liberals and independents that are voting for Trump this year that would have never voted for a republican. I do not know one republican that is not voting for Trump. After the debate, it was “Pence did not defend Trump” talking point that was obviously given to about every media outline I checked on. When that failed it was “Pence is pushing for 2020″. Is the thought” vote for Hilary now and Pence later”?
It is interesting how much Mark Levin has changed his tune. Was it money/fan based driven or is some of that corporate influence backing off. The powers against Trump are yuge.
When I started watching this I was a big fan of Cruz but as more came out about him and people I know did not trust him, I knew he did not have the personality to win and carry those voters by the non-republican base needed to win.
I think Pence did a great job at the debate, but it was not hard to do considering how bad Kaine was. Interesting how we don’t remember how bad Obama did with Romney and Obama still won. Why? Because debates don’t really matter. I think Pence just gives those NeverTrump types cover to vote Trump.
I have to give Trump credit. I don’t think I ever seen someone campaign so hard. I am amazed at how little the democrats are campaigning. It is really strange. Do the Dems have it in the bag? What do they have up their sleeve? Is the voting system ridged? Are they just lazy? I have to believe something is brewing.
Sorry, meant to say “spineless chimp”

As usual, you’re full of shit. Levin still loathes Der Donald. He’s just decided that voting for this Collectivist puke is the best of his lousy choices.
To MarkSmith:
I think by saying the dems aren’t campaigning, you mean Hillary isn’t. And she isn’t because she’s sick, or she’s got some medical problem, and she’s tired. But despite all that, she got HUGE ambition. Useless Clinton ambition.
Unpleasant how Ragspierre rarely writes in a civil manner.
Apparently you find the lies of a greasy little liar more “pleasant” than the bracing truth.
To each his or her own, I guess…
“Apparently you find the lies of a greasy little liar more “pleasant” than the bracing truth.”
Are you claiming to be the truth bearer? Egads! The Jacobin Bonehead has spoken.
I know you can do better than that. You are a smart guy, right?
Here you go, fan-gurl.
Not “women”. Donald “Da Pig” T-rump in his own words and voice.
Spin that.

Rags, he’s just refreshingly un-PC, a manly man who appreciates lady parts, an amazingly fearless spokesman for telling it like it is. Alternately, this is a LIE, the demonic anti-Trump media created this recording in someone’s basement. Or . . . Bill Clinton is a snakey snake who’s snakey and was actually photographed in the Garden of Eden in his true snakey form. You know the drill.
The problem for your gal, Hillary, is that Bill did much more than talk about it and she helped cover it up and trash the reputations of his accusers.
The problem with everyone is they are getting distracted with Bill when her record from White Water, Travel Gate, Healthcare, Bengazi,…..
At this point personal character does not matter (obvious few running for office have it). What we really need to do is focus on who can do the right thing. Hopefully Donald can move beyond bimbo eruptions. Except for his women things, he has a great story. The Times called him the Comeback Kid! When reminded of the Democrat history of women we have Kennedy, LBJ, Hart, Edwards and the Master Billy Boy. Getting Hillary branded as a lizbo is not going to change vote. Getting people in the inner city to hear that he can do something about the gangs and drugs will.
MSM needs to be held accountable. We need to push back for the real stuff.
In other words, MoveOn.Org.
Good little Collectivist liar for your cult.

I love the GIF, and of course, he’s right.
Maybe not, with any luck, Trump will drop out and Pence will pick a running mate, and this thing may yet be salvaged. It’s a long shot, but it’s the only shot the GOP has.
It’s not only my hope. It is my prayer that America will be spared a presidency of either Hillary or Trump. I honestly believe that, after the contentious years of the current administration, Mike Pence is the sort of person and has the experience that this nation needs.
We praying solemnly and profoundly for America, come January, 2017, to begin a road to a better place. We think Mike Pence could be quite of service is helping this to happen.
Fuzzy Slippers,
What was I thinking! Brain lapse. Voting is already underway. So, I think it would be near-impossiblity for a ticket change.
I guess the best we can hope for is that on January 20, 2017 Donald Trump is sworn in as POTUS. On January, 2, 2017 he resigns and Mike Pence is given the oath of office.
