One of the videos linked by Drudge, of Newt supposedly bashing Reagan while talking about George H.W. Bush running in 1980, is misleadingly edited.
Dan Riehl has the details and the more complete video:
There’s a short excerpt of a 1988 C-SPAN video purportedly showing Newt Gingrich bashing Reagan when talking about how Bush, Sr. should run. As I suspected, it’s edited to give a false impression. What you don’t see is immediately after when Gingrich praises Reaganism and the Reagan platform. If you can’t watch it all, it begins at about 2:30 in to confirm it’s the same segment. It’s the minute or two afterward you also need to hear to understand that Newt wasn’t bashing Reagan at all.
He was merely saying, Bush isn’t Reagan and the GOP needs something new to sell. He even points out the Reagan landslide, saying Reagan’s platform won 48, or whatever states and was inclusive.

I’d like to see the full content of ALL the edited videos that were used to slam Newt today.
Rush Limbaugh said that this was obviously a coordinated attack.
Duh.
My question is: Who coordinated it?
Yep. He was essentially saying that G.H.W. could not simply rest on the laurels of the Reagan administration.
We had problems that needed to be effectively addressed, and Bush needed to present that “vision thing” for a Bush administration in the future.
An innocuous no-brainer, really.
you forget that the country is full of no brainers.
Well that’s just ridiculous. This is out of hand, on both sides.
Huh? Why both sides? You sound like the media when they refer to five black guys giving one white guy a beatdown in Philly or Chicago for no reason a “fight”.
I think both sides have made dishonest or misleading charges and/or ads.
On balance, there is no realistic comparison between the two campaigns’s tactics. Mitten’s are in the same category with those of Charlie Crist, Dan Rather and B. Hussein O.
Why they would use that clip like that is beyond me. They have to know its going to help newt
If Newt can withstand by staying on his game, in the long run it will help him. But if they succeed, they’ll take him down. I guess the only positive thing that can be said is that, assuming for a moment that Newt withstands all this and gets the nomination, these hot coals he’s walking over now will prepare him for the even bigger cauldron to be lit by the obastard campaign.
I heard Newt got a big infusion of cash into his Superpac, so he’s got them on the run.
Hang tough, Newt. Stand your ground and keep firing.
Romney and his minions are truly desperate now. These polls must really be rocking their “inevitable” world. Between Coulter, Drudge and the rest of the cabal, this is looking like an attempted gangbanging.
It actually makes me sad seeing supposed conservatives (and I don’t mean Romney – I always have thought he was a snake) resorting to these tactics. In fact, it’s sickening to see.
But this may be about to reach the point where non-Gingrich supporters with cooler heads such as Krauthammer and Rove start to distance themselves from these lying magpies because what they’re doing is so damaging to the party for the long haul.
I’ve never liked Romney, at least not since he dissed the Boy Scouts in favor of the sodomites promoted and protected by NBC during the Olympics Mittens managed.
Jack Russel Terrierist (ha! love your username) — I agree! To see people I assumed would be our natural allies, DISHONESTLY trashing Newt, breaks my heart.
And they do this for … Romney??? You have to be kidding me.
Do you remember the Paul Newman movie in which he’s a sort of alcoholic, failed attorney who takes a case about a young mother who is in a coma because of problems at the birthing at the hospital, and the hospital is stonewalling and saying the doctors did nothing wrong — “THE VERDICT,” it was called —
The doctors are uber-Establishment figures in the movie.
The doctors and the hospital have all the money in the world, ruthless attorneys, and they are out to destroy the Paul Newman character. They send Charlotte Rampling’s character to spy on him, seem to offer him friendship, and betray him.
In the end, he finds a nurse who was part of the team when the mother was injured. She has moved away and she’s working in a day care center.
He begs her to tell him what happened. She tells him that the hospital changed the number of hours since the young mother had eaten from a “1” to a “9” — because she had just eaten and the doctor had missed it, and she threw up and choked and her brain was without oxygen. so it was the doctor’s fault. But the doctor and hospital were ready to destroy everyone, in order to not have to take responsibility.
