American Association of University Professors Backed Only Democrats in Midterms
“endorsements also draw attention to the organization’s tax-exempt status”
This is called institutional capture. The AAUP has been taken over.

AAUP backs only Democrats in historic midterm endorsements
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) broke with 110 years of precedent by endorsing 12 Democratic congressional candidates in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, backing no Republicans.
The Washington, D.C.-based organization announced its endorsements Oct. 13, marking an unprecedented expansion into partisan electoral politics and raising questions about the political activities of tax-exempt faculty organizations.
Of the three endorsed Senate candidates, two won their races. Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan, and former Sen. Sherrod Brown unseated Republican Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio. Republican Sen. Ashley Moody defeated AAUP-backed Angie Nixon in Florida.
The association also backed nine House candidates. Donavan McKinney won in Michigan’s 13th District, while Will Lawrence declared victory over Republican incumbent Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th District, where the race remained uncalled early Wednesday.
In New Jersey, Rebecca Bennett defeated Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr. in the 7th District. Adam Hamawy and Analilia Mejia also won their respective congressional races.
New York candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Cait Conley secured victories, while Chris Rabb won Pennsylvania’s 3rd District.
Some of the AAUP-endorsed candidates have documented connections to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), including Angie Nixon, and House candidates Donavan McKinney, Claire Valdez, and Chris Rabb.
The DSA identified McKinney, Valdez, and Rabb among its endorsed congressional candidates, while Nixon has acknowledged joining the organization.
The results gave AAUP-backed candidates victories in 10 races, one defeat, and one race awaiting confirmation as of early Wednesday.
The association first endorsed El-Sayed in July, ending its longstanding practice of avoiding national candidate endorsements.
AAUP President Todd Wolfson defended the organization’s political involvement, citing academic freedom, collective bargaining, and affordable higher education as priorities.
The exclusively Democratic endorsements also draw attention to the organization’s tax-exempt status and the restrictions governing political campaigning.
