Scalise would have been the better choice as majority leader at the time. The outgoing leader sucked.
I didn’t like how Speaker Johnson ran the House when it came to bringing down overall spending; he didn’t. That said I don’t know who would have been able to have more success in herding cats with such a narrow majority. He was in a very difficult situation, nearly impossible in truth and probably did as well as could be expected in such a thankless position. Especially with Senate refusing to bring to the floor, much less pass all sorts of legislation and with Trump probably in his ear night and day demanding the impossible or least the very improbable from him with such a razor thin majority.
Nobody, the only way to reign in spending will be unpopular positions Trump didn’t want to take like saving social security for the next generation by raising the age, or reducing benefits or if you want a position every Republican would reject raising taxes.
Even if you manage to force a Republican bill doing only right wing methods to reduce spending through the lower house the senate filibuster kills it and Democrats have the speaker with his fingerprints all over highly unpopular policies.
Which is why any real deficit reduction will have to concede at least some tax increase the Democrats want.
Or alternatively killing the filibuster so next time we have a Biden situation they stack the court and impose a 51 majority tyranny.

The budget deficit and National Debt is about way way more than just your myopic focus on SSA. Set SSA aside for now and just focus on the approximately $2 Trillion in annual deficit spending in the current GoP/Trump budgets that a certain Congressman from KY kept trying to explain were a bad idea.
Yes the filibuster is an impediment. Since the d/prog are gone blow it up anyway we should have done it earlier, passed the.SAVE Act and filled every Judicial vacancy and every Executive Branch vacancy at minimum. Heck there’s still time to do so.
The real hurdle to cutting $2 trillion in annual spending to get to a balanced budget is …voters. Its you, me and everyone else all of whom have a pet program that we want preserved. Every dime of that $2 trillion annual deficit (and growing) goes to some constituency that will raise Cain and crawl through broken glass to defeat any candidate who wants to cut off ‘their’ program. Your immediate reference to SSA displays this phenomenon.
Lets raise Federal revenue by ending the SALT credit. Heck lets have a zero deduction/zero credit Federal tax system with a flat 18% on income and capital gains with the value of a 2000 hour year x Federal minimum wage exempt from taxation for full time
workers, prorated to the number of hours worked for those who work less than 2000 hours.
Every time Republicans have even pretended to attempt to cut spending, Democrats start screaming about Medicare and Social Security and get rewarded at the ballot box. And then promptly start increasing spending far beyond any proposed cuts.
The simple fact is the electorate is too stupid to accept cutting spending without a catastrophic event. That’s a horrible place to be, but its simple fact.
I’m coming around to your viewpoint re the necessity of a catastrophic event to jar folks into action. I’m not sure they will then choose the prudent course as they discover themselves to be deep in the hole; stop digging. I suspect many/most will greedily seek to preserve ‘their’ program and everyone else be damned but it could work. Heck what we’re doing and have been doing didn’t work so lets try the accelerationist approach to reach the cataclysm faster so the sooner we arrive the sooner we can try to make reforms out of the rubble.
Investigations may be Jordan’s specialty, but he won’t be in a position to conduct any. He’ll be spending full time fighting the other side’s show-trial “investigations” into nothing. How does his experience apply to that?
Mike Johnson, not to different from Paul Ryan accounted for very little accomplishment. His claim to fame will forever be he wasn’t as completely useless as John Thune.
Republicans are like herding cats
And many are gutless
The
The gut of the cat is being used on the fiddles that saw while Rome burns.
Paul Ryan was a traitor and lied and manipulated Trump
Paul Ryan is an asshole and a threat to this nation
Mike Johnson is none of that
The loser should resign.
This is unfortunate. It was Mike Johnson who successfully managed every legislative achievement of the congressional term.
The margin of error he had was zero and he succeeded.
I hope when we regain the house majority whoever is the house minority leader proves competent but the only way to know if he is will be when it happens.
I think you lost track of that sentence halfway through. When I do that it’s because I wrote a sentence one way, then decided to recast it, and did a sloppy job of the edit.
It finally dawned on me that he meant that if the minority leader chosen now proves to be competent, he will be a better candidate (than we’ve been able to field recently) for majority leader “when” we take the House back,
He did his job. He got a ton of stuff passed in the House with a razor thin majority, only to watch Thune sit on it before going on vacation.
I’d be pissed, too.
Well, Scalise prob the better choice as The Apparatus already shot him up once. Just a bad look tryin to kill him again.
Why all the hatin on Speaker Johnson? Did he do what he could; play the cards he had? Well or well enough?
The Feckless R’s need to figure out it’s not a one great man election, one time n done. Everybody doin their part, ongoing. Just like the progressive prigram for the last 100+ years.
Of course, that would require them to want to govern.
Independents who put Trump in office to give Republicans a chance were vastly disappointed so turned back to Dems to give them a chance. Has anyone pointed out any policy proposal Dems advanced this cycle to lower costs over the mythical “affordability crisis” they with their media sycophants kept hammering America with? No. Not a one.
Sure they did. They promised a bunch of people free s*t, making stuff affordable for them, and way less affordable for everybody who actually works for a living.
He has done enough damage.
He lost the house. Why would he be rewarded?
Let’s go Brandon, Gill that is. A fresh new face who is smart, articulate, not afraid of a fight. Some new blood in charge instead of the decades long failed retreads.