The nurse tells him that she had to run away because she knows that the number was a “1.” The doctors and the hospital have ruined her life. She’s afraid of them. She says, who are these people to do this — she cries out, “I wanted to be a nurse!”
That’s the way this feels to me when I see Coulter, NRO, Drudge working DISHONESTLY to try to damage Newt. The are the minions of Gozer. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Who do they think is the Gatekeeper, I wonder — is Romeny Vince Clothor, the Key Master??
I thought they were our allies for truth. I thought they valued freedom and constitutional government. I thought they valued their reputations. They are like the Charlotte Rampling character, trying to destroy from within.
It’s really hard to imagine that they are sincere.
Well, sorry, Ann, Matt, Rick, Catherine, Ramesh, Jim (Rush?). No sale.
I want to live in a free country!
I don’t appreciate feeling betrayed by these people. I don’t take them seriously at this time. I watch with interest as they destroy their reputation and brand with me.
But I am not vindictive. I pray that the American people see this the way I do. Then Newt wins, and we are on our way to fixing this.
And one of the things I love about Newt is, he’s a win-win kind of guy.
When Newt wins, everyone who is willing to help restore our nation will be able to team up.
There is repentance. There is redemption. There is cooperation.
America can be a shining city on a hill, as we are meant to be, with all our human flaws and failings. We can try to live up to our heritage.
AND so that other people around that world can see our freedom, fairness, safety and prosperity and say, as the woman did in “WHEN HARRY MET SALLY,” in the delicatessen scene, “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Newt, just be yourself in the debate tonight. Slow and steady wins the race. We are with you 100%. More join us every day. God bless you.
Ok, all right.
I may be vindictive. A little.
But I will get over it.
Eventually.
Dolly Parton said people made fun of her when she was a little girl, and she wrote about it in “Coat of Many Colors,” but when that song became a hit, the hurt just went away!
When Newt is the nominee, if he is, the hurt will go away! And when Newt wins, if he wins, we will get started on making everything better.
Not only do I remember “The Verdict”, but I just watched it for the fifth or sixth time about two weeks ago. It’s one of my favorite movies. I had DVR’d it a couple months ago and almost forgot about it. I think it is Newman’s very best performance, with “The Hustler” second. I think your analogy between the Rampling character and the shameless cheesiness coming from the Drudge/Coulter crowd is spot on. Speaking of hustlers, where is their dignity? Do they, along with the slimestream media, think we are fools? Do they not get that we see what they’re trying to do? But what’s this about Rush? I have not been able to tune in recently. Please don’t tell me he’s supporting Mitt. I remember him being in awe of Newt when Newt orchestrated the takeover of the House.
As for my nic, yep, Jacks are terrierists. They are the hoodlums of the dog world, God love the little squirts. The one I have is a 15 lb. rocket dog, made of muscular dynamite, shot from a cannon, equipped with 4WD and probably as smart as a 6 yr. old child when it comes to problem-solving skills. She loves to go hunting with my husband and just a couple weeks ago located a deer he shot that ran a long, long way up and then down hill into heavy cover. He tracked that doe in the rain as far as he could for over two hours and was about to give up when our little Jack found her far away down near a culvert in very heavy cover. Jacks embody the American spirit you spoke of. They are so independent and have the greatest courage, brains, persistence, excellence, dedication, loving loyalty and they have the heart of a lion. And….hilarious. Watching them in action is like watching a cartoon. Best breed God ever gave us. If you want a superb dog, get a Jack, but make sure it’s a working JRTCA Jack Russell, not an AKC Parson Russell.
Thanks for your reply.
Sorry to go off-topic, folks.
I watched it came away with the interpretation that Mr. Gingrich was saying that Bush could not claim to be a new Reagan but instead had to find his own voice and present his own ideas building on Reagan, not just copying him. There is no bashing of Reagan at all.
It pretty clear that Drudge has lost his mind.
Meanwhile, we have perfectly good, off-the-shelf clips of Romney disavowing Reaganism and calling himself a “progressive.” Sale, anybody? What, no interest?
