Harvard to Blacklist Students Who Join Single Sex Organizations

“In an effort to foster inclusion.”

Harvard clearly thinks single sex organizations are a bad thing and they’re taking extraordinary measures to discourage students from joining them.

Let’s dispel once and for all with this fiction that progressives believe in choice.

The FIRE blog reports:

Harvard Brings Back the Blacklist for Final Club, Fraternity, Sorority Students

BOSTON, May 6, 2016—In a stunning attack on freedom of association, Harvard University announced today that members of independent, single-sex, off-campus organizations will be blacklisted from Rhodes and Marshall scholarships and banned from leadership of on-campus organizations or athletic teams.

Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust stated that next year, members of fraternities, sororities, and “final clubs” will begin to be denied these opportunities in an effort to foster “inclusion” and “address deeply rooted gender attitudes.” According to Dean Rakesh Khurana, who recommended the changes, such organizations have been independent from Harvard since 1984. They operate as off-campus entities and do not receive any recognition or benefit from the university.

“Outrageously, Harvard has decided that 2016 is the right time to revive the blacklist,” said Robert Shibley, executive director of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which defends freedom of association on campus. “This year’s undesirables are members of off-campus clubs that don’t match Harvard’s political preferences. In the 1950s, perhaps Communists would have been excluded. I had hoped that universities were past the point of asking people, ‘Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of a group we don’t like?’ Sadly, they are not.”

Harvard Will Punish Students Who Join Fraternities Because They’re ‘Privileged’

Harvard University President Drew Faust has made the shameful decision to punish students who want to join male-only and female-only clubs.

Beginning with the class of 2021, all students who join single-sex finals clubs—Harvard’s unofficial version of fraternities and sororities—will be ineligible for the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. They will also be prohibited from holding leadership positions in official campus organizations, and on sports teams.

Faust framed the decision as a necessary step to combat “forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values.”

“The College cannot ignore these organizations if it is to advance our shared commitment to broadening opportunity and making Harvard a campus for all of its students,” she said, according to The Harvard Crimson.

The decision to go after the finals clubs is partly a response to Harvard’s sexual assault task force, which labelled the organizations a threat to public safety—even though the overwhelming majority of reported rapes at Harvard took place in the dormitories.

In other words, this is just more of the progressive rape-culture, class and race privilege crap that’s ruining institutions of higher education all over America.

Why should Harvard be any different?

The students have no chance to appeal since Harvard owns the Supreme Court of the United States.

Ah, but the Harvard alums are not above sticking it to their “adopted mum”.

Several would take particular delight in the prospect!

They can’t even get the language right. It should be “sexual assault PREVENTION task force”.

Higher education, indeed.

Faust framed the decision as a necessary step to combat “forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values.”

They say as they make some organizations privileged over others and exclude those who do not think along party lines.

Perhaps they thought Orwell was writing the operating manual and not a satire and warning when he wrote Animal Farm and 1984.

Just more evidence that nearly every college level administrator is fully empowered to test the limits of progressive cultural engineering without penalty. They are neither penalized by reaction and especially not by financial repercussions. There is no risk to them, and so nearly no boundary on how far they can experiment.

To me this is the perfect laboratory to examine (petrie dish?) to see exactly what progressives mean or want as they increasingly use law to shape culture at large. It’s what Obama meant with all of his references to “transforming” our culture. Progressives by definition see law as the mechanism. That’s more or less why there is a steady supply of newly defined victims. It is the easiest way to expand social control, by leveraging the core tenet of “created equal” and why they so dearly worship the terms “equal” and “inclusion”.

The “burn it all down” solution applies to more than just our exiting governing bodies.

What about sports teams? They’ll have to make them a shining example of ‘inclusion’ too, right?

So, the basketball team will have to have equal numbers of male & female players on the floor at all times. Oh, wait, there’s five players on the floor, so that means there’ll have to be two females, two males, and a tranny.

The demand for 7′ transgender basketball players just skyrocketed!

Oh, and you get a whole new meaning for the term ‘switch hitter’, on the baseball team. 🙂

A member of a single-sex sports team should be ineligible for a leadership role on an athletics team.

In other news, Harvard introduces its new sports mascot, Charlie Foxtrot.

Well stated casualobserver. With the latest victim group being 1/3 of one percent (tranies), what will they have to sink to next. And they only worship the words, not the meaning of them. Disagree with them and you aren’t equal and as shown in the article shouldn’t be included. And they call us hypocritical.

To paraphrase someone, just another day in the closing of the academic mind. That this comes from someone named Faust… just too rich.

Also confirms what I’ve believed for some time: that you can graduate from Harvard – hell, run the damn place – and still be an idiot in a very fundamental way.

It all started with those Daughters of the American Revolution.

A Faustian bargain?

. . . “deeply rooted gender attitudes” . . .?

You mean like the fact that every human has either XX or XY chromosomes? Those deeply rooted enough for ya?

What about wymyn-only gyms and yoga classes? Will they be OK under this ridiculous policy but only if they allow guys delusional enough to think they’re female?

The Ivy League: beclowning itself one college at a time.

Isn’t that headline racist? Blacklist, really now, it’s as evil as saying your shot was in the black when shooting at the range. j/k

Faust framed the decision as a necessary step to combat “forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values.”

Hunh. Then one could wonder why every applicant to the university isn’t “included” on the roster of incoming students. Otherwise, shouldnt the university be accused of “exclusion” to those not “privileged” with the necessary pre-requisites for attending such an august institution? How people continue to hold Harvard in such high esteem is beyond me,

Using a blacklist to promote inclusion…I do not think that word means what you think it means.

“Faust framed the decision as a necessary step to combat “forms of privilege and exclusion at odds with our deepest values.””

Let us extend this. What is more exclusive and privileged than Harvard? By their very existence they are promoting exclusion. I seem to remember reading in a variety of places that once admitted to Harvard Law, even by dubious admissions standards promoting equality, that one will graduate. What a bunch of pompous, self-delusional assholes. Does anyone love them? Besides they love themselves.

“Inclusion”

They keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means.

Since these are off campus organizations, how does Harvard plan to get the membership lists? They have no right to them.

Certifiably insane. This is what happens when you are insulated from the real world.

I predict that by 2021, employers will start posting job reqs saying “students with liberal arts degrees need not apply”