What’s even more interesting is that they take an old and misleadingly edited video of Newt from the 1980s to use against him. Apparently no information out there is too old or discredited to use against Newt.
Yet Mitt’s recent past from Massachusetts is considered “old” and not valid because he’s supposedly converted to conservatism.
If they could find a video of Newt wetting the bed when he was 3 yrs. old, they’d use it against him.
That is it ? That statement about “going with the new” is bad mouthing Reagan ?
Asking “what have you done for me lately or are you going to do for me in the future ?” is bad mouthing {fill in the blank} ?
Oh. Please. The Jedi Mind Trick lives on.
Well, Rush played the clip of Newt saying that “he went to a Goldwater meeting in 1964” and then the “I was a Rockefeller campaign head” back-to-back, and in essence said Newt contradicted himself. Then, right before a break, he said, “Well…..they could both be true, I suppose” (paraphrasing – I haven’t seen the transcript yet). Newt NEVER SAID he worked for Goldwater, or contradicted himself. That is a fabrication, a twisting of the statements.
Please, people!! Stop this!!! Focus on OBAMA and his failed policies, the tanking economy, the things he is PROMISING TO DO TO US before the year ends!!
I never thought I’d see the day where Rush Limbaugh would trash a conservative like this; not that Newt is perfect – just that he has seemingly bought into these lies and is perpetrating them by not countering them or discussing their truth, their context, or their origin. Disgusting.
I think this is way beyond just NRO and Drudge. Stinks. Stinks on ice.
I agre, DINORightMarie, I’ve been listening to Rush since the beginning of his radio show. I have never heard him so incoherent.
Newt stands for everything Rush claims to believe in. And what is Rush dong????
Newt is ready to restore constitutional government at the behest and with the help of the American people.
Rush is apparently utterly ignorant of those facts! Can Rush not read the 21st Century Contract with America??
I’m sorry, if the Rush I know and love were commenting on this, Rush would say, THE FIX IS IN, HE’S IN THE TANK FOR ROMNEY.
BAIN owns Rush’s contract. Rush says BAIN is his”syndication partner.” Have they put pressure on Rush?Rush’s analysis is ignorant and slanted.
This stinks DINIRightMarie. On ice. To high heaven. I SO agree.
Somewhere I read yesterday that someone said Romney has bought up half of Washington, D.C.
The is a big showdown, maybe the big showdown.
I’m with the new American TEA Party.
The establishment has taken the Republican contest past the point of no return. There is no way I can cast a vote for Romney in the general election. Period. I’m quite certain I’m not the only one who feels this way.
Dead right.
Harrumph!
Certain people are into the Newt smears so deeply now that, if he gets the nomination, they’re done, starting with Coulter and Drudge.
I wil support any GOP candidate except Romney or Paul. Given either of those two, I write in a name.
However… WE MUST STILL VOTE THE DOWNTICKET CONSERVATIVES!
WE MUST STILL VOTE THE DOWNTICKET CONSERVATIVES!
Henry Hawkins, YES.
Nope to Santorum.
But YES, we most certainly will be voting for the downticket conservatives.
The Newt campaign is building for the coming years, way pat the election.
We’re going to restore government of law: OF, BY & FOR the PEOPLE, under the Constitution.
Absolutely agree. I will not abstain from down-ticket races. Talk about the irony of ironies, I would hold my nose and vote for Paul, but I will absolutely not vote for Romney.
I agree. Let Obama own it.
moi aussi, big time
moi aussi response is to McCoy2k
Thank you Mr. Jacobson, you are one of the few bloggers I trust. So many bloggers have never really been conservative or have sold their souls in order to be accepted into the D.C. clic.
If we judge Newt by his enemies, I’d say he was just the man we need to clear the rats out of the D.C. sewer. No worries though, it won’t increase the rat population in Virginia, since most of these rats are commuters and already live there!
By the way could you post the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version of Carry On? It’s got a great transition into a different version of Questions. It’s a winner.
Drudge is looking more and more like Dan Rather by the minute.
I’ll never for the 2004 September Dan Rather’s “Fake, but accurate” attempt to bring down W. A once proud journalistic career the turned into the biggest joke on the evening news.
I guess back in the day when Matt sat in his apartment banging away on his old 486 he envisioned himself as the Kingmaker he now feels he has become. Such a huge disappointment. These things we’re seeing coming from journalists and pundits of the right go beyond making me angry. Worse than angry, they make me very, very sad. I want to shout, “How could you do such a thing?” in the tone one uses with a small child who has irreperably ruined a priceless heirloom.
I will make this prophecy: There will be a backlash to these tactics.
A guy called Rush today saying he didn’t care about all this stuff they’re slamming Newt with. He likes Newt because the Establishment doesn’t like him. He said he doesn’t want politicians to go to DC and try to get along.
Yes, indeed. Pain and suffering will be exacted over the long haul.
Gingrich speaking: “The American people I think, are not nearly as stupid as Washington columnists’ interpretation …”
“The country has this gut instinct that there are real challenges in the 90’s and beyond. We’re a country in real transition. The number one problem with poverty is not just black, it is single head of household females with two or three kids. And that’s a problem that has to tear at everyone’s heart … now what’s our answer?”
education … childcare … developing vital ideas … number of people working on … “projecting a vision of Republicanism that builds on Reaganism but is beyond Reaganism.”
That was around the 8-9 minute mark. The context was they can’t just say they’re going to do the same thing as Reagan again. They have to offer some further vision.
I hope this backfires in Romney’s face and he loses big in Florida.
This is sickening. How Romney must love to destroy. People are real – they are targets. Just like Alinsky says in Rules for Radicals: “13. Pick the target; freeze it; personalize it; polarize it.”
I hope this blows up in his face and forces Mitt to leave the race in disgrace.
That should say:
People are not real to him – they are targets.
Hit Submit too soon. 🙁
I heard part of Rush today as well, then just a bit of Hannity. Hannity was saying it was getting too personal for him, and they both said they’d never seen anything like this before.
We knew this election was going to be one of the dirtiest in recent history, but I assumed it would be AFTER we had a nominee :/
These elitists are freaking out that they might lose their place at the trough; their true colors are showing now and it’s beyond disgusting.
This is how I see it: the collective scum trying to ruin Newt are working harder at doing that than they did at defeating BHO. Vile. Sickening. Disgusting. They are not, and never were, patriots. EVER.
Yes, Trying To Be Hopeful — they are pulling out all the stops because Romney is just Obama-Lite. And the Establishment knows it.
THIS is the big deal. THIS is where they have to stop us. THIS is the ring-pass-not moment.
Because if Newt wins this nomination, Newt will win the general election.
And the Establishment will lose.
Two sources:
Angelo Codevilla from July, 2010 “America’s Ruling Class”

If you want support in are trying to be hopeful, these speeches will reassure you that Newt is on the right track and we can restore our country if we team up together. I am always inspired by “2012:VICTORY OR DEATH.”
Hang in in there, Trying. This will get better is we stay courageous.
The establishment casts the Tea party as radicals, when in fact the Tea party movement has radicalized the establishment. That is what has happened. They correctly have seen the Tea party as the next political movement that has lasting strength; so the establishment has to everything in its power to smother the Tea party in its crib.
Couple comments:
1) Great job, Professor, for fighting the good fight. When I see this garbage, it just increases my resolve to support Newt. I already cast my ballot for him in Florida – not every absentee ballot is going to Mitt, that’s for sure 🙂
2) I hope, if Mitt wins (unfortunate but possible), that he fights against Barack Obama as hard as Newt.
But what makes me want to vomit is that these seem dirty intramural players will probably roll over like pussycats in the media spotlight of the main race, and lose their will to slug it out.
Ultimately, Erickson over at Redstate, whom I lost quite a bit of respect for in this cycle, said it best. We may well face long odds with either candidate, but given a choice between going down swing or going down like a wuss (I’m paraphrasing), the grassroots are picking let’s go out and fight.
And I can’t understand why the Coulters and others don’t want the legitimate fight. Its nauseating hypocrisy.
3) The more I read around Romney’s advisors, the Colemans, who really don’t care if Obamacare gets repealed, the more I read Pethoukis on Romney’s refi plan comments, the more that Romney looks like Obama-lite in the worst possible way.
Even if we win with Romney, we lose. We won’t shift the mind of any voters about conservatism, we won’t shift any actual policies, and we won’t fight and policy fights.
Personnel are policy, and it doesn’t matter what he says. His personnel are Obama-lite.
Give me good Newt 3 days a week, even with bad Newt 3 days a week, and a day of rest on Sunday. It beats capitulation. Newt will at least listen to the grassroots in office. Romney won’t give a s—.
Barf.
Time to go rally the neighbors this weekend.
I’m with JRT, though. If Newt can withstand this and offer strong, honest defense as well as his visions/ideas and solutions, we’ll have a darned good candidate who is able to withstand Obama’s opposition research arm (MSM) and billion dollar warchest.
correction to your post, Prof. Bush the interview was when Bush was running in 1988 not 1980.
I just finished reading Rush Limbaugh’s transcript, and HOLY TALLAHASSEE! This is not good for Newt when you consider how many millions of listeners Rush has…
Anyway, what I wanted to point out is that Rush had Cookie review the video in Prof. Jacobson’s post, and she is “insistent that nobody’s doctored this” video.
OK, now you may click on the red Dislike button
HERE =>
you seem like a concern troll. are you?
Hope, don’t misunderstand me. I’ve been a member of the Newt Fan club for many, many years. I’ve read most of his books — as soon as they were published. Love all of his historical fiction too.
I was a Newtie before Newtie was cool.
I give Prof. Jacobsen great credit for sticking his neck out on November 16, 2011, to endorse Newt. The Professor also said on that day, “While I will actively support Newt, I want readers to know that this blog will remain a place where supporters of various Republican candidates are welcome to make their voices heard in the comments.
The primary process is a vetting process. I am trying — if you will allow me — to remain objective! Lately, I have had to go elsewhere to get any anti-Newt perspective. That’s okay. It’s the Professor’s blog, and I applaud him if his blog traffic has improved as a result of his bias.
My stance has always been — and always will be — Anybody But Obama. It troubles me greatly when I hear other commenters say they will not, under any circumstances, vote for one candidate or the other.
Given your posts on Gingrich and Mr. J, I hope you don’t like me.
“It’s the Professor’s blog, and I applaud him if his blog traffic has improved as a result of his bias”
Bias? BIAS? How interesting that you characterize somebody’s choice you disgaree with as BIAS. That seems pretty Alinskyish right there. Oh, and just to be clear: Alinskyish=cheap shot.
No one doctored which video? If you mean the “edited version” I don’t anyone meant “edited” as in “doctored.” It was taken out of context and only the portion that made it seem as if Newt were bashing Reagan was left in. If you see the whole thing, you can tell that isn’t the case.
The truth is clouded when looking through the eyes of hate, greed, vengeance and jealousy. Gingrich seems to be holding up pretty well I”d say considering what they’re throwing at him. Hope he gets a “moment” tonight during the debate.
If you mean that the video has not been spliced or otherwise concatenated, then you are correct that the video has not been ‘doctored.’
However if you think that the video was not intentionally edited in order to match a false narrative then you are mistaken.
If Bain capital owes Rush’s program, Rush is toast either way he goes. He’s between a rock and a hard place. If he endorses or even covers for Newt, he will lose his listenership and thus his income come contract time. If he stands with Newt, which I believe is where his hearet is, he possibly won’t get a renewed contract, or at least not as generous one. Of course, he could go elsewhere when his contract expires and tell Mittens and bain to stick it.
If he’s smart, he’ll either stick to deconstructing obama while not endorsing, or he’ll back Newt and tell Mitt and Bain to bugger off come contract time.
